SPRING 2014

Manufacturing and STEM Fair 2014 This year, students were welcomed at the door by mentors from Portville High School, registered and led in groups into the gym/display area. Here the students visited a wide variety of stations where they learned what the manufacturers made, how they made it and where in the world the products go. Students met with engineers, machinists, welders and technicians and were able to interact with scale models of compressor installation and review the process of manufacturing lightening arresters. They were introduced to sophisticated fabrication and machining methods, precision fluid-film bearings… and actually tried their hand at welding. Most important, students learned how to pursue careers in engineering, welding, machining and manufacturing along with the education and skills the employers require for these careers.

The center of the gym was devoted to academics – Jamestown Community College, Genesee Community College, Alfred State College, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and St. Bonaventure University, as well as faculty and students from CA-BOCES. Mary Eileen Wood from YTRSEF helped students engage in hands on STEM activities and view a display of the 15 top STEM careers with most impressive salaries.

Thank you to the students, faculty and staff of Portville Central School, Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation and the following MAST members for their continued support of Dream It. Do It. WNY: Dresser-Rand, CUTCO, Napoleon Engineering, Mazza Mechanical Services, Pierce Steel, Lufkin–RMT, SolEpoxy, Abbott Welding and Keystone Tool and Die. 2

SPRING 2014

ENACTUS Energy to the 8th Power Saturday, April 5, 2014 Recently, DIDI helped students with an original project for local 7th and 8th grade students, introducing young scientists to alternative sources of energy including solar, geothermal and wind. DIDI helped in the planning and implementation of the event, including meeting with students, organizing lesson plans, contacting schools, arranging meetings with local manufacturers and assisting the day of the event.

Olean and Allegany students met at the Dresser-Rand Challenger Center, participated in collaborative activities and listened to presentations by CIR Electric of Buffalo, NY and Trane (Geothermal) of Rochester, NY. Students then created a solar-powered marshmallow oven as well as their own unique windmill. The day concluded with a prize for the fastest/strongest windmill and a reminder to “Save Energy!” Skills required throughout the day were measurement, geometry, problem solving, collaboration and creativity.

ENACTUS

Dream It. Do It. now has an office in the Swan Business building at St. Bonaventure University and continues to be involved with ENACTUS. Each fall semester, the project coordinator meets with members of ENACTUS to help make the connections between the SBU students’ proposed projects and local manufacturers as well as the school curriculum. The objective is to reveal to local students the manufacturing career possibilities in our area, the necessary skills required by employers and the education needed. 3
