2018 Product of the Year! Meet the game-changer in infant & toddler comfort Sleepyhead® has been designed to create a soothing environment for babies. FACILI TATE S TU MMY TI M E Tummy time can help babies develop neck strength and motor skills when they are awake and ready to play.

TR AVE L A NY WH E R E WI TH BA BY An ideal travel companion for parents with babies and toddlers, as it maintains familiarity in a new environment.

MU LT IFU N C T ION AL Resting, bonding, playing, nursing and changing all in one. Ultra-portable, can be used in any room of the house.

T I P S F O R B E D S H A R I N G FA M I L I E S If you choose to use a dock while bed sharing, consult with your pediatrician, and be sure to follow the precautions we share on sleepyheadofsweden.com, including: 1. Never allow baby to co-sleep with an adult who suffers sleep disorders, are under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication, or is obese. Ensure that each adult in the bed are aware of the baby’s presence.

2. Carefully prepare the bed: Place the pod on a firm mattress only. Be sure it lays flat and remains flat with adult(s) in the bed.

Make sure there are no extra pillows on the bed that can go over the baby while in the pod. Pillows and covers present a suffocation risk to your baby.

Position pod in center of bed, near headboard. Each side of the pod should be at least 12 inches from edge of bed.

Make sure there are no covers (including blankets, sheets, pillowcases, shams, comforters, and other bedding) over the pod.

3. To reduce risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, only place baby on back in the pod. 4. Never leave baby alone in adult bed.

If you’re yearning for a good chortle, I urge you to turn to Becky Dickinson’s baby-naming feature on page 82. The (previously) unwritten rules and regulations around choosing the right name for your baby are widely known, so this will offer up some light entertainment. If you do happen to be spending this Christmas weighed down by precious cargo, you may be feeling somewhat stifled by all the yuletide cheer. On page 101, our favourite duo Marina Fogle and Chiara Hunt share their tips on keeping calm through the chaos, and how to use this busy season to your advantage. And just because you’re sporting a bump doesn’t have to mean frumpy jumpers and baggy trousers. Head to page 72 for a maternity fashion fix. Lastly, this issue wouldn’t be complete without a jam-packed gift guide. We’ve got baby’s first Christmas all wrapped up starting on page 64. Merry Christmas, one and all!

KEE

Cotton dress £40, beatriceandbee.com

I always love working on a Christmas issue – not just because of all the treats that get sent into the office – but because it’s the ideal time to reminisce about times gone by. It’s always been a big day in the Moore household. And as our family continues to grow in size, it’s wonderful to reignite the magic with little ones. My dad still insists on employing his ‘exclusion zone’ around the Christmas tree meaning no presents can be touched until the big day, or at least not while he’s looking. So as countdown officially commences, you’ll find festive fun on every page this issue. As party season kicks off in earnest, celebrations are in full swing at Baby HQ. We’re still on a high from our fourth annual Little London Awards. This year, the ceremony was held at the elegant Home House in Marylebone, where we were joined by friends and nominees. Champagne was sipped, canapés devoured, and proud award winners congratulated! A huge well done to those who won, but also a big thank you to our fabulous judges and those who entered. Check out page 40 to read all about it! Christmas is all about laughter and joy. And

Rockit fits any pram or pushchair and gently rocks to soothe your baby to sleep, and keeps them asleep when the stroller stops moving. With your baby content by your side, you can enjoy a coffee in peace or manage the supermarket checkout with both hands. You can also avoid those late-night walks around the block to get your little one to drift off. Scientific tests show that the motion closely mimics the gentle hand rocking of a pram and the soothing movement is gentler than a pushchair moving over paving stones. Georgia and Danny would like a brother or sister for Cooper, but not any time soon!

MY ESSENTIALS GEORGIA JONES

Cooper will be one in January – has motherhood been everything you thought it’d be? I think it’s been a little bit harder than I was expecting – I didn’t think it was going to be an easy ride by any means, but I didn’t realise there was so much emotion involved. You’re told that you’re not going to have much sleep, that they cry a lot and poo a lot, but I don’t think anyone ever told me that I might feel down or out of my depth – that was quite a shock for me.

The model and presenter discusses her t yea o ot e oo on on l ng an o le t e a al pregnancy which I think kept me mentally and physically healthy. Would you and Danny like to have more children? We do want more, but it’s not on the cards any time soon! I think once you have one you realise

Did you enjoy your pregnancy? I absolutely loved being pregnant. I Cotton leggings enjoyed having £15, babymori.com a bump and feeling him kicking inside me. After the first 12 weeks I just felt normal, and I kept fit during my

that this is hard work! I’d love a little brother or sister for Cooper because I’m sure he’d be a very good big brother, but not just yet. You’re from Yorkshire – do you go back often to see family? We try to go back quite a bit actually – if our family aren’t coming down to see us we’re often travelling back up north. It’s just so nice for Cooper to be out in the countryside as well, it’s always so nice and relaxing. When you’re there, you can’t do any housework so it helps to fully switch off, as opposed to when family come to visit

you and it’s still very easy to be tidying up while they’re there. It’s definitely the relaxation we need. Do you think you’d ever move away from London? We often have this chat because we’d like to move more into the countryside, but we just don’t think we could go back up north. First of all, work wise, we both need to be based in London. We really love where we are now because we’re not too in the thick of it – we’ve got that right balance and I think it’d be hard for us to leave now. When it comes to dressing Cooper, what are your go-to babywear shops? Gap is amazing – it always has sales on which is just brilliant, and I constantly get emails with 40 per cent off. I love Baby Mori too, and Mamas & Papas have got a really gorgeous autumn/winter range right now.

Cooper’s personalised toy chest is great for keeping the nursery tidy

What about when it comes to his nursery – what does that look like? Do you have any favourite interiors brands? We didn’t know if Cooper was going to be a boy or girl, so we kept his nursery quite neutral – it’s all greys and turquoises and white with little splashes of colour. We’re really into Scandinavian-style furniture and accessories so we got some lovely stuff from Scandibørn, as well as pieces with Cooper’s name on from My 1st Years, including a toy chest which is great for hiding away all the non-Scandi toys!

selective [with work] because my friends and family always remind me that I’d still be on maternity leave if I had a nine-to-five job. I actually went back to work two weeks after having Cooper with a photoshoot; it’s lovely that I can pick and choose what I want to do with my job, but I didn’t ease myself in gently, which was probably a bit of a mistake. Listen to your mind and your body and if you’re tired, take a break. What do you do for date nights? We love our food, so dinner and a good bottle of wine somewhere is perfect. We also love a pamper,

How do you achieve a work-life balance as a mother? If it all gets too much I’ll slow it down. In the past I’ve been known to work really hard and grind myself into the ground, but when you’ve got a baby to think about you can’t really do that. I’m being

so we’ll go to the House of Elemis in Mayfair and have a nice facial. Danny is a very metrosexual man!

Describe a typical weekend. We’ll often take Cooper to soft play or to the park which he loves – there’s a big swing at the one near us that both Danny and Cooper can sit on. We might have to do a bit of work, but then we’ll try and pop to a friend’s place and have a takeaway while the babies sleep. And then, because we’ve usually been non-stop for the whole week, we’ll have a really chilled Sunday – our day of rest.

And if you’ve got some time totally to yourself, what do you get up to? This is going to sound so incredibly boring, but I like to clean. I find it so therapeutic – I’m a massive champion of the ‘clean house, clean mind’ theory. Other than that, I like to have a lovely, long bath totally uninterrupted, because you don’t get many of those once you have a baby!

This will be Cooper’s first Christmas – what are you most excited for? Everyone’s coming to us, so I’m excited to have all our family together for his first Christmas. I’m sure the things we’ll get for him will mostly be garish and flashy and making lots of loud noise, but from what I’ve gathered, babies prefer the boxes and wrapping paper so maybe they can be his present. I’m also looking forward to dressing him up in some novelty outfits – it’s got to be done!

What is it you love about Instagram? In one word – inspiration! I also love the social aspect; there are people I speak to every day, yet we’ve never met because we live in different parts of the world. What are your favourite Instagram accounts? Right now, @allthingsvictoria, @vitamusiyevich, @sensational_seven and @luxmumma. How has life changed welcoming your second child? As one friend told me before: I’m never alone, I always have at least one of them with me! It has changed our rhythm as a family. I always thought I’d only have one child, but I’m so glad Suri and my husband changed my mind. The love between my daughters is so wonderful. Where do you like to shop for Sienna and Suri? My one-stop destination for clothing is Childrensalon,

but I also buy from small independent brands such as Benedita. We usually shop at Harrods or Smyths Toys, and I’m so glad Pottery Barn Kids has just launched in the UK – I’ve been waiting for this since Suri was born! What are your go-to places in London? For family time, our favourite spots are museums; particularly the V&A, Science Museum or National History Museum. We also love parks – especially Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Primrose Hill. You’re originally from Portugal. What do you miss most about home? Family and friends are the main reason we go back. Apart from that, I’d say the beach and the light. Portugal’s a beautiful country with friendly people, amazing food and beautiful, diverse places to visit.

eeting Santa Claus for the very first time is one of life’s big landmark moments. He’s a very busy chap, but thankfully he has a number of working grottos to base himself throughout the UK over the festive period, each boasting a slightly different environment – from toy shops to hay barns to safari parks. One thing all of these places have in common is presents, elves and good cheer. Here is our roundup of the best grottos to visit with your little one this Christmas.

WHAT’S ON Experience the after-dark magic of Knowsley Safari Park’s animal light sculptures

Bocketts Farm SURREY All aboard the Santa Express! This is how children will be transported to a magical festive workshop within a traditional hay barn at Bocketts Farm (adults can walk alongside the trailer, which moves slowly). The barn is set to be home to gorgeous newborn lambs, a craft corner where cards can be made and letters to Santa can be composed – and there’s also a giant snow globe for a guaranteed white Christmas. But best of all is the main man himself, who meets each child in his festive grotto, talks about what they would like for Christmas and gives them an early present. A heartwarming start to the holidays. 22 November to 24 December. From £5. bockettsfarm.co.uk

Knowsley Safari Park LIVERPOOL At Liverpool’s Knowsley Safari, Christmas is celebrated after dark, when the animals are asleep but the park is lit up with magical lamps and other wonders. Light sculptures in the shape of much-loved creatures, enchanting street performers and fairground rides all contribute the festive feel. But it is of course the grotto, where Father Christmas awaits with a sack full of presents, which is, of course, the main event. Excited elves will greet excited visitors and guide them to the fireside. 23 November to 23 December; adults £5, children £14, under threes go free. knowsleysafariexperience.co.uk

Hamleys LONDON Hamleys first opened its doors in 1760 – and has since brought untold joy to generations of children and adults alike. It would be more than fitting to meet Santa Claus in the world’s most famous toy shop, wouldn’t it? Luckily for plenty of children, the big man will be in Hamleys (there are four locations to choose from: the London flagship store on Regent Street and in Glasgow, Manchester and Essex) along with his elves, this Christmas. Little ones can join in a host of seasonal games and activities before meeting Father Christmas – who has got not just one gift, but a gift bag for every little girl and boy who has been good to take home. Parents beware: they’ll be surrounded by so many toys that you’ll have to seriously up your gifting game! 24 November to 24 December. Prices dependent on location. hamleys.com

Royal Albert Hall LONDON There can be few more glamorous places to meet Father Christmas than at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. Youngsters will be guided through the hall and have the opportunity to have chats with Santa’s friends from the North Pole. Then, everyone will take a seat in the famous sleigh before the man in red comes out to greet the little ones – armed with gifts for all. This interactive grotto visit is ideal for toddlers and older. 22 November to 22 December. £30 per child aged two years+, but accompanying adults go free (max of two per child). royalalberthall.com

Lapland UK ASCOT With thumbs up from the likes of Elton John, Lapland UK really does offer an extraordinaryily comprehensive and detailed experience for youngsters. It starts at home, when the postman delivers a very exciting invitation from Santa, who’s finding himself snowed under with all the letters he has received, and needs a bit of help. Once visitors have reported for duty at Lapland UK in Ascot, they’re drawn into a beautiful snowy world. Log cabins house the elves’ post office and toy-making workshops, while huskies and reindeers can be met and petted. And of course, there’s Santa himself. Lapland UK will delight adults and children of all ages, including small babies. The sensory experiences – the lights, the snow and the music – are in abundance! 17 November to 24 December. From £49.99 per person. laplanduk.co.uk

Eden Project CORNWALL Winter in the UK is always a chilly affair, so it’s no wonder Father Christmas makes a base at the Eden Project in Cornwall – a tropical rainforest housed in enormous domes. All the better for keeping the cold out! Visitors will be able to meet the elves and even see where they sleep after a busy day helping Santa. This is an opportunity for people to see how he prepares for Christmas Eve. Stories are read by the hearth before meeting the man himself, who has a special gift for each and every child. 24 November to 24 December, from £8 for a child with one adult. edenproject.com

Beamish Museum COUNTY DURHAM Venture into the Christmases of yesteryear at Beamish Museum in County Durham. Beamish is a vast, open-air museum, famous for bringing different eras of the past to life in various domestic and civic settings. Visitors will be able to experience festivities as they were back then: Christmas feasts being cooked up in the kitchen of a 1940s farmhouse, festive markets and an Edwardian fairground, complete with galloper rides and classic sideshows are sure to delight, but best of all is Pockerley Waggonway, where Father Christmas and his reindeer are waiting to say hello. All children will receive a small, traditional gift. Beamish Museum offers a truly magical walk through yuletides past. 17 November to 24 December. Prices vary depending on activities. beamish.org.uk

BABY TALK

Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a sucker for personalised pieces. I’ve fallen for these adorable bear socks from My 1st Years. My little one’s going to be wearing the red ones on the 25th. Personalised bear socks (pack of four), £20, my1styears.com

A

lthough my little one is now classed as a toddler, I’m SO excited for new mamas celebrating their baba’s first Christmas! Even though most babies prefer the boxes and wrapping to the thoughtful gift, there’s nothing sweeter than a baby’s first Christmas Day surrounded by family and friends. I can remember my son’s first, he was 11 months old and the three of us sat on our bed surrounded by presents thinking how lucky we were. Stockings are a big deal for me. My mother always made up the best ones for us as kids and I wanted to keep to the same tradition. A pillow case with initials on it, a clementine at the bottom and then wonderful presents wrapped in tissue paper so you can almost see what’s inside! This is something I still do eight years on and it makes me feel rather nostalgic.

I’m crazy about Polar Post, and the very sound of these darling sleigh bells make one feel the magic of Christmas! Magical sleigh bell, £24.95, polarpost.co.uk

WHERE TO GO

Harrods is my first stop for the essence of Christmas. As soon as it opens, I book tickets for the Christmas Grotto which in my opinion, is the best in town. You need to be a member (it’s seriously easy to join) but entry is free. One year we took all of the cousins to see Santa there, which was very special. harrods.com

e’s one of the cheekiest and most charismatic presenters on television, so it makes sense that Declan Donnelly is adapting easily to his new role as devoted father. It all began back in March, when a leading tabloid reported that the charming Geordie and his wife Ali Astall were expecting, with Donnelly confirming the wonderful news himself with a throwback snap from the couple’s 2015 wedding and the caption: “Just wanted to say thank you for all the lovely messages. The news has sneaked out a little earlier than we had hoped but Ali and I are delighted to be expecting our first child.” Then on 1 September, the proud dad took to Twitter once more to announce that baby Isla Elizabeth Anne had been born, just after 9am that morning, stating that both mother and daughter were doing well and that he was already head over heels in love. Since then, the couple have been spotted several times strolling near their home in Chiswick with baby Isla tucked snuggly in her pram, and for the presenter’s 43rd

birthday in September, Donnelly revealed that he had received a card from his threeweek-old daughter, adding jokily: “…she’s very advanced, although her handwriting looks suspiciously like that of the dog (I suspect he wrote it really).” Though currently revelling in the gentle delights of life with a newborn, it’s as Isla grows that Donnelly will come into his own as a father. Already bringing enormous happiness to children – and adults alike – across the country while hosting the likes of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Britain’s Got Talent, the cheery star has a natural affinity with the younger generation. That’s to be expected, perhaps, given the diminutive age at which he and long-term sidekick Ant McPartlin made their career debuts on BBC teen drama Byker Grove – they were just 12 – before the duo climbed up through the ranks of British television and radio, to their current lofty position as surely the powerhouse duo of primetime entertainment. is really everything It’s this illustrious we’ve ever needed.” career that has Wildly successful – contributed to having picked up the Donnelly being gong for Most Popular somewhat of a late TV/Entertainment Dec and Ali have been spotted out and about starter when it Presenter 17 years in a with their newb orn daughter comes to making a row, and with an OBE family of his own, as to his name for services energies have often been focused towards to the industry – you his career, admitting that even after their can detect a sense of relief that Donnelly has enormous success, he still fears it could all be now been able to turn his attentions towards taken away. “Ant and I both came from very family matters. simple, hardworking upbringings, where family “I came from a large family and I know and community values were at the heart of so well what it means to have those close everything we had. As a mother of three, the This Morning presenter Willoughby will likely have plenty of tips for the new father, and given her candid and ongoing broodiness, may be encouraging him to bring more children into the world. Growing up as one of seven in an Irish Catholic family, it’s unlikely that Donnelly will have a brood the size of his own parents’ and has said in the past that he would be happy with two children. “I’m not sure I could ever contemplate having more than a couple of kids. Never say never, but I’m pretty exhausted just with the one, and having a brother or sister for Isla seems perfect.” Perhaps that’s wise; after all, two has proved to be an incredibly lucky number for one of our greatest modern-day showmen.

BABY TALK

y stomach has fallen onto the floor. My heart is thumping out of my chest. Sweat pours from my skin. The unthinkable has happened. I have hurt my child. My sweet little baby, not yet even three months old. In one of my leastsmart decisions, I took the baby nail clippers to her fingers and cut deep into the flesh on her middle finger. I knew I was only supposed to do it when she was sleeping, but she was so calm and contented, gently mewling on her changing mat, and well, her nails had become comedically long. The clippers were sitting right there and I thought I could just… Three fingers in, Noah wrestled out of my grip. Bam. She looked into my eyes with a heart-breaking disbelief in that fleeting moment before the pain is realised. Then came the scream. She screamed until she ran out of air. I paced from our bedroom to hers, her body clutched tightly to my chest and her finger – now streaming ribbons of blood – lodged firmly in my mouth. I’ll have to call an ambulance. She’ll need stitches. How will I explain this to Ed? How will I explain it to Noah, when she grows up and wonders why the tip of her

AF TER EXPERIENCING HER FIRST BOUT OF MUM GUILT, Joanna Ellner’s PROTEC TIVE IN STIN C T KICKS IN middle finger is missing? Then, some 20 minutes later, the bleeding stopped and she fell asleep in my arms. Her tearstained face pink with exhaustion. Only then, as the adrenalin

subsided, I began to cry. Now, believe me I know, on the grand scale of Things That Can Break On A Baby, a fingertip cut isn’t exactly up there. But, in that moment, it felt like Armageddon, and was made so much worse by the fact that I had been its perpetrator. The sight of her blood-splattered vest was so upsetting, I chucked it in the outside bin. Like every little shard of motherhood, there’s a lesson in there. These little babies are fallible. Breakable. Vulnerable to the world and its people, including even – especially – their parents. Life throws us these little cautionary jabs to teach us to do

better. To protect them better. To be more watchful next time, so that something even worse doesn’t happen. When I was sixmonths pregnant and carrying a glass of apple juice, I misjudged my footing on the stairs, flew through the air and landed squarely on my coccyx. From that moment on, I approached each set of stairs with a forensic eye for ergonomics and clung to the handrail for dear life, even when that resulted in a Mexican standoff with another rail-clutcher. An hour later, when Noah awoke, I caught sight of my face in a mirror. The look of fright was still etched across my brows.

It was the same look I saw on the face of my mum when she closed the boot of the car onto my index finger, aged seven, in Plymouth Pavillions car park. She shrieked for help from passersby. I remember so keenly both the incomprehensible pain – the boot had missed my knuckle by a hair’s breadth – but also a prickle of embarrassment, that type that only comes from your mum making a scene in public. At least Noah was spared this additional torment. And of course, now, four days later, her finger is like new again, hurrah for that magichealing baby skin. I however, will take a while longer to recover.

aving previously used the Egg stroller from birth when my now threeyear-old Evie was born, I thought I’d already experienced the crème de la crème of pushchairs. But with a new baby on the way, I was excited to give the Adorra a try. We already have the Maxi-Cosi Pebble car seat, and opted for the Oria carrycot, which can be used across a range of Maxi-Cosi strollers.

GOOD LOOKING? The travel system is attractive and comes in a range of fabrics and chassis shades. We opted for the black chassis with Nomad Black fabric. It’s more of a dark grey, but it looks smart. I love the Sand and Nomad Grey colours, but our choice has been very durable so far, with no marks despite numerous dog walks, park trips and Lake District jaunts.

PRACTICALITY AND DRIVEABILITY The pushchair is easily folded with one hand and fits neatly into my regular-sized boot. We store it in the hallway, where it doesn’t take up too much room, even set up. And the basket is large enough to comfortably fit all the day-trip necessities of a newborn and three-year-old. A really useful feature is how buttons can be pressed one at a time to release the seat or carrycot from the chassis. I can see this being particularly useful once Penny’s in the seat, as I’ll be able to adjust the seat with one hand and have the other hand free to hold her. The seat also reclines in three positions, another The pushchair’s so easy to navigate that Jamie can walk the family labradoodle at the same time!

adjustment that can be done with one hand. The five-point harness system is well thought out, and the bumper bar is covered in the same durable material as the handle. The handle is easy to use and can be adjusted to be the right height for both myself and my husband. The pushchair glides along, and I can easily manoeuvre at the same time as walking our giant labradoodle! The only negative is that the suspension isn’t so good. On dog walks and trips off road we often found Penny wobbling around.

PARENTING

PERSONAL EFFECTS ongratulations, you’re expecting! Now for the big question: what to call your little bundle of chromosomes? Naming your child is probably the most important job you’ll ever do as a parent – until you actually become a parent, that is. But until that first piercing cry, all you really have to do is to decide what to call her – or rather, what not to call her. From the posh to the pretentious, the ridiculous to the revolting, the notorious to the not-another-one, there’s more to naming a child than just getting the spelling right. The first rule of baby naming depends on whether you want your child to be part of the in-crowd or to stand out from the masses. Choosing a popular name has its advantages, especially if you’re someone who likes to fit in. However, while you may love the name Olivia, your daughter may not enjoy being known by both her first name and surname for the duration of her school life. If on the other hand you opt for a moniker like Zartensia, you’ll probably never meet another one in your life. But be prepared for a barrage of queries about whether it’s a ‘madeup name’. (For the record, there’s at least one

C

exercised when simply picking a name from your family tree. Especially if your beloved granny went by the name of Sheila or Jean. No offence. It’s just that while some names seem to slip effortlessly back into society, others remain awkwardly on the fringe. So while the likes of Stanley, Edith and Nancy have a quaint, nostalgic ring to them, the same doesn’t seem to be true for Colin, Rodney and Brenda. And when did you last meet a baby Tracy or Kevin? Possibly not since the early 1980s. There’s a fine line between evergreen monikers and those that seem to have missed the recycling collection. So while Freddie, Evie and Archie have all made a comeback, it’s hard to imagine a playground full of Brians, Pauls and Janets, or a class register that reads: Barbara, Wendy, Wayne and Clive. Talking of inadvisable names, there are some that should come with a warning: Adolf (for obvious reasons) Jesus (especially if you have the surname Christ) and Candida (because who wants to share their name with an intimate itch?) It’s also best to avoid naming your child after an alcoholic beverage. Take Chardonnay, for example. As if naming your daughter after a house white wasn’t

WHEN DID YOU LAST MEET A BABY TRACY OR KEVIN? POSSIBLY NOT SINCE THE EARLY 1980S child in the world with that name). Having a name that everyone’s heard of does, of course, mean there will always be an abundance of personalised teddies, water bottles, stationery and the like to choose from every time you go shopping. The downside is that as soon as your little Oscar or Amelia can read, they’ll pester you to buy those items. Don’t worry though, if you do settle on a more unusual name, there are now plenty of companies that specialise in making bespoke personalised gifts, regardless of whether you have an Ava or a Zephaniah. Once you’ve decided whether you want to join the top-10 camp or not, the next hurdle is whether you want something ubercontemporary – hi there, Dexter, Grey and Logan. Or something old-fashioned-but-backin-vogue – hello, Lily, Connie and Elsie. While there’s a strong trend for naming children after grandparents, caution should be

questionable enough, it’s asking for trouble. Every time she sees a bottle with her name on it, she’ll want to take a swig. For some parents there’s the temptation to name their offspring after a favourite actor, character or sporting hero, though it’s worth noting that this doesn’t increase the child’s likelihood of following in their namesake’s footsteps, and may only provide them with rather a lot to live up to, as in the case of Ulysses, Adonis or Usain. Then there are unisex names, like Francis and Hilary. However, selecting a name that works both ways is only likely to lead to confusion. Unless you’re planning on raising a gender-neutral child – which is about as realistic as trying to raise one without sugar, screens and nits – you might as well pick a name that doesn’t invite endless questions. If you’re struggling to come up with both a boy’s and a girl’s name, then finding out the

PROFILE Pepa loves meeting customers at the brand’s regular pop-up shopping events across London

s a child, Pepa Gonzalez was never really interested in learning how to make clothes. “I was always a bit of a rebel,” she says, with a wry smile. “My mother specialised in creating very delicate garments like christening gowns, using all these amazing, intricate techniques that she had learned as a little girl. “But I had four older brothers and I just wanted to do whatever they were doing. It made sense to me that if they weren’t being told they had to sew or iron, then I shouldn’t be doing any of those things either!” Of course, the 36-year-old Malaga native’s outlook has since changed somewhat – now the face of a hugely successful childrenswear business, Pepa’s love and talent for design came to a head five years ago when she established Pepa & Co; a brand that’s famed for bringing vintage-inspired, traditional children’s clothing back to the fore. Even Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is among her many fans. “It’s obviously wonderful that the Duke and Duchess are admirers of Pepa & Co,” she tells me. “I’m truly honoured that they like our clothing. But there’s also so much more to us than that – the brand would still exist even if the Royal Family weren’t interested in us. And we’d never want people to assume we’re using the children to market our clothing.” The brand began its life as a passion project in 2013 when, after three years of living in the UK (working for both the Spanish Embassy and as a nanny), Pepa spotted a gap in the market – a demand for classic, traditional baby and children’s clothing that’s sweet, well made and still affordable.

She began by handpicking her favourite childrenswear brands from Spain and selling their clothes via her own online boutique. However, it wasn’t long before she was keen to start bringing her own beautiful designs to the table; and so, Pepa & Co was born. These days, her small team of five is based in Hammersmith, while the manufacturing side of the business is located in Spain. “Designing new pieces is definitely the best part of my job,” she explains. “I love finding inspiration in old family albums, reading books or watching an old movie. I think the best ideas always come to you when you least expect them.” Pepa sets aside 10 to 15 days each month to work on her designs, “locking” herself away so she can’t be interrupted. Even adult fashion inspires her, she tells me, and she sometimes takes different cuts, prints and materials to devise how they might work for children. Soft colours, delicate materials and cute traditional prints feature heavily in her pieces, exuding a sense of innocence and nostalgia –

“kids have plenty of time to wear jeans,” Pepa says. “One of the sayings we have at Pepa & Co is that ‘we enjoy seeing our children look like children’. We’re currently living in a world where everything has to be fast, including the speed at which our kids are growing up. Then we end up looking back and think ‘I wish I’d dressed my children in these sweet and innocent outfits when they were young enough to enjoy it. “My mother used to dress my brothers and me in very traditional clothing. Cute little coats, shirts, shorts, dresses and rompers, some with Peter Pan collars or tartan patterns – so I get a lot of my ideas from my childhood, too. Spanish clothes in those days were made to perfection, even better than a machine could manage. Every stitch was identical and so carefully placed – it’s amazing, really.” So, is this why Pepa is so keen to keep the production side of the business in Spain? “Absolutely. We want to maintain those handmade standards and values from 40 to 50 years ago,” she says. “At Pepa & Co, each stage of manufacture is controlled by a person – it’s never just left for the machines to do. Even though I can’t put them together myself, I can always tell whether a garment has been properly made or not.” Creating clothes that look as good as they feel is quite clearly paramount to the business

WE WANT TO MAINTAIN THOSE HANDMADE STANDARDS AND VALUES FROM 40 TO 50 YEARS AGO owner, who admits that it’s her dream to create “pieces that people want to keep forever.” Pepa wants children to feel special wearing the dresses, pinafores, jumpers and bonnets she designs, which is why she travels all over Spain to source the finest, high-quality fabrics – to guarantee longevity. This goes some way to explaining the popularity of the label’s pop-up stores, which are held in different locations throughout the capital for a few days at a time. Pepa’s designs, after all, are made to be touched, and the photographs on her website often just don’t do them justice. Families can browse the brand’s beautifully-soft pieces, plus the new collection for newborns coming this winter, in the Notting Hill pop-up from 12 November to 10 December, or in Belgravia now until 15 January. “The pop-ups are always a lot of fun – we get to meet so many people,” Pepa says. “It just makes your business so much more accessible and gives it a human side. I think there should always be a person behind a

brand, rather than just a big investment.” Alongside the pop-ups, Pepa tells me her main focus for next year is developing new designs and working out how they can produce their clothes more sustainably. But at the end of the day, the designer admits she is just so happy to be doing something she loves, regardless of what comes next. “I just feel so lucky that I can bring my roots and culture to the UK – it’s almost like people are admiring my country and where I come from. My husband jokes that I’m a little too obsessed with my work, but I have so much invested in it – not just financially but emotionally, too. The brand is part of my identity now, and even though it’s hard work, I’m having so much fun.” With another royal baby on the horizon, Pepa may have her work cut out if her previous clientele is anything to go by. Could Meghan Markle and Prince Harry be pining for Pepa & Co’s cute cotton rompers and baby bonnets by next spring? We’ll just have to watch this space…

BEAUTY

hat could be more incredible than growing another human inside your own flesh? When it comes to the awesome capabilities of the body, nothing even comes close to having a baby. It’s hardly surprising that such a remarkable achievement comes with a few bodily repercussions – and we’re not just talking placentas. Along with leaky boobs, stretch marks, and a tendency to well up at the John Lewis Christmas advert, you may also be wondering why there appears to be a small rodent circling the shower plughole every morning. Assuming you don’t actually have a mouse problem, the chances are it’s your own hair. Hair loss is one of the lesser known side-effects of having a baby, but before you break into a cold sweat and start googling hair transplants, don’t panic: you’re not going bald. It’s extremely common for hair to become thinner following childbirth, effecting around half of all new mums. It occurs because during pregnancy, levels of oestrogen rise, meaning that the anagen cycle, or growth cycle, of the hair is prolonged, so the normal rate of hair shedding slows down. This also explains why many women are lucky enough to enjoy a thicker, fuller and shinier mane while in possession of a bump. Around three or four months after giving birth the hormone levels return to normal, meaning that the anagen cycle will shorten again, which is why many women experience accelerated hair loss, or telogen effluvium, as it’s also known. As Harley Street trichologist Sara G. Allison explains, this is a natural process: “Telogen effluvium occurs because changes to the body cause the older hairs to be brought to an end of their life cycle earlier than the usual three to four years. By entering the telogen phase prematurely, many more hairs than usual are ready to fall out. This is most noticeable when you wash your hair. However, the scalp and the remaining hair look healthy. You’ll not have bald patches, but rather a generalised thinning.” The good news is, that unlike some other hair and scalp conditions, postpartum hair loss is both temporary and reversible. “It takes three to four months for the affected hairs to fall out after their growth has stopped. After a resting period, new hairs then grow from the hair follicles as usual.” adds Allison. “A normal pattern and thickness of hair returns within a few months once these new hairs are established.” Yet even temporary hair thinning can be very upsetting for new mums, so Carly Price, a partner at Muse hairdressers, London, says it’s worth taking extra care of your hair during this time. “Unfortunately no products will stop hair loss, however, there are some products that can help such as scalp treatments, hydrating shampoos and conditioners, as well as hair masks that will keep your hair fully moisturised and nourished, and oil products that contain natural oil ingredients, such as argan oil to

HAIR LOSS IS ONE OF THE LESSER KNOWN SIDE-EFFECTS OF HAVING A BABY keep your hair feeling and looking in its best condition. I’d also recommend not over-brushing to avoid further damage and breakage and when brushing the hair, use a softer bristled brush.” However, if you’re feeling particularly disillusioned with your once lustrous locks, why not turn it into an opportunity to try something new? “For those with hair loss I always recommend adding layers to their hairstyle, as they’re a great way to instantly add thickness and texture,’ advises Carly. ‘Bobs are also extremely popular for those suffering with pregnancy hair loss, as an angled or blunt bob can distract from any hair flatness and draws the eye downwards. Experimenting with hairstyles like braids and half-updo’s are also great and can make your hair look fuller and thicker instantly too.” And while it may seem counterproductive, Carly stresses the need to keep going for a trim. “It’s important to get regular hair cuts to avoid split ends and your hair being further damaged, which will stop it from growing and becoming healthier quicker. Hair only grows around half an inch a month, so you may not see a huge growth in thickness and change for around six months to a year.” In addition, it’s important to eat a nutritious diet and to try to get enough sleep, not just for your hair but for your overall wellbeing. Dr Raghu Reddy, a Hair Loss Specialist and Transplant Surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street says: “it’s really important to maintain a balanced diet that’s rich in essential vitamins, nutrients and protein. Hair is made up of keratin, which is a natural protein, so ensuring your diet is high in protein will help to keep your hair strong and healthy.” Fortunately, for the vast majority of women, with time and patience hair will return to its former glory. “Hair loss after pregnancy shouldn’t be permanent unless there are underlying issues, including excessive blood loss, stress and a poor diet,” adds Dr Raghu. “One hair cycle is around nine months, so you’d expect the hair to normalise again after that period.” In the meantime, look after your mind, body and hair, and focus on the tiny person who made it all worth it – and who probably has even less hair than you do.

orking as an acupuncturist, I have a huge belief in Chinese medicine and the link between how your mind, emotions and mental health, as well as body and spirit, can have an effect on your developing baby. Having trained as a midwife in the 1980s, the model was very biomedical, and while there was a focus on the health of the mother and baby, it really only started when the baby was delivered. We now know so much about how the mind, nutrition, stress and anxiety can have an impact on the future health of the baby, as well as an understanding that there are opportunities for growth in each trimester.

FIRST TRIMESTER

back though, so 20 minutes a day of quiet visualising or meditation will help. Practise regularly to gain a greater sense of control. We all experience a host of emotions, but these can be heightened when you’re carrying a growing baby.

SECOND TRIMESTER By now you’re probably in the swing of things, with more energy and a renewed sense of wellbeing. Now’s the time to start communicating with your baby on a much deeper level. Introduce your baby to your favourite music, sing and talk to her, tell her how much you’re looking forward to holding her – make a connection on a deep, personal level. Find a quiet time with privacy, where no one can overhear you and spend some quality time with your baby.

THIRD TRIMESTER This is the time to really focus on your baby and build your relationship. She’ll be here very soon and if you stroke her, talk and sing to her now she’ll

recognise your voice and soothing touch when she’s born. Now that so much more is known babies, both in the uterus and at birth, we can see that the relationship you forge with your baby when she arrives can be a continuation of the connections that you began when you were first pregnant. In this last trimester, your baby is both physically and mentally mature enough to send and receive signals from you and those closest to you. You can use touch and sound to send messages to her and respond to her movements, too. If a sudden, loud noise startles her and she kicks, you can soothe her with your voice and caress your abdomen. It’s thought that by communicating with your baby in the uterus, you may boost her intelligence and lessen the risk of her developing ADHD. Playing music (particularly classical) to your unborn baby is also thought to promote intellectual development – perhaps by stimulating more connections to be made between the neurons. Music that babies hear often during their mother’s periods of pregnancy relaxation has been shown to be familiar to them once they’re born, and importantly, soothe distress.

and is widely recommended by health visitors. Colief® Infant Drops is a natural product which pharmacists recommend to new parents to test for temporary lactose intolerance. It works by breaking down the lactose in baby’s milk, whether that’s from breast or bottle. Having worked in the healthcare profession as a qualified health visitor and lecturer for more than 20 years, Dawn Kelly is a member of the Colief Expert Panel and recommends Colief® Infant Drops when the symptoms of colic appear. Dawn advises that topping up your colicky baby’s lactase levels is a sensible first step to tackling the telltale symptoms of colic naturally. Colief® Infant Drops is available in supermarkets and pharmacies nationwide and online, as well as at colief.com Priced £11.99 for 7ml and £15.99 for 15ml.

TOP TIPS FOR DEALING WITH COLIC: 1. Although it is extremely distressing, the most important thing to remember if your baby is affected by colic is to remain calm. 2. Introduce a soothing routine around the time of the day when your baby’s colic is usually at its worst. You’ll find that this will typically be in the evenings. 3. Keep a log of the times when your baby’s colic is at its worst – you may be able to find a pattern associated with any triggers, allowing you to understand better how to ease these symptoms. 4. Try a one-week trial of Colief® Infant Drops to help diagnose whether sensitivity to lactose could be the problem. You could relieve the symptoms within a few days and be able to continue enjoying this special time with your newborn.

hen you’re a parent, nothing is more distressing than hearing your baby continuously cry. However, it’s essential to remember that crying is your baby’s main form of communication – their excessive cries could be a way of letting you know they’re suffering from colic. Although it can be worrying, colic is in fact common. Thankfully symptoms of colic, if related to temporary lactose intolerance, which can happen as your baby’s digestive system develops, can be easily treated with Colief® Infant Drops. The drops contain lactase, a naturally-occurring enzyme that helps relieve the symptoms by breaking down the lactose in milk, making it easier to digest. Simply add the drops to your baby’s feeds, either in expressed breast milk or formula, 30 minutes before feeding to allow time for the drops to work. Temporary lactose intolerance is common in many babies as their digestive systems develop. Topping up a baby’s lactase levels is a good first step to tackling the symptoms naturally, as it’s the most commonly prescribed treatment for colicky symptoms

PROFESSOR AMY BROWN

THIS ISSUE WE ASK:

I’M QUITE NERVOUS WHEN FEEDING MY NEWBORN, AND SPENDING CHRISTMAS AT MY IN-LAWS. ANY COPING TIPS?

I

deally Christmas would be a magical time to have a new baby. Your hosts would look after you, admire your baby, and make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately, we’re not all blessed with that particular family and you may be anxious about how things will work out. But there are strategies to make it easier. Ask whether there are any particular plans for the day, and remind everyone you’ll need to focus on feeding your baby. It’s likely that everyone will want a cuddle with your baby. Although it’s great that so many people love your brand-new small person, remember your baby is still tiny and getting into their breastfeeding rhythm, and keeping her close to you so you can spot feeding cues is important. Once you know who is coming, have a think about how they feel about breastfeeding. Their knowledge and experience of breastfeeding might affect how they react to you doing it. Perhaps they’ve had a bad experience. Perhaps they’ve never seen it

before. Perhaps they were told to do it in a different way. This can lead to questions like “Are you really going to feed the baby at the table?”, “Does he need to be feeding again?”, or “Are you sure you have enough milk?”. Remember these comments aren’t coming from a bad place. Older generations in particular, were probably given different guidance on how to feed their baby, and may think they are helping. It’s important to remember how much things have changed, talk about how things are different now, as we have more information. Stress that it wasn’t wrong before. But just different now. Finally, the good news is that having an alcoholic drink – in realistic measures – is fine when breastfeeding as alcohol doesn’t get into your milk in high amounts. It’s best not to drink too much to make sure you’re safe to care for your baby (and no one wants a hangover when caring for a tiny baby!). KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON • Remind everyone that you’ve just had a baby and are busy settling into your new role of motherhood. Sit on the sofa, cuddle your baby and let everyone else get on with ‘stuff’ – and absolutely don’t feel guilty. • Think about who your allies are. Can your partner remind any family members ahead of time who might be difficult that you’ll be breastfeeding frequently? • Think about your response to likely questions in advance. It’s helpful to have a few quick lines at hand like “Yes, feeding her so much makes sure that I have lots of milk. Could you pass me a mince pie, please?”. • You don’t have to ‘share’ the baby with everyone. It’s absolutely fine to ask for them back at the first signs of wanting a feed. • Some babies might feel a bit overwhelmed and feed better in a quiet place. This can also be a great excuse if you feel overwhelmed too!

LABOUR

For your pains Dr Shazia Malik, CON SU LTANT OBSTE TRICIAN AN D GYNAECOLOGIST AT TH E PORTL AN D H OSPITAL, TALKS TH ROUGH YOU R PAIN-R ELIEF OP TION S or first-time mothers, labour can be a frightening prospect – many cite the unknown being a cause for concern but the most common issue and worry is pain. Pain during labour is commonly spoken but it’s different for every woman. Pain is a sensory experience that is felt differently by everybody. Some find an inner calm, some prefer to express the pain they’re in by shouting, while others want to have all the pain relief they can.

F

UNDERSTANDING PAIN Before you start to worry about the pain you may experience during childbirth, you need to understand how your body adapts to labour: why you can feel some discomfort and how your mind perceives it. During the first stage of labour, contractions make your cervix gradually thin out and begin to dilate. As contractions begin, tissues stretch and the tiny pressure receptors in the nerves are stimulated, sending lightning-fast impulses along the nerves to the spinal cord. Pain receptors are stimulated as well if the surrounding muscles are tense. In the spinal cord, these impulses must pass through a sort of gate that can stop some impulses and allow others to pass through into the brain, where they could be registered as pain. So, you can influence pain at three sites: where it’s produced in the first place, at the gate in the spinal cord, and in the brain where the pain is perceived. In working out your own techniques for managing the cause of labour pain, you’ll want to employ pain-relief measures that can control pain at all three of these sites.

DRUG-FREE PAIN RELIEF For hundreds of years, women in different parts of the world have used relaxation,

98 | baby-magazine.co.uk

breathing, self-hypnosis and other ways of coping with pain during labour and birth. Being able to relax rather than tense up during a contraction helps your body manage labour better. Many antenatal classes cover relaxation and breathing techniques and it’s good to find out about these, whatever you decide to do when you go into labour. • Slow rhythmic breathing will help you get into a relaxed state that should help you cope better with labour. • Using a birth ball may ease lower backache and help you relax. It is also useful for support in different labour positions. • Having a water birth helps some women cope better. The water provides support for your body, so you can move freely and the warmth can help you feel relaxed. You can hire a birth pool to use at home or there may be one available at your hospital. Tell

• Gas and air is available when you want it. Using a mask or mouthpiece, you breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen as a contraction starts and while it lasts. It’s simple to use, quick to act and wears off in minutes.

PAIN RELIEF USING DRUGS Some women are keen to avoid drugs while others are happy to consider all the available options. For women having their first baby, the experience of labour is unpredictable. For

WRITE DOWN YOUR WISHES IN YOUR BIRTH PLAN, BUT REMEMBER TO KEEP AN OPEN MIND your midwife as early in your pregnancy as possible if you’d like a water birth, as special arrangements may need to be made. • TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a small machine that’s attached to your back with sticky pads. It sends out tiny electrical impulses to block pain signals sent from your body to your brain, making you less aware of it. It can also trigger the release your body’s pain-relieving chemicals, called endorphins. You can hire or buy a TENS machine so you have it for the start of labour. Try it out before you go into labour (after you reach 37 weeks) to learn how it works.

this reason, it’s a good idea to be aware of the options that are available. • Pain-relieving injections (opioids, diamorphine or pethidine) are given by injection into your leg or bottom. Each one works slightly differently, but they’re strong opiate painkillers that can be helpful in the first stages of labour. Find out in advance what injections your hospital offers and talk to your midwife about the side-effects. While they may help you cope better with contractions they can cause nausea, drowsiness, and prevent you from using the birthing pool for at least two hours

after you’ve had the injection. • Epidural is an anaesthetic that goes into your back. It blocks pain messages to the brain by numbing the nerves in your lower back. The amount you get will depend on the stage of labour you’re in and how much pain relief you want. Most epidurals in labour these days are able to give great pain relief while still allowing you to mobilise (mobile epidurals). Epidurals give complete pain relief for around 90 per cent of women while having little effect on the baby. You can however only have it in hospital, as it needs to be given by an anaesthetist. Ask your midwife whether there are any anaesthetists on call, day and night to give epidurals. Bear in mind that if the anaesthetist is with someone else, you may have to wait until they’re finished. Also you may not be allowed to eat once you have an epidural. There are small risks and the anaesthetist will be able to explain them to you. There’s also a slightly higher chance of an emergency caesarean or assisted vaginal delivery (such as with forceps) if you have an epidural – especially if it’s your first labour and if you have it early in labour.

ALTERNATIVE PAIN RELIEF Some choose alternative treatments such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, homeopathy, hypnosis, massage and reflexology. Most of these techniques aren’t proven to provide effective pain relief. If you’d like to use any

of these methods, it’s important to discuss them with your midwife or doctor and let the hospital know beforehand. Most hospitals don’t offer them for pain relief during labour. Hypnobirthing has been studied – and shown if used correctly, to reduce the need for pain relief medications and epidurals in labour – and so increase the chances of a normal birth. If you think this appeals to you, it’s very helpful to involve your birthing partner in the classes, and to start them by 24 weeks of pregnancy to be most effective.

IT’S YOUR CHOICE

want more pain relief than planned, or your doctor or midwife may suggest more effective pain relief to help the delivery. It’s so very important to be flexible and adjust plans according to how your labour progresses. This gives you the best chance of having a labour and birth that you can look back on with joy and a real sense of satisfaction and achievement – whatever kind of birth you end up with on the day.

Write down your wishes in your birth plan, but keep an open mind. You may find you

PREGNANCY

TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT

CHRISTMAS PREGNANCIES The sisters give advice on keeping calm throughout the festive chaos

regnancy is always challenging at some point. Let’s face it, growing a new human being, capable of living, breathing and thinking is never going to be straightforward, but somehow the festive period seems to add an additional layer of stress and complication. Christmas parties are often the time when people let their hair down, fuelled by cocktails you can’t have. Being around drunk people is challenging at the best of times, but swollen ankles, a baby that’s kicking you in the ribs, a perpetual need to pee and hot flushes into the mix, and Christmas can be a killer. So read on for some tips to make it bearable. Christmas seems fuelled by alcohol, but drinking alcohol isn’t recommended at any point in your pregnancy, particularly not in the first trimester when the most important developmental changes are taking place. That doesn’t, however, mean you can’t enjoy a nice drink. Stock up with non-alcoholic drinks that you enjoy. We love the Seedlip spirits which feel like a good old-fashioned tipple but are in fact tee-total. Make sure you’re mixing your drinks with plenty of water and that you’re near a loo to relieve your poor squashed bladder. Endless standing up at drinks parties is hell for your already-swollen legs. Be discerning – accept that this year you’ll go to fewer parties and those you do go to will probably end earlier for you. And while that can seem boring, remember it’s not forever and you’ll soon have a little baby in your arms that’ll make it all worth it. Make sure you wear suitable shoes – if you have to wear heels, take advantage of the current block-heel trend rather than a

P

wobbly stiletto, and seek out a corner to sit down and catch up with friends rather than standing the whole night. Negotiating the shops at Christmas is more challenging than ever – so take advantage of the fact that in the 21st century we no longer have to go to shops to buy things. Make a comprehensive list of those you need to buy for and in good time settle down on a sofa and do your shopping online with your feet up. The most indulgent thing a pregnant woman can lap up during the holiday period is not eat, drink or be given presents – it’s all about sleep. Most of us manage to get a bit of time off, so use this to have lie ins, early nights and daytime siesta. Acknowledge the tremendous work your body is doing to create a whole new person and give it the energy to do this. You’ll emerge happier, more resilient and with a nice

big healthy bump as a result. If you’re staying with noisy relatives, don’t forget to pack the ear plugs! If you’re hosting Christmas or dealing with other children, delegate responsibility. When you’re pregnant you should be doing as little as possible, so rope in the relatives and give them clear jobs to do. It’s sometimes hard for alpha women to accept help, but it’s the only way to go. Because your emotions are high and your tolerance low, this might not be the best Christmas you ever have, but remember it doesn’t need to be. You have plenty of Christmases ahead of you, so try to engineer it to provide yourself with the rest and relaxation that your body is craving and instead look forward to the exciting year ahead of you. It’s rarely the perfect time to be having a baby, but when that baby arrives, it’s always perfect.

With increasing reports about babies needing to experience genuine vegetable flavours (not just blends) from their earliest food tastes, packing a variety of greens into your little one’s diet is a great way to boost your whole family’s intake. Many nutritionists actually believe we should be aiming higher than the five-a-day mantra. Here are some ways to help: • Line a roasting dish with foil, cut several sweet potatoes, carrots and parsnips into long batons. Drizzle over a generous glug of olive oil, and sprinkle over a couple of teaspoons of dried or fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme or sage. Roast for 35 minutes at 180˚C. Perfect with a meal or as a snack, the veg will last several days in the fridge and can be enjoyed by everyone. • Not only are raw vegetables cut served with dips a great way to feed vegetables to your family, why not add more vegetables to the dip itself? Whizz a cooked beetroot or olives into shop-bought hummus, or purée cooked peas and spinach into cream cheese. • Quick veg- and egg-packed meal options include omelettes, frittatas and fritters, which are all one-pan dishes that can be whipped up using frozen, canned or grated veg such as sweetcorn, peas, courgettes or carrot. WHAT IS A FETAL WELLBEING ULTRASOUND, SHOULD I HAVE ONE?

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

WHAT IS TONGUE-TIE AND DOES IT NEED TO BE TREATED? Tongue-tie (or ankyloglossia) is a condition where the baby has a tight piece of skin (the frenulum) which tethers the underside of her tongue to the floor of her mouth. This can cause a number of feeding problems, including preventing the baby from opening her mouth wide enough to latch on, sore nipples for the mother, difficulty in feeding effectively, swallowing air and making a clicking noise when feeding. But it’s important to note that these problems can also be caused by the baby latching on badly. There are two main types of tongue-tie. The first is anterior tongue-tie, where the frenulum is too short and tight and extends too far towards the tip of the tongue. This is clearly visible and will often be accompanied by a V-shaped notch at the tip of the tongue. Posterior tongue-tie, however, is hidden under the lining at the base of the tongue. This is harder to diagnose but can be suspected if the tongue dimples down in the middle, or if the tongue appears to be very short. An anterior tongue-tie is treated by dividing it with a pair of sharp, sterile scissors. It’s a simple procedure which only takes a few seconds and is normally pain-free. Tongue-tie can be treated on the NHS – you should ask your midwife for details. Do note, however, that a tongue-tie only needs treating if it’s causing a problem. The difficulty is knowing if it’s tongue-tie or bad latching. For this reason, it’s best to seek a second opinion, preferably from your GP. Clare Byam-Cook, breastfeeding expert and author

Currently all women in the UK are offered two ultrasound scans during pregnancy: at 12 weeks and again at 20 weeks. In addition, some are offered an extra scan in late pregnancy, for example, 28 or 36 weeks. This is called a fetal wellbeing scan and is also known as a late pregnancy or third-trimester scan. Usually this is done due to some risk factor, for example, a maternal condition such as pre-eclampsia or diabetes; a suspected problem with the baby’s growth; or a previous pregnancy complication such as stillbirth. In many countries the scan is routine, and some doctors believe it should be offered to all women. The main purpose of the late pregnancy scan is to identify those babies that show signs of poor growth or poor placental function. Offering such a scan to all women roughly triples the chances of picking up babies with growth problems; it’s also thought to detect risk of stillbirth. In theory, this should reduce the risks to these babies as they can be monitored more closely and, if necessary, delivered earlier. However, at present, it’s not known whether offering such a scan to all women improves outcomes, and there are ongoing studies to assess this. The scan aims to assess fetal growth and development. This is done by looking at the position and movements of the baby; measuring the size of body parts (the head, abdomen and thigh bone length); estimating the fetal weight, based on these measurements; assessing the amount of amniotic fluid; measuring the blood flow from the baby to the placenta and within the baby; and checking the position of the placenta. HOW CAN I HELP MY THREE MONTH OLD TAKE A NAP ON HER OWN? Most three- to six-month-olds will sleep for around 15 hours a day, including regular naps throughout. During the day your baby ideally needs three sleeps totalling no more than five hours. The key is for us as parents to notice when they are tired. With a young baby, I suggest you lay her on her play mat, sit and chat to her for a while and then let her be stimulated by the toys hanging above her. Signs she is ready for a nap include baby ‘cycling’ her legs, next she will start to clasp her hands and try to rub her face. She will then start to get vocal and begin to moan and groan, and finally she will start to shout. The key is to notice these signals and take her to her Moses basket or cot to sleep at the stage when she starts to moan a little. Don’t wait until she is shouting, as this is when she will be overtired. Take her to a designated place to sleep. Ensure it is dark. This is a signal to baby that sleep is needed. I truly believe that to swaddle a baby allows her to rest and relax – it gives them a sense of security, but this a personal choice. Place her in her cot (after a nappy change, if needed) and then leave her to settle to sleep. If your baby is settling herself to sleep at 8pm, she is able to do it during the day. You might find that she moans and shouts for a short period of time, but she will then sleep. The key is you notice the ‘window of tiredness’ – this tends to be 90 minutes after first waking in the morning, 30 to 60 minutes after the lunchtime feed, and at 4-5pm in the afternoon. hen you’re pregnant, you’re bombarded with information on what you should and shouldn’t eat, but when it comes to Christmas – traditionally a time for indulgence – things can get even more complicated. Here’s your no-nonsense guide to what festive favourites you can add to the menu this Christmas and what’s best to avoid:

W

MEAT

Turkey is a Christmas dinner staple, and it’s one you won’t have to miss out on this year. As with all meat and poultry, make sure it’s cooked thoroughly throughout – it needs to be steaming hot, with no trace of pink or blood. The same goes for sausages wrapped in bacon, which can also be enjoyed if cooked through. Cured meats such as Parma ham and salami, however, are best avoided (there is a risk they could contain toxoplasmosis-causing parasites), along with all types of pâté. Liver pâtés contain too much vitamin A, which can harm your baby’s development, and even fish or vegetarian pâté can contain listeria, too.

Seafood

If Christmas morning without smoked salmon for breakfast is unthinkable, you’re in luck! It’s safe to eat when pregnant, as long as it’s been kept cold and fresh – probably best to give it a miss if it’s been sat out on a buffet for a while, though. There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there with regards to eating shellfish during pregnancy, but the NHS advises you not to eat any raw shellfish, like oysters, mussels and scallops, due to the risk of food poisoning – not fun when pregnant. You can eat shellfish if it’s been thoroughly cooked and cold, pre-cooked prawns are fine too.

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

VEGETABLES

We all know how important it is to get our five-a-day, and filling up on fresh veg when pregnant is great for you and your baby’s health. If you grow your own, or like to stock up at farm shops, always make sure all traces of soil have been washed off your vegetables before cooking. They’re a Christmas dinner classic and, whether you love them or hate them, cooked Brussels

sprouts are packed with amazing goodness. Full of folate to help with fetal development and magnesium to help build and repair body tissue, pile these up on your plate on 25 December and your baby will reap the rewards!

Cheese

Christmas is the time for cheeseboards, but, as any pregnant lady will know, working out what cheese you can and can’t eat is a bit of a minefield. The good news? Hard cheeses, including festive favourite, Stilton, are fine to indulge in, even if they are unpasteurised. However, it’s recommended that pregnant women don’t eat any blue veined soft cheeses, like gorgonzola, and Roquefort, or mould-ripened soft cheese, like brie and camembert, due to the risk of listeria.

PUDDING

With a severe lack of champagne or port over the festive season, it’s only right that you get to treat yourself to an extra helping of dessert! Mince pies, trifle and Christmas cake all get the thumbs up, as well as any shop-bought ice cream. One thing to keep in mind is the use of raw eggs in things like homemade mousse, custard, meringues, icing and cheesecake. These used to be considered unsafe during pregnancy, but now, as long as the eggs have the red British Lion Quality stamp on the shell, they’re highly unlikely to contain salmonella. If you’re eating out, or don’t know whether the eggs used are Lion Quality or not, it’s best to be on the safe side and opt for something else.

Nuts

You might have heard that nuts should be avoided when you’re pregnant, but government guidelines were updated in 2009 and now it’s safe to eat them, unless you’re allergic to nuts, of course, or a health professional advises you not to. Peanuts are a good source of protein and folic acid, while walnuts are packed with omega-3 (essential for your baby’s brain and nervous system), so there’s plenty of good reasons to keep the party nut bowls filled up this year.

Festive feast CH RISTMAS IS TH E PER FEC T TIM E TO INTRODUCE BABY TO DELICIOUS SE ASONAL FL AVOU R S, SAYS IN FANT N UTRITIONIST AT PICCOLO, Alice Fotheringham

R A S P B E R RY YO G H U R T S E M I - F R E D D O W I T H A M A R E T T O C R U M B S Preparation: 1 hour Freezing: 8 hours Serves 6 Suitable from 1 year INGREDIENTS

• 150g frozen raspberries • 1 tbsp brown sugar • 4 egg whites • 4 tbsp maple syrup or runny honey • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar • a generous pinch sea salt • 500g natural thick full-fat yoghurt • 100g Amaretto biscuits (optional) • 100g frozen or fresh raspberries, to garnish This is a real seasonal showstopper that doesn’t leave you feeling heavy and full – a delicious treat to be enjoyed by the whole family.

METHOD

Line a 20cm long x 10cm wide x 6cm deep loaf tin with cling film, leaving enough hanging over sides to fold over. Gently heat 150g frozen raspberries with the sugar until it is bubbling away and thick for around 8-10 minutes, then set aside to cool. Meanwhile, strain the yoghurt in the fridge in a muslin or thick tea towel-lined sieve for at least an hour to thicken. In a large heat-proof bowl, combine the egg whites, honey, cream of tartar and salt. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (the bottom shouldn’t touch the water) and using an electric beater, whisk on high speed until stiff, glossy peaks form (around 5-8 minutes). Fold a few large tablespoons of the meringue mixture into the yoghurt, then gently fold in the remaining meringue, until well mixed.

Spoon one third of the yoghurt meringue mixture into the prepared loaf tin, pressing down with a spatula to make sure the mixture is evenly distributed across the base and into the corners of the tin. Working in layers, follow with a layer of the raspberry mixture and cover with a further third of the yoghurt meringue. Repeat once more, using another third of the raspberries and all the remaining yoghurt meringue. Lightly tap the filled tin against your work surface to remove any bubbles and smooth the surface of with a spoon. Cover and freeze until firm, about 8 hours or overnight. Remove the semifreddo from the freezer and leave to stand at room temperature for 5-10 minutes to soften slightly. Turn out onto a serving platter and scatter with frozen raspberries and Amaretto biscuit crumbs. Slice thickly and serve.

&Breathe retreats take place at the Four Seasons Hampshire

HAMPSHIRE Zoey Goto AN D H ER NIN E MONTH OLD E SCAPED TO TH E COU NTRY FOR 24 HOU R S OF R E STOR ATIVE SELF- CAR E

s a parent of two small children, I have first-hand experience of how easy it is to overlook one’s self-care. So when I heard about the &Breathe retreats – which offer parentand-baby minibreaks with a focus on healthy food, exercise and relaxation to help ‘you be your best you’ – I couldn’t wait to sign me and my youngest daughter Indiana up. Started by Clio Wood three years ago, &Breathe espouses the simple but powerful ethos that to look after others, we must first of all look after ourselves. The concept has proved so popular that they now run postnatal retreats in the UK, France, Morocco and US. The 24hour retreat takes place at the five-star Four Seasons hotel in Hampshire, which may only be 45 minutes from London but feels a whole world away when you’re surrounded by the serene rolling green landscape of the English countryside. Arriving at the &Breathe retreat felt effortless, as the practicalities were swiftly taken care of – from nappies and children’s toiletries to baby food and bottle sterilisers, everything is dealt with on arrival. Following a delicious threecourse lunch in the private dining room, we spent the afternoon working with two personal trainers on rehabilitation exercises, reconnecting with our breath and core and using low-impact interval training to get our postnatal posture

realigned. Post-workout, Indiana and I enjoyed some precious mother-daughter time, splashing around in the pool. That evening, babysitters arrived at our hotel rooms so that we could have an adults-only evening. It was the first time in ages that I’d eaten a meal without a baby attached to me, which in itself was rather liberating! It was also lovely to have the time to connect with the other mothers. We discussed the massive physical and emotional changes that parenting brings, and enjoyed dining in the company of other grownups. Amazingly, I returned to find that Indiana hadn’t woken up for the babysitter, and even managed to catch up on some much-needed sleep in the hotel’s sumptuous bed. The next morning, us parents took advantage of the babies starting their day at sunrise by meeting as a group for a stroll around the grounds, followed by a healthy breakfast. We then dropped the babies at the crèche and spent a heavenly morning being pampered, with a spa treatment (included in the package), followed by some blissful me-time. I came away refreshed, revived and feeling that &Breathe is more than a retreat. Next time, we’ll be booking in for a week! Retreats from £495, andbreathepostnatal.com

Nina wanted to create bedding that can be mixed and matched

This award-winning wheeled chalkboard toy is ideal for whizzing around and getting creative Mister Crocodile on a stick ¤73, ooh-noo.com

She wants her kids to grow up appreciating good design

INSPIRE Why did you set up your company ooh noo? Becoming a mother, I wanted to raise my children so that they’re not only aware of design, but understand and appreciate it too. I decided to surround them with designer items and toys in our house. I wanted bedding for the kids that was well made that I could mix and match and use for my son Aleksander, and daughter Diana. Before long, I was designing the bedding with the help of others, who are now members of the ooh noo team. The children made as much mess as possible, so I washed and tumble dried the bedding without mercy. At the same time, I was paying careful attention to see what they loved most. Then, when I couldn’t find a certain toy designed nicely, I designed it myself. And so in 2014, ooh noo was born. Describe a typical day. Many days are running from meeting to meeting. We have a strong design and engineering team, as we develop all the

130 | baby-magazine.co.uk

NINA MIHOVEC We chat to the mother of two and founder of ooh noo about how she started her own interiors and toy brand toys ourselves. From the office, I usually stop by at our packing department, where all our orders are packed. We often do photo shoots too, as we want to create context for our toys to keep control of their image. Then it’s home time to be with the family. What inspires you when you’re designing new products? As a designer I can’t sit still. I’m also surrounded by my great team Nina’s children are the brand’s chief testers

of enthusiastic designers; as you can imagine our daily life is all about creativity. By the time a series is on sale, we’ll have already come up with new and exciting beddings and toys we want to produce and share. I love to follow fashion, and adult trends. But most of the inspiration does comes from my kids. I learn something from them each day. What has been your proudest moment to date? I think the moment when ooh noo turned from a passion project to a real-deal business. Seeing my children, and other babies and kids playing with our toys really makes it all worth it. What advice would you give to someone starting up a business? To follow your common sense and instinct too – so that you

can improvise when times get hard. Of course you need to plan everything, the cost, marketing plans, design strategies and everything that goes into a business, but all in all, some good old common sense is also very welcome in those situations. And be human! Whether that’s working with your colleagues or suppliers, it’s worth a lot and costs nothing to treat others as you’d wish to be treated yourself. What do you predict as a big seller for Christmas? It’s hard to choose. I think a few will do very well. The toy pram, toy chest, wheelbarrow, alphabet blocks and grand prix racing car: they’re all such lovely toys. What’s up next for ooh noo? We have some exciting new products coming, but that will be after Christmas, so watch this space. Other than that, as a business I hope to maintain steady growth, which will see us gain a more international supply chain and resources. Exciting times are on the horizon for sure! ooh-noo.com
