Keep them close Introducing You can’t hold your baby all the time. Even though you may want to. CUDL™ makes it easy to keep baby close and secure, all while keeping your hands free. It’s comfortable and customisable with mesh fabric, padded shoulder straps and waist belt and the magnetic buckles ensure an easy and secure attachment. Keep baby facing in and snuggled up starting with an integrated infant booster for newborns, which then easily unzips as your child grows. As baby wants to explore the world, have them face out (up to 18 months) or switch to backpack mode (up to 36 months) for growing toddlers. Find out more at nuna.eu

inspired styling and festival look, on page 52. On a somewhat less glamorous note, this issue we’ve decided to tackle the dreaded car seat with our easy-to-follow Buyer’s Guide – set to demystify all confusion! This advice-led feature will have you understanding what you need in minutes, plus they’ve really come a long way since my day, now uniting safety and style; see for yourself on page 62. If that’s not enough kit for you, then don’t miss our travel buggies special. If you’re off on your jollies this summer break and in need of a trusty lightweight four-wheel companion, head to page 60, where we (literally) weigh up the best on the market. Last, but by no means least, this issue’s competition prize has me dreaming of the beach. We’ve teamed up with Cary Arms & Spa on the south Devon coast to offer a luxury two-night stay. There’s really only one way to start this… and that’s with a big emphatic welcome to Baby Sussex; based on the size of my inbox, Archie is sure to be the talk of the town for some time to come. And what better excuse to throw an extra shopping page into the issue? We have pulled together a fine selection of Windsorworthy pint-sized pieces that wouldn’t look out of place in Archie’s wardrobe, on page 36. There’s more than one proud Harry in this edition, though, as we had the opportunity to catch up with dad of two, musician and dancer, Harry Judd. He shares his fatherhood fails, London hot spots and the importance of honest parenting with us for our My Essentials column, on page 39. Like most, I’m ecstatic to see some sunshine, and the first way to celebrate the season has to be with a picnic. I’ll definitely be trying infant nutritionist Alice Fotheringham’s squashed picnic ciabatta; check it out along with some scrumptious weaning recipes for yourselves on page 84. If you’re avec bump during these summer months and find yourself in a what-to-wear quandary, then Antonia O’Brien’s fashion feature is just the ticket – nailing the western-

Where were you born? I was born at Crawley Hospital in West Sussex. Worst trend fad you’ve ever participated in? I rocked a mullet during my uni days. Big chunky fringe, leading back to a messy spike, and below shoulder length down the back. It rocked (at the time). Favourite thing about summer? Not being cold! And everyone just being generally cheerier. And an Aperol Spritz. Chloë art directs the festival shoot on p.44

Made from 100 per cent stainless steel and fully recyclable, these stimulating sensory toys are perfect for little hands to grip and chew on, and can even be put in the dishwasher. yummikeys.com

Baby news roundup KATE FREUD Editor-at-large
W
hen it comes to baby style, I definitely find myself leaning towards a more pared-back look – especially in those early months when you’re so tired you can’t see straight, and the simpler, the better. Gray Label perfectly taps into the unassuming yet stylish trend, and, designed for mini minimalists, the 100 per cent organic cotton collection features everything from babygros and beanies to cardigans and simple trews, from newborn up to one year old.
SUMMER LOVIN’
With summer just around the corner, a healthy dose of vitamin Sea is what we’re all in need of, and I, for one, can’t wait. With matching swimsuits all ready for the girls, this year it’s the boys’ turn for a treat, so I’ll be splashing out on Sunuva’s matching men’s navy Shrimpy swim shorts, £65, for my husband, and the boy’s version, £39, for my son Jago. What’s not to love?
Available in delicate hues of dusky pink, grey melange, blue grey and cream, why not mix and match baby’s wardrobe? gray-label.com
FLIPPING CUTE
When it comes to holiday footwear for babies, you can’t get much cuter than the Mini Pets collection from Havaianas. Available in his and hers animal designs, in teeny tiny sizes with a heel strap so you won’t lose them, they make me broody just looking at them.
A SKIN THING
Like many babies, my youngest, Willow, now one, has suffered from tricky, eczma-prone skin since birth, and we’ve tried endless lotions and potions without success, until now… the new Mustela Skin Soothing Pyjamas are nothing short of miraculous. Designed for babies with atopic skin, these groundbreaking pyjamas infused with sunflower oil, avocado and vitamin E significantly reduce itchiness, improve sleep patterns and leave skin noticeably softer. Plus, they last for up to 20 washes too.
UPF 50+ swim shorts £39, sunuva.com
Mustela’s unique skincare infused babygros not only soothe baby’s irritable skin, but promise parents a good night’s sleep too. Available in two sizes: six to 12 months: £48; 12-24 months: £50, mustela.co.uk

From the at-times daring maternity outfits to the new royal’s unconventional labour choices, the pregnancy has well and truly captivated the globe. Born at 5:25am on Monday 6 May 2019, and weighing a very healthy 7lb and 3oz, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor made his eagerly-anticipated arrival. Making his first public appearance in St George’s Hall Windsor at the mere age of two-and-a-half days’ old, a glowing Prince Harry and Meghan looked overjoyed with their baby son. Baby Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne, in beaming mother Meghan’s words, has the ‘sweetest temperament’ and is ‘very calm’. Our first view of the new royal baby was a glimpse of a precious head as he slept soundly in the arms of his father, who was present at his birth. During Meghan’s pregnancy, the Duke and Duchess had kept plans for the baby’s birth private. However, it was made clear that she would not be giving birth at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, like her sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge did for all three of her children. Although it was hinted that Meghan may give birth in the sanctuary of Frogmore Cottage, the Sussex’s Windsor home, it later emerged that she was whisked to a private hospital, possibly the Portland

in London, in secret on Sunday night. Although we don’t know when her exact due date was, it’s believed she was around a week overdue; so the couple must have been relieved when he finally made an appearance! Prince Harry gave an interview to BBC News later on in the day of the 6 May declaring the happy tidings. The birth was also officially announced in the conventional way for the royal family, with an easel outside Buckingham Palace. However, the couple also firmly cemented their position as the ‘most modern royals’ with a post on their joint Instagram account, @sussexroyal, announcing the baby’s name. This Instagram account was the first in the app’s history to hit 1m followers in just six hours, and their baby announcement gained 250k likes within two hours, the most of any royal account. Little does baby Archie know that he is undoubtedly the most talked about baby in the world this week, thanks to social media. On Wednesday 8 May 2019, our new royal met his great-

grandparents the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh for the first time. They’re pictured looking absolutely delighted to be meeting their eighth great-grandchild. Archie’s maternal grandmother Ms Doria Ragland is also pictured in this happy group. We’re so pleased to see that Grandma Ragland now looks to be very much a part of the Windsor family! The future King and Queen, William and Kate, also gave an interview expressing their excitement for the royal couple. The Duke of Cambridge lovingly, and jokingly, welcomed his brother to the ‘no sleep club.’ We’re sure they’ll be the most wonderful aunt and uncle, and we can’t wait to see pictures of Archie with his cousins George, Charlotte and Louis. In addition to their unconventional naming announcement, Meghan and Harry have showed that they plan to do things a little differently, in more ways than one. Often called the most revolutionary royal couple because of Meghan’s black and American heritage, baby Archie is believed to be the first mixed-race child born to a senior member of the royal family in centuries. Indeed, his background reflects a modern and inclusive Britain! Baby Archie has also been given an unconventional name for a royal. Although the bookies were accurate with their predictions of George and Charlotte’s names, they were left stumped with this one. The most popular predictions for his name were Alexander, Arthur, James, Philip and Spencer; all of which have connotations or namesakes within the British royal family. However, the couple settled on Archie, which means ‘brave’, ‘bold’ and ‘generous.’ His middle name of Harrison literally means ‘son of Harry’, we wonder where they got that from… but will he share his dad’s fiery red hair? Although the newborn could have been given the title of Earl of Dumbarton, or Lord Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, the couple have so far decided that he’ll modestly be known as ‘Master Archie.’ However, when his grandfather Charles becomes King, he’ll become ‘Prince Archie.’ It’s up to his parents whether they choose to use this title but judging by their thus-far unconventional way of doing things, we reckon he’ll stay simply ‘Archie’, which we think is rather lovely. During the little one’s first appearance, Meghan happily told reporters that she now has the ‘two best guys in the world.’ Well, little Archie, the world awaits you and we can’t wait to watch you grow up.

MY ESSENTIALS You’re working with WaterWipes on its new #ThisIsParenthood project to normalise honest conversations about parenting. Tell us why you wanted to be involved. Because I can completely relate to it; everything about this project rings true with what Izzy and I have experienced. The research from WaterWipes showed that two-thirds of UK parents feel like they’ve failed at some point – it’s definitely something we’ve both felt. We’ve always believed it’s important to talk openly and honestly. McFly are like that as a band and Izzy and I have been like that as a couple – we’ve always spoken about our fertility struggles and were lucky to be able to have a positive impact on other people. We

The musician and dancer talks parenting fails, brunch dates and the importance of honesty were excited to partner up with WaterWipes for the same reason – to talk about the truths of parenthood and hopefully help to inspire others to believe in themselves a bit more as parents. What do you think causes parents to feel like failures? We’re constantly comparing
ourselves to others, and in this modern age of social media that’s magnified even more. Social media shows perfect families and picture-perfect children, which probably makes others feel like they’re not doing a good job. I also think we’re not very good at opening up, so we don’t talk about how we’re feeling and how Sport fanatic Harry is a big golf enthusiast
hard we’re finding it. It’s not easy being a parent; it comes with lots of challenges; I think if you don’t share your struggles it can all build up and create a feeling of failure. As a dad, how do you combat those negative feelings? For me, it’s a short-lived feeling, but I try and just give my time to my children. I try and focus on them when I’m with them – something that’s important to me is not being too connected to my phone either. I listen to them – my daughter [Lola] is three so she’s really talking. We play, and I love taking them out and doing things together. That always makes me feel much better. You’re currently starring in Rip It Up in the West End and won Strictly eight years ago. Is dance a part of your children’s lives? Lola’s doing ballet and absolutely loves it! She discovered Angelina Ballerina and quickly announced that she wanted to have a go. Kit

loves watching and we’ve just signed him up too. We play a lot of music at home and it’s lovely dancing and singing around the house. Lola’s come to watch me dance a few times, which she thinks is fun. If they want to try some dancing [in the future], then hopefully Daddy can help them a bit! Does the same go for music? Both you and Izzy are musicians. Yes – I think naturally we’d like to try them on instruments, especially as Izzy comes from a very musical family. I think a lot of good values can be taught from learning musical instruments – it’s so important for a child’s development, creativity and also discipline with all the practice and exams. We certainly won’t be forcing them to do something they don’t want to do, but we’re keen to give them the opportunity and encouragement.
what are the ‘dad essentials’ you always have with you? We’ve used WaterWipes from the word go – I’ve always had sensitive skin and Lola’s inherited that slightly, so they’re ideal, whether it’s for nappy changing, food spillage, snotty noses or anything. Snacks are also essential, but only when necessary. I’ve always got water for them, and at the moment in the buggy we’ve got some bubbles and a bucket and spade, because there’s a sand play area at our local park. You’ve just got to prepare really, particularly when they’re babies as you can’t believe how many things you need to take out with you. It gets a bit easier as
Do you have a pushchair of choice? It’s a minefield! We’ve had a Bugaboo, an iCandy and a double side-by-side Mountain Buggy. And when it comes to clothes, any favourite brands? Izzy’s more into dressing the kids than I am. She always talks about Next and how many great deals it has. There’s a couple of places near where we live too, like JoJo Maman Bébé and Trotters. We like getting them something a bit smarter for special occasions too. If you’ve got some time to
yourself what do you like to do? I like sport – I enjoy playing golf and cricket with my mates. And I might go to the gym. And what about date night? Izzy and I are more of a brunch date kind of couple, so we’ll go out for food or maybe to the cinema. There are a couple of nice brunch places where we live – it’s a very London thing! What’s the best thing about being a dad? Everything – seeing your children in the morning, seeing their big smiles, the cuddles and kisses and things like when Lola has her hair in plaits or I’m waking Kit up from a nap and he’s all snuggly and rosy-cheeked. I just think, ‘Look at my children!’ It’s just lovely – until Kit does a massive poo and brings me back down to reality! INTERVIEW
• TA L K I N G W I T H E V A L O N G O R I A •
EVA AFTER s her son antiago reaches his first birthday en ast talks to va ongoria about her ourney into otherhood so far
n her TV and film career, Eva Longoria – the actress, producer, director, model, businesswoman and activist – has shown that she can be entertaining, outgoing, positive and charming, and equally adept at both comedy and action roles. This versatility – and these qualities – have also proven handy when it comes to parenting. After the arrival of her first child Santiago, in June 2018, the Texan star of Desperate Housewives, The Sentinel and Overboard said that, although she had been given the child she’d craved for so long, motherhood wasn’t going to calm her desire to embrace opportunities. It’s a line we’ve heard many times before, and more often than not all those good career intentions fade away into a contented period dedicated solely to seeing one’s baby flourish. But with Longoria, you sense she is coming at things from a rather different perspective. “It sounds strange, but these early days I could only say that motherhood has made me more determined to go out there and explore. That’s not because I am trying to get away from it,” she laughs, “but more because there feels a point to it all now. I have a real job to do, and it’s to show my little boy how amazing this world is.” That baby, young Santiago Enrique Bastón, who is rapidly approaching his first birthday in June, has certainly been born to parents with energy, drive and ambition in abundance. As well as being a polished actress, Longoria also runs her own production company, UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, has ongoing modelling deals with the likes of L’Oréal, Hanes and New York & Co., is a fashion designer and holds philanthropy very close to her heart. As for her husband, José Antonio Bastón is the 51-year-old President of Televisa, the largest media conglomerate in Latin America. And if any further evidence were needed that these are people with the determination to grasp any opportunity, consider the fact that within six months of their first (blind) date in December 2015, the couple were married! “I’ve always had a lot of energy and ambition,” says Longoria. “I like making the most of my time, and, going right the way back, that’s one reason I wanted to do a Master’s Degree, even when my acting career was in full flow. “I don’t believe we are put on this Earth to exist doing one thing, and that’s already a moral I want to pass down to Santi… to never settle for what you have, and to never believe you can only do one thing in life. With every passing year, I am still finding new projects that I want to explore, and I’m sure Santi will have that same frame of mind.” Longoria – who also runs a self-titled foundation dedicated to helping young Latina

women living in the US – grew up the youngest of four sisters in a Mexican-American family. She was a keen student and got a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology at A&M University in her native Texas. Of the red carpets and flashbulbs that have become part and parcel of her life, she says: “I have never taken all that too seriously, and I wouldn’t want my son to fall into the traps that I know are there. A lot of it is superficial; a lot of it is how you look, not who you are. For instance, I grew up with so many complexes about my appearance. I felt very unattractive and out of place, even in my own family. “Over the years, I’ve kept having to explain to people that I grew up as an ugly duckling – my sisters were gorgeous blondes with pale skin; friends would say to my mother: ‘Your other daughters are so beautiful, who’s this strange girl?’ I would have to insist that I wasn’t adopted! “The fact that I evolved into a model just goes to show how ridiculous the whole thing is and means I am in the right position to teach Santiago that there is more to life than what appears important.” She may be diminutive in stature, at just 5ft 2”, but Longoria is famous for a brazen, quirky sense of humour that she says she used as a defence mechanism for many years. She admits much of her parenting comes from some very strong women present in her childhood. “When I was young, I had something of an army of ladies to look up to for guidance and inspiration,” she says. “There was my mother, my nine aunts and my three older sisters, who taught me to be independent and determined. They showed me that if you worked hard and applied yourself seriously you could achieve all your dreams.” Longoria now sees parenthood as a way of giving back. “To have a child and to be able to care for him feels like the greatest gift. The ability to learn and to pass down knowledge is something that is so underrated. Let’s get out there and celebrate the world together!” And for someone who has lived for so long in front of the camera lens, Longoria isn’t about to let her fame change what should be a natural routine for her and her baby. “I don’t want to be a parent who hides my baby away,” she says adamantly. “I am so proud of him, and I want to show him off to the world just like any other mother would.” Indeed, Longoria has decorated her Instagram feed with some touching pictures of her new arrival, notably one in which Santiago is sporting a T-shirt with a print of her and Jose on the front. “It’s been a great ride, and you come to realise the gift of life is the most important thing you can ever give. It’s an incredible gesture, and we are, all of us, as parents, simply passing on what people have done for us. I think that’s beautiful.”
Longoria do esn’t plan to let her fame the way she affect parents her son Santi

A photo wall display, one for every month of Noah’s life. That’s tasteful, isn’t it? Or wildly indulgent? Big old foil balloon letters spelling out her name? Aren’t they a bit done? Why is everything glittery? Why is it all pale pink, pale blue or boring grey? Hmm. I’ll sleep on it. Noah’s first birthday is a mere six weeks away. We did it. We tended to a little shrubling and now we have a very busy, adventurous and jolly little rose tree. She is blooming. It is completely something worth celebrating. But a birthday party, in the traditional sense, seems absurd. Filed alongside weddings, cars and holidays, birthday parties for under-fives have become as much an outward display of affluence as anything else. And as such, they are also subject to the swinging pendulum of trends. Right now, according to my social media feed, first birthday parties run the gamut from a cake and candles in the garden all the

DIARY OF A MUM part 12
Yes, I know. It’ll only fit her for a nanosecond. But I’ll allow Noah (myself) this one birthday party indulgence. A party dress by Bonpoint is, quite simply, the cherry on top. Next year, it’s dungarees. Bonpoint Goldina Dress Golden Dots, £87, bonpoint.com
Joanna Ellner IS IN A BIRTH DAY QUAN DARY AS NOAH APPROACH E S H ER FIR ST BASH way to a bespoke village fete, complete with an artisanal burger van and rented farm animals. Spend too little and you’re cheap. Spend too much and you’re vulgar, a quasi-Kardashian.
In the aftermath of the Etsy rabbit hole, my strategy is this: avoid trends at all costs. In their place, we’ll be kickstarting some birthday family traditions, because traditions are the antithesis of trends. Trends come and go; traditions are built to last. And hopefully these will form the totems of our family life, ones that will become familiar to Noah, an anchor of our love for her. The first of which is afternoon tea. Heaven help the establishment that agrees to accommodate a one-year-old in close proximity to a tiered china cake stand, but as Noah grows in age, this tradition will grow with her. She’ll love it
at eight, hate it at 15 and adore it again at 22 (maybe). We will share stories about friendships, heartache and the first prick of love over tiny cucumber sandwiches. And, in lieu of a birthday card, which Noah cannot read nor grasp the concept of, we will write her a long, meandering email recounting all the precious little idiosyncracies she has now that, before long, will be forgotten, replaced with other precious idiosyncracies. As the years tick by, the emails will collect in the account we have made for her, ready for a kitchen table recital when the time comes. Still, a celebration of sorts is on
the agenda. In the Venn diagram of first birthday parties, when one side is a ‘self-contained-space-fornot-yet-walking-babies’ and the other is ‘something-approachingfun-with-a-bar-for-adults’, the middle becomes, quite obviously, ‘pub garden’. So that is where we will be, an outdoor terrace at a lovely local pub booked just for us with some (tasteful) bunting hastily tacked to the walls. Now I’m stuck in a party dress rabbit hole. I’m still determined to avoid trends, and will do what I can to avoid dressing Noah in 2019’s version of Coachella flower crowns. But I can’t promise anything.

The pushchair comes with a newborn pack, making it suita le or first strolls
s a family we seem to be constantly on the move, so alongside our everyday buggy we’ve always had a lightweight travel stroller to join us on our travels. But with our trusty Maclaren on its last legs after five years of service, we decided an upgrade was in order for our youngest, Willow, and decided to take the plunge with the Babyzen YOYO+.
THE LOWDOWN The thing that sets the YOYO+ apart from a run-of-the-mill buggy is its instant one-handed fold mechanism and its compactness when collapsed. Once you get the hang of it, you can collapse it with very little trouble and it’s easy to sling over your shoulder with an adaptable strap. One of my favourite features is that you can also fit it in the overhead storage of an aeroplane – and anyone who has ever walked miles through an airport with young children sans buggy will agree it’s worth the money for this alone!
GOOD LOOKING? Yes, very much so. It features a streamlined, slick black frame, and the hood, seat and footmuff are available in a variety of colours. In addition to the traditional shades of red, black and grey, you can also choose from ‘Peppermint’, ‘Taupe’ and ‘Ginger’. We went for the ‘Ginger’, which is more of a pink than an orange – I love it for a girl.
The sheepskin-lined footmuff keeps Willow cosy
Kate loves the streamline look of the Babyzen YOYO+
PRACTICALITY AND DRIVABILITY I think it’s fair to say that all parents will love pushing the Babyzen YOYO+ around. In techy-terms, the four-wheel suspension combined with the lightweight frame means it can be steered one-handed. Manoeuvring through shop doors or on and off buses is a breeze. Having said that, I would feel a little uneasy using it in windy weather for fear of it blowing over. I know many parents who use the YOYO+ all year round, and I can see the attraction of doing so, but personally I find it too light for that. When Willow was small we used the Newborn Pack, which adapts the pushchair to a lie-flat, parent-facing position that’s suitable from birth. But she’s now in the front-facing pushchair, which is for babies aged six months and upwards.
cosiest winter excursions, and the stroller comes with a raincover for soggy days. The five-point harness is easy to use and has padded shoulder straps for extra comfort, and everything is easy to remove and wash, too. The only downside is that it doesn’t have an adjustable handlebar. My husband and I are both 5ft 10in and we do find it comfortable enough to push, but if we were a few inches taller, it might be a little on the short side.
THE VERDICT I can completely see what all the fuss is about with the Babyzen YOYO+. It really is unlike anything else on the market, a pleasure to use day to day and a joy to travel with.

This nifty new stroller from Micralite really does have an ultra compact fold, only requiring one hand – and it even free-stands, saving space in the hotel room and beyond. According to Guinness World Records, the GB Pockit is the world’s smallest folding stroller. Impressive, right? When time is of the essence, its two-step fold is a godsend, making it quick and easy to open out and use. Once folded, the pushchair becomes a handbag-shaped package that can be flung over your shoulder or stowed away. Mini globetrotters will love features like the soft, padded lie-flat seat, multi-position recline and adjustable calf support, designed to keep them super comfy. The lockable front-swivel wheels and dynamic spring suspension provide a smooth ride, and the five-point safety harness keeps your precious one safe and secure. CAR SEATS
Buyer’s guide AS SILVER CROSS GE TS R E ADY TO U NVEIL ITS N EW CAR SAFE T Y COLLEC TION , Hamish McPhillips, TH E BR AN D’S CAR SAFE T Y MANAGER , OFFER S SOM E TOP TIPS ON BUYING YOU R FIR ST CHILD SE AT
n the UK, children must use car seats until they’re 12 years old, or over 135cm tall, so your relationship with car seats is long term. Here are my top buying tips for your first car seat:
I
THINK ABOUT HOW THE SEAT WILL BE USED For a newborn, there are two main options when purchasing a first stage car seat – a traditional infant carrier or a multi-group 0+/1 combination car seat. An infant carrier can easily be removed from your car, used to carry your baby from home to the car or used with your pram. An ISOFIX base can be purchased separately, to make it easier to attach and remove the infant carrier from your vehicle. Depending on the rate of growth, infant carriers only tend to accommodate your baby for around the first year. On i-Size seats, look for height ranges given in centimetres. The largest infant carriers can accommodate babies up to 87cm in height. Remember, however, the maximum baby weight limit for an infant carrier is 13kg. The other popular option is a multigroup 0+/1 combination seat, which will accommodate your child for longer, normally up to a maximum of 18kg or, with newer i-Size seats, there’s a maximum height limit of 105cm. Both of these weight and height limits represent a typical four-year-old.
62 | baby-magazine.co.uk
In addition, many of these seats rotate making it easier for parents to get their little ones in and out at an optimum position, to ensure everything is installed correctly. These seats are heavier, due to the extra structure needed to accommodate a larger child, and don’t detach to fit onto your pram. Don’t forget, it’s not recommended to leave your baby in any car seat for longer than two hours.
WHAT IS I-SIZE? You’ll be sure to come across the term “i-Size”. i-Size is a term taken from the latest European child car seat safety regulation (Regulation 129). It was introduced in 2013 to offer better compatibility between the child and the car seat, using the child’s height. The previous regulation was purely based on weight, not accounting for the varying stature of children. Due to the loading limits of ISOFIX points in the vehicle and the adult seat belt, there are still upper weight limits for the child seat, but the height range is intended to fine tune the sizing. This new regulation also includes additional side impact testing, the latest crash test dummy technology and the requirement for rearward facing for longer (until up to 15 months of age).
ISOFIX MAKES LIFE EASIER AND SAFER ISOFIX makes fitting your car seat easier and reduces the chance of misuse. The latest
studies have shown that the risk of incorrectly fitting the seat is 2.3 times lower with ISOFIX than when using an adult seat belt. Adult belted seats are safe when fitted correctly, but often take time and can loosen, meaning more regular checks are required. We always recommend using ISOFIX where possible, which is why all four seats in Silver Cross’s new car safety collection can be used with ISOFIX. ISOFIX fittings were introduced in cars as early as 1997 and became mandatory for all new vehicles from 2012. Your child car seat brand will be able to supply a full list of compatible vehicles. Alongside the ISOFIX fittings on the seat, there should also be either a support leg or top tether to ensure the child seat is completely secure.
CHOOSE A SEAT WHICH CAN GROW WITH YOUR CHILD During the first 12 months, your baby’s weight and stature will change significantly. Look for car seats which offer a good amount of padding and have inserts to give a good snug fit at first, but can be adjusted and removed as your baby grows. These seats offer the best fit, comfort and

product in a nice calm environment before your little one arrives.
GET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR CAR SEAT
When researching, you may come across products with five-point or three-point harnesses. The three-point harness systems can be easier when putting your baby in the seat, but they aren’t as effective at managing energy in an accident due to the lower number of contact points. That’s why we’ve designed all our new cars seats with five-point harness systems. Generally, the more contact points the better and, as a guide, Formula One drivers and fighter jet pilots are secured in using six- or seven-point harnesses.
Although you can’t try your baby out in the seat, as you’ll be buying before they arrive, we’d always recommend visiting a store to check the fittings and functions on the child seat. Whilst vehicle fitting lists are available, there’s nothing like physically trying the seat. Make sure you and your partner are comfortable with how to install and remove it – don’t rely on YouTube videos, give it a go yourself! It’s best to get familiar with the

aming days are becoming increasingly popular amongst new parents who want a non-religious ceremony to mark the arrival of their child, plus it’s a wonderful chance to get together with close friends and family to introduce them to your new addition. Because this is a secular ceremony, you can choose to lead the celebrations yourself or organise a trained ‘celebrant’ who can help – visit humanism.org.uk for more on this. Aim to make the day individual with personalised readings and musical accompaniments in the form of a harpist, singer or bespoke playlist. Ask the godparents or ‘mentors’ to write their own promises to your little one. Have a clear theme in mind for the celebrations – you might want to pick a colour such as pink, blue, yellow or grey, or try a classic book or nursery rhyme theme, such as Beatrix Potter, Teddy Bears’ Picnic or The Velveteen Rabbit. Use this to coordinate your table décor and food and drink – after all, it’s all about the details. There will no doubt be lots of gifts for baby, but why not also gift your guests to thank them for coming? Small votive candles, pretty chocolates and silver charms all make adorable favours, making it a truly celebratory day that everyone will remember. Finally, create a special ‘time capsule’ box for baby by asking guests to place handwritten notes, photographs or small Paper plates (pack of eight) trinkets inside. PROFILE
EVERY ASPECT OF A DESIGN SHOULD BE DELIBERATE AND CONSIDERED FOR ULTIMATE FUNCTIONALITY ‘must-have’ list for parents worldwide. Today, not only do they have the signature Bumbo Floor Seat, designed for babies up to a year old, but also the Multi Seat, created for babies and children up to three who can already sit, and the Booster Seat for 18 months and up. The soft but durable foam used to make these seats has also been crafted into a brilliant Elipad to protect knees during all those times when new parents are kneeling by the bath or changing nappies on the floor. All the products come in gorgeous colours varying from pastel pink and minty green to neutral grey, complete with safety harnesses. Today, over one million Bumbos are sold across the world, with everyone from Kim Kardashian and Chris Hemsworth to Angelina Jolie proudly photographing their offspring ‘sitting’ for the first time in them. Bumbos continue to be made in Rosslyn, the centre of South Africa’s automotive industry, with Joe living north of South Africa’s capital of Pretoria, in close proximity to the factory. As CEO at Bumbo, Joe has always taken a very hands-on approach to his work. “I am involved in everything from the design of the products and packaging to the manufacturing of the Bumbos and even how they are
marketed. It’s hard to divide my time as I find every aspect of the business equally important.” But he, more than anyone, savours the reward. “My passion lies in conceptualising an idea and turning it into a finished product that is useful for parents and that kids love.” Joe says, “I go to consumer shows whenever I get the opportunity, as I believe it to be the most direct way of receiving feedback from consumers. And this industry is driven by the needs of parents, so no sales person can promote your product better than a happy mum or dad.” When he’s not travelling or working, Joe loves the outdoors, spending time with family and friends, hiking, cycling and gardening. So what does he put the success of the business down to? “I follow the principle associated with 20th-century modernist architecture and industrial design, that the shape of an object should primarily relate to its intended purpose. In simple terms, every aspect of a design should be deliberate and considered to achieve ultimate functionality.” With more products in the range set for release at the end of 2019, there’s no doubt many parents across the world would attest that these simple designs transform those sleep-deprived early years with your children. And we’re sure baby would agree too.

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
with NEEV SPENCER
hope you’re enjoying this glorious time of year… I just returned from a week’s babymoon in Tenerife, which was absolute pure bliss (see for yourself on page 90). A few things really got us through our travels this month: the Silver Cross Jet lightweight buggy was great for the airports and sleepy toddler moments, plus it easily folds into aircraft cabin size! I’ve also been finding that the heat has been really messing with my body lately; cooling gels and non-tight maternity wear have been so helpful at combating this. As I go into my seventh month of pregnancy, I’m relishing the time I have with my toddler Genevieve. I feel everything is going to change soon and I’m trying to make sure I give her as much of my focus as I can. In order to save time, convenience is everything for me right now. Our new magenta Toyota AYGO city car has been a godsend for all the local nursery trips and supermarket runs, and with a new car, I decided it was time to upgrade Genevieve’s car seat too. After much research, I went for Joie every stage 123 fx, which is a Mothercare exclusive. She’s loving it! That pesky pregnancy insomnia and evening achiness has now kicked in, so I’m going to up my weekly pregnancy yoga to try and relieve my body and mind of some of these new stresses. And in the meantime, the Bloom and Blossom Night-Time Ritual Trio range has been working wonders... See you next month, and don’t forget to head to baby-magazine.co.uk for my online column for handy Pregnancy Yoga tips and my make-up must-haves in the heat…

The constant presence of cortisol in your body uses up B and C vitamins, so you can become depleted of these nutrients and may need to boost them through your diet or take a supplement. Stress may also suppress your immune system, deplete your vital nutrients, slow down your metabolism and impede your body’s ability to repair itself.
Research has shown that having high levels of cortisol in an expectant mother’s body over a long period of time is detrimental to the developing baby as it can cross the placenta. Unborn babies who are repeatedly exposed to high levels of stress chemicals can then have their own stress response system distorted, so that they become unable to regulate themselves. It is easy to see why a baby who STRESS ON YOUR BABY has been severely stressed before their birth The developing foetus is especially susceptible may be difficult to settle and comfort once to stress chemicals and hormones from the they have been born. 5 TIPS FOR RELAXATION For me, true relaxation is when the mind and body are completely calm. Here are my top tips on how to truly relax during pregnancy: • Make time. Only you know your schedule, but it’s up to you to make time for yourself. Clearing at least 20 minutes a day from your schedule can make all the difference. • Learn a stress reduction technique. Each person has a technique that works for them; try as many as possible and see what suits you. Breathing, mindfulness, meditation, or simply being still are some of the ones you can try. • Find some space. Try and get away from everything once in a while and have some time alone with just you and your own thoughts. • Get out into nature. Just getting out in the fresh air, sitting and listening to birdsong and your surroundings can be really restorative! • Go to bed early. People really underestimate the value of a good night’s sleep! It has tremendous effects on both your hormonal balance and your body in general.

BREASTFEEDING
The Breastfeeding Café with
PROFESSOR AMY BROWN
THIS ISSUE WE ASK:
WHY DOES BRITAIN HAVE SUCH A LOW BREASTFEEDING RATE?
A
lthough we have public health messages encouraging mothers to nurse, breastfeeding rates in the UK are some of the lowest in the world. There are no physiological reasons for differences between countries. It comes down to a simple lack of investment and support for breastfeeding. Although breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always easy, and it works best when women have practical and emotional support. But cuts to breastfeeding services mean that new mothers aren’t always getting this. Meanwhile, the formula industry spends around 9 billion US dollars each year promoting its products, often in ways that are misleading, like suggesting a specific brand will assist sleep. Many women turn to their family for support, but over the last few decades we have lost a lot of generational knowledge around how breastfeeding works. In the 1950s, formula milk was promoted as being better for your baby, and very few women breastfed past the early weeks. This means older family members sometimes don’t know how to best support breastfeeding and formula is often offered as a solution. We also, as a society, believe a lot of myths about feeding, such as formula

helping with sleep (it doesn’t); babies should be in routines, but adults don’t eat and drink to a routine, so why would a baby? Or babies are feeding too much – this is normal and helps build milk supply. Unfortunately, many women worry about these things and think they need to give formula top-ups or feed less often, which can mean their milk supply drops. Public understanding of breastfeeding also isn’t great. Although mothers are permitted to breastfeed anywhere by law, some still think they shouldn’t do it in public. Feeling anxious, they may opt for a bottle instead. Returning to work can also lead women to stop nursing early. Often workplaces don’t have policies in place and women struggle to find time to express, feel embarrassed or don’t know where to store their milk. For all of these reasons, women may give their baby formula milk before they are ready to. If we want breastfeeding rates to increase, we really need the government to invest in greater support, education and protection for mothers in public and in the workplace. FEEDING SUPPORT • Work on getting your latch right. It shouldn’t hurt. If it does, ask a midwife to help. • Babies breastfeeding frequently is normal and helps build your milk supply. • If you are in any pain, your health professional or the National Breastfeeding Helpline can help. Treatment can make all the difference. • If you need medication and are unsure if it is safe, the Breastfeeding Network have factsheets and a pharmacist to answer your queries. • If you have questions, or want support, pop along to a breastfeeding support group. Ask your health professional for details, or search on social media. • Remember you are legally entitled to breastfeed anywhere you want in the UK. HEALTH
TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT
REFLUX
The sisters discuss the distressing digestive condition’s symptoms and solutions ll babies cry, some seemingly all the time. But when does crying become so excessive that there might be a medical reason for it? Reflux is when the muscle at the top of the stomach is weak, allowing milk and stomach acid to travel up the oesophagus. It’s usually a mild occurrence, causing vomiting or ‘possetting’ after a feed. For most, it doesn’t cause serious discomfort. However, when it’s severe it can be painful and even lead to worrying weight loss. Sometimes milk travels all the way up, causing them to vomit often, losing most of their feed and resulting in poor weight gain. Silent reflux is when acidy milk goes up and down the oesophagus. This can be very difficult to diagnose, as although these babies tend to scream all the time, they won’t vomit more than normal babies. Silent reflux is often confused with colic, as the symptoms are similar. Babies with both are clearly uncomfortable, but babies with reflux tend to scream all day long, while colic tends to affect babies more in the evenings. Colic can often be eased with over-the-counter remedies such as Infacol, and babies tend to grow out of it between 10 and 12 weeks. Many paediatricians believe we see reflux more nowadays because we increasingly put infants to sleep on their backs. ‘Refluxy’ babies are more comfortable on their fronts, yet putting babies to sleep on their backs greatly reduces the risk of cot death. So, as tempting as it might seem to let your baby sleep on her front, don’t. Most reflux can be diagnosed by a GP or paediatrician simpy by talking to

the mother and examining the baby. In severe cases, tests can confirm a diagnosis, but these are somewhat invasive, so they aren’t done routinely. The treatment for both reflux and silent reflux is the same. Many cases will need only simple measures, but others will require prescription medication – commonly Ranitidine or Omeprazole – to reduce acid production. It may help to keep your baby upright during and after feeds, and to pop her in a bouncy chair for naps. Feed little and often, particularly if she’s vomiting a lot. You can get feeding thickeners or special formula designed for babies with reflux. It is sometimes linked to cow’s milk-protein allergy, especially if your baby also has eczema, so your GP might suggest a cow’s milk-free formula. If you’re
breastfeeding, try excluding dairy from your diet for at least two weeks. Early weaning may help too; paediatricians recommend weaning ‘refluxy’ babies between four and six months. Other options include dummies, which encourage the baby to suck the acid back down, while cranial osteopathy can calm infants. Gentle pressure or a warm pad on the tummy can also ease discomfort. By coating the digestive tract, Gaviscon and sodium alginate will reduce symptoms. As miserable as it can be for both of you, the vast majority of infants grow out of reflux within the first six months or once established on solids, even without treatment. Most ‘refluxy’ babies will go on to be robust, happy toddlers who are full of beans and ready to explore the world!

Try blending with other fruits that are in season over the summer, such as cherries and blueberries. This is also delicious frozen in blobs on a piece of baking paper, or you can make it into ice-lollies. INGREDIENTS:

SQUAS H E D PICN IC C I A B AT TA Suitable from 8 months Makes one loaf Preparation: 30 minutes
A great recipe for kids to assemble – fully load a ciabatta loaf with favourites like prosciutto, artichokes, peppers, spinach and mozzarella. INGREDIENTS
• long ciabatta loaf, sliced in half lengthways • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar • 1 teaspoon grainy or Dijon mustard • 3 teaspoons green pesto • 2 big handfuls of rocket or spinach
• 250g roasted red pepper from a jar • 4-6 sundried tomatoes, finely sliced • 125g ball mozzarella, cut into slices • 50g Parmesan, grated • 6 slices of roasted ham METHOD
Slice the ciabatta loaf in half lengthways and heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put the ciabatta loaf halves, crust-side down, on a large baking tray and drizzle with a little olive oil. Pop them in the oven for a few mins until just golden and lightly toasted. Put the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, mustard and pesto in a bowl, then whisk them together with a fork. Remove the toasted ciabatta halves from
the tray and drizzle the bottom slice with about half of the dressing. Arrange the rest of the ingredients in layers. Start with the rocket or spinach, then the pepper, sundried tomatoes, mozzarella and parmesan and ham. Drizzle over the rest of the dressing and pop the other slice of ciabatta on top. Press down on the sandwich to squash all the layers together. Wrap the sandwich in baking parchment and tie it together with a couple of pieces of string. Place a heavy baking tray on top of your sandwich and top it with weights or cookbooks. Pop it all in the fridge overnight or until you are ready to eat it. Cut and serve in slices for the perfect picnic snack.

TENERIFE
DJ Neev Spencer HIT TH E ISL AN D FOR A L AST TRIP AS A FAMILY OF TH R EE n all my years of holidaying in Europe, I had never visited Tenerife until last December, when my husband and I were in dire need of some winter sun. It was soon obvious why the Canaries are such a popular holiday destination for Brits. To jump on a plane for just over four hours and be in a tropical paradise is pure bliss. We decided Tenerife was the ideal location for our babymoon, with toddler Genevieve in tow too, and chose the impressive Ritz-Carlton Abama resort in the idyllic setting of Guía de Isora. Built across a cliffside, lying between fields of banana tree plantations, this property has been so cleverly designed. The hotel strikes a perfect balance between catering to adults and children. You can choose from adult-only villas and rooms, or families can stay in the main Citadel building, which is conveniently located close to all the restaurants, the main pool and the spa. We had a one-bedroom suite, which gave us ample space for the week. The décor is luxurious, but liveable, and you can request different views of the ocean, gardens or valley. Our veranda was the biggest outdoor space we’ve had in a hotel, and was well used, as Genevieve loved watering the plants each day. After breakfast, our days would entail a trip down to the private beach; the hotel runs half-hourly funiculars down the cliff, which is an experience in itself, adding to the fun-factor for Genevieve and a much easier option than walking

for a burgeoning pregnant lady like me! We would then spend some time at the main lobby area at midday to feed the thousands of Japanese Koi fish – a task that Genevieve loved! It was then on to a swim in the pool, followed by a lazy lunch at the kids buffet, where children can pick their own starter, main and dessert. Long afternoon slumbers in the room set us up for delicious dinners at one of the hotel’s 12 eateries, two of which have Michelin stars. Our favourite dinner was at the impressive El Mirador restaurant, whose tables overlook the ocean and are a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset and the locally-sourced seafood. As well as being child-friendly, the resort is certainly pregnancy-friendly too. There are buggies on standby to whizz around in, when your legs give up, and the spa is world-class. I indulged in its Naturally Nurtured Massage, which is tailored for expectant mothers. As working parents, you do feel that guilt, so to be away with our daughter for almost a full week was total bliss. Seeing her little face light up as she experienced so many new things is something I will take away with me forever. These precious moments as a family of three – soon to become four – are now permanently in my heart. British Airways operates regular flights from London Gatwick to Tenerife (ba.com). Amilla Fushi is lush compared to other islands and has a Miami Beach vibe
hen choosing a family holiday this year, we all agreed we wanted sun, sand and “to swim with fishes”, my six year old added emphatically. (She’s a huge fan of The Little Mermaid.) Rob, my husband, is a keen scuba diver, and both Chloe (aka Ariel) and Charlie (nine) love the water. The Maldives is renowned for its ocean life and safe snorkelling for kids, so after convincing ourselves that the 10-hour flight would ‘fly by’, we were off. After landing in Male, the seaplane takes about 35 minutes to reach Amilla Fushi in the Northern Baa atoll – a journey which affords fantastic views and a perfect introduction to the geography of the Maldives. The islands look like tiny meringues floating on the sea, according to Charlie. As we circled over our resort with its Miami-style water bungalows curving out into the sea, we saw how lush the island is compared to most, with its dense jungle where 1,000-year-old Banyan trees grow. The family-friendly Amilla Fushi, which means ‘My Island Home’, certainly lives up to its name. We are greeted off the plane by our very own butler Hamdy; every room on the island has their own Girl or Boy Friday, there to help with all those little details, from stocking the fridge with your favourite drinks to making sure you can download tunes to the portable speaker. The Sultan’s Village Kids’ Club proved popular
passageway to rooms for the children, including their own en-suite with outdoor rain shower. The large private family terrace has a decent-sized pool, which had Chloe and Charlie in a blind panic to find their costumes and plunge straight in. But the star attraction here is, of course, the sea. Private steps lead from our room straight down to warm, crystal blue waters. And the fish are everywhere: we only walked a few steps before we had exotic Butterflyfish swimming around our ankles. Chloe squealed with delight, and Rob made a dash to get out and explore the coral reefs, which are part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The dive centre is well-equipped with a friendly team who organised a trip for just the four of us in a glass-bottomed boat as an introduction to the water on our first day. As well as arranging daily snorkelling expeditions just off the shoreline, the team sorted Charlie out with paddleboarding, and myself and Chloe with a kayak, whilst Rob enjoyed several dives, even swimming with two Hawksbill turtles. Bucket list activity ticked for him! After the sea, the other star of Amilla is the fantastic Sultan’s Village Kids’ Club, a huge space with a palmtree-fringed playground, a shallow, shaded pool and an indoor ball pit, as well as lots of other equipment. There’s a daily programme of well-thought-out activities aimed at four- to 11-year-olds, from treasure hunts to pizzamaking and beach games. The beach football got a big thumbs up from Charlie. We happily left our two at Sultan’s a few times during our week-long stay whilst we indulged in the world-renowned Javvu Spa, nestled in the tropical forests. There’s a yoga
pavilion, fitness centre and meditation zone, and we spent an idyllic afternoon enjoying a couples’ body massage. There’s plenty to do on the island, but nowhere ever feels busy or crowded. One evening we all cycled around it and came across the immaculate tennis courts hidden in the forest. We had a great game of family doubles whilst the sun started to set, and excitingly, there was a famous female tennis star knocking up on the very next court, so I felt slight pressure when serving underarm to Chloe to get the ball over the net! There’s plenty of choice in terms of dining, with The Bazaar offering four restaurants with international menus, including a varied selection for the kids. There’s also the worldrenowned Feeling Koi restaurant at the end of the jetty, offering sublime Japanese. But our favourite thing to do in the evening was to eat at the fish restaurant on the beach, with the waves lapping the shore and Chloe and Charlie excitedly listing all the fish they had seen that day. With their bare toes tickling the soft white sand, Rob and I could just sit back and take in the setting sun… what a blissful way to end a day at our home from home. Elegant Resorts is offering seven nights at Amilla Fushi from £7,995 per family. elegantresorts.co.uk Daily snorkelling trips were a highlight

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MONTESSORI!
It may seem like a modern teaching style, but would you believe that Montessori education is celebrating its 100th birthday this year? The child-focused method was set up by Maria Montessori to encourage leadership, independence and curiosity in children. This was reflected in the ‘Space to Grow’ garden that was specially created for this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show to mark the centenary. Many happy returns! mariamontessori.org

BUSINESS
The award-winning SnüzPod was the beginning for Mark and co-founder Paul SnüzPouch sleeping bag £29.95, snuz.co.uk
SnüzCloud sleep aid £29.95, snuz.co.uk
Nursery shelves are part of the Snüz accessories range
INSPIRE What inspired Snüz? Snüz was first created following the success of SnüzPod, our multi-award-winning bedside crib. Our vision was simple: to create stylish and innovative baby sleep products that make a real difference to parents. One product which I feel sums Snüz up perfectly is our stylish baby sleeping bag, SnüzPouch. For years, parents including myself have been fiddling about unpoppering sleeping bags during the night whilst desperately trying not to wake the baby! SnüzPouch was designed to solve this, with a special nappy-change zip on the front to make nappy changes quick and easy, minimising disturbance and helping create a better night’s sleep for all! What was your background before you set up the business? The business was originally set up in 2007 by myself and co-founder Paul Maurice. Paul and I both come from business families, so it was inevitable that the business bug would bite! We met at Aston University; I studied marketing and Paul product design. After university, we both

MARK NICHOLLS The co-founder of Snüz talks nappy changes, inheriting business brains and rubbing shoulders with royalty gained graduate jobs, but it wasn’t too long before we had the urge to start our own brand. Just before the recession hit, we both quit our jobs, returned to the Midlands and created the business! It wasn’t easy in the early days, but eventually we grew the business to a level that would see our commercial director Rosie Pritchard and Chief Executive Roger Allen join. These days, the business has a completely different look and feel, and although it started with myself and Paul, it is very much an entity of its own in which we play a part Mark is a proud dad of two
together with Rosie, Roger and the rest of our amazing team! Describe a typical day for you There is no typical day at Snüz! But that’s probably the most exciting thing about it. Over the years, my role has evolved to cover multiple areas, but I’m pleased to be focussing solely on marketing now. On any particular day, I may be brainstorming ideas for a new campaign with the team, or be on set for a photoshoot. I love it all! What’s your advice to anyone wanting to start a business? My first piece of advice is to surround yourself with great people who share the same drive and determination as you do. Secondly, make
sure you set up doing something you enjoy and feel passionate about; there are lots of ups and downs, and it’s genuinely enjoying it that makes the downs easier to learn from and get over! What has been your proudest moment with the business? I have two... the first is creating and airing our first TV advert for SnüzPouch! The second is our Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the innovation category, which was spearheaded by our Chief Executive Roger Allen and our Company Secretary Lianne Bishop over a 12-month period. The award involved a visit to Buckingham Palace, where we got to meet HRH the Prince of Wales! Anything in the pipeline for 2019? It’s going to be a really busy and exciting rest of the year for the business: we have just launched our new baby sleep aid, SnüzCloud, which helps to soothe and settle babies back to sleep. And it doesn’t stop there: we also have a new launch planned for the end of the year... snuz.co.uk
