Feminine True Blue
“
Blue is the world’s favorite color, and perhaps the most versatile. The color can appear akin to a misty gray or a lagoon blue-green and everything in between, but one thing remains consistent: it’s stunning. And because it works equally well as both a statement color and an accent in a room, it’s no wonder designers love it so much.
Rich colors are typical of a rich nature. Van Day Truex
In setup we added pops of other colors so that the blue didn’t ever become tiring or stale. In the living room, blush pinks were brought out from the owners love of pink peonies that grow around her home. For additional seating, vintage brass tact chairs were covered in a cream fabric. Our Willow & Perch designers suggest to mix cooler shades with warm, so the warm pink accents in this room became the perfect complement for this rich peacock blue. This blue works so well with crisp whites and neutrals like sea grass. A wicker woven rug and creme curtains were added to this room with a light creme couch to compliment. Multiple plants bring a lightness to the room while keeping the subtle influence of natural green.

Help Your Space Come Alive Besides adding life to a space, and a breath of fresh air, plants provide the perfect pop of green to a room. According to Dr. Nancy Stone of Creighton University, a specialist in color psychology, “dotting thriving pot plants around your house could all deliver just the dose of green you need to feel better.” Many indoor plants might get a few hours of direct sun each day, but the angle at which the sun hits a window can be undependable. And natural light isn’t strong or long enough to grow herbs or vegetables indoors. If you have an indoor plant in low light, adding supplemental indoor plant lights can help it stay vigorous and blooming. If you are trying to grow off-season herbs or veggies, you’ll need a more formal setup, such as a table with grow lights suspende above. If you’re worried about taking care of plants, another option is to add faux plants to your rooms. This is less of a responsibility and still provides a beautiful green pop of color and life. Artwork showing flowers is another way to bring nature into your spaces. Opt for a more abstract or modernist take on a still life. Third and finally, cactus and succulents are hearty plants that will almost refuse to die. These are great choices for beginning plant elements as decorations.

Pastel Tones of Splendor Pastels are the ideal color choices if you want something subtle and want to venture beyond cream and beige. You can keep a room simple, with walls in one color, yet spice up the furnishings and accent pieces with patterns. Or take it a step further by
painting pale shades on some walls and bolder versions of the same color family on others. The subtle adaptability of pastels makes them beautiful color choices for any room, in any style.

Lighting Your Room Lighting is one of the most critical elements in interior design – not only can it enhance the overall quality of a room, but it can create flexibility and completely change the feeling of a space. It is so important to build layers of light– meaning overhead general lighting, accent lights, and portable lamps. We always want to create visual interest – something that adds a touch of magic to a space. That’s what lighting really is, right? – “a touch of magic.” Decorative lighting is so important! If you have a long hallway in your house that feels like a runway, we suggest hanging decorative lighting in place of typical downlights. Not only does it add interest to the hallway, but it brings the ceiling down and helps it feel more like a special room in your house – not just a connection space. Accent lighting is another great way to introduce light to a space. There are several ways to do this, one of which is to incorporate lighting into the architecture, such as cove lighting or undercabinet lighting. Another way is to add lighting to actual pieces in your home.

A Touch of Indulgence This vibrant hue can seem intimidatingly garish on the swatch card, but when grounded with black and white furnishings and a few traditional touches – a hit of chintz, a stately bust – it feels both playful and elegant. For a more modern look, continue the color onto the moldings and window frames.

Jewel tones of purple and teal really make a lady feel at home. Marcia Guenteza
Jewel tones are nothing if not energizing, something traditional spaces can often benefit from. Serious-leaning furnishings such as antiques, which tend to be heavy on the gravitas, are offset by cheery pink walls. An entryway, which sets the tone for the rest of the house, can be an especially impactful place to try your hand at an outside-the-box color. Jewel tones are never too much in a small space such as a powder room or a petite office, especially when the goal is to brighten up what could otherwise be a dark corner. Turquoise feels fresh and unexpected when blanketing millwork as well as walls. Grounded neutrals such as rich browns and complementary yellows pair particularly well with this hue.

Book Collections From brilliant bookshelves built into stairs to floor-toceiling libraries, these bookshelf ideas for living rooms, the study and beyond are just as inspiring as the homes that fill them. Fancy creating a clever book nook of your own? There are many fun and creative ways to create a bookshelf that looks like a designed piece of art. Why choose between a bookshelf or art on a wall, when you can have both? Leave an opening on the wall and display art in it to add dimension and visual interest. Style it with your favorite vintage treasures. Stack books both vertically and horizontally for an effortless sense of style. Who wants a bookshelf as boring as Beowulf? It’s easier than you might think to create a library with personality. In fact, books don’t even have to be the star of your shelf; you can design a space that highlights your favorite travel souvenirs or family photographs. Start with the perfect bookcase, arrange your books with stylish bookends, then add decor that pops. It’s important to arrange your books in a way that’s functional and pleasing to the eye. Stack some in piles and slide others in side by side. Try arranging by color or choose some new books with bright spines that will stand out. Consider size as well — place most tall books at the ends but include some throughout the shelf so things don’t look too perfect. And don’t forget the bookends!

Rich Black & Jewel Tones We’ll always love light and bright rooms, but there’s a place for darker spaces in our homes and lives too. Moody, black interiors are ideal for those days when you want to curl up with a good book or a classic flick and just unwind. And while a black (or really any darkhued) room can read masculine, you can counterbalance the manliness by subtly working in more-feminine hues like pale
pink or deep purple and luxe textures like velvet, satin, and faux fur. Though black, as a neutral, can balance out brights like orange and teal, it dials up the drama much more than its cousins beige, gray, and white. Paired with metallic accents, it will make one of the least sexy rooms in your house—the home office—a glam space you can’t wait to get to everyday.

Dynamic Floor Coverings An area rug in your living room adds a real dash of personality. As bright or as elegant as you choose, an area rug is a real opportunity to express yourself through interior design. However, as well as looking fabulous, an area rug is an incredibly practical addition to your living room. Dining areas tend to veer decidedly formal or casual, so the aim is to find the right balance of light and elevated. A nuanced mix of textures was key. “Whitewashed finishes can bring a lot of lightness to a space, especially on big furniture pieces. With a whitewashed dining table and a white caned sideboard, the dining space instantly had a very light feel,” our Willow & Perch director, Alyssa Tibor explains. Multipurpose spaces such as guest rooms provide the best canvas for experimenting with colors, patterns, and designs that might fall just outside of your aesthetic comfort zone. In these spaces, Alyssa suggests starting with details that captivate you. “Sometimes it’s about finding the small elements in linens and other pieces that speak to you as your guide. Our living room in Willow & Perch’s Inspo Room is a example how to incorporate area rugs into your decor. Alyssa Tibor explains, “We really strived for a lot of interesting textures, colors, and patterns here; we brought in a vibrant blue-striped rug, lots of patterned quilts and pillows, a pair of cane-and-bamboo chairs, and a petrified-wood side table that all shared a global look.”Come visit our Inspo Room to see and feel how this look was created.

Delicious Yellow If your kitchen doesn’t get much natural light or could use some visual warmth, yellow is the perfect choice: It’s the most luminous shade and not too far from white, but has the added benefit of chasing any chill. Use it to brighten up the space where you and your family gather, and fuel yourselves with a burst of sunshine. For a traditional look, try painting your walls a buttery yellow to add a warm glow to the room. Benjamin Moore’s Inner Glow and
Donald Kaufman Color Collection’s DKC30 are good options that will have a calming effect on your kitchen. Before settling on the perfect shade of yellow, assess the entire room. Figure out what color cabinets, countertops, backsplash and appliances you plan to use. If you’re only changing the color of your walls or cabinets, make sure the color you choose works with whatever else you have in the room.
Entertaining Having a drink station is a ultimate ‘do’ for those festive occasions and the often unavoidable spontaneous shindig. If you don’t have a bar cart, creating a similar space can easily be achieved using a tray on a stand or a spot on your kitchen counter. Willow & Perch offers a variety of barcarts in multiple sizes and finishes. We chose Minloe’s brass and marble drink cart to display in our Inspo Room. The marble racks are fantastic for maintaining order and tidiness, as well as keeping condensation from the ice bucket compartmentalized and easy to clean up. Reflective materials such glass or metal lend a bit of sparkle and gaiety when the lights are low. But don’t turn the lights down too low-you don’t want your guests to accidentally pour gin when desiring vodka. Add a small table lamp, votive, or tapers to brighten things up just a bit. Keep it easy by having glassware, ice, liquor, mixers, tools, and garnishes in view to encourage your guests to help themselves. We suggest using locally produced liquors in addition to more well known libations for an interesting variety. In addition to liquor, have wine and chilled champagne on hand. What could be more fun than a penguin shaped drink shaker. Silver mint julep cups will certainly give a flash of elegance to any entertaining occasion. Bridge wood sliced coasters help to keep all your furniture safe from condensation will providing a beautiful place for your guests to lay their drink.
