Awareness will make the difference By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

The International Day to End Trafficking in Persons July 30 was a fitting day for more than 150 people to come out and support the culmination of Project OnRoute, designed to raise awareness of the issue of human sex trafficking along the Highway 401 corridor. At the Tilbury OnRoute South location, politicians,

police services, community and women’s groups and the public gathered in support of the Courage for Freedom organization campaign to raise awareness of the fact the 401 corridor is used to transport young women and men to different locations where they are forced to provide sexual services to johns for money. In Canada, 80 per cent of victims are Canadian citizens, organizers reported to the crowd.

About 150 people, including politicians, police agencies, women’s and community groups, including these young ladies, showed up to the Tilbury South OnRoute to support the video awareness campaign on human trafficking and sexual exploitation called Project OnRoute. That campaign ended July 30 and a new campaign, Project Maple Leaf, will begin in February 2020 on National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

The Tilbury OnRoute location was one of 11 across Ontario to air a public service announcement for the final time on Tuesday as part of the #ProjectOnRoute campaign that had the potential to reach more than 16.5-million views across the province. That campaign is being replaced by a similar initiative called

safety for victims and survivors in a non-objectified, non-discriminating manner,” Roy said. Essex OPP detachment commander, Insp. Glenn Miller, was on hand and spoke passionately about what he said is one of the “most heinous crimes that we have – it’s modern day slavery.”

Miller said they are indicators the public can look for at home, at school and in the community to identify a young person who may need help. Awareness is the key, according to organizers, who said with public help, police can work so traffickers won’t be able to hide in plain sight, and, eventually, will have to close their operations. Beach ramp closed in Mitchell’s Bay By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

In the interest of public safety, municipal officials have closed a ramp into the water at the main park in Mitchell’s Bay. Jeff Bray, manager of parks and open spaces for the municipality, said the southern of the two ramps in Dover Beach Park is closed due to warm, high water. He said the conditions have led to a great deal of algae growth, which has created a slippery situation on the ramp. “There was a recent fall there. Because of the heat and high water, algae on the ramps is causing it to be more slippery,” he

said. “It’s for public safety.” Beachgoer Robbi-Lynn Clark reported on social media that her family went to Mitchell’s Bay to celebrate her daughter’s fourth birthday recently. As her mother went to help her child as she walked down the ramp, the mother slipped, hit her head, and suffered a concussion. “Today was a beautiful day for the beach; I would hate for this to happen to anyone else,” Clark wrote on social media July 30. “It was my daughter’s fourth birthday today and we haven’t been to Mitchell’s Bay in forever so we decided it would be a fantastic birthday gift to go to

the beach, because going there as a kid was a blast. My daughter and mother decided to go down the ramp, because it was the safest, or we thought. My mother went down and slipped and cracked her head. She now is in Wallaceburg hospital. She was unconscious and has a big concussion. We ask that everyone please be cautious and be careful.” She added two days later that her mother is on the road to recovery. Meanwhile, Bray said municipal staff are examining options. “We are looking at ways of making it safer. We tried the Mobi-Mat, which is designed for people with mobility challenges to go

Fight Like Mason donates to CKHA The Chatham Voice

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance’s (CKHA) youngest patients receiving care in the Pediatric unit will now have their choice of five customized “Mason Power Poles” thanks to a donation from the Fight Like Mason Foundation. Displaying fun, vibrant and colourful designs, these special IV poles give children receiving care in hospital and at home a sense of comfort during their journeys in the medical world. Formed by Iain Macri and Chantelle Bacon, the Fight Like Mason Foundation carries on the legacy of their son, Mason Bacon-Macri, who was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma on May 4, 2015 at the age of two. Fight Like Mason’s mission is to improve treatment, care, quality of life

and awareness of patients diagnosed with childhood Rhabdomyosarcoma and other childhood cancers. Along with raising funds for childhood cancer research, Fight Like Mason strives to give children who are receiving treatment in hospitals and at home medical equipment that shows how brave and courageous they are. Sara Gee, Registered Nurse in the Pediatric unit at CKHA, reached out to Fight Like Mason after hearing about their inspiring work at surrounding regional hospitals and knew these special IV poles would be a welcome addition to CKHA’s Pediatric unit. “Fight Like Mason is so happy to be able donate to and provide the pediatric services at CKHA with the world’s only custom IV poles! Our Mason Power Poles are designed

with the spirit of our superhero Mason, to brighten up the hospital room and allow children with illness to be proud of their battles,” said Bacon, President, Fight Like Mason Foundation, in a media release. The Mason Power Poles were inspired by Mason’s experience when he left the hospital for the final time and returned home with his family to receive palliative care. When several pieces of medical equipment were brought into the home and set up, Mason’s warm and safe haven had become a hospital-like environment. His functional hospital bed and IV pole, among other pieces of equipment, were a reminder of the countless hospital stays and treatments he had endured. After this, Bacon and Macri came up with the idea to create fun and colourful IV poles to

Wholly choosing Chatham-Kent has brought about a lot of personal change and growth in my life over the last number of years. Choosing to work with the McKinlay family is the next step in ensuring the dedication and passion I bring to serving families can flourish right here at home. The importance of local ownership, perspective and presence can’t be understated. As a Funeral Director, I can’t help but contemplate my own end more than most - what a gift of perspective! To that end, time spent in Chatham-Kent has shifted my thinking. This is where I want to be, and where I want to serve. My choosing to work with the McKinlay family may come as a surprise to some. However, I am excited to set aside the proverbial “sword” of competition and commit to better serving families together here at home. Thank you to the Denning family for your friendship and all the experiences we shared. I’m excited not only to serve neighbours and friends, but to work amongst them too. I’ve sat in the back pew of sanctuaries, huddled over AV equipment, clenched a coffee cup at a kitchen table, and stood stoically in dew-bent cemetery lawns on countless occasions - listening to legacies. We are curators of those legacies. We bear the responsibility of ensuring that love, memories, and grief are properly acknowledged and revered - as opposed to misplaced. Meeting needs, ever changing, is a must. Crafting stories is what I love most in my work; the authorship and inspiration for turning the page in mine I owe to you. Thank you C-K Jacob Rowe

We are very pleased to have Jacob Rowe join our team at McKinlay’s. Over the past few years, we have watched Jacob grow into his role as a Chatham-Kent Funeral Director. He has grown roots here. He has built relationships here. He has worked tirelessly and passionately serving the community of Chatham-Kent. He is an advocate for unique, personalized service, going so far as to become a certified Funeral Celebrant. Not only has he personalized services for families right here at home, but he has been asked to speak at conferences to encourage our fellow professionals to follow suit. Like any profession, the funeral service profession is always changing. The best changes start right here in a small town – which is why the best funeral directors work within them. We believe that Jacob’s dedication to his families, his community, his profession and his values make him a natural – if not inevitable - fit with our team. Nathan McKinlay

Be aware When a message is important, it bears repeating. Often. Ending human trafficking is one of those messages. Thanks to Courage for Freedom, founded by Kelly Franklin, the message is getting out to an area frequented by human traffickers with their victims – the Highway 401 corridor. Project OnRoute involved a video about and by survivors, and was shown at OnRoute locations in Ontario along the 400 series highways for the month of July. The video tells people what to look for so that traffickers can no longer hide with their victims in plain sight while getting gas, food or switching cars to move on to the next location where they will force our young women and men to perform sex acts for money. Shining a light on traffickers – their methods, their movements, preferred locations – it all helps to stop it from happening in our community, to our young people. Statistics compiled by Courage for Freedom indicated that 60 per cent of all human trafficking in Canada is initiated along the 400 series highway, and the 401 from Windsor to Montreal. Traffickers can move their victims easily from city to city, soliciting clients through online advertising. Human slavery is the fastest growing organized crime in the world. It is a billion-dollar industry that is often hidden in plain sight, and no community is immune to its existence. These are our daughters, sisters, nieces, and neighbours, and we need to know what it is we are fighting when we fight to keep them safe. Project OnRoute encourages people to know the signs of trafficking and report any suspicious persons or activities to the police, Crime Stoppers or the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline. Read up on the subject, make yourself aware, get angry at the degrading and dehumanizing acts of traffickers and most of all, act on your gut instinct that something is wrong. Even if your tip doesn’t pan out this time, maybe the next one will save a girl trapped in a horrific situation. Remind men who buy the services of these young women that the women may not be there willingly and may be younger than 18. We can be the eyes and ears to help law enforcement end the sexual exploitation of our girls and boys, and we can’t give up until traffickers are in jail where they belong.

Opinion

Looks good on the outside Sir: I must thank Brian Sharp for his letter, “Happy with use of our tax dollars,” in a recent Chatham Voice. Differing views must be considered. Pointing out that city services look good I will agree, though most are private contractors. I also agree the municipality has its geographic complexities, though that is nothing new. And I understand council is a democratic body, which is why they are like all the rest. I’ll explain. My argument has always been balance, neither conservative nor liberal. Most can relate especially if we’ve been in a financial pinch or look at our own budgets. We all must live within our budgets, balancing mortgage or rent, utilities, car, insurance, kids, etc. Losing your job really sucks. And most of us have run into times where we bit off more than we could chew and we’re still paying. This

is because household debt is at an all time high across all classes of income, excluding the poor who cannot borrow. As we sped through life with little money management skills, we bought stuff seeking the proverbial dream. Now most find themselves with very little left over, and everything on a payment plan. Thank you, banks and credit cards! Most councillors are like the general public, with little to no fiscal restraint, let alone economic experience which would aid to understand future implications. When they review city budgets, the end result is raising taxes, and they never lower expenses. Unless you consider removing a street sweeper good for the citizens. This is not an accusation, it’s in print. As stated before, the public sector compensation is the largest expense, which leaves only

30 per cent for everything else. Simple math. Would you donate to a charity where 70% is for administration? Don’t expect any provincial or federal transfer dollars to save us; the previous decades of do-gooders racked up that credit card. Even Wynne cut health care spending before she left. Government budgets must act fiscally responsible or it gets painful over time. Demanding more taxes from the people for governments’ benefit has not historically ended well. If you give one child more ice cream than the other, you will be met with discontent. When the public sector was at par with the private sector there was balance. This is the change over the past three decades that matters. It is degrading confidence in government. Look at how many kids

want government jobs since they pay the most. It’s not about public service any more, it’s about the cash. Show me a private-sector job in Chatham-Kent that pays $40 an hour with less than a three-year degree. I’m tired of decades of excuses about how other small municipalities have the same problems. Then stop doing what they’re doing! Misery loves company. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. And stop tricking the people into thinking the budgets are for snow and bridges when 70% of the budget goes to an increasing pay scale for employees that do not build bridges, collect garbage, or resurface roads. It is out of balance. Robert Hakker Chatham-Kent

Kim Cooper: Outstanding in his field By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

Despite growing up as a city lad, Kim Cooper fell in love with the agriculture industry. And after 45 years in the sector, he recently retired. For the past 11-plus years, Cooper worked for the municipality as an economic development officer with a focus on agriculture. And for the past two decades, he’s penned a weekly newspaper column with a focus on local agriculture. Cooper’s path to agriculture did not simply take place on the back of a tractor. He grew up in Chatham and had planned to attend Western University to become a social worker. His grandparents owned a farm, and he did visit regularly as a child. “My mother grew up on a farm in Jeannette’s Creek. We’d go to the farm. I remember pick-

ing cucumbers and tomatoes as a kid,” he said. “I learned to swim and skate in and on Jeannette’s Creek.” Despite all that, Cooper said he never thought about a career in the agricultural sector. “Ag was never on my radar,” he said. But Cooper wound up laid off from a job in Windsor, and Stu Irving of M.J. Smith Grain contacted him to come and work there. His career in agriculture began with stocking shelves and selling seed, Cooper said. “I got interested. I went to Ridgetown College, enrolled in the agriculture production and management course,” he said. “I was laughed at a lot. I was a city kid trying to learn about farming.” But he knew he was right where he needed to be. “To me, it was all new. I just soaked it all up. It was the best two years of education I ever had. There

was so much hands-on training,” he said. From there, Cooper attended Guelph University, worked at King Grain, Thompson’s, the Ontario Soybean Growers’ Association and South West Ag Partners. During that time, Cooper said he travelled to more than 30 countries. “I’ve been blown away by being able to do what

I’ve done. Not many people are able to have the jobs I’ve had or had the opportunity to travel,” he said. Most of the travelling was related to the soybean industry and Cooper said most of his trips were to Southeast Asia. Working in agriculture wasn’t enough for Cooper, who, as a member of the agricultural com-

mittee with the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce, developed the idea of writing a monthly newspaper column to let the public know what was happening in the fields around them. “It was to help make people more aware of what we have here in Chatham-Kent. It was very rewarding. I learned so much from writing these

articles,” he said. Cooper said he’s retiring from writing the column, but added that four others will take turns penning it in the future. Starting next week, Cooper won’t head to the office or type up his column. “It’s a weird feeling. I’m excited and know I made the right decision, however,” he said.

A day in life of first responders By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

Teens in Chatham-Kent got to experience first hand a day in the life of first responders at Camp Sirens thanks to teamwork from police, fire and ambulance personnel. For students 12 to 13 years of age, Camp Sirens is a week-long camp that introduces campers interested in a career in emergency services to the training and activities of workers in the trade. According to Const. Renee Cowell with the Chatham-Kent Police Service, the event started out as Cop Camp around 2013 to introduce young people to the inner workings of the police service, get them comfortable with police and their role in the community, and get them

thinking about a career as a first responder. Working closely in Chatham-Kent with ambulance and fire personnel, Cowell said it made sense to invite those first responders to the event, changing the name to Camp Sirens. “It’s important to let the campers know that first responders work together, going to the same calls and working together to ensure the safety and protection of our community,” Cowell said. “We like to capture their interest at this age, before they get to high school. They get a sneak peak at what our professionals do on a daily basis and get them thinking about their future careers.” The week-long event included learning search and rescue techniques,

Camp Siren last year. She helps with the EMS First Aid/CPR demo and tour of the Wallaceburg dispatch centre. Each camper left with a fully stocked first aid bag. “The kids have responded really well to the camp. They were saying they didn’t want to leave,”

Larsen noted. “There is so much stuff they are doing this week. How many opportunities do you have to see this? Hopefully, these kids will be interested in this as a career for their future.” Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Service firefighter Whitney Burke,

who is a part of Camp Sirens, said when she was approached by Cowell about joining in the camp, she jumped at the chance to be involved and introduce kids to a possible career as a firefighter, either full-time or as a part-time volunteer. Continued on page 17

The campers were also told the difference between full-time firefighters at stations staffed 24/7 and stations that have volunteer firefighters on call for fire emergencies in their station area. She also talked to campers about all the roles firefighters have besides fighting fires such as public education, community safety and fire prevention, as well

Backyard Mission returns The Chatham Voice

For the last 11 years, First Presbyterian Church and First Christian Reformed Church have undertaken a joint mission project in Chatham, cleaning up around the yards of selected homes. Over two days, a group of

volunteers transforms the outside of a house and property for a deserving family or individual in Chatham. In the past the volunteers have scraped and painted houses, built wheelchair ramps and fences, done general carpentry repairs, replaced eaves troughs, land-

scaped, and done general cleanup around a house. This is done free of charge to the deserving homeowner as an outreach of love and compassion in the name of Jesus Christ. This year’s project will take place on Aug. 9 and 10 at 148 and 166 Forest St.

The municipality’s compliance audit committee met recently and rejected an election complaint against Mayor Darrin Canniff made by Powers.

Chatham-Kent officials say this is the 11th election complaint made by Powers. All were rejected. The time period for audit applications has expired.

Burke said an important aspect of the camp is that the kids learn what each service does in the community, and how their roles often overlap as they attend

emergency calls together. Prevention, protection and safety is the role of all first responders, she noted. “We are all preaching the same message and that is to work as a team to make Chatham-Kent the safest community it can be. With the kids, we see that as well, and by the end of the week, they are all working together.”
