AURORA CAMACHO DE SCHMIDT, PH.D. Those graduating today have chosen a field wherein her or his hope is to both have a wonderful career and help people in some way. Some of you will assist others by teaching or providing psychotherapy. Each person who chooses to help others looks for a population to assist. For Dr. Aurora Camacho de Schmidt, professor emerita from Swarthmore College, her academic studies in philosophy, as well as Spanish and Latin American literature, evolved into a focus on the intersection of literature and the social struggles in Mexico and Central America. Dr. Camacho de Schmidt aimed her desire to help immigrant farmworkers. Her good works occurred in the streets, in the board rooms, and through her writings. She was a member of the Quaker American Friends Service Committee. She served as a board member of JUNTOS, a Philadelphia-based, immigrant-led advocacy group. Participating in the activities of the New Sanctuary Movement, Dr. Camacho de Schmidt has worked to assist those in need, joined protests, and provided interpretations for union negotiations. Throughout her career, Dr. Camacho de Schmidt has found ways to use both the power of poetry and the power of protest to assist the chronically underserved and oppressed. In some cases, one may be both professionally accomplished and driven to do good work. Such a woman joins us here today. Chestnut Hill College is pleased to welcome commencement speaker, Dr. Aurora Camacho de Schmidt.

PATRICIA MAY AGGER ’63 AND JAMES H. AGGER, J.D.* British novelist J.K. Rowling once said, “Destiny is a name often given in retrospect to choices that had dramatic consequences.” I believe this quote defines the lives of alumna Patricia “Pat” May and James “Jim” H. Agger, J.D. These two remarkable individuals have given both their time and their treasure to numerous organizations, especially to Chestnut Hill College. Jim graduated from Saint Joseph’s University in 1958 and earned a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1961. After graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s office, rising to the rank of captain. After serving as a JAG attorney, Jim joined Air Products Corporation. Jim climbed the corporate ranks at Air Products Corporation, ascending from staff attorney to senior vice president and general counsel. Jim continued to serve in leadership roles on many civic and charitable organizations, including his alma mater. In 1999, Jim chaired the most successful fundraising campaign in the 20-year history of Penn’s Institute for Law and Economics. Sadly, we lost Jim in February of 2018; however, the spirit of his service, generosity, and leadership continues as an inspiration to countless others, including his wife, Pat, of 50 years. After graduating from Chestnut Hill College in 1963, Pat taught for many years in the School District of Philadelphia and at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Pat was a member of the College’s Board of Directors from 2011 to 2016, serving as a member of the Membership, Enrollment Management, and Development committees and as chair of the Development Committee in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Pat was inducted into the prestigious Libris Society, which recognizes those alumni who have distinguished themselves in their personal and professional lives while exemplifying the College values of faith, charity and knowledge. Pat has repeatedly demonstrated her unwavering loyalty, generosity, and commitment to the College. For example, Pat has been a loyal donor to the Griffin Fund every year for the past three decades. Never shying away from a challenge, Pat played an instrumental role in supporting the renovation of Clement Hall by contacting Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf to enlist his support of the College’s application for redevelopment assistance. The fruits of Pat’s efforts were evident as our newly renovated Clement Hall opened in the fall of 2018! Today, we are pleased and proud to recognize the achievements of James H. Agger, J.D. and Patricia May Agger ’63, leaders, innovators, and public servants, by conferring upon them the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Chestnut Hill College. *The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws is awarded posthumously to James H. Agger, J.D.

ANNE M. AND JAMES P. GALLAGHER, PH.D. Work-life balance is elusive, but it’s easier if you are part of a winning team. Anne M. and James P. Gallagher, Ph.D., are a testament to this fact. Jim’s high-profile career as a nationally-recognized educational administrator and leader made many demands on them as a couple and a family. He was supported every step of the way by Anne, who complemented him brilliantly at work, fulfilling the demanding role of a college president’s spouse, and also at home, where together they raised their four children. Jim celebrates the fact that their achievements are all shared achievements. A passionate learner, Anne earned her bachelor’s degree in math from Duquesne University in 1968, and later she earned two master’s degrees—one from St. Joseph’s University and one from Philadelphia University. Her spirit for service was united with a love of learning when she served as a member of the Board of Directors at Holy Family University and received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the institution in May 2012. Jim’s career is characterized by fearless, thoughtful leadership and distinguished by his sense of service. When Jim was appointed president of Philadelphia University in 1984, not only was he one of the nation’s youngest college presidents, he also was assuming the role at a transitional moment for the institution. Jim successfully shepherded the school through the major transformation from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science to Philadelphia University. On the occasion of his retirement in 2007, which incidentally made him one of the longest-serving university presidents in the country, the Philadelphia University Press reported that Jim’s response to the challenges of that turning-point moment was “to roll up his sleeves and kick-start” the university. Jim’s commitment to educational leadership and student advocacy has been a consistent feature of his working life. He served as the first lay president of Mount Aloysius College from 1977 to1981 and, prior to that, in senior administrative roles at a variety of other institutions, including Georgetown University. And he can’t seem to stay out of the game: In his “retirement,” Jim has served as the interim president of both Arcadia University and La Salle University. Always ready for any good work, Jim has been a critical member of numerous civic and educational organizations, including the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and the Association of Independent College and University Presidents of Pennsylvania. Currently, he serves as a trustee of the Connelly Foundation, an organization that places philanthropic emphasis in the area of Catholic education. Jim and Anne are our near and dear neighbors—they live in Chestnut Hill—and they have embraced the College and our students with their characteristic generosity and sense of service. In addition to hosting events for College alumni and friends and assisting with fundraising, Jim and Anne have also been supportive of the College’s Annual Scholarship Gala, establishing in 2017 the James P. and Anne M. Gallagher Endowed Scholarship. One of the greatest outcomes of this activity, the Gallaghers believe, is to have the opportunity to support the students of CHC, a talented group of energetic, gifted men and women who they believe will graduate and go on to play a dynamic role in whatever career they choose. Today, it is with great admiration that we acknowledge treasured friends of the College, Anne M. Gallagher and James P. Gallagher, Ph.D. by conferring upon them the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Chestnut Hill College.

EVA MOZES KOR Eva Mozes Kor is a survivor of the Holocaust and an advocate of forgiveness. Eva was born in Portz, Romania. Her father and mother, Alexander and Jaffa, had four girls, Edit, Aliz, and twins Miriam and Eva. When Eva was six years old, the Mozes family was packed into a cattle car and transported to the Auschwitz death camp. After 70 hours without food or water, Eva and her family emerged onto the selection platform at Auschwitz. Eva believes no other strip of land in the world has seen so many families ripped apart. Eva soon realized her father and two older sisters were gone. Soon after, the twins were taken from their mother. They never saw any of them again. Eva and Miriam became part of a group of twins used as human guinea pigs in genetic experiments under the direction of Dr. Josef Mengele. At one point, Eva became deathly ill, but, through sheer determination, she stayed alive and helped Miriam survive. Fifty years after the liberation of Auschwitz, Eva returned to the site and stood where so many were tragically murdered. Eva surprised those present when she freed herself from her status as a victim and announced to the world that, in her name alone, she forgave the Nazis. Offering forgiveness lifted a weight from Eva’s shoulders, giving her peace and strength. In 1995, Eva opened a museum in Terre Haute, Indiana, her home since 1960.Thousands of people, many school-aged children, have visited CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center since then. Eva is also tireless in her willingness to travel nationally and internationally, spreading her message of forgiveness. In 2007, Eva worked with state legislators Clyde Kersey and Tim Skinner to gain passage of an Indiana law requiring Holocaust education in secondary schools. For many years, Eva has accompanied large groups to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps, affording them the unique privilege of hearing commentary from a survivor. Eva’s many honors include the Anne Frank: Change the World Award; Indiana’s Sachem Award; the Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit of Justice Award; and the Forgiveness Hero Award. Eva also thoroughly enjoyed serving as grand marshal for the Indianapolis 500 in 2017. Today, it is with great admiration and joy that we recognize the accomplishments of Eva Mozes Kor, Holocaust survivor and advocate for forgiveness, by conferring upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Chestnut Hill College.

FARAH JIMENEZ, J.D. When former President George H.W. Bush used the slogan “a thousand points of light,” he was encouraging citizens to be a guiding light for others. Farah Jimenez, J.D. has answered that call her entire life. For the children and community of Philadelphia, Farah isn’t just a point of light—she is a beacon. Farah’s deep commitment to helping others took root at the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in European history with a minor in urban studies before graduating from Penn’s Law School. Farah has spent more than 20 years as a leader in the nonprofit sector, serving as president and CEO of the Philadelphia Education Fund since April 2016. She has been at the forefront of the effort to ensure that young people in Philadelphia have access to high-quality education to prepare them to succeed in college and in their careers. The fund founded the Early Warning Systems, a nationally recognized, evidence-based student drop-out prevention tool, developed jointly with Johns Hopkins University. A trustee at La Salle University, Farah also served from 2014 to 2018 on the School Reform Commission, the governing body of the School District of Philadelphia. The commission is responsible for the stewardship of a $2.6 billion budget, serving more than 200,000 students in the district and 80 charter schools. She has served in executive management roles in agencies engaged in community revitalization, affordable housing development, and social services. This includes serving as executive director of Mt. Airy USA and president and CEO of the People’s Emergency Center, Pennsylvania’s oldest and most comprehensive social services and community development agency in West Philadelphia. Farah, who has been described as a woman with quiet determination who knows how to get things done, was a gubernatorial appointee to the Pennsylvania Commission on Women and the Pennsylvania Homeless Education Task Force. She is a board member of the United Way and is the founder of the Visiting Scholar’s Program, which conducts research to inform policy affecting vulnerable families. She is currently on the editorial board of Al Dia, Philadelphia’s Spanish-language newspaper. Farah also writes a column for The Philadelphia Inquirer and is a regular panelist on WPVI’s “Inside Story.” Today, it is with great respect that we recognize the achievements of Farah Jimenez, J.D., a woman who has challenged conventional thinking and who has been a catalyst for positive change, by conferring upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Chestnut Hill College.

THE COMMENCEMENT PROCESSION The Chestnut Hill College Commencement procession is lead by the Grand Marshal who carries the College mace. The Grand Marshal is the highest ranking, tenured faculty member. The mace is a symbol of authority and indicates that the activity is an official function of Chestnut Hill College. The predominant feature of Chestnut Hill College’s mace is the College Seal. The mace was presented to the College by the Class of 1956. A color guard follows the Grand Marshal. Following the Grand Marshall in the procession are the degree candidates from the School of Undergraduate Studies. The School of Continuing and Professional Studies degree candidates follow next in the procession. Candidates for master’s degrees from the School of Graduate Studies follow and candidates for the doctoral degree in clinical psychology are the last degree candidates in the procession. The faculty follows the candidates for advanced degrees. The platform party, composed of speakers, honorees, Board of Directors, and the Administration are last to process. The recessional exits in reverse order.

ACADEMIC ROBES AND REGALIA The pageantry and color of an academic convocation such as today’s Commencement come to us from medieval times when academic robes and regalia were adapted from ecclesiastical garb. Most robes are black to symbolize the democracy of scholarship, since they cover any dress or rank of social standing worn beneath. Robes vary in design depending on the degree received. It may be that the wearing of the long gowns provided warmth for the students and teachers who labored in unheated academic buildings of 13th century England. The hood, originally a simple cowl attached to the gown, bears the heaviest symbolism of the academic costume. Its lining displays the colors of the college or university which is granting the degree, and the color of the bordering velvet indicates the field of learning in which the degree is earned. The square cap or mortarboard originated in the 13th century at the University of Paris and came to England in Tudor times. Through the years, European institutions had a great diversity in their specifications of academic dress. American colleges and universities opted for a definite system that all might follow. In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission met at Columbia University and adopted a code of academic dress. The Commission has updated the code in 1932, 1959 and 1986.

BACHELOR’S REGALIA The gown for the bachelor’s degree is untrimmed. It can be identified by its long pointed sleeves. The gown is usually black in-color and is designed to be worn closed. The hood must be three-feet in length. It is lined with the official colors of the college. The Chestnut Hill College lining is scarlet, white and gold. Chestnut Hill grants Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Music degrees. The edging of the Bachelor of Arts hood is white, the Bachelor of Science hood is golden yellow and the Bachelor of Music is pink. The velvet edging is two-inches wide. The mortarboard has a tassel attached at midpoint to the top of the cap. The tassel, like the mortarboard, is black. Traditionally, the graduates move the tassel from the right side to the left side of the cap once the degree is granted.

MASTER’S REGALIA The gown for the master’s degree is designed to be worn either open or closed. The sleeves are oblong and are open at the wrist. The rear part of the sleeve is square cut while the front has an arc cut away. The gown is usually black and untrimmed. The hood for the master’s degree is three-and-one-half-feet long. The edging is three-inches wide. The Chestnut Hill hood is lined in scarlet, white and gold. The white trim signifies the Master of Arts degree, yellow trim signifies a Master of Science degree and light blue trim signifies a Master of Education degree. The mortarboard is black and has a black tassel attached midpoint on the top of the cap. The graduate moves the tassel from the right to the left side of the cap once the degree is granted. 27

DOCTORAL REGALIA The gown for the doctoral degree has bell shaped sleeves. It is designed to be worn either open or closed. The front of the gown is faced with velvet and three bars or chevrons of velvet are used across the sleeves. The color of the velvet trim may be black or match the edging of the hood. The gown may be black or a color approved for an institution. The hood is four-feet long and has panels at the sides. It is lined with the colors of the degree granting institution and edged with velvet colored to represent the specific discipline in which the degree is granted. The velvet edge is five-inches wide. The cap may be the traditional mortarboard cap or a tam made of soft velvet. The tam may be square, six-pointed or eight-pointed. The tassel may be gold. Chestnut Hill College doctoral candidates wear a scarlet gown trimmed in black velvet. The gown is designed to be worn closed.The College Seal is located at the top of each velvet panel on the front of the gown. The hood is lined in scarlet, white, and gold with a white trim to signify the degree in psychology. The cap is an eight-pointed, black velvet tam with a gold tassel.

PRESIDENTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S CHAIN OF OFFICE The President of Chestnut Hill College wears a chain of office at formal College functions. The central medallion in the chain is the official insignia for the President of the College. The chain connects twelve, smaller medallions adorned with fleur-de-lis to symbolize the connection to the founding of the Sisters of Saint Joseph in LePuy, France. The twelve medallions also represent our past and future sister presidents. A large hammered fleur-de-lis at the back balances the College Seal in the front.The chain was a gift from the Chestnut Hill College Alumni Association to Sister Carol Jean Vale on the occasion of her inauguration.

SERVICE MEDALLIONS Fleur-de-lis medallions are worn by faculty and staff who have completed twenty or more years of full-time service to the College. The medallions are worn at official College functions.

HISTORY OF CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE Located at the northwestern edge of Philadelphia on 75 acres overlooking the Wissahickon Creek, Chestnut Hill College opened in 1924 as a Catholic, four-year, liberal arts college for women. Founded as Mount Saint Joseph College by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the College was renamed in 1938 as Chestnut Hill College. Since its inception, the College has offered a rigorous liberal arts education that provides students with a broad background in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The goal of Chestnut Hill College has been to prepare students for life’s challenges by helping them to grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. In keeping with the spirit of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, the curriculum has been modified over time to meet the ever-changing needs of higher education and society. The College originally awarded only the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees to young women of traditional college age. In 1972, a Continuing Education department extended opportunities for undergraduate study to mature women and men. With the addition of a coeducational graduate program in 1980, the College began to offer master’s degrees and, in 1997, added its first doctoral program. Today, students may earn master’s degrees in four disciplines and a doctorate in clinical psychology. Academic changes also included expansion beyond the physical limits of the campus. As a member of SEPCHE (Southeastern Pennsylvania Consortium for Higher Education), Chestnut Hill pursues a collaborative approach to higher education with seven other local institutions. Through membership in the ACSSJ (Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph) Chestnut Hill is able to offer its students opportunities to enrich their educational experiences by studying at seven other colleges in the United States. Study-abroad programs further extend the reach of a Chestnut Hill education and help prepare students for life in a global society. November 2001 proved to be an historic time for Chestnut Hill College. The announcement that men would be admitted to the traditional-age, full-time undergraduate program in fall 2003 marked the end of the 78-year-old College for Women. In choosing to pursue this new direction, the College makes a tradition of excellence and a history of success available to a wider audience. On August 2, 2006, College President Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D. announced one of the most transformational moments in the College’s history, the acquisition of the SugarLoaf estate from the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation. The purchase of SugarLoaf Hill offered the College a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to nearly double the size of its campus and allow for expansion to accommodate a growing student body. The existing structures at SugarLoaf have all been renovated and are currently being used as classroom space, lodging for undergraduate students and for conferences and social events. In the long-term, the property will be expanded to include additional residential and academic buildings in accordance with the College’s Master Plan. In August 2007, College President Carol Jean Vale, SSJ, Ph.D., announced the College’s reclassification from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II and full membership in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Chestnut Hill College, a member of the NCAA Division III since 1996, has enjoyed unprecedented success in its athletics program since going coed in 2003. The Chestnut Hill campus provides an atmosphere conducive to teaching, learning, and reflection for the entire college community. The decades of expansion in academic programs were matched by corresponding growth and change in the campus, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For many years the main buildings were St. Joseph Hall, with its six-story Greco-Roman rotunda and French Gothic exterior, Fournier Hall, a jewel of Italian Romanesque architecture, and Clement Hall, with its classrooms and swimming pool. The additions of Logue Library, Fontbonne Hall, and Barbara D’Iorio Martino Hall meet the needs of a growing college community. In the fall of 2006, Mary Jackson Fitzsimmons ’35 Hall opened as a residence hall to help alleviate a housing shortage on the campus. In 2012, the Jack and Rosemary Murphy Gulati ’61 Complex was dedicated. This renovated Clement Hall space now includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, a sleek entrance pavilion and the inviting Michael and Margaret Carney McCaffery ’77 Lounge (formerly the Social Room). Each new structure was carefully designed to preserve the architectural integrity of the campus while addressing specific educational or student life needs. The last decade has seen an emphasis on providing the technology that is essential to today’s students. Renovated science facilities and computer laboratories helped to create a teaching/learning environment appropriate for the 21st century. Martino Hall includes “smart” classrooms and seminar rooms that are part of the campus-wide network. Visitors to the grounds have long enjoyed the grotto with its charming fountain, the House of Loretto, and the elegant main chapel that was inspired by Sainte Chapelle in Paris. More than 11,000 individuals have earned degrees from Chestnut Hill College since 1924. The list of accomplished graduates includes numerous representatives in medicine, law, research, education, business and social service workers. Alumni are also well known for their commitment to volunteerism in countless civic, cultural, educational, and religious organizations. Their spirit continues to animate the campus through the generous support of and dedication to their alma mater that they loyally demonstrate. Faithful to its rich history, Chestnut Hill College will continue to meet the challenges of a changing society while maintaining its commitment to values-oriented education and its Catholic heritage. Future graduates of the College will continue to be people who use their education to transform the world as they join their predecessors in dedicating themselves to the College motto of Fides, Caritas, Scientia.
