WEDNESDAY GAMES All children to arrive in games kit and tracksuits every Wednesday please. This will ensure that lessons and break times are not interrupted. Thank you.
And finally... Don’t miss Mr O’Sullivan’s take on this week. His Week 2 blog can be found at the back of this week’s edition. 2
Kingfishers Update First Week Fun It was wonderful to see our Kingfishers come back to school last week and also to welcome our new children. We loved our bouncy dinosaur and our BBQ on the first day of school – can we do this every day please? During our Building Learning Power day this week the boys and girls got stuck into their activities and reminded themselves of our Super Skills Squad characters. They challenged themselves like Charlie the Challenging Cheetah, showed superb empathy just like Ella the Elephant and persevered just like Poppy the Pony as they involved themselves in lots of activities in the different Kingfishers classrooms. A superb start to the term everyone!

Lower School News Year 4 Visit to Priory House in Warwick
Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!
Year 4 had a fantastic day out to Priory House in Warwick. We spent our time learning about the Anglo Saxons in Britain. We became archaeologists, unearthing broken pots and putting them carefully back together. We looked for clues in place names to find out where Anglo Saxons might have settled and we practised writing in runes using quills. After lunch we had a chance to look at how the Anglo Saxons might have dressed. We then had the opportunity to design and make our own Anglo Saxon brooches. This was a fun filled day and the children had a valuable introduction into the lives of Anglo Saxons. A great start to our History topic this term.

Boarding House Update On Monday 2 September we welcomed back our returning Boarders as well as our 21 new Boarders to The Prep Boarding House. It was a busy first week, but our experienced Boarders have been amazing at looking after everyone new and settling them in to their new home. The Boarders enjoyed a relaxing and sunny first weekend, making the most of all the facilities, using the fields, swimming pool, Boarding House, balcony and fort to name a few. On Sunday afternoon we enjoyed a tasty BBQ before competing in a variety of sports competitions lead by our Year 8 Boarders. Well done to everyone for joining in with such great spirit and for making the first weekend such a success. We very much look forward to our trip to Legoland on Sunday.

Upper School News This term we have welcomed back our pupils into Upper School and we have been lucky enough to have lots of new pupils come into the section. We have enjoyed making new friends and catching up on what everyone has been up to over the summer. Some of the highlights have been the inflatable challenges last week, meeting new pupils and parents at our information evening last Thursday, and starting to look at how Year 8 can really be involved in helping the community around school and beyond. Now that we are back in lessons we am pleased to see so many Upper School pupils helping to make sure new pupils in all sections of the school are finding their way around. We look forward to a happy and productive term and to seeing you at as many events as possible.

Start of the Year Extravaganza Tuesday 3 September was like no other start of term ever seen before! The children arrived anticipating a ‘normal’ first day back but what a surprise they had. To kick start the year, the children worked in different, mixed groups taking part in a wide range of activities suitable for their age all of which linked to one of our Key Skills and Attributes.
We were keen the children not only had a day to remember but that we started the year focussing on what is at the heart of our ethos, what we value, and what is rewarded at The Prep. Creativity, Challenge, Empathy, Resilience and Participation were all represented in one of a range of activities which the children enjoyed. These included challenges being faced on an inflatable course, creativity being drawn upon in a team aesthetic construction activity, participation of all team members as they planned an expedition to Mount Everest, and an empathetic approach to considering the power of charity. We welcomed the inspirational speaker James Shone who spoke passionately about his personal experience of needing to draw on his resilience which he translated into the benefits of this approach to life from us all, adults and children alike. The whole school enjoyed a BBQ lunch in houses with fantastically decorated house gazebos and a real sense of fun, belonging and anticipation to start the year.

Football Tour
After the end of the Summer Term, on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 July, the 1st XI Football team travelled south to play two football fixtures against schools in the South East. The first match was against Solefield School, hosted at Sevenoaks School. Despite showing some naivety by going two goals down to a well-drilled side, The Prep clawed a crucial goal back before half time. After a chance to talk tactics and learn from mistakes, a much improved second half saw four goals with no reply, a 5-2 victory overall. After some bowling, ‘cheeky’ Nandos, sleep in the Holiday Inn and all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast, the tourists set off in search of Hazelwood School. Their team had beaten Cheltenham 2-0 comfortably the previous Summer and that year reached the National Finals. Buoyed by their comeback in the match the day before, The Prep raced out all guns blazing and finished 7-3 at full time. The tour was great fun and a culmination of a lot of hard work over the year during training. Both opposition sides play football instead of hockey and to come away with two victories is an impressive feat. My thanks to the staff of Solefields and Hazelwood for accommodating us at a busy stage of their school year, but also to Mr Yiend, Mr Dawson and Mr Kernot for giving up their time and for their excellent company. A final thanks to the team, their passion and enthusiasm for the ‘beautiful game’ was clear throughout, they leave a great legacy to the future players.

Shakespeare Experience Workshop
Members of The Prep Shakespeare Experience in Middle and Upper School were treated to a drama workshop day, this week.
Visiting professionals ran sessions in acting and character work, gruesome special effects make-up, hand to hand stage combat and sword-fighting. It was a full and very exciting day. The ‘Shakespeare Experience’ production of four abridged Shakespeare plays will be the first performance in our new-look assembly hall at 6.30pm on 14 October. All are welcome.

Other News and Notices Congratulations to Ollie W who has been named this week’s reader of the week, great work Ollie keep it up!
Scholars’ Science Practical In Biology the Year 8s have been investigating the energy content of food. They had to think about the different variables in the experiment and also evaluate their method. “When you are a child you are told not to play with fire or with your food, however today we have been burning our food, it’s amazing!” (Quote from a Year 8 pupil).
Congratulations to Jasper S and Lulu H who have reached the 25 plus mark for the term already and receive the first Scooby Awards.

Prep Parents Welcome from Prep Parents (formerly Friends of the Prep), The Prep’s social and fundraising parent body. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at events throughout the year, whether as volunteers helping to organise events or participants – we hope to arrange something to appeal to everyone. We ‘kick-started’ our fundraising effort with a ‘children v parents Football match’ raising over £250 for the school’s charities, Cheltenham Open Door and Water Aid. Huge thanks to Ben Marsden and Andy Theedom for running and refereeing the event so brilliantly, and to those who braved it and pitched in – some playing for the first time ever! There was a fantastic turn-out with more than 60 players and some incredible talent on display for the spectators to admire. Those on the sidelines hesitant about playing, convinced that some of us were fobbing them off when we said we hadn’t a clue, must have been reassured! - Wear your trainers next time! Our next Sunday sporting event will be run by two international hockey players, Lucie Archer and Ben Marsden. Hockey for all, followed by tea and family swim. Mouthguards and shin pads are essential for children playing Hockey. Football will be available for little ones and those who don’t have mouthguards. Adults – mouthguards and shin pads are advisable but at your own risk. We can provide hockey sticks and shin pads. Tickets are £5 to include lolly, cake and drinks. We hope to see you there – Sunday 15 September @ 3.30pm, Linton Astro. Save the following dates: Prep ‘Dogs got Talent’ Saturday 28 Sept, 1-4pm. £5pp Speed Quiz and Curry by Bhoomi, Friday 4 October 7.30pm for 8pm. Contact Prep Parents or your rep to join a team for this exciting interactive quick-fire quiz. £25pp Christmas Breakfast and party, Sunday 8 December from 9.30am. 150+ tickets booked (and paid for, thank you,) to Harry Potter World, The Nutcracker and Matilda the Musical. We would love to hear your suggestions for future events and please contact your rep or email us if you’d like to get involved prepparents@mail.com.

And finally... Dear Parents If you were picking up on Monday I must apologise if the scene that greeted you was akin to an episode of Casualty! As part of our Shakespearian Experience one of the sessions the children took part in was stage make up, specifically wounds! The results were both incredibly realistic and somewhat stomach churning. The kids, of course, absolutely loved it. With other sessions on stage fighting (utterly brilliant) and general stagecraft it was a hugely enjoyable day and one which we will all see the benefits of on 14 October when the children put on Much Ado and Twelfth Night. Put the date in your diary. It is definitely one not to be missed. Lower School have been enjoying Roald Dahl Day today so Snozzcumbers all round for lunch! My favourite moment of the week however was during my Kingfishers Assembly on Thursday. I always give out a number of Playtime Super Powers Awards to deserving children but this week I had many more than normal and most were to Year 1s who had taken it upon themselves to teach the new Reception children their playtime games and had got them all joining in.
Prep for The Week Issue Number 1930 13 September 2019
It was a brilliant example of the children looking after each other and thinking and caring about each other. The only downside - I have now been co-opted into the next game of Duck, Duck, Goose on Monday! Have a good weekend.
