On cloud wine

From wine clubs and events to artisan food, Jeroboams Wine Merchant is the go-to for the finest reds and whites

Jeroboams started as a cheese -and-wine club run by founder Peter Rich. What started as a passion project soon ballooned into a business, with a shop opening in South Kensington in 1985, specialising in quality cheeses, oils, vinegars, and wines. Subsequently the awardwinning Jeroboams has opened 10 shops across London, and has been recognised as D ecanter ’s Best London Multi-Store multiple years in a row. Having always focused on working with small family producers for exquisite wine, in recent years it has broadened its fine food offerings, in addition to hosting events in London’s most esteemed venues, such as Battersea Power Station, as well as local wine tastings.

FAN FAVOURITES

Jeroboams supplies wines to the finest restaurants in London. It has built a reputation as an industry leader, resulting in an impressive list of wineries for whom Jeroboams is the UK importer, including Moss Wood (Margaret River), Achaval Ferrer (Mendoza) and Podere Le Ripi (Tuscany).

people are among many residents and members of the community who count on Jeroboams for a g reat bottle of something and good conversation whenever they pop by.

CELEBRATING CHELSEA

With the Chelsea branch celebrating its first birthday, manager Clarence Tan, shares his journey with Jeroboams.

How did you start in the wine industry?

I’ve worked in the wine industry for a while now. I used to manage a restaurant for the National Theatre, and I had my own private dining company with a co-partner – she was the chef and I looked after the wines.

Located in some of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods including Knightsbridge, Holland Park and Belgravia, Jeroboams has amassed several wellknown fans from sports stars to royalty and popstars. These

When did you join Jeroboams and why?

I joined Jeroboams in 2022 after a moment of clarity during the Covid-19 pandemic.

I realised I wanted to pursue something I felt truly passionate about. Jeroboams was my local wine merchant in Knightsbridge. I enjoyed the tasting room, and I had held a few events there in the past. It seemed a great company to work for and to enhance my passion and knowledge of wine with. I loved it so much, I ended up working there, on Walton Street, a stone’s throw away from where I live.

WINE NOT? MANAGER OF THE CHELSEA BRANCH, CLARENCE TAN

What’s the best thing that’s happened to you at Jeroboams King ’s Road?

One of the best things is the opportunity to host numerous fantastic dinners and tasting events. It’s been incredibly rewarding to curate these experiences and see the enthusiasm of the customers who attend. Not only do these events showcase our exceptional products, but they also foster a sense of community and connection among our clientele. The interactions and conversations that arise during these gatherings truly make them special, and it’s been a pleasure to be a part of creating such memorable moments.

What would you like customers to remember when they visit your shop?

I hope customers remember the exceptional service they

and eager to share their positive experience with others. Ultimately, I want them to remember Jeroboams as a destination where they feel welcomed, valued, and inspired to explore the world of fine beverages.

What are favourites for events and gifting to friends and family this summer season?

The most popular wine at the moment is from Hunter’s, a fabulous grower in New Zealand. Its classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a firm favourite amongst the shop’s clientele here in Chelsea. However, with it being wedding season, we’re getting a number of larger orders for champagne and English sparkling for special events.

If you were creating a hamper to take to one of the open-air events, what would you put in it and why?

A bottle of the Georges Veselle vintage champagne, some delicious handmade pâtés and English crackers.

I’ d also pop in some Torres truffle crisps as they ’re addictive! Oh, and why not try some champagne truffles? L
