Trust gives $1M for trees, cover
FREE!
Walk to end the violence
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
The Ridge Landfill Community Trust recently pledged $1 million to increase tree cover in Chatham-Kent, specifically in South Kent. The trust will provide the cash, while the municipality and the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) have partnered to get the job done. The funds are to be used over a 10-year period to create added forest cover, wetlands and grasslands habitat. Randall Van Wagner, manager, conservation lands and services with the LTVCA, said the funds could be utilized to enhance and create buffer strips along municipal drains and create windbreaks. The buffer strips could be grassland habitat rather than trees. “Trees aren’t always the best solution along the edges of municipal drains,” he said. Van Wagner said the funds will be spent exclusively in South Kent.

Participants at the Zonta Says No To Violence Against Women rally on Nov. 25 were joined this year by OPP and Chatham-Kent police along the Third Street Bridge to help raise awareness about gender-based violence and to help end it. In its seventh year, demonstrators dressed in purple and orange spent a half hour walking along the bridge during the high traffic lunch hour to bring light to the worldwide issue of violence against women.
Nicholls seeks to repeal pit bull ban By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Local MPP Rick Nicholls defended his Private Members Bill to repeal the law that bans pit bulls in Ontario. The bill passed sec-
ond reading Nov. 21 at Queen’s Park. Nicholls said he’s received feedback for and against his bill and he reasserted he’s doing the right thing. Pit bulls were banned in this province in 2005 by
the then Liberal government. It remains the only breed-specific legislation in any province in the country. “Let’s face it, this pit bull ban was put in place because in 2004 a Toronto man was attacked by two
pit bulls,” Nicholls said. “The Attorney General, without any hard evidence, pushed through breed-specific legislation.” He added pit bulls have a bad reputation, and one he said is unjustified.
“We’re going after the wrong end of the leash,” he said. “You have irresponsible owners.” He said the dogs aren’t at fault. “Why are they vicious? Is it in their DNA?”

Ban targets ‘wrong end of the leash’ Continued from page 1
“We have proof it isn’t. They were trained that way,” he said. “If a dog is trained to be vicious,
it will attack.” Nicholls said the breed was popular among folks who were “involved in illegal activities”
and who trained their pit bulls to be vicious. He said the breed-specific legislation doesn’t make people any safer, as all dogs have the potential to bite, depending on how they are trained and treated by their owners. “If you have an irresponsible owner, I don’t care what breed the dog is. If they train the dog to be vicious, whether it is a Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Great Dane, you name the breed, it will be vicious,” he said. The repeal, Nicholls said, has the support of more than 50 animal welfare groups across the province, and more in other jurisdictions. Some of the proponents include the Toronto Humane Society, Ontario Veterinary Medical As-
sociation, Windsor-Essex County Humane Society, the City of London, and the City of Ottawa. Nicholls said he understands where opponents are coming from when they voice their opposition to his proposal. “Do I want safe communities? Absolutely, yes. But we have to keep our communities safe and be protected against dangerous dogs of all breeds and protect dogs from cruel and irresponsible owners,” he said. “We must better inform the public on how to approach dogs they may not know.” His Private Members Bill comes on the heels of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act (PAWS) which Nicholls said significantly increases penalties for serious offenders and would, if passed, be the strongest in Canada. “Anyone involved in animal cruelty is going to face some very stiff fines and it could in-
clude imprisonment depending on the severity of what they’ve done,” Nicholls said. “We want to protect people and pets. My bill wants to protect through safety, and personal accountability.” Nicholls’ bill still has a long way to go. He said the bill is to go into the general government committee’s hands. Best-case scenario for Nicholls would be for it to be called in the spring. “Then we’d invite the public to attend an open meeting to give deputations for and against,” he said. “Can we make it better? How? What are your thoughts?” Information from those deputations would be collected and merged and the bill could then possibly be amended with the new information. “Then it comes back onto the Legislative floor for a third reading where it is then debated, followed by a vote.

LTVCA hopes to garner added greening funds Continued from page 1
It will be spent on land bordered by Kent Bridge Road to the east, Merlin Road to the West, between the Thames River to the north and the Lake Erie shoreline to the south. Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff credited South Kent Coun. Anthony Ceccacci for being an “instigator, in a good way” for helping to make this a reality. The councillor said it is something he had been working on for months. “It’s a great feeling to know that six-and-a-half months of hard work is going right back into our community to our environment and it’s going to be a legacy project for the community,” he said. “It’s just really a good feeling to see this amazing benefit coming to our community and to know we have a partnership over the next 10 years that’s going to benefit our children and our children’s children.” Ceccacci said he may have gotten the proverbial ball rolling, but credited the Ridge Landfill Community Trust for doing the heavy lifting by committing to providing the funding. Cathy Smith, project manager with Waste Connections Canada, owners of The Ridge Landfill, said the firm recently planted 11,000 trees on the property around the landfill and committed 25 acres of land to be returned to its natural state. And then Ceccacci came along to pique their interest. The matter went to the committee that oversees the disbursement of the trust funds after that. “We are incredibly proud that the Trust has elected to provide this money to be used to protect the local environment and create a healthier ecosystem for future generations,” she said. “This will be a legacy for this existing Community Trust, which is made up of very dedicated and hard-working members, many of whom have been

with the Trust for decades.” Van Wagner said Chatham-Kent has about six per cent natural cover – Carolinian forest, prairie and wetlands, the lowest of any upper-tier municipality in Ontario. In terms of tree cover, the number hovers at about three per cent. Instead, Chatham-Kent is like one massive garden. “We have lost some due to tree cutting but we’ve been planting around 100,000 trees per year,” he said. “A million dollars? Jeez, it’s huge. We can really see some impact from this.” No one will say how many trees will be planted with this commitment as natural grassland and wetlands could be involved, but Van Wagner said each seedling costs about $1. Further, Mark Peacock, CEO for the LTVCA, is confident they’ll be able to land other partners for the project, adding additional dollars. “We are confident with the assistance of other partners, the funds can be turned into $3 million over the next decade,” he said. “But that $3 million wouldn’t happen without this generous donation.”
Bruce Corcoran/The Chatham Voice
Linda McKinlay, chair of the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, said staff and board members are excited to work with the municipality to add to a $1 million commitment by Ridge Landfill Community Trust towards creating natural habitat in South Kent over the next decade. South Kent Coun. Anthony Ceccacci and Mayor Darrin Canniff look on.
Linda McKinlay, chair of the LTVCA, said everyone connected with the conservation authority is looking forward to getting to work. “Our board of directors and staff are very excited about this donation as we have a proven track record of finding matching dollars; for turning this donation into something greater,” she said. “But this announce-
ment, oh my, it’s big!” Earlier this month, Ceccacci successfully introduced a motion to direct municipal administration to prepare a report with the goal of planting a minimum of one-million trees within four years, identifying public

Family appreciates new home
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Dozens of volunteers, family members and
community supporters packed into a new house on Woods Street on Nov. 20 to watch Cassadi Pryor and her nieces and nephews take possession of their new home. Pryor and the kids are the beneficiaries of the sixth Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent home build. She, with Gavin, 15, Isaiah, 12, Brooklyn 11, and Cailyn, 9, move into a fresh start. “The home that we lived in was the start of some of their nightmares,” she said of the children. “For them to have something that doesn’t have a sad or emotional memory attached to it that they have to be faced with every day is kind of nice for them. To see a new beginning with their own mojo in there, it’s what they need.” Pryor was humble after receiving the ceremonial keys to the house. “I am standing here today, in a home, a beautiful home, made from the resources, hours, hearts, spirits and minds of ev-

eryone around me and the community that I grew up in and love very much,” she said. “Today has been a very fortunate day. It’s been a long time coming. It’s one of those days you are just thankful and you celebrate your blessings.” Nancy McDowell, executive director of Habitat C-K, was moved to tears at the dedication. “We’re so thankful that for your dream, we were able to come together. Through the staff, the volunteers, the community – look at the people that are represented,” she said to Pryor. “I’m so glad it’s now your reality and your home.” Pryor thanked everyone involved. “I know what it means to be here. It’s more than just the words ‘thank you’ or ‘appreciation.’ It’s a soul-rocking feeling. This is more than just a house. It’s the love. I couldn’t have done it without the community in which I grew up.” Richard Drouillard,

to the gathering of volunteers. “Whether you swung a hammer, laid insulation or picked up a paint brush, we thank you. The house is truly a testament to the amazing things that can be achieved when a community of volunteers from all walks of life comes together. This house was built with kindness, love and the generosity of this community.” Drouillard said the scheduling and co-ordinating of the build process is nothing short of mind boggling. “Each home is truly an impressive accomplishment,” he said. “It’s been a blessing to watch these builds come together over the years. I am awestruck at what this organization has accomplished. Six homes across Chatham-Kent. Six families forever changed. Six mass projects co-ordinated with skilled trades, volunteers, staff and donors.”

president of the board for Habitat C-K, credited two people with helping to ensure this year’s home was done right, Anne Taylor and Melanie Austin. Taylor is volunteer co-ordinator for Habitat C-K, while Austin is past president and a member of the family selection team. He said the pair “went so far above and beyond to make sure this build was done right.” “Neither of them planned on spending so much time on the build site, but they saw a need and being the truly selfless people that they are, they gave up their free time to make sure this home got done, and all our volunteers had a great time on the site.” Taylor said the effort has gone into building more than just a house. “In all the weather conditions and in between, to give the time to not only build a home, but a better and brighter future for Cassadi and her family, thank you,” she said

Ban needs less bite The Private Members Bill from MPP Rick Nicholls to lift the ban on ownership of pit bull breed dogs is one that, if done right and properly combined with the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, may just keep everyone safer from life-threatening dog attacks. That’s a big if. The argument that owners are the issue, not the breed of dog, is mostly a correct one. If dogs weren’t trained to attack, people and other animals wouldn’t be in any danger. Any breed, however, can bite when scared or provoked. The main problem, however, is that there are bad animal owners out there and how do we stop largebreed dogs that can kill when they attack from falling into hands of the wrong owners? Stronger laws and regulations about who can own pit bulls, German shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers and other breeds that can kill or severely main people could be a consideration, as well as mandatory training for dog and owner. When a small breed dog nips or bites, it usually doesn’t involve life-threatening injuries, but if any dog has a history of biting, mandatory muzzle laws when outdoors should be in effect. What is worrisome about lifting the ban and punishing owners after a tragedy strikes is that a hefty fine is no consolation to the victim of the dog attack or their family. And when a large dog, like a pit bull or Rottweiler, attacks, they clamp their jaws and it is difficult to get them to disengage from their victim. Ask any victim who has been severely maimed or families of children whose child died from a dog attack, and they will tell you lifting the ban scares them. Punishment after the crime, instead of a preventative approach will not make anyone feel safer. When this bill goes to committee for discussion and regulations are drafted, there needs to be protection of the public with mandatory muzzle laws and training, which ensures good dog owners are not punished and bad owners are forced to comply with the law or give up their dogs for adoption. Any breed of dog can bite when scared or provoked or trained to do so, and the public needs to feel safe. With stricter laws and regulations, more resources for investigation and apprehension will be needed for animal control so tragedies can be avoided.

Opinion
Net removal hurts neighbourhood Editor’s note: This letter is addressed to Glenn Harding of Chatham-Kent Public Works. Sir: There was an “encroachment notice” letter was in my mailbox on the evening of Nov. 6. It is disheartening to receive such a letter. A basketball net that securely sits at the curb on our road is creating complaints within our neighbourhood (or the city), to the point where your department goes out of their way to leave a letter in my mailbox? The net is no further in the way than a car parked on the street. We have approximately (minimum) 20 children within our block of homes on Maryknoll/ Lancefield. This neighbourhood we live in is a well-sought-out area due to the families, schools and amenities in our area. This area is the perfect area where many families, couples, friends, dog lovers of all ages go for bicycle rides and walks.
Vehicles only infrequently pass along our street. The park close by, Ellis Park, as lovely as it is, research the statistics. How often it is used? I can confidently guess there is more activity within my block of residence than there is at this community park. We are a family with six children. A few are aging and moving onward with their lives. However, our youngest is four. All are actively involved in sports, the community and OUTSIDE time. We are always outside with our children. Backyard. Front yard. The street. Our road is the perfect road (and a memorable one) where we have taught our kids to toss the football, learn to ride a bike, play road hockey, rollerblade and, yes, shoot some hoops. We have decorations, sidewalk chalk, spray chalk, chairs to watch the kids, flowers for them to water.
Feel free to drive by and witness our busy healthy outdoor activity with our children. And this is what you view from the front. It does not include the sandbox, kids’ fort, pool, trampoline, swings/slide, yard games we have set up in the back. As a human being, representative of the municipality, perhaps even a parent – this should be your ideal goal: Our neighbourhood; to see families and children active outside. That’s the way the world was 20-30 years ago before social media, video games and streaming services consumed the young minds of children. A few years back, I called the city to inquire and obtain a sign that read “Deaf child in the area.” I was told those no longer exist. So, we purchased some signs on amazon for our lawn, advising people to drive slow. We have a daughter who is labelled as such.
Wearing her helmet and rollarblading or on a bicycle limits her ability to safely hear with her one (below normal) hearing level. We adapted and dealt with the situation. We are the second-tolast house at the end. There is no reason why people need to go 50-70 km/h at the end of the road or starting off. We often yell at drivers to slow down, sure with the fear of repercussions. But our children’s safety is worth it. Perhaps your focus could also be on the holes/sinkhole along the sewer 100 feet away from the basketball net, where the two pylons have been resting for many months. It’s also where my children ride bikes and walk to school. I ask you this, re-organize your thought process and priorities. There is no difference of that basketball net sitting along the curb in comparison to a vehicle.

“Six times showing what a community can do when we care about each other.” Austin said there are three components for becoming a Habitat family, the family element, the need for affordable housing and willingness to partner with Habitat. The latter requires completing at least 500 hours of “sweat equity” in helping to build the home. She said Pryor, with the help of family and friends, topped 700 hours of such equity.
Pryor said the handson involvement with the project holds a special place in her heart. “Habitat is so much more than meets the eye. They are much deeper than I ever expected to encounter,” she said. “I know they build homes and have a Re-Store. They bring people together and work to build and ensure the foundation is strong and steady. They help the community grow in a positive direction.” But Pryor said it was more than just bricks and
mortar. “What I didn’t realize that as Habitat was helping to build those very things, they were happening within me as well. My nieces and nephews and I are so extremely thankful and appreciative,” she continued. “I’m also so very appreciative of the blessings that have helped me to build me.” Habitat’s Kaitlyn Ferren, chair of family services, said in order for a family or individual to qualify for the program, they do need to have an income
and families purchase their home through an affordable, zero-interest mortgage geared to their income – making the transition to homeownership possible. She added that this year’s project was accomplished with the support of more than 20 local businesses, the municipality, and thousands of volunteer hours from the community. Chatham Coun. Brock McGregor said the effort by everyone involved is appreciated.
Turn library late fees into food The Chatham Voice
The Chatham-Kent Public Library is running its first ever Food for Fines initiative this week. Until Nov. 30, patrons can bring in non-perishable food items to any CKPL branch and, as a thank you, CKPL will waive $5 in overdue fines per donated item, up to a max-
imum of $50 per account. Donations will be given to local organizations to benefit people in communities across Chatham-Kent. The Food for Fines initiative can only be applied to fines for items that were returned late. Patrons are responsible for paying for any lost or damaged items or other fees on
their account. Have no fines and want to still participate? CKPL will gladly take donations and make sure they get to those who need them this Giving Season. For more information, call 519354-2940 or visit ckpl.ca/donate.
“What we know is that list (affordable housing waiting list) grows every year. And that’s a symptom of what’s a national and regional affordable housing crisis,” he said.
“It has tremendous local impact. So to get to see that in bricks and mortar today affords a really great opportunity to celebrate the small victories that we need along the way.”

Candy cane Armoury The Chatham Voice
Four Diamond Events (FDE) and To Suit Your Fancy have announced details of a new experience coming to The Chatham Armoury and Tecumseh Park this holiday season that will benefit many local charities. The Armoury Christmas Market is the first ever Christmas Market of its kind in Chatham and will run Dec. 16 to Dec. 22. The historic Chatham Armoury will be trans-
formed into a Christmas scene. The idea was born when, Dan Warrener, owner of the Armoury, approached Lisa Lester, from FDE & To Suit Your Fancy, with an idea to light up the outside of the building with state-of-the-art, modern technology called Projection Mapping. Such light displays have been done in large cities around the world on large buildings telling a story with moving lights, lasers and music.
