Kingfishers Update Nursery News The Nursery children have been using their sense of smell to match up smelly essential oils with real life objects. We smelt oranges, lemons, lavender and mint. We had fun finding the same smells and pairing them up together.

Reading and Handwriting Workshop Thank you to all the parents who came to the Reading and Handwriting Workshop on Tuesday afternoon. We hope you found it useful, if you have any further questions please ask any member of staff.

Celebrating Diwali The children in Reception have enjoyed celebrating Diwali early this week before breaking up for Half Term. They have learned all about the Festival of Light including the story of Rama and Sita. Take a look at some of the beautiful Rangoli patterns that have been created by the children.

Kingfishers Update Three Little Pigs Year 1 had a lot of fun investigating different materials that would work best for making houses for the Three Little Pigs. Thank you also to our big friends for their help!

UK Persuasive Poster Presentation Did you know that most tourists do not venture outside of London? Year 2 designed posters to persuade them that there are many more places for them to visit in the UK. They worked in groups to create posters all about their chosen place, then presented them to the rest of their year group.

Poetry Reading We have been busy creating and appreciating poetry in Year 2 this week. We practised rhyming and wrote our own verses of Incy the Spider’s Revenge. We read our poems aloud to the class, including intonation to make the meaning clear.

Lower School News During the final week of the first half of this term Lower School spent the day in the Company of the Royal Air Force who came to school to run a Personal Development Training Day. The day was aimed at increasing communication skills, listening skills and understanding the need for pupils to take leadership at times. It was a really fun day with lots of team-building activities and life lessons learnt.

Boarding House Update On Sunday afternoon the Boarders set off in the rain towards Maisemore to go to Bugs Boarding. This is one of the highlights of the Sunday trips calendar for many of the Boarders so we were keen for it to go ahead as planned. Fortunately the rain ceased and the sun shone for a fantastic, though rather muddy, afternoon of Mountain Boarding. There were scooters, mountain boards and sledges on which to ride down the large grassy hills. There was even a ride back to the top in the back of the truck if you were lucky! Many thanks to the Gaps, Mr Patterson and Mr Newson for leading the trip with such enthusiasm. We were delighted with a quote from one of the leaders at Bugs Boarding who said that the Boarders were ‘the politest children we’ve ever had’. Good job everyone, what a great way to end the first half of this term!

The Shakespeare Experience The new ‘Shakespeare Experience’ marks the start of a tradition of dramatic collaborations between The Prep, College, St John’s and other community-linked schools. Four abridged Shakespeare plays were performed in the new-look Prep Assembly Hall: Twelfth Night by Middle School, Much Ado About Nothing by Upper School, Romeo and Juliet by Saint John’s Primary School and ‘As You Like It‘ by Cheltenham College. Shakespeare’s plays are some of the richest and most complex ever written, so you appreciate the challenge of abridging 3 hours of stage time into just 30 minutes. Our casts, individually, have gained so much from their involvement, but the wonderful thing about this new project is what they gain from coming together and sharing their work and their experiences. Pupils from The Prep and St John’s greatly enjoyed a day of workshops, which included an incredibly exciting stage-fighting tutorial. For the performance, pupils from College also joined them in this celebration of Shakespeare.

Since expanding Accelerated Reader to all pupils in Years 3-8 at the start of this term as part of our 2019 Year of Reading, our reading culture here at The Prep has continued to grow! In just over six weeks, pupils in these six year groups have collectively read over 33 million

words and successfully passed over 1,000 book quizzes between

them. We have three members of the prestigious ‘Millionaires

Club’, for those pupils who have individually read over a million

words since the start of this term, as well as one highly-motivated

individual in Year 5 who is our first Double Word Millionaire of the year! The contest to see which House is meeting the most reading targets is also well underway, and as we approach the half term break, Troy House holds a slender lead over Persia, closely followed by Rome House. It has been a fantastic response to Accelerated Reader across the school, ably supported by the efforts of the English department, the Lower School team and, of course, Miss Richardson our Librarian, in engaging and supporting our young readers. We would also like to thank all those parents who have been encouraging their children at

home with their reading: the success of Accelerated Reader very much depends on a successful partnership between the school and home.

The October Half Term Reading Challenge To maintain this excellent progress with reading over the two-week break, we are encouraging all our pupils from Year 3 right up to Year 8 to continue to read as much as possible in their spare time, and for this to be recorded in their Reading Record booklets, which all pupils have been given. Each member of the English department and the Lower School team will have a special reward for those pupils in their classes who have made the most progress with their reading over the holiday. How Can Parents Help? 1. Firstly, do please continue to support your children with their reading whenever possible. The more they read, the better! 2. Secondly, please do ask to see your children’s Reading Record on a regular basis. Talk to them about the reading, and even better, read with them, or allow them to read aloud to you. 3. Lastly, please sign your children’s Reading Record before they return to school after half term.

They demonstrated great movement, accuracy when passing the ball, tracking back and working hard if they lost possession of the ball and generally played with a good understanding of the game and what they set out to achieve. Well done to all of the girls and Mr Boyd for a super team performance.

In Other News Following on from the success of the Exeat cake sale, the Fundraising Club made over £100 profit at the books and toys sale last Saturday. Huge thanks go to all families who donated items and to those who stayed after the House sporting events to spend their pocket money! We now have £225 to invest in our next project, so look out for details of our next event in the second half of term! The Fundraising Club.

The School Council met on Tuesday evening to find out more about the work of Water Aid. They used their water diaries to work out how much we use in a week at school as well as seeing how it felt to carry five litres of water and use a model of a water pump!

The Public Health Team have confirmed they will be coming to do the Nasal Flu Vaccine on the morning of Tuesday 5 November 2019 for Reception to Year 6 pupils inclusive. If you would like your child vaccinated and haven’t already completed a consent form there is still time to do this. Forms are available at Reception and from the Health Centre. May we take this opportunity to encourage you to examine your child’s hair for head lice. Within all schools there will be a small number of children infected and we are no exception here. We endeavour to keep on top of this and would welcome your support. Currently there are a number of children affected in several year groups. Whilst it is an annoying problem, it is not a danger to your child’s health. It can however cause them to be distracted, itchy, irritable, and even experience sleeplessness. It would be greatly appreciated if you could check your child’s hair, and treat it if necessary. If you have any queries about the practicalities of detection or treatment then please have a look at the information leaflet contained in the link at the bottom of this letter. http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Head-lice/Pages/Introduction.aspx

And finally... Dear Parents It seems extraordinary that we have reached Half Term already. It seems no time at all since we were welcoming everybody back and basking in the late summer sun. Having said all of that, so much has been achieved by the children in the last seven weeks that they are allpretty exhausted; happy yes, but very very tired. With some rest and recuperation over the next couple of weeks I’m sure everyone will be ready for probably the busiest, and most exciting, time in the whole prep school year. Half Term this year coincides with Halloween. Scooby, with a ‘little’ bit of help from our excellent catering team, is already in the mood thanks to this amazing pumpkin carving! I hope you all have fun on the 31st too. Don’t say it out loud ... but apparently ...... before too long ............ Christmas may be coming!
