Kingfishers Update Healthy Nursery

This week the Nursery children have been thinking about keeping healthy. We have talked about exercise, washing hands, brushing teeth and healthy eating. The children had lots of fun sorting foods into groups of healthy and sweet treats. We tried some of the healthy delicious fruit and vegetables and thought about what they looked, smelt, felt and tasted like.

Reception Art and Handwriting fun Handwriting We have been getting ready for writing by practising all the starting letter shapes. We have used whiteboards, paintbrushes outside and even shaving foam to form the Georgia Pig letter shape.

Art This week we have been looking at Healthy Eating and so we have been exploring the art of Giuseppe Arcimboldo. As you can see we have had lots of fun using fruit to make faces.

Kingfishers Update Shapes and Cats in Hats Year 1 have been learning all about shapes this week. We sorted objects that Mrs Jones brought in from home. We also had so much fun listening to The Cat in the Hat! We then created a rhyming web!

Year 2 Fun Year 2 have been looking at the traditional tale, Jack and the Beanstalk. On Wednesday, Mrs David found a note from the Giant in her pigeon hole along with some beans. The Giant gave Year 2 the challenge of coming up with different settings for Jack to visit. Maybe the magic beans would take them to Rainbow World or Candyland. We have also created beanstalks in our classroom to take us to the new, imaginary world.

Lower School News We have had an exciting week in Lower School with lots of outdoor learning going on. We now have plenty of warm blankets to snuggle in by the fire, as the weather gets colder. These were used this week by Year 4 to keep out the autumn chills. In outdoor learning, Year 3 have been learning knife skills and made some fabulous potions based on the year group story of George’s Marvellous Medicine. They loved digging the mud and stirring in leaves to create magic potions. We celebrated National Poetry day by writing some class poems and reading lots of poems connected with the theme of Truth. Year 3 especially enjoyed listening to Michael Rosen reading his own poem, Chocolate Cake.

Boarding House Update We were very sad to have to cancel our Boarders Weekend Away, but were pleased to be tucked up in bed on Saturday evening rather than in torrential rain with 45mph winds, in a thin tent! We made quick plans for an alternative weekend, which seemed to go down well with all involved. Saturday afternoon saw an outing to watch Cheltenham Town vs Crewe, which was a 1-1 thriller, along with the normal Bath Road, Town and swimming options. On Sunday afternoon we headed to Mr Mulligan’s Crazy Golf down at the Brewery Centre. It was a highly competitive competition with the ‘Big Bears’ coming out on top with the lowest score for their round. On Thursday evening we hosted our first Boarding House Open Evening for current and prospective parents to come and experience what it is like to be a Boarder here at The Prep. Our Boarders did a fantastic job of taking families on tours around the House and showing them the activities going on around school. We then enjoyed sitting down together for supper. Thank you to the fantastic tour guides and all the parents that attended: we hope you enjoyed having a bit more insight into the life of the Boarders and Flexi Boarders. We hope to run another event later in the year, so please do sign up if you missed out this time.

Boys’ Team of the Week - Warriors, Sharks, Panthers and Young Guns On Wednesday afternoon, the Warriors, Sharks, Panthers and Young Guns were all shining examples of one our key Cheltenham Prep values – Challenge. All these teams played ‘up’, so our B teams against other schools’ A teams and our C teams against their B teams. The boys more than stepped up to the challenge with some good wins, tight games and a ‘never give up’ attitude. Very proud of every one of them and we know that they are more than ready for the challenge of Clifton on Saturday.

Girls’ Team of the Week - 1st Team The 1st team faced Cheltenham Ladies’ College on Wednesday 2nd October. The girls dominated throughout and started to show their real class in the second half of the match. Three well taken goals for Maddie A and a wonderfully solid performance by Ava R, who was also voted player of the match by the opposition. A very warm welcome back to Tula L-H, who has just returned to hockey after a long term injury. Tula marked her return by scoring her first goal of the season after only being on the pitch for a few minutes. Well done to all of the girls and wishing them all the best at IAPS next week.

Boys’ Rugby Results U13A vs Abingdon Won 30 - 20 U13B vs Abingdon Won 35 - 0 U12A vs Abingdon Drew 15 - 15 U12B vs Abingdon Lost 35 - 45 Bass’ Bisons vs Richard Pate Won 10 - 0 Bass’ Bisons vs Kitebrook Won 15 - 0 Wells’ Warriors vs Richard Pate Lost 0 - 1 Wells’ Warriors vs Kitebrook Lost 1 - 2 Clarke’s Sharks vs Richard Pate Won 20 - 15 Clarke’s Sharks vs Kitebrook Lost 20 - 25 Jenkins’ Jaguars vs Pinewood Drew 20 - 20 Patterson’s Panthers vs Richard Pate Lost 25 - 35 Patterson’s Panthers vs Kitebrook Lost 5 - 45 Young Guns vs Richard Pate Won 30 - 20 Young Guns vs Kitebrook Lost 0 - 30

Years 7 and 8 Swim Team vs Monmouth On Thursday evening, our swim team took on Monmouth School. Unfortunately, the day before the meet, Monmouth had to pull their girls’ team from the event, only sending their boys’ team over. To make it a larger event, we entered a boys’ team, girls’ team and a development team – probably the largest team we have ever put out. The gala was a huge success with our girls’ team scraping home ahead of our boys’ team, both outscoring Monmouth, but the highlight was seeing some of the development swimmers more than meeting the challenge and showing the strength in depth (see the joke!) that we have in the pool at The Prep.

Riding Success A special mention this week goes to Sofia G who has had an exciting summer competing in Equestrian competitions around the country. Her achievements include a 6th placed finish at the British Dressage Bronze Championships and 4th place in the British Dressage Under 25 Medium Level Championships - an incredible effort from an 11 year old! This weekend, Sofia finished 6th in the Elementary Area Festival Final, behind College pupil Tom O (pictured here). On top of other fantastic experiences, Sofia will also now train with Charlotte Dujardin, an Olympic and World Champion! Well done Sofia and good luck in upcoming events.

Science Fun

This week has seen Year 6 taking part in a heart dissection and Year 7 testing for hydrogen gas in the ‘Squeaky Pop Test’! Here are some of the best pictures...

Thank you to everyone who made this such an enjoyable afternoon; it was lovely to see so many children proudly displaying their dogs’ beauty, talents, obedience, character, and others enjoying the sell-out dog tombola, various obstacle courses, agility equipment and stalls. More than 100 dogs behaved impeccably, taking an interest in all that was going on and greeting each other merrily. We could not have done this without the support of Sally-Ann and Tom and our top dog Judge Debbie Anderes who officiated 25 classes, awarded 75 rosettes and felt the silky ears and gazed into the eyes of many, many, many dogs! The photos show the number of stalwart helpers on the day, and particular thanks to the reps who planned it and manned it with infectious enthusiasm and good cheer. We are looking forward to seeing lots of you at Bronwyn’s quiz on Friday… 100 and counting!

And finally... Dear Parents Although the balloon couldn’t actually go up (due to the high winds!) the Around The Prep in 80 Days Open Morning was a huge success.
