Choose a Sixth Form College

We are proud of our success in ensuring ALL students achieve their potential. High achievers will thrive in our challenging environment, but we encourage young people with all levels of prior attainment to enrol. Like all Sixth Form Colleges we are part of an elite, but we’re not elitist; and the fact that our results are so good reflects the fact that all our learners are stretched and supported to become high achievers. Sixth Form Colleges are experts in 16 to 18 education and act as a valuable stepping stone between the worlds of compulsory education and higher education and employment. The Pastoral Care is specialised for the 16 to 18 age group and the progression rates to university are excellent. A 2011 report conducted by the National Audit Office concluded that Sixth Form Colleges ‘perform best on most measures of learner achievement’. The report showed that: • Learners in Sixth Form Colleges recorded higher attainment in Level 3 courses than those in school and academy sixth forms or general further education colleges. • According to the value added score (which measures the progress that learners make relative to their prior attainment), 58% of Sixth Form Colleges added more value than expected, compared to 29% of general further education colleges and 16% of school and academy sixth forms. • At qualification Levels 1 to 3, Sixth Form Colleges had higher success rates than general further education colleges (84% compared to 78%). Course information 3 pathways to success Our courses fall under 3 broad pathways: A Levels, Vocational Courses and Apprenticeships.

A Levels A Levels have a more traditional and academic focus and are ideal if you want to keep your university and career options open. The AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Level bridges the gap between GCSE and A Level and you will normally study 4 AS Level subjects in the first year and continue with 3 of these in the second year at A (Advanced) Level. In some circumstances it is possible to continue with 4 subjects in the second year. There are 25 A Level subjects to choose from including many of those you enjoyed at school as well as a wide range of exciting new ones. As a specialist Sixth Form College there are very few timetable restrictions so you can choose almost any combination of subjects. However, it is sensible to select an A Level combination that matches your 17 | Cheadle Sixth Form College | Prospectus 2013/14

ability, interests and university or career ambitions. Indeed, in some cases universities require specific subjects for certain degree courses eg Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry. We will discuss this with you in detail at your interview and will continue to provide you with professional careers advice should you decide to change your choice of subjects prior to enrolment. An A Level programme is particularly challenging and some subjects have special entry requirements. Where applicable these are indicated in the A-Z of A Level subjects starting on page 21.

Vocational Courses Vocational courses are offered at different levels in order to suit your ability and ambition. Although they are generally a stand alone qualification they can be successfully combined with AS/A Levels and lead directly to university and employment. Vocational courses should be your first choice if you prefer practical work and coursework assessments. The two year Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A

The BTEC First Diploma is a one year Level 2 course equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade A-C. Additional courses and opportunities are offered and you will be encouraged to progress to one of our Level 3 courses. The Foundation Learning Programme at Level 1 is a practical one year course which gives you the personal skills, knowledge and understanding you need to succeed in a particular job.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships offer you the best of both worlds – the opportunity to work and earn a wage whilst gaining valuable qualifications.

Apprenticeships provide the skills you need to develop a career in your chosen area and we are one of the few local training providers who can find you a job. You will achieve a framework of valuable qualifications and develop personal skills that will enhance your career. Additional short courses or industry skills can also be included in your programme and you will be supported by our experienced staff. Apprenticeships are offered at Advanced Level 3 and Intermediate Level 2 – all are linked to national workforce priorities and are available in a variety of areas. There are no formal entry requirements and the level of apprenticeship participation is dependent on your previous experience and your job role. All apprenticeships need to be in paid employment for 30 hours per week. If you do not have a job then we will help you find one.
