Kingfishers Update Duck Duck Goose with Mr O’Sullivan Our Kingfishers were delighted this week to welcome Mr O’Sullivan to the patio at playtime where they taught him how to play Duck Duck Goose. Mr O’Sullivan very quickly learned that when you join in a game in Kingfishers, you are welcomed wholeheartedly and get ‘chosen’ all the time to be the ‘one’ to do the chasing. Next time bring your trainers Mr O’Sullivan as we have a fun game of Mousetrap to teach you!

Forest School This week in Forest School we discussed the change in seasons and made some fabulous leaf hedgehogs, along with the usual minibeast hunts and ever popular digging area.

Spider’s Web The children were amazed on Monday morning by the enormous spider’s web that such a tiny spider had made.

Kingfishers Update Autumn has arrived in Year 1 The children have been practising their Super Squad Skills through participating in a variety of morning challenges that link with our autumnal theme. We have used our beautiful surroundings to collect natural resources which have enhanced our classroom learning!

Year 2 Fun Year 2 have been learning about Traditional Tales. The children had to search for all the different parts of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. These were hidden all around the department! They then had to sequence it before re-telling the well-known tale to the rest of the class. Year 2 have had a blast learning all about electricity. They were set a challenge to make a bulb light choosing their own equipment. They were all feeling enlightened by the end of the lesson, knowing how to set up a simple circuit. Well done!

Lower School News Wellbeing sessions currently have an Autumn theme. Being a season where lots of changes happen, the children have been thinking about changes they experience and how they feel when they face change. Pupils are familiar with the three main parts of their brain through the use of puppets. Monkey - Amygdala. Elephant - Hippocampus. Owl Prefrontal Cortex. We practise a variety of breathing techniques, often use a mind jar and always go on a yoga journey, experience story massage, participate in positive affirmations and finish with a relaxing meditation.

House Laser Tag This week Athens took on Corinth in a classic Lasertag contest. The rain stopped at just the right time to see the fields and play areas turned into a superb battleground and the children took full advantage of willow trees, inflatable obstacles and even the outdoor classroom to ambush and outwit each other. Sadly, this competition isn’t worth any points at the end of term, but great House spirit was displayed on both sides. Credit could have been awarded for the fun enjoyed, the miles run, the number of smiles and the speed at which 75 hotdogs were consumed at the end. Well done everyone!

Boys’ Team of the Week Clark’s Sharks After a quiet start to the term, the Sharks are now scenting blood in the water and are playing some stunning rugby. Their win over St Hugh’s last week was backed up with a great 45-25 win away at Chandlings on Wednesday. A first half blitz of tries showed the coach trip had not affected their enthusiasm and they enjoyed a great tea to finish off.

Girls’ Team of the Week - U8 Panthers The Under 8 team are undefeated so far this term and they had another super win vs Hatherop Castle. Mrs Mackman was so impressed with how the team played. They have started to demonstrate some excellent passing and are working really well as a team. A huge well done to our team of the week, the Under 8 Panthers!

Years 7 and 8 Swim Team vs Beaudesert Our first gala of the year was an away meet at Beaudesert. The team was an unknown quantity with a number of new swimmers joining the team. We exploded into action with some excellent wins in the medley relays and continued our great form into the individual races, finishing with a superb set of front crawl relays. The final score was 114-87 and kicked off our swimming year in superb fashion.

SpeedQuizzing has enabled the traditional pub quiz to evolve into something new. By drastically reducing the amount of time given to answer each question. SpeedQuizzing addresses the problem of cheating which has become a serious issue at traditional, slower paced quiz/trivia events. Paper and pens are replaced by tablets/smartphones, therefore, gone are the days of swapping papers to mark answers, as scores are updated real-time by the software. Still requiring a compere, SpeedQuizzing takes what people love about traditional pen and paper quizzes, but adds a new level of energy and social interaction between players.

And finally... Dear Parents With Mr O’Sullivan attending the IAPS Heads’ Conference, I am delighted to have the opportunity to reflect on the week. Schools often talk about the importance of “breadth” and this week at The Prep has been an excellent example. All of the Houses offered an evening to enable pupils from across different year groups to enjoy one another’s company with laser tag, circus skills and a magic show all adding to the excitement. A quick glance back over the past few days has seen activities as diverse as pizza-making in Upper School to our Egyptian Detectives in Year 3, as well as countless fixtures, a swimming gala and our two vibrant Harvest Festival services yesterday and today. The key point about such a range of opportunities is that they provide the chance for each and every child to find an area of school that they enjoy. This in turn builds that vital quality of confidence into their education.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1932 27 September 2019

It doesn’t matter whether it is on stage, playing an instrument, in the Science labs or on the games field; what really counts is that each child at The Prep has the chance to find their niche and grow their selfbelief from these areas of their learning. Tomorrow’s Open Morning is another opportunity to immerse themselves into a whole new set of experiences as we go Around the World in Eighty Days and I am sure that they will revel in the opportunity! Have a nice weekend. Mr Jenkins Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Designated Safeguarding Lead
