Awareness campaign for paramedics By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

Chatham-Kent paramedics see a lot of things in their jobs, including people getting violent with them. And that’s unacceptable, according to Donald MacLellan, general manager of Chatham-Kent EMS MacLellan said the service has developed a new awareness campaign to spread the word. The Chatham-Kent EMS Zero Tolerance campaign includes Zero Tolerance posters inside its ambulances, additional support for paramedics who have faced violence and abuse

during a call, and increased collaboration with law enforcement when necessary. According to a Paramedic Chiefs of Canada study, 75 per cent of Canadian paramedics reported experiencing violence, with 74 per cent reporting multiple forms of violence that could include verbal and physical assault, as well as sexual assault and harassment. MacLellan said it happens locally. “We’ve had a couple of incidents that stemmed from notso-pleasant interaction,” he said. “They resulted in either verbal or physical violence towards paramedics.”

MacLellan said something had to be done to remind people such actions aren’t okay. “It was good for us to take a step back and find ways to support our staff,” he said. “This is a mitigating strategy. We didn’t reinvent the wheel here. We’re just replicating some work done by other organizations.” The Zero Tolerance campaign by Chatham-Kent EMS follows a similar one launched in Peterborough County and a Paramedic Chiefs of Canada position statement that supported a zero tolerance position on physical and verbal attacks on paramedics and support staff. MacLellan said violence against EMS personnel can happen anywhere and at any time. It’s not isolated to any particular incident or type of call. He also credits paramedics for being on the lookout for it and for being able to diffuse most situations. “Our paramedics are situationally aware and try to predict it and prevent situations from unfolding in that (violent) fashion,” he said. “Our staff do a great job in being therapeutic not only in providing care, but in communicating. We help to de-escalate or help patients focus on other issues.” MacLellan is realistic.

Chatham-Kent EMS is running a Zero Tolerance campaign, which will include posters in ambulances, detailing how violence towards paramedics won’t be tolerated.

He said the campaign won’t prevent all incidents of violence against EMS personnel. “It’s an awareness piece. We just don’t tolerate that behaviour,” he said. Nick Leclerc, Chief Steward with SEIU Healthcare, the union representing Chatham-Kent EMS paramedics, agreed that violence against paramedics should never be tolerated,

SAVE THE SERVICES THAT SAVE US

The Doug Ford government is planning to: Cut Public Health funding & close 25 out of 35 local Public Health Units, reducing them to 10. Close 49 out of 59 local ambulance services, reducing them to 10 & close 12 of 22 local dispatch centres Make real-dollar cuts to public hospital funding, even though we have the fewest hospital beds left per person of any province in Canada and a crisis of hospital over crowding. More cuts mean more services & staff cuts, less services, longer waits, more privatization & higher death rates. Make real dollar cuts to long-term care homes, forcing municipalities to either raise taxes or cut services for elderly & chronic care residents.

especially considering the potential for both physical and psychological injuries, such as stress, anxiety and PTSD. “Paramedics are many things, from problem solvers to care givers to pre-hospital emergency care experts,” said Leclerc. “They give their all caring for the people they encounter. They should never have to deal with violence towards them while helping those in need.”

And for Wicks, it was sorting through where exactly to shoot, as there are so many picturesque locations in Alberta. “I probably had about 30ish-plus locations I wanted to shoot with my time in the Rockies, and I can honestly say I visited them all plus more! Some of my favourites, though, would be Moraine Lake, Peyto Lake, and Emerald Lake, just incredible spots,” he said. “But a big goal of mine heading into this road trip was to climb to the summit of a mountain, and luckily I was able to in Canmore at what they call Ha Ling Peak. The hike up was tough to say the least, but reaching the top of the mountain peak, I was able to bring home an experience and photos I’ll always remember!” Wicks added another dream of his was to shoot from a helicopter. He said Travel Alberta made that possible, and it took place over the Rockies. “I was so stoked to cross

this off the bucket list! That adventure I’ll remember forever; some of the most surreal views I’ve ever seen, and they provided me with some pretty wicked images,” he said. Wicks is a lover of landscapes. He has shot at many places in Chatham-Kent, and across Ontario, but admits the views out in the Rockies offer an entirely different take. “I have to say what I love most about the landscapes out west would be just the magical blend of Mother Nature. From endless towering mountain peaks, seas of trees, raging waterfalls, abundance of wildlife, and of course the mind-blowing glacier-blue waters, there’s really endless beauty to be found every which way you look,” he said. “You truly feel the energy out there.” Wicks has shared a number of his images from his trip on social media, and said response from friends and followers has

Volunteers needed for vigil By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

GoPro hooked Kyle Wicks up with Travel Alberta during a recent visit to the province, and they in turn got the local shutterbug up in a helicopter for some incredible photos over the Rocky Mountains. Here, Wicks employs his GoPro Fusion 360-degree camera for a rather unique selfie.

Wicks says he’s living, shooting, in the present

Continued from page 3

As for the future for this photographer, Wicks said he’s sifting through his image collection to create a calendar for 2020, and is updating his website to showcase his new images. Even though he has these items on his immediate todo list, and is just returned from out west, Wicks said he’s nursing some teeth marks that won’t heal. “The travel bug has bit

me hard. My eyes are set on Europe or Asia to capture next,” he said. “For the meantime, I’ll be enjoying shooting the fall season in Ontario.” He’ll also be simplifying his life, he said, and saving up for the next big trip, the next adventure. “I’m learning to take each moment for what it is, not comparing it to yesterday or tomorrow or to what anyone else is doing

The call is out for volunteers to stand vigil around the Chatham cenotaph. For the third straight year, the Christ Church community is organizing the vigil in advance of the Nov. 11 ceremony at the site on King Street. It began in 2017 as a commemoration to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Christ Church is calling on service groups, churches, businesses and individuals to stand vigil from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily from Nov. 7 through to 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. Judy Stefanczyk, a warden of Christ Church, said the plan was initially to hold the vigil in 2017. “We had to keep it going, just from the community support we had, and the commitment. Before we started posting anything, we had calls from people inquiring about it,” she said. Individuals or teams of people can sign up for two-hour shifts.

Stefanczyk said it’s easier if people sign up in numbers, but individuals can certainly be slotted in. “The thing about having a team, is if it’s a cold shift, if there are six or eight, you can swap off every 15 minutes or so,” she said. Standing still on a blustery November day or evening, with the cold creeping up your legs from the chilled cement on which you are standing, can take its toll. Christ Church at 80 Wellington St. will be open during the vigil to serve as a warming location, with hot drinks and food available to those standing vigil. Revera Retirement Living’s Village on the Ridge Retirement Residence and Blenheim Community Village are again supporting this event, providing food and drinks. This year, there will be no overnight shifts, something that took place in the past. Stefanczyk said the change is to ensure the safety of participants. “It’s for security issues,” Stefanczyk said.

Spread it around Props to local builder Dave Depencier and realtor Krista Mall for taking the big step of leading a planned large-scale subdivision build in Dresden (see “Bold build plans for Dresden,” on page 9 in this week’s Chatham Voice). Chatham-Kent has a serious shortage of homes for sale. Our housing prices continue to soar as out-oftown interest grows. That interest is chewing up local inventory to the point that if a homeowner in C-K wishes to sell, he or she is very hesitant to list their home until they find another house to buy. And when homes sell here, there are quite often multiple bids on the house, with houses regularly going for more than the asking price in such bidding wars. Realtors are happy in that homes in the right price range, from $180,000 to about $350,000 (this week at least), will move quickly, sometimes in a matter of a couple of days, or even a few hours. But they’d love to have more selection for prospective buyers. Enter Depencier and Mall. They plan on building 20 new houses in Leisure Lane District in Dresden. It’s a bold move, and one that should be applauded. Much of the home building, at least the larger-scale builds, are taking place in Chatham. But Depencier and Mall, Dresden residents and natives, love their community and want to see others move there as well. Their homes are a mix of semi-detached, small fully detached and larger scale homes, meaning they are offering something for most everybody. It could be enticing for a retiring couple looking to move to Chatham-Kent from a larger urban area and just enjoy the slower pace and beauty that small-town Ontario has to offer. Or it could be a young family seeking their first home, or an established family looking to spread out a bit and trade up to a larger, newer home. Dresden is a great community on the Sydenham River. It has that small-town charm, but also has all the amenities. Plus there are some very interesting specialty shops. It’s great to see the build go outside of Chatham. Maple City Homes has led the charge in Chatham proper, but C-K has a great deal to offer as a whole. Let’s hope other builders think big in other smaller communities.

Opinion

Of cow farts and climate change Sir: If I dare to write a response to the recent letter on the climate and the Carbon Tax I may well raise the temperature of some readers. It amazes me so many can take such a myopic view. Have we lost the ability to even consider what it takes to change anything? Have we forgotten how this nation and every other nation progressed? I’ve never taken a side on the causes of climate change, which is really what everyone is arguing, since no scientific data, organizations, or groups can agree. Except politicians and the media. Surely no one honestly believes that a trend will only go in one direction?

Do people actually believe that the stock market or Bitcoin will always go up? Or deny that oil rich desserts were once lush with vegetation that formed the oil in the first place? If we haven’t been taught that change has been around since the beginning of time, then it’s sad that I have to throw fuel to the fire. Ok, so you want extra taxes to fix whatever you want fixed, fine, then the government needs more money. The only source for their growing deficits and debt is the public sector. It doesn’t fall out of the sky or printed at the mint, the source of

a nation’s wealth is its peoples’ collective ability to produce. But the government is taking more while not giving us anything in return. It is the people that produce the taxes, the public sector, that has seen declining wages and more taxes for decades in real dollars. Taxation and poor governance has caused our nation’s production, GDP (look it up), to decline since 2015. Unless these politicians start giving something back to their citizens, this will not end well. It’s a pity that our elected zombies are so narrowly focused on issues

that fail to cover what governance of this once new frontier was founded, the interests and prosperity of its citizens. Our founders ran away from high taxation. Did you forget? Without reason to better our lives, the incentive to produce declines. We Canadians have become stagnant. If you want to do something about pollution, or climate change, or farting cows, then there has to be incentive for a nation’s citizens to do so. Each must prosper, not just those with the power, the banks, and the military. Robert Hakker Chatham

Bruce’s rant on local drivers is bang on Sir: I enjoyed Bruce’s rant about other motorists (“It’s simple, folks, obey the law”) in the Oct. 24 Chatham Voice. I may be careless sometimes (sorry, Bruce!) but I am over 80 years old

and have passed the Ontario government’s 45-minute Group Education Session, so I can’t be too bad. Actually I can add a few items to Bruce’s list.

I think four-way stops are a valuable asset – as long as the first driver to reach the intersection takes precedence. I, too, hate to see stuff

thrown out of car windows, especially newspapers, pop bottles or fast food containers. It’s even more distressing if they blow into my driveway! Strephen J. Beecroft Chatham

Book Bash a free and interactive success

By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

Mary Beth Corcoran/The Chatham Voice

CKPL Chief Librarian Tania Sharpe, left and Marketing Manager Sarah Hart Coatsworth take a minute out of a very full day to smile at the Book Bash Children’s Literature Festival at the John D. Bradley Centre in Chatham on Oct. 23. Hundreds of school children and the public attended the free event.

More than 800 students from across Chatham-Kent were able to meet local authors, learn some coding, check out engineering clubs and robots, browse through tons of books, listen to stories and watch Indigenous dancers, all for free Oct. 23. Book Bash, an event organized by the Chatham-Kent Public Library and its community partners, entertained students during the day at the John D. Bradley Centre in Chatham, and invited the public in the evening to check out all the booths and events. Book Bash Canadian Children’s Literature Festival is a fun-filled, free children’s festival featuring a variety of activities and programs with Canadian children’s authors, illustrators and entertainers. Funding for the Festival, up to $20,000, is made possible through the Muller Scholastic Endowment Fund for Canadian Children’s Literature at the Toronto Public Library Foun-

dation. The Fund was established by Larry Muller, retired president of Scholastic Canada, to create an annual children’s literature festival promoting reading and recognizing the value of Canadian children’s literature to Canadian families. The Festival is held by Toronto Public Library every second year and by a Canadian public library system outside of Toronto every other year. This year, CKPL applied and received the festival funding to host the event, and CKPL Librarian Tanya Sharpe couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out. “Our very dynamic children’s librarian Stephanie Yeoman applied for it a year and a half ago. We all worked on the application and submitted it, and it was accepted,” Sharpe said.

Howloween!

800-plus attend Bash

Continued from page 7

Thanks to community partners, Sharpe said the booths at Book Bash were interactive and interesting for kids, showcasing the different kinds of programs offered at libraries across the municipality. “Libraries are a place that are more than just books. They are a place to discover, so you want the Book Bash to reflect what the library can offer. We say we can’t offer everything for everyone but we definitely have something for everyone, and this encompasses a lot of our community partners, so we’re helping

to spread their information and services, which helps our aim as well, so it’s a win-win for all of us,” Sharpe said. She added the 800-plus students who attended Book Bash enjoyed keynote speaker Kathy Kacer, an award-winning author of more than 20 books that focus on the Second World War and the Holocaust. “I have pictures of the whole room filled with children and they were enraptured; they were hanging on her words. She does a lot of work on World War Two and Holocaust survivors so she talked a lot about the courage that’s

needed and why people survive, and sometimes it’s luck or it’s the courage of other people. The kids were so engaged,” Sharpe noted. With partners such as Ontario Parks, C-K Parks and Recreation, the Ontario Genealogical Society, Kiwanis Reading Buddies, Bkejwanong First Nation (Walpole Island), CK Cyber Pack, Chatham-Kent 4H Lego Engineering Club, C-K Public Health Unit, St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs and area French and English school boards, the venue was filled with fun and engaging activities for kids.

Bold build plans for Dresden They held a ribbon cutting at the site Oct. 22. Mall said she and Depencier and their spouses are proud to call Dresden home and came together for the project to help increase local home inventory and provide options for prospective home buyers. Mall said teaming up with Depencier just made sense. “We’re like-minded people. We teamed up last summer and formed our company,” she said.

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

New home construction has recently heavily focused on Chatham, but that is changing as a group of Dresden natives announced a bold project in the North Kent community recently. Leisure Lane District will see 20 homes built in that subdivision. Local realtor and Dresden native Krista Mall is in partnership in the development with Dave Depencier of Depencier Homes on the project.

20 homes to be built in new subdivision Continued from page 9

“It started with a single-family home and it was like a flip. We then thought we’d look at going bigger.” The focus is indeed on Dresden. “We’re trying to keep things in our community,” Mall said. “We wanted to keep it in Dresden. We all live here. We’re trying to bring people here.” Mall said Dresden offers small-town charm for retirees and families alike. “A lot of retirees love to come here because it’s quiet and safe. But it’s also a great place to raise your kids,” she said. “Many who live here may not work here, but it’s so close to everywhere.” Depencier said optimism is the best policy. “For any community to

grow, you have to take a chance and you have to step outside the box, and that’s what we did,” he said. “Small towns can sometimes get forgotten. If you stick with it and take chances, then you won’t get left in the dust.” Stuart McFadden, director of economic development for the municipality, welcomed the announcement. “It’s great for Dresden and great for Chatham-Kent,” he said. “Dave and Krista, they both live in Dresden. They’re proud of where they live.” North Kent Coun. Jamie McGrail praised the developers for their forethought, investment and quality of work. “Thank you for being a very active part of this community and making

Dresden your home,” she said in a media release. McGrail also praised Dresden residents for making it an attractive community. “Without the citizens, service groups, hometown shops and hockey teams, to name a few things, Dresden would not be what it is today. Neighbours working together raise community together,” she said. Mall said all 20 homes won’t be erected overnight, as construction will take place in tiers. But the subdivision will feature a variety of options, with prices starting under $300,000. That price point is for semi-detached homes, which Mall said are earmarked for retirees and single families.

the appearance of activity inside your home while on vacation or out for the night. If you have a doorbell, minimize the volume while you’re on vacation. Anyone casing your home will be unsure if you’re not home or simply didn’t hear it. Don’t advertise your upcoming vacation on social media, and delay posting photos until you’ve returned to your home. Consider installing a home security system. If a professional system is not in your budget, doorbell cameras and wireless security cameras can be purchased at an electronics store and installed yourself.

Here’s what to do in the event of a home break-in: If you arrive home and suspect a break-in has occurred… 1. Do not enter the residence. The intruder may still be inside, or you may disturb evidence. 2. Call the police for assistance, and file a police report. 3. Contact your insurance company within 24 hours.

“There’s also the option of coming across the street and building your own smaller single-family home. They are all on one floor and are about 1,500 square feet,” she said. Larger lots are also available for larger homes. Mall said they will have a model single family home and another semi-detached ready in the spring. Depencier said new housing is of huge importance in Ontario, regardless of the size of the community in question. “In the next ten years, Ontario is going to need one-million new homes. That’s a staggering amount of homes that are required, and we have to do our part right here in Chatham-Kent and Dresden,” he said. “We have to make them affordable and

we have to make them accessible. We are very proud to open our doors and invite new people here.” McFadden said the project will provide additional options to the C-K housing market, one that is short on inventory. “That’s the great thing about Chatham-Kent. Each community has its own special nuance,” he said. “It’s all about where you want to live and in what type of style do you want to live.” McFadden added the project will help grow the population in Chatham-Kent, as housing is in strong demand. “We’ve got to grow our population to take advantage of the jobs that are available,” he said. Much of the larger-scaled

home building taking place in Chatham-Kent is happening in Chatham, Mall said. She pointed to the aggressive largescale build by Maple City Homes in southwest Chatham. But she believes there is no competition between that project and Leisure Lane. In fact, Mall said they are complimentary, just as her work beside fellow Royal LePage Peifer Realty rep Carson Warrener, exclusive listing agent for Maple City Homes is supportive. For additional information on the Leisure Lane District or for sales inquires, visit https:// depencierbuilders.com/ lots-still-available-in-leisure-lane/or contact Mall at kristamall@royallepage. ca.

Safeguard Yourself

At Home • Be wary of anyone who approaches your home as a solicitor, and install a chain lock as an added measure of security. • Be alert when entering or exiting your home, keeping an eye out for anyone or anything suspicious. • If you have workers inside your home, check the locks on all of your home’s windows, including the bathroom, at the end of each day. Around Town • Stay aware of your surroundings. Headphones and texting can increase your vulnerability. • Avoid deserted areas and parking lots, and walk in well-lighted areas at night. • Employ the buddy system when walking at night whenever possible. In the Car • Have your keys in hand before reaching your car, and check your surroundings before unlocking it. • Once inside your car, lock the doors, start the engine and cautiously exit the parking spot without delay. • If you feel you are being followed, or if somebody “taps” your bumper when driving at night, drive to the nearest gas station or populated spot. Flash your lights and honk your horn if needed to get the attention of people around you before getting out of your car. Online • Install an antivirus software on your computer, and keep it up to date. • Use long passwords with a mix of characters, and update passwords every three to six months. • Periodically check your credit reports for evidence of identity theft. Federal law entitles consumers to free copies of their credit report each year, and many banks and credit card companies provide customers with ongoing access to credit scores for free.

If you are inside your home and hear an intruder trying to break in… 1. Make it clear you are home by yelling or flashing lights, and immediately grab your phone. Most burglars are looking for an empty home. 2. If you suspect an intruder is inside your home, and you cannot safely exit, get to a room with a door and lock it. 3. Call 911 and immediately state your name and address for the operator as clearly as possible. 4. Tell the operator that someone is in your house, and remain on the line for further instruction.

Support shown for vulnerable children The Chatham Voice

Staff at the Chatham-Kent Children’s Services in Chatham were decked out in purple in support of Ontario Dress Purple Day Oct. 24. According to the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS), the campaign was launched to raise awareness of the important role adults and communities play in supporting vulnerable youth, promoting every child’s right to safety and well-being. The OACAS had developed classroom resources, based on the theme, “It takes a community to care for kids,” to educate students

about their network of supports. Research shows that ensuring that children and youth are aware of helping adults and organization in their support network offers them an important tool that lessens their vulnerability to harm. “Youth tell us the most important thing we can do is listen. How can you protect a child or youth if you are not engaging with them,” said Nicole Bonnie, CEO of the OACAS. “On Ontario Purple Dress Day, we are asking adults and community partners to think more deeply about how they can better support the safety and well-being of the young people around them.”

Safety Dog Bus Tour Sarah Schofield/The Chatham Voice

Young students from St. Ursula Catholic School got the chance to learn about student safety during a visit from First Student’s fifth annual Safety Dog Bus Tour on Oct. 22. With Chatham being one of 12 stops to visit North America and the only one in Canada, McNaughton Avenue Public School was also selected for a visit where students took part in safety activities and received a bus tour, photo with Safety Dog, school bus safety pledge and more.

2004, as he retrieved signs for newly minted local MP and fellow Conservative Dave Epp. “It’s a job that has to get done. Many hands make light work,” Van Kesteren said. If you thought Van Kes-

teren, an elected official who put more than 500,000 kilometres on his vehicles driving back and forth to Ottawa from Chatham over the years, was just going to fade away, you were mistaken. He paid close attention

to the campaign and supported Epp at every opportunity. He said watching this election was like being a parent watching a child at a key event. “I did have that apprehension that any parent feels. I was thinking, ‘This

is my guy and I sure hope he wins,’” Van Kesteren said. “I was pretty excited.” On Oct. 21, Epp defeated Liberal candidate Katie Omstead, just as Van Kesteren did four years ago.
