STUDENT SUCCESS

BE PART OF OUR SUCCESS STORY Success breeds success, and we are rightly proud of our students’ achievements in all areas of learning – it’s hard work, but the work is balanced by a friendly, adult atmosphere where fun isn’t frowned upon. We are not only preparing you for future learning or a career, but we’re also preparing you to take on the challenges of the modern world. 2012 was another record year of examinations success. Advanced Level students achieved much better than the national average, with 32 A Level subjects achieving a 100% pass rate and Advanced Vocational subjects achieving a 99.6% pass rate making Marple Sixth Form students amongst the most successful in the region. It’s important to note too that our students achieve way beyond the predictons suggested by their prior results. In 2012 over 550 students progressed to universities throughout the UK, including Oxford and Cambridge, while others embarked upon their chosen career pathways. Student success is celebrated at the popular Annual Awards Evening where Subject Awards are presented to students who excel. Special Awards for outstanding achievement are also awarded.

6

At Marple Sixth Form College our sporting reputation is excellent. The College football, lacrosse and golf teams are highly successful and the many individual sporting achievements include regional, national and world champions. While some have gained selection for England or trained for the Olympics, others have gone into the professional ranks or been awarded coveted scholarships. A group of student delegates swept the board at the Model United Nations Conference, receiving 9 recommendations for their diplomatic tactics and skills. Individual success stories include an Apprentice Employee of the Month, Stockport’s Young Volunteer of the Year and the Heinemann & Nursery World Child Care Student of the Year. Students and staff also come together to raise funds for charity in so many different and fun ways. Recent highlights include a leg wax for Children in Need, a ‘Wear it Pink’ day for Breast Cancer and a variety of fun activities for Comic Relief.

REDEVELOPMENT PLANS

TAKING OUR TRADITIONS INTO THE FUTURE Plans are well advanced for the redevelopment of our Buxton Lane site. This redevelopment will bring together all college departments and ensure we provide the very best in resources for our students. The plans include a brand new 6,000 m2 teaching block with purpose built classrooms, fully-equipped Theatre, Dance and Drama Studios, Music Suites, ICT Suites, Specialist Science Labs and Art & Design Workshops. Also included will be a Multi Purpose Sports Hall, and an all-weather 3G playing area. We recognised how well developed social skills can lead to a fuller and more satisfying adult life. We have therefore planned outstanding social areas, which include dedicated, adaptable spaces for individual and group work, quiet areas for reading, reflection and simply chilling, and excellent modern dining facilities with fully equipped food preparation areas. There will be a landscaped arrival plaza, upgraded car parking and a multi-purpose ‘street’ to encourage social learning and host community functions.

MARPLE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE

CHOOSE MARPLE SIXTH FORM COLLEGE There’s one simple fact you should know: Sixth Form Colleges are the highest performing Post 16 providers in a state sector that includes school and academy sixth forms. Learners who come to us are free of the traditional restraints of school. They don’t wear uniforms, they know the staff by their first names and they feel they are in charge of their own destinies. Yes, you’ll be pushed to work hard, but let’s face it, life is hard, and the better you’re equipped for it the better you’ll perform! We are proud of our success in ensuring ALL students achieve their potential. High achievers will thrive in our challenging environment, but we encourage young people with all levels of prior attainment to enrol. Like all Sixth Form Colleges we are part of an elite, but we’re not elitist; and the fact that our results are so good reflects the fact that all our learners are stretched and supported to become high achievers. Sixth Form Colleges are experts in 16 to 18 education and act as a valuable stepping stone between the worlds of compulsory education and higher education and employment. The Pastoral Care is specialised for the 16 to 18 age group and the progression rates to university are excellent. A 2011 report conducted by the National Audit Office concluded that Sixth Form Colleges ‘perform best on most measures of learner achievement’.

10

The report showed that: • Learners in Sixth Form Colleges recorded higher attainment in Level 3 courses than those is school and academy sixth form colleges or general further education colleges. • According to the value added score (which measures the progress that learners make relative to their prior attainment), 58% of Sixth Form Colleges added more value than expected, compared to 29% of general further education colleges and 16% of school academy sixth forms. • At qualification Levels 1 to 3, Sixth Form Colleges had higher success rates than general further education colleges (84% compared to 78%).
