New lights a hit for baseball club THE Bonbeach Baseball Club played its first match under lights last week. Last year Kingston Council committed $125,000 towards the construction of new lighting at the baseball club. At the inaugural nighttime game under the new lights, Bonbeach White went down to Bonbeach Blue 22-3. Bonbeach Baseball Club committee member Luke Scholes said the upgraded lights would help with training and night games. “Winter training is really difficult - it’s dark before players have finished work and school. Now we have an avenue to train at night,” he said. “The new lighting is up to Baseball Victoria spec. We are now capable of playing night games and we will lobby to host more night matches in summer.

“This outcome is due to the actions of lots of other people who have put in effort. The process of getting the lights was lobbied by a lot of members to keep the club being one of the top clubs in the council area.” The club is recruiting for new juniors and seniors players. Life saving home open THE new $4.5 million home for Carrum Surf Life Saving Club has been officially opened. The facility was built with $2.1 million in state government money and $2.4 million from Kingston Council ratepayers. The new clubhouse features expanded ground floor storage capacity, more change rooms, a firstfloor observation deck, additional office and dry storage space, and other improvements. Kingston councillor Cameron Howe said the new facility would help keep swimmers safe. “Carrum SLSC has had the highest metropolitan rescues in the past and the $4.5 million redeveloped clubhouse has more space to train, patrol and store, allowing volunteer and paid professionals to keep an eagle’s eye out for the safety of the public,” Howe said. “Further investment to enhance Carrum foreshore is planned in the new year to renovate the Beauty Spot, and indicatively from mid-year extend the popular boardwalk north, featuring 180-degree bay and river views at the gateway to the bay.”
