The early black metal scene, the first wave, initially created as "Satanic metal", has often sparked controversy, due to the actions and ideologies associated with the genre. Church burnings and murders? More like fast tempos, a shrieking vocals, distorted guitars lo-fi recordings, and atmosphere. By Y. Chelf Dortlouke
It's probably the most dramatic, violent and obscure representation of contemporary, international, semipopular culture. Some say it is an extremist sect of an extremist sect. Accepting and embracing the irrational and primal; it is a critique of modern rationalism and secularism. A paradox, balancing between individualism that longs to belong. Fundamentally opposing views that somehow co-exist. Stained with uncomfortable concepts, such as misogyny, nationalism, homophobia -but I will not get into those.
There are plenty of spots available in the graveyard of Black Metal theories but sincerity, authenticity and extremity are valued above all else. Along with the fear of selling out which is now, slowly replaced by the fear of not being black metal copy-cats. Trends come and go, believe me. In music too. But there's a devoted presence in the black metal community that I find strangely and strongly warming. Bruising, noisy and unforgiving at the same time.
This piece is about the music. I'm here to talk about that. Maybe aesthetics as well. The rest I condemn.

THORNS I try not to be so inspired by music, I try to make music from ideas, from thoughts, from feelings, from… it’s difficult, from mathematics, from physics, from stuff that happen in nature, natural events. I try to find inspiration in everything, not just music because I think if you just listen to other music it would be too narrow when you want to create something new, I try to find the inspiration somewhere else. Most of the times, I am just trying to materialize a feeling into music."

OLD FUNERAL We came from the small village Lysekloster and it was only 5-6 people into metal music. 4 of us ended up in bands COVENANT Eskil and I have been doing our own thing for so long that it sometimes gets difficult to avoid repeating ourselves.

Blending hard rock, doom and black metal, ACÂRASH is a band that embraces tradition yet manages to forge a sound that is uniquely theirs. It is a sound where esoteric poetry and ritualistic contemplation are central to the music, and mirror the nuances in both sound and musical contrasts. When it comes to Scandinavian black metal we can clearly see the culture and the place incorporated into the music and imagery of each band. Why is that so prevalent in the Scandinavian scene? Is there something in the water?
There’s probably different reasons for that, I suppose. The cultural heritage being one of them, with its honour, its unique imagery and its connection to nature. Speaking of nature, I believe the Scandinavians also have a quite direct contact with nature – even among a lots of urban population – which you don’t always find in other countries. And there’s the huge element of coincidence and characters. When the second wave was formed, it surely didn’t come out of nothing. All the elements was there already – music, visuals, philosophical ideas – it was more a matter of chaining them together in a meaningful way. And that’s probably were the Norwegians and Swedes outdid the others, in belief and dedication. Although metal heads have been quite dedicated and real for a long time, the intense belief and dedication of the Norwegian scene in the early and mid nineties was another level. Even if the total lack of irony was quite funny as well, it also made for a tight knit community with effective rules and codes of honour.

ONE THING I'VE LEARNED while working on this special issue is that opinions and mindsets vary to a vast degree even within the same genre and community. And that I love Michael Denner. Never have I met such a grounded, genial and good-natured artist in my career. He set the bar so high that I don't even know what's the point anymore.

When it comes to Scandinavian black metal we can clearly see the culture and the place incorporated into the music and imagery of each band. Why is that so prevalent in the Scandinavian scene? Is there something in the water? Hahahahaha! Actually, when we started we were one of the very few bands that played that kind of music. The very heavy type of metal, you know? But things developed after that, the black metal scene became bigger. Back then we had no idea what we were doing, we just wanted to play. When the band Venom came out suddenly we had a new genre. We didn’t associate with the bands that came afterwards. So, it just happened for us. And some other bands then, carried it on. More satanic and more brutal. For us, we were just 3 guys with the same idea of what to do with the band. We wanted to make it the heaviest band in the world. I do feel that we were able to create what we had in mind. And of course Kind Diamond with his satanic lyrics, in my book he was the first of the kind. A lot of Scandinavian bands followed in the years to come, after that. But I do think we were the first ones in Scandinavia and its surroundings that took it to that point.

The thing is, it’s important to cross boundaries, to be able to do what you feel, and not put labels to the kind of music you are playing. Just do what you feel and things will come to you, that’s what we did back then. If you wanna call yourself black metal or death metal, and stick to the formula because you know this what your fans expect, it’s fine by me.
But I’m too eager to try new things. I can’t just stay in one position, there are no limits. That is the way I work. I can only speak for myself.

If you had a magic wand and could define the future of black metal, what would be your ideal vision? I would hope to develop it. To take the genre to the next lever and experience new things. That’s the interesting part for me.
My son is 23 years old he is deeply into black metal and death metal. So every day he comes up with new ideas, he plays them for me and I am unable to follow, that’s very educational.
Even though I’m personally more of a heavy metal guy in general, my son helps me out, he lays out these interesting things for me, and that’s allows me to be able to dig deep in the genres and its super cool.

Seriously though, one’s heart and soul should be reflected in music, otherwise it serves no purpose as a form of art and creation. Odds are the surrounding cold nature has its influence more than not.

The only thing I keep an eye on is that each song is foremost a full piece in itself without added instruments and works to its full extent as metal. Many artists using keyboards and such tend to forget this and if you strip the song down to it’s core element there’s nothing of interest left.
For us it’s always been as minimalist as possible but lo-fi sound is a choice of presentation yet often seems counter-productive, especially these days, and has its time and place.
When that becomes the sole aim in one’s black metal it often falls into a pile of unlistenable garbage. Mind you, Sargeist has many releases that can be pinned under the so-called lo-fi style yet has never been the sole aim of it.
Lo-fi for the sake of being “purist” is just that, serves no other purpose than to glorify yourself in your own bubble and jerk-off circles.

It is as much music as it is religious zealotry and practice. Opposing every mandate of life-loving religion comes hand in hand with the love for death and beyond.

Either that or being such a miserable twat nobody wants to play with you. Any band that does not intend to perform live has no need for a full line-up and if you can, why not do it all by yourself. Sadly many use this as an excuse to record and publish music as valuable as toilet noise.
Do you think that appearance is a key factor when it comes to black metal? We got a very specific dress code, corpse paint and so on, so how crucial are all these in black metal? None of it has relevance on a wider scale. If I started a new band today I most likely would drop the whole corpse-paint tradition. It has been done to a point of being normalized and accepted, instead of being something ugly and morbid as it has been three decades ago. Also, dress code? I couldn’t care less. Your music, lyrical content and their relevance are the first that should speak louder than any visual output ever should.
If you had a magic wand and could define the future of black metal, what would be your ideal vision? All dead or filled with religious zealotry. There’s no middle ground, no musicians doing music but all singing praising gospels for the Lord.
