Learning Advantages at CHC?

Name: Allison Eberly Graduation Year: 2014 Major: Chemistry and Molecular Biology “What internships have you participated in while at Chestnut Hill College?”

Why Study Biochemistry, Chemistry or Forensic Chemistry at CHC? A major in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Forensic Chemistry provides a strong foundation in the sciences, which allows for a wide variety of career choices. Classroom learning at Chestnut Hill College is supported by practical lab experiences. Advanced courses allow for individual student laboratory projects; these projects provide direct preparation for internships, future jobs, and presenting research results at conferences.

“For the past two summers I’ve interned with the NSF-REU program (National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates). I worked 40 hours a week in a biochemistry lab at Boise State University. The research in the lab I worked in focused on looking at new antibiotic targets since current antibiotics are becoming less effective at curing infections. The past two summers have been the greatest experiences of my life. Being able to work in an academic lab, meet so many new people, network at conferences, and travel across the country have been wonderful opportunities.”

The Chemistry department ensures that students gain important hands-on experiences with chemistry techniques and instrumentation. Many colleges no longer offer this laboratory approach because of the increasing cost of laboratory supplies. At larger universities, students often submit samples to an analysis facility and are not permitted to use the analytical instrumentation directly. CHC students are often better prepared for internships and jobs in the chemistry field because of their experiences at CHC.
