Kingfishers Update

Huff and Puff "I will huff and puff and blow your house down!" This week the children have been building strong houses and using their own breath to mix colours.

Nursery Assembly The Nursery children went on a walk around the school. They had to listen hard and follow directional language. They also used their cuddly friends from Forest School to demonstrate lots of different positions including behind, underneath, in front, next to and on top of.

Missing and presumed eaten... The Reception children have been busy chasing the missing Gingerbread Men this week. Each day they have been left a clue in an attempt to find them before it is too late. It seems these two rascals have evaded capture for now!

Super Science Day! Kingfishers have been engaged and enlightened in the wondrous world of Science this week! We have had a blast making and launching Alka-Seltzer rockets, dunking biscuits and predicting which would keep its form and observing dry ice reacting with hot water amongst other exciting experiments! We have definitely unleashed our inner Einstein!

Lower School News Lower School is as busy and exciting as ever and last week saw the children enjoy a wide range of activities to enrich their education. The highlight of the week for most was probably World Book Day, with some wonderful costumes and poses on the catwalk. It was a pleasure for Year 3 to join Year 1 to share their stories also. The children have also been hard at work learning poems and presenting talks, which concluded with our Presentation Morning. The staff were blown away by the quality of the presentations and it was a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile morning. Despite relief being the main feeling once finished, the Year 3 and 4 children know how important the skill of speaking to an audience is and they have all grown in confidence and learnt new skills. Fixtures took place as normal on Wednesday afternoon; some cold and wet Hockey, and some Netball. However, the Year 3 girls enjoyed an afternoon indoors with bubble painting and cooking delicious jam and coconut tarts. The Year 4 pupils are closing in on completing their pencil boxes in DT lessons. There were also trips to Dundry Nursery and Compton Verney. On top of that, this week Lower School pupils took part in their Young Apprentice Day, but we will tell you more about that next week!

Maths Visit This week the Year 8 scholars had the opportunity to develop their maths by taking part in a workshop lead by Dr Enright, the Head of Maths at College. The pupils discussed the divisibility and factors of numbers, how to conjecture and then prove their ideas. They certainly had to use their thinking skills!

Riding Success Congratulations to Sofia G who has had success in her first Premier League dressage show at Myerscough College. She finished fourth in the FEI Pony Team Test, a fantastic achievement aged just 11, competing against riders and ponies up to the age of 16. We wish her good luck at her next Premier League competition in April.

Sport News Cross-Country Success Cross-country continues to thrive at The Prep. Thursday nights regularly see 30 children from Year 5 to Year 8 taking part in the club and prepared to test themselves in all weathers and conditions. The final league race of the season was unfortunately cancelled. However, from the previous three races we had some wonderful performances which resulted in the boys’ team finishing second and the girls’ team third overall from all the schools in Cheltenham – a wonderful effort from all the runners. Three of our runners did enough, throughout the season, to qualify for the County Championship race after finishing in the top 10 individuals in Cheltenham: Lawrence (3rd), Lily (6th) and Max (8th). The race took place at Wotton-Under-Edge on Saturday and there was more success which means the season is not over just yet for some! In horrendous conditions (some might say perfect for cross-country!) they all ran superbly in their races. Each race had 80 runners (the top 10 from each Gloucestershire district) and they knew that to qualify for the Nationals and represent Gloucestershire they had to come in the top 12. Max just missed out, coming 15th in a very competitive race although his time would have placed him 10th in the Year 6 race!! Lawrence was outstanding and came 4th missing out on 1st by just 3 seconds. Lily ran a really solid race and comfortably qualified, finishing 10th. Therefore, two more, Lawrence and Lily, have joined Maddie in qualifying for the Nationals this year which take place in Loughborough on Saturday 21 March – a tremendous achievement and the best of luck to them. Well done to all runners who have taken part in cross-country this year. Let’s try and build on this success next year.
