Fundraising for Gloucestershire Young Carers
Gloucestershire Young Carers (GYC) are delighted to have been chosen as the Charity of the Year by Cheltenham College. GYC will be the focus of Cheltenham College’s whole school fundraising campaigns throughout the year.
There are events for the whole school get involved in, including the annual rugby match, the annual netball match, and fun events between.
Gloucestershire Young Carers support over 1000 young carers annually, children from the age of eight years old and young adult carers up to 24 years old, who provide regular or ongoing care and emotional support to a family member. This could involve caring for someone with a physical disability, long-term illness, mental health issues, substance misuse problems, or a learning disability.
This carer could have one or all of the following responsibilities: emotional support, personal care, housework tasks, medication management, hosipital and DR appointments and financial management.
Gloucestershire Young Carers provides various support services to help these young carers throughout the year including: respite groups, one-on-one support, and fun activities designed to give them a break and connect with others in similar situations.

Director of Sport, Tim Watts
As Director of Sport at Cheltenham College it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 1st Team Charity Netball Match here at Cheltenham College. It is a major event in the sporting calendar and it encompasses all the fantastic attributes that sport has to offer for our pupils. Our mission at College is to promote a lifetime investment in sport and exercise, the thrill of being involved in a team dynamic and the satisfaction one gains from competition. At Cheltenham College we pride ourselves on being able to offer a sporting experience for any child, regardless of ability.
We have had a fantastic start to the season with an exciting pre-season of friendly fixtures against Hucclecote Netball Club. The matches against Hucclecote were a fantastic opener to the season ahead and a chance for our girls to play in a number of different combinations to strengthen our connections through court. We have 17 Netball Squads in College and so far, our girls have played a total of 74 matches! All 161 pupils who have opted to take Netball as their games option have represented College and been a part of the match day experience. A particular mention must go to our senior 2nd team who are currently unbeaten! The U13A have had a fantastic season, reaching the semi finals of the Regional Championships this year.
Our Senior 1st team have had some outstanding performances, and their unit work is developing significantly each match. They have scored 201 goals so far this season and are very excited for the annual Charity Match vs Malvern College.
With a full calendar of fixtures each year and teams of all abilities, everyone at Cheltenham College has the opportunity to participate and succeed in sport. Those pupils that wish to reach the highest levels in their chosen sport are supported through the Talented Athlete Programme.
We are looking forward to the charity match against Malvern College, which we expect to be an exciting and competitive event. Last year it was a goal for goal game with Cheltenham College securing victory by just two goals. We cannot wait to see what is in store this time round!
Everyone benefits from our extensive sports facilities and the coaching and support of the College Sports Professionals. Good Schools Guide 2023 highlighted that Girls and Boys at College place “equal value on each other’s sports, with masses of parents, pupils and staff turning up to cheer on players at matches.”
Well done and thank you to all the girls and staff involved in the Netball programme.
We’re sure that this evening’s event highlights just how true this statement is!
Cheltenham College are proud to have a number of alumni who have gone on to achieve fantastic sporting success since their time at Cheltenham. A selection of some successful Old Cheltonians have been named below.
Tom McEwen (H, 2009) and his horse JL Dublin won Gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the equestrian eventing team. Congratulations to Tom and his team: Laura Collett on London 52 and Rosalind Canter on Lordships Gaffal.
Flora Peel (A, 2013) represented Team GB Women’s Hockey in the Paris Olympics. Flora also achieved 50 combined caps for England and GB Hockey in 2024.
In June 2024, Jamie Chadwick (Ch, 2016) became the first woman to win on a road course (rather than oval track) in the US racing series, IndyCar NXT.
Abbie Whybrow (W, 2020) played in the MCC Women’s Day at Lords in May 2024.
In June 2024, Charlotte Woodman (Q, 2015) played in the GB Rugby 7s squad as part of the Women’s 7s Championship in Makarska, Croatia.
Seb Blake (BH, 2020), Jack Clement (S, 2019), Louis Hillman Cooper (S, 2020) and Ollie Thorley (BH, 2015) all played for Gloucester Rugby, with Jack voted ‘Young Player of the Season’. Ollie was listed in the top 10 fastest rugby players in the world currently.
It is an absolute pleasure to join you in this year’s annual charity match, now into its fifth year. This annual celebration of netball continues to be a mainstay and highlight of our school calendar, shown by the amount of support generated not only from our own school community, but also that of Cheltenham and guests near and far.
Our girls have a lot to look forward to, including the recent launch of our next major overseas Netball and Hockey Tour to Malaysia to take place in summer 2026. The cultural experiences and sporting competition will create shared memories that I have no doubt will stay with the girls, and the staff who accompany the trip, for their lifetime. Sport brings people together like nothing else - it teaches you how to connect with people from all walks of life like nothing else.
My thanks go to Becky Carter, Kate Mears and Tim Watts for pulling this event together, which is no small task. I am very much looking forward to all that this rivalry brings in what we hope will be a cracking contest, played in the right spirit.
