ALTOS DE CHAVÓN: OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISITING STUDENTS The Altos de Chavón School of Design, a pioneer in the teaching of art and design in the Dominican Republic, is an educational center with worldwide impact. Founded in 1983 with the aim of satisfying the country’s growing commercial and industrial demands, The School offers programs of study, of both long and short duration, in the areas of communication design, fashion design, fine arts, illustration, digital design, interior design, photography, film production, and architecture. World-renowned Variety Magazine recently ranked Chavón as one of the “Stellar Film Schools in 2017.” Through the more than 2,000 graduates from its two-year college-level programs and 15,000 participants in its short courses, The School has had an impact on the world of design both nationally and internationally. In 2006, the New York publication V Magazine named The Altos de Chavón School of Design “one of the 13 best design schools in the world”.

THE CAMPUS AT ALTOS DE CHAVÓN Located in the southeast of the Dominican Republic, in a natural setting bordered by the winding Chavón River and with views of the mountains to the north, the village of Altos de Chavón was founded, in 1976, as a dynamic center for art in many disciplines. The location of The School of Design in this unique site offers students peace and seclusion and promotes intense immersion in educational pursuits, whether in exchange programs or for certificates at the Associate Degree level. The School’s Altos de Chavón campus consists of nine classrooms, a screening room, a computer lab, a 12,000-volume library, an exhibition gallery, and student and faculty housing. It is also adjacent to the Regional Archaeological Museum and the Davidoff Artist in Residency studios. The brick and coral-stone buildings of Altos de Chavón house art studios, crafts workshops, galleries, stores, and restaurants. Painters, designers, artisans, writers, and musicians come to Chavón from different parts of the world to create, teach, and learn.

AFFILIATION WITH PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN, NEW YORK Since 1983, The Altos de Chavón School of Design has been affiliated with New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design, an educational institution founded in 1896 that enjoys a great international reputation for its dedication to excellence in the fields of art and design. Under the 2+2 Affiliation Program, students who graduate from Chavón’s college-level program may apply to the third year of their specialty in Parsons, thereby gaining the opportunity to earn a Bachelor’s degree from one of the world’s most important institutions of art and design education.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES The School’s location in the Caribbean, at the hub of the Americas, is an ideal location for students wishing to experience new cultures and environments. The Altos de Chavón campus offers easy access to airports, nearby towns, and the capital city of Santo Domingo, the site of The School’s urban campus. Since its establishment, Chavón’s facilities have hosted groups of students accompanied by faculty from international art and design programs at such schools as the New York Academy of Art, Philadelphia University, Millikin University, Bethel University, Parsons School of Design, and The New School. The costs listed in the following page include experienced local staff support during a group’s stay. Field trips and art and cultural experience can be arranged at additional cost.
