Restoration Potential Protection of Hatchineha Ranch will contribute substantially to ongoing efforts to restore the watershed of the Kissimmee River and the Everglades. Restoring wetlands on Hatchineha Ranch will improve water retention and allow for raising water levels in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes (all related to improving water quantity, quality, distribution and timing for the entire watershed). Restoration will also increase wildlife habitat and contribute to both the long-term Kissimmee River and the greater Everglades ecosystem restoration efforts. Wetlands over much of the ranch’s 5,134 acres have been drained by ditches or converted to pasture. Similar conditions once existed at The Nature Conservancy’s Disney Wilderness Preserve, which lies on the opposite side of Lake Hatchineha. Conservancy land managers and biologists were able to restore most wetlands on the preserve within 10 years after taking ownership of the land. Experience at The Disney Wilderness Preserve also shows that overgrown scrub can once again support native wildlife, such as the Florida scrub-jay, and that diverse groundcover habitat can be restored over uplands once covered in nothing but bahia grass.

nature wins a second chance In central Florida, housing developments and strip malls seem to mushroom almost overnight. A once rolling landscape of ranches and wildlands is being fragmented by increasingly clogged roadways. Lakes are being ringed with homes and docks. Urban sprawl’s seemingly inevitable spread southward from metropolitan Orlando has left many in the region wondering if there will soon be no more wild spaces, large arching oak trees and undeveloped lake shores left in the region. Against this backdrop, The Nature Conservancy is poised to protect a key 5,134-acre ranch, nearly completing a circle of conservation lands around Lake Hatchineha. This endeavor is critical to protect water quality and water storage in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, restore the Kissimmee River and the northern Everglades, and to protect habitat for rare plants and wildlife. For decades, The Nature Conservancy and government agencies have worked with willing sellers to protect lands in this region. Today, Lake Hatchineha is almost completely surrounded by conservation land. Hatchineha Ranch is one of the last remaining large properties left. The Nature Conservancy is working with partners to secure the funding needed to protect Hatchineha Ranch by pursuing innovative solutions like off-site mitigation and conservation banking. Those who join us in this effort have the chance to participate in one of the most significant and creative conservation projects in central Florida.
