Dedicated to Cheltenham Job seekers looking for local jobs C
heltenham based company Jobs in Network launched JobsinCheltenham.co.uk last week - a website dedicated to Cheltenham and job seekers looking for local jobs. Founder and Director, Gordon McQuoid is a local entrepreneur with a strong background in recruitment. His passion is finding new and innovative ways to provide recruitment services for great value. McQuoid’s first recruitment role was with a high street agency in Cheltenham in 2003 - a position he took to like a duck to water. After a couple of years, having developed a real skill and affinity for recruitment and matching people with jobs and vice versa, he then took up a position with another local recruitment firm, this time focusing on technical and more senior positions in the Defence and Aerospace industry. It was this that later led him to set up his first business with a colleague. The two worked hard to build the company as
specialists in the Defence and Aerospace industry, finding highly skilled, Security Cleared individuals for clients around the country, and working with some of the country’s most esteemed engineering companies. McQuoid says “I got a real buzz and sense of satisfaction and accomplishment from running my own business. I learnt a huge amount in a very short space of time”. Now, having recently sold his shares to his business partner, he is focusing his energy on growing the Jobs in Network and its local online job boards services – with the aim to become the first place people go to when looking for a job. After months of hard work and planning, Jobs in Network launched JobsInCheltenham.co.uk on the 28th of September, the first of a series of local job boards to be rolled out in Gloucestershire and then the surrounding counties. Having seen how the online job board market was changing recruitment, it is something he had become increasingly passionate about. “I’ve wanted to
do this for a number of years now, dating back to 2005” says McQuoid, after recently finding some notes and research he did into the market some years ago. He adds “Now feels the right time to launch a service like this, as more and more people are using the internet to find jobs. Having a network of local job boards, dedicated to specific local areas, means people don’t have to trawl through lots of unnecessary jobs and know when they visit the site they will only find local jobs relevant to where they are searching”. The Jobs in Network believes it can offer local employers and recruitment agencies great valuefor-money services, making it straight forward for local employers and agencies to attract people searching for work in the area. Call: 01242 500 212 if you would like further details about advertising a local job or visit the website www.jobsincheltenham.co.uk to search for jobs in Cheltenham.

Royal Society of Chemistry Conference held at the Cheltenham Ladies’ College
How to influence licensing decisions Cheltenham Borough Council will be organising a number of workshops early in the new year on how to write effective licensing representations and would like to encourage people to register their interest now. The workshops will cover alcohol, entertainment, gambling, sex establishments and street trading licensing and will help local residents to better understand the rules that apply to licensing decisions and the role they can play in determining the outcome. Many applications have to be granted by law, unless there are representations against them. Equally, submitted representations have to be relevant and correct otherwise they cannot be considered. Louis Krog, senior licensing officer, said: "It is important that local residents are aware of their right to comment on licensing applications and equally
important that they know how to do so effectively. To facilitate this, the council intends to run a number of workshops for members of the public to help them understand more the rules that apply to writing effective licensing representations." Councillor Klara Sudbury, cabinet member for housing and safety said: ‘’As a resident of Cheltenham, you have the right and opportunity to input and influence licensing decisions that could affect you and your local community and we are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity for residents to learn how to influence licensing decisions in the correct way.’’ If you are interested in attending a workshop or would like more information, please register in advance by ringing 01242 77 5200 or email licensing@cheltenham.gov.uk

a future subject choice and as a potential career. The morning featured three lectures for 330 AS Level students. The University of Bristol’s Tim Harrison started the day with a bang as he gave an exciting and engaging demonstration of chemical explosions. Andy Chapman, also from the University of Bristol, followed with a very well received talk on the Science of Chocolate and the morning concluded with renowned Science writer Dr John Emsley’s ‘Molecules of Murder’, an exciting talk on
poisoning and forensics. The afternoon featured ‘A Chemical Delight’, a workshop given by Tim Harrison for 350 children from five local primary schools. Tim said, “Bristol ChemLabS and the Cheltenham Ladies’ College are greatly looking forward to working together again next year and hope to make this an annual event. We look forward to involving even more students next year and would like to thank the RSC for sponsoring the event.”

Rogue Trader Residents Warning in Cheltenham of Scam olice are appealing for information and reminding residents in Cheltenham to only use reputable companies when having work done on their property.
P
It follows an incident that was reported to police by a 63-year-old man who lives in the Pittville area of the town. At around 3pm on Friday September 23, three men called at his home offering to clear the guttering, he said they could do the job but no price was agreed. When they had finished this, they told the man that a lot more repair was required, they did not quote for the work and claimed they had carried it out, bringing the bill to thousands of pounds. They demanded the payment in cash and said they would return at a later date for it. DC Adrian Moore is investigating, he said: “The resident has done absolutely the right thing by contacting police. Thankfully on this occasion he has not been left out of pocket but this is so often not the case.

“I realise these individuals warned about a scam can be incredibly pushy but I after an elderly Bishop would urge people not to be Cleeve man fell victim to a intimidated. “Our advice is to never agree to work being carried out without checking the company’s credentials and getting a full quote. We would recommend getting at least three quotes from different companies in order to make sure you are getting a fair price.” Officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed these men operating in the area to get in touch. “We think there may be more people that have had sub standard work carried out on their property by these men for hugely inflated prices. We really need to speak to you. These men are criminals and need to be stopped,” said DC Moore. Two men have been arrested in connection with this incident. A 21-year-old man from Uxbridge, Middlesex and a 28-year-old man from Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire were both arrested on suspicion of fraud offences and have been released on police bail pending further enquiries until November.

thief.
Gloucestershire Police are urging residents to be alert to the scam.
Between midday and 12.30pm yesterday, Thursday September 29, a man called at the home of the 93-year-old. He claimed that he had moved in nearby and needed to change £100 for small denominations in order to pay a plumber and asked if the man could help.
Crime Prevention Officer for the county, Paul Francis, said: “This goes to show these people will try anything to trick innocent victims out of their money. These kinds of incidents are always so despicable because the offenders deliberately target the most vulnerable members of society.
“The matter is being thoroughly investigated and we are also urging members of the public to take extra care of their elderly neighbours simply by watching out for anyone suspicious loitering around or perhaps challenging someone you don’t recognise calling at an elderly neighbour’s house.” Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Gloucestershire Police on 101 quoting incident number 219 of September 29. LOCAL NEWS presence in every part of the county. Inevitably some people will be disappointed, but I can reassure everyone that even where a police station is closing, we will still provide a visible and accessible policing presence.
Gloucestershire Police Authority Confirms Future of More Police Stations
loucestershire Police Authority has made decisions about the future of four more police stations across the county.
G
Following a period of public consultation throughout February and March, the Constabulary announced the closure and sale of 13 stations earlier this year.
We have now opened 11 Police Points in areas where stations have closed, and further Police Points are due to open in the future.
Four other buildings required further discussion to take place to ensure that the best possible solution was found to reshape policing in Gloucestershire; increasing visibility and maintaining the best possible accessibility for the public.
With an £18m budget reduction over the next four years, the Constabulary has been working to identify where this money can be saved, whilst maintaining an excellent service to the public.
Initial proposals involved moving police
officers to the nearest large police station or moving the policing presence to a library or other public building to allow for the sale of the existing police station. In every scenario the communities will continue to have the same daily policing presence as before – just provided from a different base. After thorough consideration of all of the options presented by the communities affected, decisions have now been made in relation to each of the following stations: Bishops Cleeve – Police station to be closed and a Police Point opened in the village library. Cheltenham Road East – To remain open pending further consideration. Whaddon – Police station to close and Police Points to be set up in Folly House, Folly Lane, St Pauls and in the Whaddon, Lynworth and Priors Neighbourhood Project building, Clyde Crescent, Whaddon.
“We’re also very grateful to those bodies, such as Town Councils and the County Council, who have offered us space in their facilities to help us maintain that presence.” Chief Constable Tony Melville said: “The estates review has been a very in depth and carefully considered process.
Winchcombe – Share accommodation with the Town Council with a Police Point in the Abbey Fields Community Centre. Cllr Rob Garnham, Chair of Gloucestershire Police Authority, said: “The process of reviewing our estate could have been very painful, and of course it was never going to be easy to determine which police stations should close. “However, we’ve found the public of Gloucestershire very understanding of the situation we are in. “Our communities have not only commented on our proposals, but in many cases have suggested and offered different venues for our officers to work from, which is a marvellous indication of the community spirit in the county. “We’ve listened to all the views put forward and have carefully considered our
“We have been clear throughout, however, that we not only need to change the way we delivery policing, we want to change the way we deliver policing in order to provide a more responsive, visible and accessible service. “While we may not have our own buildings in certain areas any more, we will still maintain a real visible policing presence in those communities in order to respond to local issues and work with communities to keep them safe from harm.”
Supermarket Shoppers Urged to be Aware of Possible Scam Gloucestershire Police are reminding shoppers to always keep an eye on their purses and handbags following two thefts and one suspicious incident in supermarket car parks in the county on Wednesday September 28. At around 12.30pm a woman was in the car park of Tesco on Bristol Road in Quedgeley when she was approached by man who asked her for directions. A short while later she discovered that her debit and credit cards had been stolen from her purse. The man was described as white, in his 40s and of ‘stocky’ build. He was wearing light brown clothing and spoke with a New Zealand accent. A similar incident happened around the same time but in the Tesco car park on Cricklade Road in Cirencester when a shopper was approached by a woman asking her for directions to Bristol. When the shopper got home she noticed that her cards had been stolen from the car. The woman was described as white, Eastern European, around 5ft 4” tall with ear length blonde/brown hair. She was wearing a black top and black jeans. It’s thought that in both incidents the women had been intentionally distracted whilst a second person stole the cards. A suspicious incident was also reported in the Waitrose car park on Honeybourne Way in Cheltenham. At around 11.30am a woman approached a shopper and asked her to point out where they were on a map. Another member of the public interrupted them at this stage and the woman left. Nothing was stolen. Officers are connecting this to the two reports of theft and are asking anyone with any information about these incidents to Gloucestershire Police on the new nonemergency number, 101, quoting incident number 182 of September 28. Vauxhall's new pocket rocket set to corner market But perhaps the icing on the Nürburgring’s cake is its chassis, which received its final sign-off at the Nürburgring’s notorious Nordschleife, or North Loop. Vauxhall commissioned Bilstein to develop bespoke spring and damper units for the new model, allowing drivers an even higher degree of control and involvement. A visual clue of this work is a ride height which is reduced by 20mm at the front and 15mm at the rear. The effect of the upgrades is breathtaking, the Nürburgring offering a degree of chassis balance and composure – as well as sheer grip – almost unheard of in its class.
V
auxhall’s new Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition promises to be one of the quickest B-road cars in its class, as the first cars become available in UK showrooms this month.
At the heart of the Nürburgring is a re-worked version of the Corsa VXR’s existing 1.6-litre turbocharged engine which now produces 205PS* at 5,750rpm (up from 192PS) and 250-280Nm of torque (up from 230266Nm). A modified engine management and turbocharger system, sports exhaust with reduced back pressure - and the ability to run on 98-octane fuel have all contributed to the rise in power. To harness the Nürburgring’s new-found power potential, Vauxhall has fitted it with a mechanical, multi-plate limited-slip differential, ensuring that its 205PS doesn’t go up in a cloud of tyre smoke, and providing the car with optimum traction at all times. Understeer is reduced dramtically, to the extent that the more throttle the driver applies through a bend, the more the vehicle grips!
Complementing the chassis mods are newly developed Brembo brakes, which are 30 per cent lighter than before, and have high-performance brake linings covering a 10 per cent larger area. In addition, the Corsa VXR’s ABS, Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control systems have all been recalibrated to take into account the Nürburging’s new set-up. With performance of 0-60mph in just 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 143mph, the Corsa Nürburgring will deliver all the driving thrills you’d expect from a car wearing the legendary track’s name. But just in case anyone was in doubt, the new model gets a raft of visual identifiers: a stainless steel dual exhaust, newly designed forged aluminium wheels in high-gloss grey, and ‘Nürburgring’ logos on the B-Pillars and front spoiler lip. There are also two new colours available – apple green ‘Grasshopper’ and red ‘Henna’. Inside, black and red ‘Nürburgring’ lettering adorns the sill plates and front Recaro seat backs, with bespoke white stitching on all seats, as well as the handbrake and gearshift console. The Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition is on sale now, priced at £22,295.

olkswagen UK is supporting tyre safety organisation TyreSafe’s campaign and encouraging drivers to be safer than ever this winter, with the launch of a winter tyre programme that offers customers a cost-effective way of getting the right tyres on their vehicles.

‘The message we want to get across is that you don’t need snow to make the most of winter tyres,’ said Volkswagen UK Parts Marketing Manager Eric Ekins. ‘In fact, once the mercury hits seven degrees Celsius or below, winter tyres tend to outperform their summer counterparts with greater grip for acceleration, cornering and braking.’

Winter tyres use a rubber compound optimised for temperatures of less than seven degrees celsius. Conventional tyres become stiffer at low temperatures, but the winter compounds remain softer and therefore better able to maintain grip. They also benefit from a special tread pattern that optimises water displacement and additional grooves, called sipes, which help to maximise traction.
Winter tyres therefore help to provide better grip whether under cornering, braking, or acceleration, and whether the roads are wet, icy, snowy or simply cold. According to safety organisation Tyresafe.org, they can reduce braking distances by up to 11 metres in icy conditions, and around eight metres (or two car lengths) on snowy roads.
What’s more, as most people drive to and from work in the early morning and late afternoon, when temperatures are even lower than the daily average, winter tyres are recommended over summer tyres for up to six months of the year.
As well as tyres and wheels, Volkswagen also offers durable high-quality nylon tyre/wheel storage bags at £25 inclusive for a set of four.
Winter tyres can be ordered to fit existing wheels on any Volkswagen car from a Polo to a Phaeton, and are priced from £250 a set, fully fitted. Winter wheel-and-tyre sets

A common misconception is that the UK is rarely cold enough for winter tyres, but Met Office statistics show that the mean average UK temperature in winter months over the past century has always been under six degrees Celsius, which means winter tyres make perfect sense, whether it snows or not.
