One of the most important classroom lessons is knowing when to abandon the classroom altogether. Getting out of the classroom and into the world is a lesson that the Sisters of Saint Joseph’s have been preaching since Chestnut Hill College was founded in 1924. The Sisters were never ones to shy away from hard work and were known to roll up their sleeves and help others. This ethos finds its way throughout the school, as students constantly volunteer for causes near and dear to their hearts. Each year, retreats led by Campus Ministry attract who seek not just academic, but spiritual reflection and growth. This group, which welcomes all faiths, also helps guide students through their time on campus. Having such a deeply rooted tradition of faith has helped Chestnut Hill College thrive for over 85 years, as we have adapted and embraced the challenges of modern education. In fact, the campus you will enter as a First Year student will be radically different than the one you tearfully leave as a senior. Take for example the land we purchased at nearby Sugarloaf, which nearly doubled the size of campus. Truly, we are a college on the rise.

Opponents don’t always know what a Griffin is before a game. Afterward, this is not a problem. Stepping out of Fournier Hall, you glance down to the bottom of the hill to see some furious competition. The softball team turning a double play. The tennis squad hitting cross-court winners. The soccer team dominating the goal. Everywhere you look, you know that the Griffins are serious about their athletics. With 14 Division II teams, Chestnut Hill College competes with schools up and down the Eastern seaboard, battling for conference, regional and national championships. The basketball teams draw crowds in Sorgenti Arena and our outdoor teams frustrate opponents on a brand new, fully lit, artificial turf field. A fitness center features modern equipment and facilities designed to elevate any Griffin’s athletic ability. In the last few years, the Chestnut Hill College Athletics Program has cemented itself as a regional powerhouse in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, producing CACC Women’s Soccer Player of the Year Lauren Riff and National Lacrosse Hall of Fame member and coach of the men’s team, Brian Dougherty. We produce

Welcome to the world’s largest biology lab. You might know it as Fairmount Park. Fairmount Park and Chestnut Hill College are intertwined simply because you step off one and go right into the other. That means unbelievable access to one of the world’s largest urban parks, which is a sprawling outdoor maze of quiet streams, roaring rivers, natural wildlife and one particularly rare species: outdoorus loverous, a person who can’t get enough fresh air. Stroll the park in the fall when the leaves burst with thousands of colors, engage in an epic snowball fight during the season’s first snowfall or simply wander around aimlessly on the first beautiful spring day of the year. It’s a year-round biology lab for our students.

In 20-some-odd minutes, you can go from our serene campus to the metro-suburban streets of Manayunk and Conshohocken to the bustling downtown of Philadelphia. Sure, we all know about the history and the artery-attacking sandwiches, but Philadelphia is a city that will take all four years of college (and then some) to discover. There is no such thing as a typical week. You might discover a new unsigned band at Johnny Brenda’s in Fishtown on a Tuesday. Hit a Phillies game on Wednesday. Hone your bowling and Big Lebowski quotes at North Bowl lanes on Thursday. Gallery hop in Old City on First Friday. Discover what bibimbap is at a Korean restaurant on Saturday. What advice would you offer a future Chestnut Hill College student? CHC has what so many larger schools lack: accessibility. You have brilliant minds down the hall with open doors and chairs. Embrace it. As a freshman I proposed the College start a “Muggle” version of Quidditch, and two years later I was talking about it on ESPN. The best part about the smallness of CHC is that it can be as big as you want.
