Kingfishers Update Firefighters Kingfishers had a fantastic time when they were visited by some firefighters with a fire engine on Wednesday afternoon. They enjoyed asking questions, dressing up and exploring the fire engine, but by far, the highlight was being given the opportunity to squirt the hose for themselves!

Lower School News Year 3 Shadows

Year 4 Spooky Stories Year 4 have been looking carefully at their creative writing this week, with the theme of spooky stories. We have thought about how we can improve our writing and how words can be used to build up atmosphere and suspense. We have worked both individually and collaboratively to produce some exciting pieces of written work.

Year 7 Pupils Deliver Food Donations Year 7 pupils helped to load the van as harvest donations were collected by volunteers from Trinity Church on Tuesday. All donations will be handed out by ‘The Garage’, a drop-in centre at the church, or sent out as parcels to those who cannot visit.

Annabella’s Skydive Good luck to former Prep, and current College pupil, Annabella B who will soon be completing a daring skydive to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Annabella left The Prep in 2014 to join Queen’s House and has two other siblings at the school, one in Fourth Form and one still at The Prep in Year 5. In January her world and those of her family and friends was rocked when she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. After months of treatment thanks to the Teenage Cancer Trust, she battled her illness and “came out on top”.

Now, to say thank you and to give back to the great cause which helps teenagers and their families during devastating times, she will be doing a skydive to raise money. For more information or to pledge any support you can, visit her JustGiving page, the link for which can be found below the pictures of Annabella.

Shakespeare’s School Festival Workshop The casts of the two Shakespeare’s School Festival productions were treated to a workshop with professional actor Aaron Kelly. The Tempest cast (Year 6) worked on choral speaking, teamwork, and the rhythm of the text. For Henry V, the Upper School cast tried to create the noise and energy of a battlefield through choreography and a cacophony of sound.

Girls’ Sport Update Team of the Week

U8A were unbeaten at the St Hugh’s Hockey Festival The sun shone and the hockey was fast and furious with the girls playing eight minute matches virtually back to back. We played five-a-side and rotated all the girls so they had experience of each position. The first opponent was our own B Team and in a close contest, the girls managed to win. The attack played really well and Robyn revelled in the striker position. Emily and Sophia ably supported her in midfield with some accurate passes. Of the remaining matches, the final game was probably the most pleasing to watch as the girls played with real determination, Elsie in particular was very fast to close down the opposing team at the push back and more often than not, came away with the ball. In this game against St Hugh’s, Eva proved to be a very strong defender and consistently managed to clear the ball from the shooting D. Sophia and Emily made sure the ball was theirs if it came near them and tackled well. The match finished with Robyn scoring a great goal that started from Eva in defence and involved nearly the whole team. This match was won 3-0. Overall the girls should be very proud of the way they played. Seeing them pass the ball and running into forward positions to receive the pass was really good. It was also great to see them all tackling with determination and trying to ensure they did not crowd the player on the ball. What was especially pleasing was the way in which the girls supported each other, never gave up trying and thanked their opponents after each match. A really enjoyable morning in the sunshine.

Boys’ Sport Update Boys’ Rugby Team of the Keep up to date Week – U11Bs Our U11B team have enjoyed a golden start to their season. Injuries have tested the depth of our resources like no season I can remember. The boys have adapted, reshaped and responded to this challenge with a series of attractive and impressive performances against some very good opposition. Wednesday’s game against the Richard Pate School exemplified the boys’ can-do attitude and demonstrated how deep the skill levels run in our squad. To beat an A team, when so depleted by injury, required every player on the pitch to play at their very best. They did and so delivered a very effective performance. The pattern of the match was set within the opening seconds when pressure was applied to the Richard Pate attack by committed chasing of the kick-off. The chase led to a spilled ball that was pounced upon by Finlay M, who opened the scoring account with our first try, only seconds after the start whistle. The game then continued to go Cheltenham’s way and the team kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout the match. There were many highlights including a super hat-trick from Addison S. The coaches were impressed by the players’ commitment to break the gain-line when attacking and the speed at which the ball was recycled at the breakdown. The scrum performed very well and Felix D showed enormous commitment to win the ball at the set piece. His support running in open play was also an example to all. There are aspects of the game that we will be working on in training but the real highlight of this performance was the boys’ willingness to take on an A team and play above themselves. Everyone stepped up and showed their character as well as their skill.

And finally... Dear Parents Thursday was National Poetry Day. As a school we are always keen to use nationwide celebrations to reinforce the messages we give on a regular basis in the classroom. A wider context to learning is always a powerful tool. As part of this the staff were all asked to put a copy of their favourite poem on their door. This led to a great deal of thought and thumbing through some old poetry anthologies before I settled on the poem reproduced below. Eddie and the Nappy may be a strange choice, and I’m not sure exactly what it says about me, but following my lengthy deliberation it was the clear and obvious choice for me! I read it at least once a year to the children in Kingfishers (or my old Pre-Prep) and the delight and howls of laughter it inevitably brings (and, yes, I suppose I love doing the funny voices) sum up what the celebration of poetry is about. Exciting children, giving them something to remember and, perhaps, inspiring them to try their own. Bumping into children many years later, as old boys and girls, many still ask about the many and varied adventures of Eddie. Job done! Have a great weekend.
