CHAZ NEWTON-SMITH
Originally from Bristol, Chaz developed his painting skills studying Fine Art BA (Hons) at the University of Northampton. He moved to Manchester in 2004 and has since focused the majority of his work on large urban landscapes, many of which are based on buildings in and around Manchester. His distinctive, oil-on-canvas style leaves plenty of large, textural brushstrokes packed with plenty of power and punch. Chaz also uses a digital workflow in the same style as his oil paintings. In December 2018 Chaz was involved in a serious traffic accident while commuting by bike to his day job at Manchester Airport. This resulted in multiple, significant injuries for which Chaz is still in recovery and, for the foreseeable future, is unable to work. ALL HANDS... This exhibition has come about because we, as Chaz’s family and friends, think that it’s time for an all-hands-on-deck approach to showcase some of his incredible paintings and digital artwork and put some of our personal collections up for sale, several of which are being shown for the very first time. Our aim is to see that through this auction and art sale new opportunities may be kick-started allowing Chaz to get back to his roots, passions and an easel as soon as possible.

In recent years Chaz has embraced new techniques and a digital workflow enabling him to create and distribute work in his classic style of broad and aggressive brushstrokes, often featuring well known urban locations. The following pieces are available to be reproduced at any scale and prints will be exclusively available for order on the night. Please discuss your requirements with our team on the night. All prints will be produced post event and mailed to you.
IAIN ANDREWS
“My
paintings begin as a dialogue, both with a particular Folk Tale and also with an image from art history – often a painting by an Old Master that may then be used as a starting point from which to playfully but reverently deviate. I am interested in how stories are retold and re-imagined, and how the retelling alters and embellishes the original even as it seeks to render it vital and alive once again for a new audience. Along with this concern comes a question of how modern developments may be balanced by a dialogue with established traditions and past narratives, and yet not become nostalgic. Whereas in the past, the artist or thinker had the shared symbolic order provided by religion within which to refer and ground their work, the artist today must find a way of surviving the bewildering plurality and subjectivity that has become the norm, if what they have to say is to maintain any force or credibility.

ALAN HAWKINS
Alan Hawkins was born on 11th January 1950 in Ashton-on-Mersey, Manchester. As a child he drew a lot, being attracted to nature especially. The Head of his school strongly recommended to his father that Alan should continue his studies in art. At that time, art was not recognised as a career, and Alan left school at the age of 15. At the age of 21 he went to Northwich College of Art as a mature student on the strength of his paintings without qualifications, leaving in 1973 with a Dip.A.D. Shortly after finishing Art College he started working for a large advertising agency. After 10 years as a graphic designer, he realised he was hardly painting, which he felt was the main thing missing in his life. He took a bold step and became a full time artist and has been painting ever since. In 1982, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters accepted 3 of his paintings. He has had his work accepted by the Pannett Gallery in Whitby, Warrington Art Gallery, Stockport Gallery and The Mall Gallery London amongst others. In 2010, Alan had a four month solo exhibition at Salford Art Gallery, featuring his ‘Father’s Fears’ paintings. In 2012 part of his latest work was exhibited at the Buy Art Fair in Manchester and his ‘Father’s Fears’ were exhibited in a gallery in Alderley Edge where the national newspaper Daily Star featured an article on this. He has given demonstrations to various schools and art societies. The most recent was at Salford Art Gallery. Alan has fulfilled numerous private commissions in the United Kingdom. He has also painted celebrities such as Matthew Kelly, Robert Powell and Chris Eubank. He was commissioned by The Royal Variety Club to paint Les Dawson. As a result of this he became recognised as a portrait painter which led him to be approached to paint portraits of 5 entrepreneurs featured on The Sunday Times Rich List. In 1990 Alan was featured twice on regional television highlighting his Whitby painting named ‘Left to Cope’.
LEFT LIGHTHOUSE Oil on cavas 70cm x 60cm | 2013
In 1995, Alan saw a feature on Princess Diana in a school for children with special needs in Japan which compelled him to paint a portrait of the Princess holding a child. The first print of a limited edition of this oil painting was sent to St. James’s Palace as a gift to the Princess. She acknowledged this thanking him with a letter, where she expressed she found it “ a moving and happy memento of her recent visit to Japan”. For the last 30 years Alan Hawkins has made a living purely from his art.
