Lower School News Year 4 India Day The Year 4 children in Lower School enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate their studies with ‘India Day”. We had such a fun day making Indian sweets and Rangoli patterns in the morning and then performing an Indian dance and dressing up in traditional costumes. In the afternoon we used Indian carved wood blocks to create printed designs and we finished the day with a feast of Indian food. The children absolutely loved the dance routine and after a few practices it began to look like a scene from Bollywood. You can see the highlights in next week’s video!

Girls’ team of the week - 1st team On Tuesday 3 December the 1st Hockey team took part in the West of England Hockey finals at Millfield. The girls played some excellent Hockey and they narrowly missed out on gaining a place at the National Hockey Finals. They lost in the semi final on penalty strokes. Mrs McNulty and Mr Williams are extremely proud of the girls and how they all played at the Regional Finals.

Sporting Success Congratulations to Theo A was has recently signed with Forest Green Rovers Football Club’s Academy. Theo earned his spot on the team following a six-week trial with the club’s U10s. A fantastic achievement, well done Theo and good luck! Well done to Tennis star Lewis M who competed in the U10 Tennis Winter National Tour Competition in Easton over the weekend. Lewis qualifies as one of the top 32 players in the country due to his successes in recent tournaments. Winning two matches and losing three, Lewis did brilliantly and earned some great experience of competing at the top level.

If your child has had success recently on or off the sports field, we would love to hear about it! To be included in future Prep for the Week’s, please email Mr O’Sullivan, with full details, via prep.head@cheltenhamcollege.org Prep for The Week Issue Number 1940 6 December 2019

In Other News Ceilidh Dancing To celebrate St Andrew’s Day, Rome House enjoyed some Ceilidh dancing. The Romans learned the Dashing White Sergeant, one of the most popular and high-paced of the Scottish Reels. Reception children who have been learning a reel joined in and performed their dance.

Middle School Merry Little Christmas A great time was had by all, including the teachers, at the Middle School Merry Little Christmas party earlier this week. With only one week left of term, we are certainly in the Christmas spirit!

On Tuesday evening the Year 8 Academic Scholars and Mr Newson visited Cheltenham’s Chapel Arts centre to listen to a lecture on biodiversity and conservation by Ian Redmond OBE, as part of the Scholarship enrichment programme. Ian is an eminent field biologist who specialises in tropical biomes, gorillas and elephants. He has worked closely with Sir David Attenborough on a number of BBC projects spanning 40 years; most famously, Ian was the scientist who introduced Sir David to the mountain gorillas in Rwanda - as shown in the iconic scene from ‘Life on Earth’, back in 1979.

Biodiversity and Conservation Talk

The Year 8 students were enthralled by his stories of working with not only Sir David but also Dian Fossey, the American primatologist whose life and work inspired the movie ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ - and who also gave her name to one of the Prep’s Science labs. It was a terrific talk and all of the students were inspired by Ian’s stories about the natural world around us - especially when he told them about his close encounter with a cave-dwelling elephant in Uganda. Perhaps one day we will be reading about one of our Year 8 Scholars working closely with the natural world in the same way - watch this space...!

And finally... Dear Parents When good old Roy Wood, and the rest of Wizard, penned the immortal lines, ‘I wish it could be Christmas every day’ I’m pretty sure he must have had prep schools foremost in his mind! Three nativities, Christmas concerts, the Lower School Christmas play, carol singing in town, Christingle, the Middle School Christmas Disco and any number of other Christmassy events have happened in the last few days - and that’s just the warm up for the final week of term culminating in our Christmas Carol Service next Friday. All of that whilst keeping the normal busy life of the school going.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1940 6 December 2019

A quiet, relaxing weekend, for all will allow the children to be fully refreshed and really enjoy the magic of prep school at Christmas, accompanied by the dulcet tones of Roy Wood in the background. I look forward to seeing you at various events over the next week.
