to you. from us

letter from the editor In the first published issue of Lulu Magazine, we explore the history and magnetism of “The History of the Teenager.” Lulu strives to capture the carefree attitude that can only be contained in the youthful uninhibitedness and reckless abandon a teenager possesses. Through flamboyant styling and candid coolness, we want our readers to embrace their inner delinquent and take a journey with us to bigger, better, and brighter adventures. We’ve taken the concept of the youth movement, “The Bright Young Things,” to a modern day setting to represent the ideas and lifestyle of the youth today.

This Side of Paradise. Photos by Cara Kelly With characters like Amory Blaine to draw inspiration from, who wouldn’t want to be a trustfund baby lounging around in a fabulous home? The concept for this editorial is to reference F. Scott Fitzgerald and the British youth movement “The Bright Young Things” to portray the luxury lives of the teenage elite and how they spend their mornings conducting the business of being extravagantly carefree.

This editorial explores the more mischievous and delinquent side of youth. Breaking and entering has been a part of youth movements throughout history. In this styled shoot, a group of kids are breaking into a closed arcade and roller rink to explore and embrace their inner delinquent. Everything was shot on 35 mm film as well as instant polaroids to even further the concept of illegality and found footage.

Just for Fun THE TOTALLY BEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING...SINGLE. Written by Chelsea Carter

In a world where promiscuity is reserved for your early twenties and everything onward is just one big, proverbial hat hanging on the rack of domesticated life, there is a murky gray area where the illusive and emotionally stunted single woman lies; unattached, casually sexting, and just too damn concerned about the earth-shattering decisions of tomorrow to worry about getting “a ring by spring.” The modern ladies of today are fleeing with reckless abandon from the ideologies set up for them by the dames of yesterday. The days of patiently sitting by the phone waiting for your flavor of the week to call are long gone. Single women everywhere are filling up their little black books and slipping into their little black dresses, ready to embark on the yellow brick road towards the better and brighter orgasms of tomorrow. With casual dating media like Tinder and OkCupid, the ground for sexual expansion is no longer confined to the wonderings of “could he be my Richard Gere” but has transformed into “could he be my next Warren Beatty?” This new wave sexual revolution comes not in a physical liberation, but a technological one, in the form of easy access booty calls at your fingertips. The outmoded concept of ladies needing a lasting connection and a promise of commitment has faded away, and the emotional higher ground has shifted in our favor. Women today aren’t expected to be wooed by cliche methods in order to be whisked away to bed, but rather clean sheets, a cute smile, and a central location to the nearest B line train. 39

While more and more women are becoming increasingly liberal with the number of their one night stands, on the contrary, these same ladies have decided to be more conservative with who they let through their emotional gates. Alexandra Kollontai, a passionate Bolshevik and women’s rights Policy Advisor, gave the metaphorical middle finger to Lenin and capitalist egotism by implying that sexual relations should be liberated from bourgeois possessiveness and did not need to be desperate or all-consuming. This liberation has broken the ties of its former repressive, ideological state and manifested itself in the free-loving sexual climate we know as hookup culture. Kollantai’s sexual utopia is a far call from the “netflix and chill” generation, but women today are making a valiant attempt to make eliminate the pain of intimacy and focus on, as Kollantai would say, “feeling the love.” She would be proud of the path that has been paved…minus the lack of equality between the sexes and the fact that she was a Communist; caring about the well being and emotions of another person is inherently positioned in those beliefs. But other than that, she’d be swiping right with the best of them. We are now entering a society that rejects the concept that women can either be single or happy, but embraces the idea that we can be “happily single. But whether you’re a traditionalist or an exhibitionist, there’s never any right way to pursue your romantic interests. Even though we’ve all got to admit; the new wave of acceptance and the popularization of making your feelings number one priority is pretty damn awesome. Power to the ladies and their “little ladies” and let the free love keepth coming.
