Kingfishers Update

Keep up to date

Chinese New Year

This week we have been celebrating Chinese New Year in the Nursery. We have discovered how Chinese New Year is celebrated, practiced using chopsticks and made animal masks. We have also been busy using their cutting skills to make Chinese lanterns, look out for them in the Nursery windows!

Make sure you’re following Kingfishers on twitter (@CheltKingfisher) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

Reception Artists Reception class have been looking at cave art this week. We had a brilliant time completing a collaborative art project using charcoal to create our own classroom wall art.

Snow Day Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Kingfishers had a fantastic time on Friday playing outside. The creations included mini snowmen, giant snowballs and the occasional snow angel.

A big thank you to Mrs Penny, a Classics teacher from College, who came to Lower School this week to teach us all about the beasts of Ancient Greece. The pupils loved learning about the different types of beasts but struggled to agree which was the scariest!

Chess Challengers 3S have been challenging themselves this week with Chess matches breaking out during break and lunch times. They have really enjoyed learning new skills!

Boarding House Update The Boarding House enjoyed a relaxed weekend with no Saturday morning school after a fun afternoon in the snow on Friday. There was a lot of time spent in PJs, dressing gowns and slippers, as the main aim was to chill out! As well as the usual weekend games, craft, swimming and football, on Saturday afternoon a small crew of staff and Boarders braved the weather and headed to Birmingham to watch Birmingham City play Nottingham Forest. It was a thrilling 2-0 win to Birmingham! Thank you to Miss Cox and the Gaps for leading and joining in with the fun at the Warehouse Climbing Centre on Sunday afternoon.

We have two more busy weeks before Half Term. We are looking forward to the cinema on Sunday and the Masquerade Ball next week.

2019 - Our Year of Reading Famous Author to Return Following his hugely popular visit to The Prep last week, we are delighted to be able to welcome award-winning author, John Dougherty, back to The Prep on Thursday 14 February to sign copies of his books between 12.00 and 14.00 in the Acheson Library. This will be an opportunity for pupils to purchase some of John’s books and also to bring in any John Dougherty books from home for him to sign. Parents of pupils in Kingfishers, Lower School and Middle School should have received a clarion with further information.

Accelarated Reader Bronze Award Congratulations to Tom S, our first AR Bronze Award winner with over 250 points on his book quizzes!

2019 - Our Year of Reading Caught You Reading Here at The Prep, we love to catch our pupils reading. All pupils have regular access to the Library, with the majority of pupils also having weekly Library lessons. Such is their love of reading, many of our pupils also love to read at breaktimes, lunchtimes and during other opportunities across the school day. For this reason, we introduced our Caught You Reading initiative last year. All staff carry Caught You Reading slips which they fill in and give to pupils when they catch them reading. These slips then go in the Caught You Reading box in the Library, and a prize is given to one lucky winner, drawn out weekly by Mr O’Sullivan. You have to be in it, to win it!

This week’s Caught You Reading Winner is...

Gabby L

Reader of the Week Congratulations to this week’s Reader of the Week... Georgina B Prep for The Week Issue Number 1914 8 February 2019

Each week, staff in the English department, together with Miss Richardson, our Librarian, nominate one pupil who has made particular progress with, or shown genuine commitment to, their private reading.

Sport Update Football team of the week: U10A The U10A took on St Hugh’s at football on Wednesday, a school who play more football than hockey at this age and battled to a terrific 4-3 win in a great end-to-end game.

Netball team of the week: U11B The girls put some lovely passages of play together against a determined Berkhampstead side and took advantage when shooting in the D. All the girls have clearly been working on their positioning and movement of the ball, which showed throughout the match and saw them worthy winners.

And finally... Dear Parents An inspection week is always a busy one, it certainly focuses the mind early on a Monday morning when you are pulled out of Assembly to speak to the Lead Inspector on the phone! Questionnaires need to be sent out, a myriad of meetings organised with children, staff, Council members amongst many others. What does not change is that school just moves on as normal. In the very early days of my teaching career six months’ notice was given for an inspection which allowed for both a very stressful six months and for a great many things to change. The real strength of basically just turning up is that schools are now seen as they operate day to day, therefore allowing a far more accurate picture to develop. As I said when I wrote to you earlier in the week this inspection was a Regulatory Compliance Inspection, checking that we meet all of the standards expected of schools, from education and boarding to safeguarding and health and safety. The report will not make any qualitative judgements but will simply pass or fail us on each of eight categories. Having had initial feedback from the Inspection Team we are all very positive, but the report will not be produced for roughly four to five weeks. As soon as it is, we will share the report with you in full. In the meantime, I would like to thank you all for taking the time to fill in the questionnaires and for your ongoing support of the school.

Tomorrow is a very busy day for both the present and future of The Prep as we present ‘ The Greatest Show on Earth’, our Spring Term Open Morning. With over 60 children already registered to attend and more expected on the day it promises to be a huge (and spectacular) event, with the largest number of prospective children attending for many, many years. I have resisted the temptation to don the Hugh Jackman-esque Barnum costume, but only because it really did not fit! The whole event should provide an uplifting end to an incredibly busy, but ultimately very rewarding week in the life of Cheltenham Prep.
