Kingfishers Update

Keep up to date

Fossil Week

The Nursery children have been making their own fossils using sand dough. They had to stir the stiff mixture, squash it and squeeze it to make the dough. They had to use rolling pins to flatten the dough and then use a stamp to print their dinosaur bones. We think they look great and very realistic!

Reception Discoverers The Reception children have enjoyed learning how to be paleontologists this week. They have learnt how difficult it is to extract fossils by trying to get the chocolate chips out of cookies and bashing a lump of ice to hunt down the dinosaurs locked inside. Do not worry no dinosaurs were hurt in these activities, although the cookies may have been gobbled up!

Kingfishers Update Author Visit We had the amazing author John Dougherty come to visit us this week. He entertained us by reading some extracts from his Stinkbomb and Ketchupface stories as well as his awardwinning book, There’s a Pig up my Nose. He ignited our imagination by playing his guitar and singing the theme tunes to the stories he had written. Truly inspiring!

Lower School News Lower School had an entertaining and hilarious time with John Dougherty on Tuesday. John sang the “theme song” for his Stinkbomb and Ketchup Face books and quickly had everyone joining in and roaring with laughter. John explained how he got his ideas for his books, that we can all be writers if we want to and how to make your ideas into a reality. He spoke about the baddies in the books, the badgers, and how we can create a story flow that works. The children were entranced as he read from his books. This could be a wonderful birthday present idea for Lower School children! Thank you John!

Year 3 mathematicians made venn diagrams and played Bingo with their 3D shapes. The competition was fierce and the vertices, faces and edges were all quickly accounted for!

Please don’t forget to book your times with the teachers in Lower School for our Parents’ Evenings on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 February. Prep for The Week Issue Number 1913 1 February 2019

2019 - Our Year of Reading Author Visit Pupil Feedback As shown in the pages above, Author John Dougherty visited The Prep this week and was enjoyed by pupils of all ages. Here is some of their feedback: “John Dougherty visited us on Tuesday for a Writers Workshop and taught us lots of inspirational things about reading and writing. He told us that you don’t have to have the most exciting story ever, or the most famous character who ever lived. We had lunch with John and some Year 5 pupils from St John’s Primary School who were doing the workshop with us. John told us that it isn’t a very good story if it doesn’t include all five of our senses. I think he was right. With his help, I managed to produce a short, but pretty good, story. John came round to us one by one, giving us ideas for our story. I think he was great at helping us. He was also really funny. At one point, he sang this crazily silly song. I kept crying with laughter all the way through! I also met new friends at the workshop and they were very kind. I wish John Dougherty could come again!”

Flo W I was involved with the Writers Workshop when John Dougherty visited the Prep and I really enjoyed it! Firstly we met the pupils from St John’s. We then escorted them to lunch and they were amazed! After lunch we witnessed the Library being formally opened, which was great to see. Finally we started the workshop where John helped us to come up with our own stories. I think everyone really enjoyed it!

2019 - Our Year of Reading Caught You Reading Here at The Prep, we love to catch our pupils reading. All pupils have regular access to the Library, with the majority of pupils also having weekly Library lessons. Such is their love of reading, many of our pupils also love to read at breaktimes, lunchtimes and during other opportunities across the school day. For this reason, we introduced our Caught You Reading initiative last year. All staff carry Caught You Reading slips which they fill in and give to pupils when they catch them reading. These slips then go in the Caught You Reading box in the Library, and a prize is given to one lucky winner, drawn out weekly by Mr O’Sullivan. You have to be in it, to win it!

This week’s Caught You Reading Winner is...

Reader of the Week Congratulations to this week’s Reader of the Week... Ben G Prep for The Week Issue Number 1913 1 February 2019

Each week, staff in the English department, together with Miss Richardson, our Librarian, nominate one pupil who has made particular progress with, or shown genuine commitment to, their private reading.

Sport Update Netball team of the week: U10B The U10B side continued their terrific winning streak in a tough match against St Hugh’s, winning 6-4. In a tough block against a strong opposition, it was great to see these girls play with such determination.

Hockey team of the week: 6th VII After last week’s write up about the exploits of the 7th VII (who won again this week, 5-1 against Dean Close) this spurred on the mighty 6th VII to get their name up in lights. An 8-1 demolition of local rivals Dean Close was more than enough to award them the accolade this week. Excellent work everyone! Congratulations to Tilda B who played for Gloucestershire this weekend in the South West Athletics Indoor Sports hall final. After a great performance they, and Tilda, ran out as champions!

And finally... Dear Parents I attended my first pupils’ school council last week. It was an incredibly rewarding, and challenging, experience. The group of pupil representatives spoke so well and so passionately, about their school. They clearly love it but they also want to improve it where they can. There was no sense of complaint or of moaning but they had some very constructive ideas on how we can improve certain things. Packed lunches came through very strongly so watch this space on that one. They listened to each other, supported each other and demonstrated how progress can be made when people work together and show respect for each other - even when they have different views. I only wish some of our friends in Westminster could have attended they would have learnt a lot! You may remember that recently four of our most able Year 8 musicians gave an excellent concert. I am delighted to announce that Olivia, Millie, Georgia and Autumn have all

The annual staff vs parents cricket match (odd to think of, I

It will be very exciting to have it not only useable, but significantly enhanced, and will allow us to develop our outdoor learning curriculum.
