Kingfishers Update At the Seaside fun!

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Kingfishers on twitter (@CheltKingfisher) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

Nursery have been busy practising their fine motor skills by threading colourful straws onto pipe cleaners and attaching them to punched holes in a decorated paper plate, to create wonderfully wibbly wobbly jellyfish, as part of our ‘At the Seaside’ topic.

Moving on up! It is almost time for our Reception children to move up to Year 1. The Reception children loved getting letters from the Year 1 classes recently. The letters told the children all about Year 1 and how much fun it would be. Reception classes are looking forward to visiting the Year 1 classes this week.

Kingfishers Update Weighty matters! This week, Year 1 have been working together to use different non-standard units to weigh and measure. We have thoroughly enjoyed using rice, fruit and water to investigate volume and capacity.

Fishy fun! We have been getting creative in Year 2! By following a set of instructions we first manipulated willow into the structure of a fish. We then wrapped it in cling film and chose a variety of tissue paper colours to complete our design.

Lower School Science Day

Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

Science Day was an amazing day of investigations, experiences and observations. Lower School enjoyed a day in which they: • Made rafts to carry eggs across the lake • Blew giant bubbles • Used a chemical reaction to blow up balloons • Filtered dirty water • Made gloop • Investigated chromatography

Prep Award Last Friday saw the Prep Award ceremony take place in the Assembly Hall, where those Year 6 and Year 8 students who had gained enough credits from completing many different tasks both in and out of school received their awards in front of their friends, families and staff. Mrs Miles introduced the evening with a short speech explaining to guests what the Prep Award initiative is about, which included video footage of the feats performed by Prep students this year and interviews with some of the award winners. We were lucky enough to have Dominic Faulkner, an explorer and adventurer (as well as being a teacher at College!), give an inspirational speech about perseverance and the skills needed to conquer challenges. With the awards handed out, it was time to celebrate and enjoy the food and party atmosphere. It was terrific to see so many people attend what is a real celebration of pupil achievement. Well done to all our Prep Award winners this year; they have embodied all that is amazing about our school community and we hope their experiences in achieving awards will serve them well in the future. We have no doubt that our award winners have provided a lot of inspiration for pupils to work towards achieving their goals next year. Finally, we must say a big thank you to Mrs Miles, who oversees the Prep Award initiative, and her colleagues on the Prep Award Committee who have worked hard to support the children this year.

Caught you reading! This week’s ‘Caught your reading!’ winner is Jacobo A.

Reader of the Week

Each week, staff in the English department, together with Miss Richardson, our Librarian, nominate one pupil who has made particular progress with, or shown genuine commitment to, their private reading.

Congratulations to Lulu P who has been named this week’s Reader of the Week!

Sporting Achievements! Equestrian fun Well done to Amelie, Daphne and Gabriella who all took part in the NSEA Showjumping competition held at Dean Close. It was a great afternoon and a fantastic opportunity for the girls

Archery success Congratulations to The Prep Archery team. Together they accumulated an impressive total of 965 points in a recent competition. This placed them 12th out of the 125 teams entered. They were winners of their area and have qualified for the county finals to compete against many other children from schools. We wish them the best of luck for the upcoming finals.

Prep pupils interview the first Briton in space! Nina and Toby took to the stage at the Cheltenham Science Festival to introduce Helen Sharman to an audience of over 300 people! Helen was the first British Astronaut in space in 1991 and the first woman to visit the MIR space station. She was at the Science Festival to share her experience and passion for space exploration. Nina and Toby had the chance to meet Helen afterwards and ask her questions that had been submitted by pupils from across The Prep. They also got to chat to TV Presenter and writer, Dallas Campbell, who showed them his incredible life size replica of a real space suit!

Staff vs Parents Cricket

Head’s Tennis Tournament

The annual Staff vs Parents Cricket Match was a contest played in the right spirit with everyone on the pitch involved with the leather or willow. The staff were lucky enough to register 163 from their twenty overs. Kudos to Mr Stanley for his great catch in the covers to dismiss Mr Boyd on 23.

Luckily the rain stayed away on Sunday afternoon for the Head’s Tennis Tournament. Thank you to all those who participated in what was a fun and competitive afternoon and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves and playing some good tennis!

Pick of the bowlers for the parents were Mr Conner who bowled 2 overs for 9 runs and Mr Cooper, 2 overs for 11 runs. The staff managed to defend their score thanks mainly to Mr Baird taking three wickets in his second over to wrap up a win for the staff. This was despite valiant efforts with the willow from Mr Hill, Mr Stanley, Mr Richardson, Mr Whitney and Mr McPherson. Many thanks to Andrew Hill for helping to organise an enjoyable afternoon’s cricket.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1928 14 June 2019

Hugh Wheatley emerged victorious, narrowly beating Mark Ashbridge by one point - everything to play for next year, Mark! Hugh takes home the Headmaster’s Tennis Cup until June next year when I hope to see more players come forward to claim the title from him!

And finally... Dear Parents After many years of hard work and preparation I am delighted to be able to announce that every one of our Year 8 children has successfully passed Common Entrance. Great credit must go to all of the teachers who have taught them so well and to you, as parents, for your ongoing support but by far the largest congratulations must go to the children themselves. We are so proud of them all. It is extraordinary to think that we are in the final run-in to the year already: Sports Day (eventually!), galas, plays, concerts and trips fill every evening and weekend before the final curtain call for the year on Parents’ Day. It has been an extraordinarily busy, ultimately very successful year. My one regret, and probably that of all Heads in their first year in post, is that it is so busy with everyone wanting to meet you, that you spend so much time in the office and not enough time out and about.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1928 14 June 2019

I am lucky that my teaching commitments, Boarding House duties, Assemblies, Year 8 suppers and other things mean that I get to spend lots of time with the children, but my time chatting to parents on touchlines, boundaries and in concert halls has been much more limited. Lots of you I feel I know well, but I am very much looking forward to being able to spend a little more time getting to know all of you over the next twelve months, watching the myriad of amazing things your children do.
