Kingfishers Update

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Kingfishers on twitter (@CheltKingfisher) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

100 Days of School! Kingfishers enjoyed celebrating 100 days of school this week. The children were able to complete multiple activities throughout the department all with the focus on the number 100. They decorated biscuits, built towers using 100 cups and much more. It was a great opportunity to practise counting.

Nursery Story Week Building up to World Book Day the Nursery children have been thinking about stories. They have been using their imagination and story stones to help create new and captivating tales. Their ideas were then transferred into images on our large story maps. The children also had a flipping great time on pancake day.

Kingfishers Update Pancake Day Pancakes were the order of the day on Tuesday. The children made the batter, cooked the pancakes and quickly ate them up. We made spares so that we could see how high we could toss them and then enjoyed a few pancake races.

Welsh Cakes Reception enjoyed celebrating St. David’s day on Friday. They made daffodils, welsh flags and some delicious welsh cakes.

They were set the challenge of finding out which thermal insulator would be the best material to keep the hot chocolate warmest for longest, to help the Oompa Loompas with their new hot chocolate creation. Come and visit Lower School to see the investigation poster, results and the conclusion.

Boarding House Update On Sunday the Boarders enjoyed their first London Experience. We set off after breakfast, stopping for a quick snack on the way and arrived at Madame Tussauds. We met and had photos with many famous people made out of wax; sports stars, film stars, musicians, politicians, historical figures and members of the royal family. The Boarders were able to walk the catwalk, judge on The Voice and experience a 4D Marvel Adventure too. After lunch we headed to the Cambridge Theatre to watch a performance of Matilda the Musical. This was a fantastic experience, many of the songs were already known to the Boarders and we very much enjoyed all the effects and amazing child actors, as well as the ice creams at the interval. On the return journey we stopped for supper, where the Boarders enjoyed the freedom to choose their own food and we returned to The Prep in great spirits after a fun day out.

Celebration of the Arts On Monday night an audience of nearly 100 people were treated to a variety of performances showcasing the work achieved by our 13+ scholarship candidates in the disciplines of Art, Drama, Music and DT. We wanted to create a ‘fringe’ atmosphere of spontaneity, coupled with well practised pieces which the Year 8s had prepared. The Art and DT Scholars set up stalls around the Assembly Hall, displaying their portfolios. This allowed the ‘Upper Voices’, the Actors and Musicians, to perform within a circular space. There was an interval which gave the audience an opportunity to mingle with and question the Scholars about their work. In the second half we were treated to a sneak preview of the delights in store from The Wizard of Oz later in the term. Olivia as The Tin Man, Mirabel as Dorothy and Finn The Scarecrow, all sang and danced their way through their individual pieces from the musical. The evening was wrapped up with the Art Scholars’ portfolios set to music and projected on to the large screen. 18 pupils took part in the event, they set it up, performed and excelled. It was a night they should be very proud of. Well done to all of the Year 8s involved. We hope they will inspire our Year 7s to take on the challenge in the next academic year.

2019 - Our Year of Reading Caught You Reading Here at The Prep, we love to catch our pupils reading. All pupils have regular access to the Library, with the majority of pupils also having weekly Library lessons. Such is their love of reading, many of our pupils also love to read at breaktimes, lunchtimes and during other opportunities across the school day. For this reason, we introduced our Caught You Reading initiative last year. All staff carry Caught You Reading slips which they fill in and give to pupils when they catch them reading. These slips then go in the Caught You Reading box in the Library, and a prize is given to one lucky winner, drawn out weekly by Mr O’Sullivan. You have to be in it, to win it!

This week’s Caught You Reading Winner is...

Georgia B

Reader of the Week Congratulations to this week’s Reader of the Week... Jacobo A

Each week, staff in the English department, together with Miss Richardson, our Librarian, nominate one pupil who has made particular progress with, or shown genuine commitment to, their private reading.

Enigma Project This week all of our Upper School Pupils had the opportunity to take part in a Code Breaking Activity lead by an expert from Cambridge University. They learned about the different types of coding and were shown a genuine Enigma Machine that was used in World War II. They input a message into Enigma and were able to observe it being coded. They then worked on deciphering codes such as the Atbash, Homophonic and Pigpen Ciphers, and on using Frequency Analysis to solve codes. The pupils showed fantastic focus and thinking, and it was great for them to be exposed to another application of Mathematics.

Sport Update Netball Team of the Week: U10Bs The U10Bs have kept up their winning ways and are currently unbeaten this term, which is a fantastic achievement and testament to their resilience, participation and ability to continually rise to each challenge.

Hockey Team of the Week... A very tough call this week with success in the Rugby 7s, the Cross-Country and the 1st VII qualifying for the Regionals, but the winner this week has to be the U11A boys. After watching the U11A girls qualifying for the IAPS Netball National Finals, they stepped up to win the County Hockey Cup and qualify as County Champions, through to the South West Regionals. This is not a competition open to just Prep Schools, but to every school in the country, so each stage is a great achievement. Well done boys!

Prep Pupils in Club Success Congratulations to Matilda B, Maddie A, Seb F-D (captain) and Charlie M who achieved success with Cheltenham Hockey Club over the weekend. Playing in their respective U12 sides, they won their County Finals and advance to the National Finals later this year. A fantastic achievement by all!

Notices Happy birthday to the following pupils who have their birthdays this week:

• Isabella B (5) • Charles M (11) • Hector M (11) • Trinnie N (10) • William M (9) • Archie C (7)

Cross Country Success After the Final League race, on Thursday 28 February, we had three runners that qualified for the County Championship race at St Edward’s on Saturday as well as two who were first reserves. Lois Jeveons qualified in 3rd, Matilda Barter 4th and Eme Hesketh 7th. Maddie Archer and Herbie Evans were both 11th and were first reserves. In Saturday’s County Championship race, there were 80 runners in each race, 10 from each of the 8 districts of Gloucestershire, and there were some outstanding runs from the three girls. Matilda was 6th, Lois was 13th and Eme 17th which contributed hugely to the Year 6 Cheltenham girls’ team coming first in the best district in Gloucestershire. This now means that Matilda has qualified to represent Gloucestershire at the English Schools Cross Country Championships at Loughborough on Saturday 23 March. Lois has also qualified as first reserve, so hopefully she will be there as well. This means we will have potentially four runners at the Nationals with Max and Isla-Rose already having qualified. Never before have we had so many runners get through!

And finally... Dear Parents Without a doubt the highlight of a very busy week was Monday night’s A Celebration of the Arts. It was an opportunity for some Year 8s to showcase their talents across musical, dramatic, artistic and design technology disciplines. The standard was quite extraordinary. We have so many talented pupils. Whilst maintaining a suitably modest demeanour they clearly revelled in sharing their passions and skills with the audience. It really was a special evening and Mrs Parsley, Mrs Douglas, Mr Perona-Wright, Mr Boyd and Mr Webber should be very proud of them all, and I am very grateful to them for the amazing role they all play in mentoring and inspiring the children. The importance of children learning about the arts, and of the cultural appreciation this brings, cannot be underestimated. In a technological world that demands instant gratification the understanding that time, diligence, creativity and hard work can bring far greater rewards is a key message. You will also see, in these pages, any number of fantastic costumes worn by children and staff for World Book Day. The levels of participation were total, this says so much about the school community as a whole - and with the older children leading the younger ones onto the catwalk during the ‘fashion show’, it really was an event that showed off The Prep at its best.

You will receive a letter from me on Monday which will include a link to the final report on our recent ISI Inspection. I am delighted to say that we were fully compliant in all categories. As I have written before, this particular inspection (the Regulatory Compliance Inspection) only gives a pass/fail grade across a number of categories. It does not make any further judgements. As such it is probably not the most exciting thing you will ever read but it should give you confidence that we meet every regulatory standard laid down. In approximately three years we will receive an Educational Quality Inspection which is the one which gives qualitative judgements. I hope you all make the most of the Exeat.
