Stephanie Richardson

Jessica Ashley is an award-winning commercial photographer and artist who works within the beautiful community of Serenbe. Her work has been featured in numerous national publications from Southern Living to Time Magazine. She studied painting, sculpture, and photography at Savannah College of Art and Design. Depth and form drive Jessica’s process.

Robert Lederman is a retired real estate attorney by profession, but a photographer by avocation. Bob’s passion for photography can be traced back to that magical Chanukah night when he received a Kodak Brownie, his first camera. An avid traveler, Bob loves to photograph the wider world. Some of his images can be seen at the Chatt Hills Gallery at Serenbe.

Of her career as a photographer, Stephanie Richardson says, “I thought I was going to be in New York shooting fantastical still-life scenes for fancy brands…that’s why I got tiny dogs! But I ended up everywhere but New York shooting the one thing that I’d begun my career with and was terrified to photograph…people. I got past it, and it’s been one of the biggest joys in my life. Now I can’t imagine my life or career any other way!”

Support photographers were Judy Walker, Billy Newman, and Jeff Sudmeier

“Covid had hit by the time of my husband’s first birthday since his passing in July. I was at a loss to know how to remember him in a way that could express my love for him. I decided to make his favorite cake and send it to the local fire station for the men who had been so kind and responded when he fell several times during his illness. What began as a compromise felt so right that I have decided it will be the way I celebrate his birthday even when Covid is gone.

“Our favorite place in Serenbe is a stone by the little waterfall with the words: Be still and know that I am God. Be still and know that I am. Be still and know. Be still. Be. This time of forced stillness has granted our family with a gift to do just that...to BE. This wonderful place continues to give us the best present ever...BEing in the present.

“It’s been a fun ride and we toast with gratitude the twelve years we have lived in Serenbe. The time allowed us to grow – yes even at our age – and to enjoy the friendship of some of the brightest, most energetic and caring people. We hold these friendships dear as we move to Asheville. Come visit us.”

“To some, we are known as Lynn’s husband and Alan’s wife. To many friends at Serenbe, we are a couple. Behind the scenes, we are Team Merrill, complementary personalities who bring out the best in each other. The pandemic encouraged us to be puzzle builders, porch people…and to exhale and take joy in each other. Sydney and Taylor came from Nashville for Father’s Day weekend. While sheltering in place, this was Gram and Pop’s only chance to be reunited with children and grand’s. Phone calls, texts and photos are wonderful, but no technology is as good as a hug!”

20

Honey Hurwitz, Julie Reyburn, Cindy Lederman, Helen Vantine, and Wendy Murray walk the labyrinth ~ Photo Robert Lederman

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world. Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and prayer tools. The Labyrinth of Serenbe is a replica of the one in Chartres Cathedral. It was built by the residents with rocks brought from many locations.

“One of the unexpected benefits of working from home for 3+ months was lots of time with my four-legged housemates. Being home more enabled me to spend a lot of quality time with one pet in the last days of his life, and my newest adoptees quickly grew more confident in their new home. It has also allowed me to spend time helping some community cats that have taken up residence in Mado. In turn, they keep me grounded in the present moment and are live-in alarm clocks that remind me to get up early to give them breakfast. Most of Serenbe sees Opie sitting in the windows of my house when they walk or drive by. It only seems fitting that Opie and I are viewed through the window during our self-isolation photo.”

We made the most of this epidemic’s silver lining - quality time with our family.

“Alec and I were very fortunate to be able to work from Serenbe for much of the time. As part-time residents (most-time, now), it made us realize how much we love our time here, and how that future date when the dream comes true and we can be here full time can’t come fast enough. I’m sure most neighbors know us from the 87 walks a day the pups get, or the porch sitting when the pups announce every passer-by. Sadly our oldest boxer, Cody, died shortly after this photo, and being able to spend so much time and attention with him was so meaningful.”

“We wanted our quarantine photo to accurately portray what it was like for us! Our youngest George was 6 weeks old when quarantine hit and our other two children William and Emmeline were out of school... the juggling act of running a business, working a corporate job, homeschooling two kids and managing a newborn was.. shall we say an experience that shaped and challenged us! Throw in a bathroom renovation and it was nothing short of chaos!” We are grateful for our time together and also grateful that it’s over!”

“Serenbe, the perfect place to be serene during a pandemic. Respectful neighbors, caring friends, and space to enjoy life 6’ apart have made this past year bearable and at times endearing and joyous. I have loved the trail walk conversations and porch gatherings that have given life affirming spirit to uncertainty and fear. This is an amazing village. “Before Covid-19, we had an early morning walking group that was part exercise, part therapy and a whole lot of wonderful sisterhood. “If we could travel back in time to our January 2019 selves, they would not believe that our lives could change so completely in such a short span of time. However, 18 months, a new community, a new house, a new baby, 2 new careers, and a global pandemic later, here we are. Dazed, we look around and find the landscape of our lives entirely new; but at our core we are still two kids who fell in love 20 years ago and are still dreaming together of what’s to come.”

“We moved from Minnesota to Georgia for warmer weather and to be closer to our daughter and her family. We chose Serenbe for it’s rural setting, it’s emphasis on art, community, and environmental sustainability. We have enjoyed every moment of the last 13 years. We will carry Serenbe values with us the rest of our lives.”

“Our precious time in Serenbe helped us reconnect to Mother Nature, our values, our goals and ourselves. Living in a tiny “shotgun shack” was a transformational study in essentialism, organization and simplicity. We treasure the genuine friendships and connections we made and will forever hold dear the feelings of wholesomeness and purity we felt that first time we visited. Slow down, do less, feel more.”

“While the pandemic has clearly been and continues to be horrific, for some of us it has also offered the opportunity to deepen our personal relationships while gaining renewed appreciation of what we really value in our lives. Our love of horses brought us together as friends, but the long rides and time spent cleaning out stalls during this time of semi-quarantine, has strengthened our knowledge of where our lives have connection. Everything from shared military family backgrounds, raising children, the pain and sorrow of losing parents, our faith, and let’s not forget our lifelong bond with our horses! Covid has caused many of us to slow down our lives a bit, and given us the precious commodity of time. Time to truly connect, appreciate the beautiful environment we live in at Serenbe, and value the here and now…most especially the people (and horses) who make our lives worthwhile.”

65

“What once was a four year plan quickly became our reality because of the quarantine. The slower pace of Serenbe has brought us closer as a family and we were able to welcome Three (our horse) into our lives. Missing from this photo is my 19 year old daughter Ansley who at the time was stuck in Tucson.

“During the pandemic, our studio was closed for almost 2 months. I really missed the community, and like a lot of us, felt like I somewhat lost my purpose in life. This feeling sat heavy for a while. But then one day, I went over to the studio and hung in the aerial hammock, and started playing around with my aerial practice. For that little while, I forgot my worries, and felt light-hearted and free once again. The heaviness of the world lifted and was able to find some peace within. It was a reminder that when things weigh you down, try your best to find some playfulness, whether it be dancing, exploring this beautiful place we get to call home, or hanging upside down. It can truly shift our perspective, sometimes literally....

“Surviving 2020 in a house alone provided ample time to quilt, study French, refine drawing skills — lots of creative time. But what it didn’t provide was ample opportunities to prepare and share beautiful meals with people I cherish. I’m so grateful to live where daily long walks are possible. Making something, learning something, long walks outside — the keys to sanity in 2020.”

“I have worked from home since moving to Serenbe in 2015, so nothing really changed for me with the shelter-in-place, but Bowie definitely had to get used to social distancing while on walks! She is so used to most people stopping and petting her (or her jumping right up on the golf carts for pets), so it was definitely an adjustment. It was really nice to have the opportunity to get to know many neighbors that spent more time here during lockdown - even if it was from chatting across the street!

“The best part of quarantining in Serenbe is finally hitting the nature trails. One foot in front of the other, exploring all the paths through our local neighborhoods and parks. It’s now a shared obsession!”

“Still at Serenbe is being grounded by Mother Earth, warmed by the radiant sun, relaxed by the gentle breeze, and connected by the sounds of nature to something bigger than ourselves to serve the greater good.”

“For the last 8 years, Serenbe has been a safe natural refuge for our family. Despite the health threats and life constraints during the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been gifted the renewed appreciation of this special community. From the morning trail walks to the evening fire pit gatherings, we feel so blessed for the peace, comfort, laughter and friendships that our Serenbe home and our natural surroundings have provided us.

“In the time of quarantine I found myself paying attention to the immediate space around me, especially my backyard that I had unintentionally neglected for years. My kids and I took on the project of turning red clay into a vegetable and flower garden and now we enjoy our time out here more than ever.”

“We’ve been connected to Serenbe since the early 90’s when a friend of ours sold the farm house to Steve and Marie. We always knew we’d live here. We first bought (and sold) a Farmette, but we were always in love with the square brown barn at Crossroads. It finally became ours last fall! We renovated our carriage house and our daughters Olivia and Elsa have come back home from NYC and DC to weather the COVID pandemic. Serenbe is the perfect place for us: Arts and Agriculture. Kim hangs out with the artists and Pierre hangs out with the farmers. Our favorite thing is hiking with our dog Baloney.

Local Heros at Work Loran Hygema his wife Melanie and son Alex are original Serenbe residents. Loran’s company Art Print Direct, was a vital part of the Still Serenbe Project, he printed the photographs in this book for the final exhibit, then they were given to the residents. Loran has worked for several years with Alison Goldwater Ross and the Barry & Peggy Goldwater Foundation to organize and archive the photos of Barry Goldwater for an exhibit at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale Museum of the West in Arizona. When the Goldwater Foundation learned that the Navajo Nation was the third only to New York and New Jersey in the nation’s declared COVID-19 hot spots, it shifted focus to create a Relief Mission. Partnering with Blok Industries to donate and deliver approximately 20,000 hazmat suits to the COVID-19 affected Navajo and Hopi Tribes, the Goldwater Foundation reached out to its supporters to ask for help. When the Goldwater Foundation called, Loran responded by picking up precious medical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and driving them to Arizona. The first delivery of an unprecedented 20,000 donated hazmat suits reached first responders on the Reservations on April 23rd, 24th and 25th of 2020. Our local heros.

Thank you Loran!
