Lower School News Keep up to date

Nature Art This week, Lower School were using nature as an inspiration for art work, we found textures in nature to make wax rubbings. It was amazing what patterns and textures we could make and we experimented with different media and different natural items; bark, leaves and tree stumps. We worked together to design collages inspired by the rubbings we had made and our finished pieces showed all kinds of creatures and natural inspiration.

Literature Festival

Last week we embraced the Cheltenham Literature Festival, visiting some of the most captivating and inspirational authors in children’s literature. Each year group had the opportunity to attend an event, one of the most popular talks being Anthony Horowitz. Anthony, the prolific writer of the Alex Rider series gave an inspirational hour long talk, speaking about how his life influences have impacted his writing. He explained the ideas and concepts behind his stories and left us with a thought-provoking quote: ‘The thing about a book is that it’s like a door, it’s shaped like a door and you can open it like a door. It has the same purpose, it takes you through to another place.’ We are lucky to have one of the greatest literature festivals on our doorstep and we hope all our pupils enjoyed their visit and feel motivated to pick up a book!

Middle School Craft Club Craft Club enjoyed icing some biscuits in support of World Mental Health Day #HelloYellow as well as carving pumpkins in the build up to Halloween.

Year 7 Science Year 7 enjoyed using neutralisation to make a rainbow. It’s harder than you might think to make green!

Halloween Fun at Bakery Club! The pupils who come to Middle School Bakery Club had lots of fun this week decorating cakes with a spooky Halloween theme. They created a witch’s hat and decorated cupcakes with spooky monsters and scary spiders. They also made monster marshmallows on sticks! Some of the pupils used ready roll icing to create pumpkin decorations. They also worked well as a team afterwards to tidy up. Happy Halloween!

Boarding House Update Drayton Manor The Boarders braved the wet weather at Drayton Manor on Sunday, it did not disappoint and they are already asking when we can go again! We seem to have increased the number of giant cuddly unicorns in the Boarding House significantly, they almost need their own dorm! Thank you to Miss Ramsay, Mr Patterson and all the Gaps for being awesome and leading the trip with such enthusiasm. We all enjoyed a wonderful roast beef dinner on return with giant yorkshire puddings and cake for pudding, we really are well looked after.

Since introducing Accelerated Reader for all pupils in Years 5-7 at the start of this term, there has been a real buzz about private reading here at The Prep! In just over six weeks, pupils in these three year groups at the Prep have collectively read over 21 million words and

successfully passed nearly 450

book quizzes between them. Mr O’Sullivan has already presented over 70 certificates to pupils who

have achieved reading milestones, and we have two members of the prestigious

‘Millionaires Club’, for those pupils who have

individually read over a million words since the start of this term. The contest to see which House is meeting the most reading targets is also well underway, and as we approach the half term break, Athens House holds a slender lead over Persia, closely followed by Troy House. It has been a fabulous response to Accelerated Reader across all three year groups, ably supported by the efforts of the English department in engaging our young readers. We would also like to thank all those parents who have been encouraging their children at home with their reading: the success of Accelerated Reader very much depends on a successful partnership between the school and home.

The October Half Term Reading Challenge To maintain this excellent progress with reading over the two-week break, we are encouraging all our pupils from Year 3 right up to Year 8 to continue to read as much as possible in their spare time, and for this to be recorded in their Reading Record booklets, which all pupils have been given. Each member of the English department and the Lower School team will have some special prizes to award to the pupils in their classes who have made the most progress with their reading over the holiday. How Can Parents Help? 1. Firstly, do please continue to support your children with their reading whenever possible. The more they read, the better! 2. Secondly, please do ask to see your children’s Reading Record on a regular basis. Talk to them about the reading, and even better, read with them, or allow them to read aloud to you. 3. Lastly, please sign your children’s Reading Record before they return to school after half term.

And finally... Dear Parents It really has been a whirlwind seven weeks. They have been hugely enjoyable, rewarding, tiring and satisfying and, at the end of them (my first half term), I feel very much part of The Prep team. Whilst there are definitely some things that we need to work on, what is clear is that The Prep is a thriving and happy school with children who love their days and get as much as possible out of everything we do. They will all be tired and will enjoy a rest over half term! Those who won’t be resting, initially at least, are our senior girls and boys who are off on hockey and rugby tours to Holland and Scotland respectively. I know they will learn a lot from the experience but also have the most amazing time.
