Kingfishers Update

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Kingfishers on twitter (@CheltKingfisher) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

Super Saturday Board Games Bonanza Last week’s Super Saturday gave children in Kingfishers the opportunity to take a step back in time to experience board games loved by many generations. With old school favourites such as Coppit, Dizzy Dizzy Dinosaur, Downfall, Battleships, Mastermind and much more the children were guaranteed a good time. It was lovely to see them all completely absorbed in their games, concentrating, talking strategy and laughing with one another.

Saint George’s Day Celebrations Nursery and Reception had a great time celebrating St. George’s Day. From making shields and swords to jousting, a fantastic time was had by all, finished off with a delicious homemade scone.

Lower School News Lower School are right back into the swing of things at the start of a very busy term.

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

History topics have begun and both year groups are in for a treat next week when they make their visits to the SS Great Britain for the Year 4 Explorers topic and the Corinium Museum for Year 3s’ Ancient Romans topic. Meanwhile this week Year 3 have been lucky enough to visit the opera. For many, this was their first taste of opera. The English Touring Opera Company provided a feast for the senses with some wonderful singing and amazing puppetry in this hour-long performance of Paradise Planet. Highly participative, the pupils were able to join in with some of the songs and actions as a school of fish in the oceans. The storyline of the opera took pupils on a whirlwind adventure, telling how life evolved from the oceans and encouraging them to consider the environment and how we might look after our planet.

Boarding House Update The Boarding House has got off to a great start this Term, straight outside on our first evening for a whole house game of Crocker. We have welcomed two new Boarders who have settled in so quickly it already feels like they are no longer new! Saturday evening saw the inaugural Boarders’ Quiz night with Mr Dawson and Mr Yiend hosting a fantastic evening of quizzing, with Doris’ Family coming out on top (only a few points behind the Gap Family!), a very impressive performance. On Sunday the much awaited trips to Go Ape and Paintballing were hugely enjoyed. Thank you to all the staff who helped make this first weekend so much fun. Happy Bank Holiday!

The Wizard of Oz A group of Upper School pupils performed a fabulous musical production of The Wizard of Oz. The standard of performance was superb as the cast and crew transported the spellbound audience to Kansas and the land of Oz. The teamwork really was outstanding. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Our Community of Learners A great number of Prep staff participated in a fantastic twilight CPD session with educationalist Shonette Bason Wood this week. Shonette works with schools to help staff and pupils develop a sense of wellbeing for themselves (as well as being hilariously funny!). A range of different activities, anecdotes and tools helped equip staff with strategies and ideas to further foster a sense of happiness and positivity in the school community and their own personal lives. This is one of a number of CPD sessions run at The Prep by a mixture of external speakers and internal specialists on a wide range of topics which encourage all members of our school community to be curious and continue to develop and learn. On Monday, we look forward to welcoming another group of parents in for a workshop on Building Learning Power. #lifelonglearning #communityoflearners

Which of these things make you happy? Choose three (children and adults!) and enjoy them over the bank holiday.

Year 5 Art Trip This week Year 5 visited the SATIPS National Art Exhibition. Each of our pupils had a piece of their own art on display in an exhibition that features work from over 50 different schools. They certainly enjoyed seeing their own work up on the walls for the world to see, hopefully not for the last time!

Richard Peirce Author Visit On Tuesday we were lucky to have conservationist and author Richard Peirce visit us at The Prep. He spent the morning with Year 7 and 8 talking about his new book ‘Cuddle Me, Kill Me’ which exposes South Africa’s captive lion breeding. He gave inspirational talks examining the conservationist efforts and highlighting the importance of wildlife in South Africa. It was great to see so many of the pupils engaged with this crucial topic.

To infinity and beyond! This week, everyone at The Prep is busy thinking up out of this world questions to ask to the first British astronaut, Helen Sharman. The Prep is proudly supporting Helen’s talk on 8 June at the upcoming Cheltenham Science Festival. Before she goes on stage, two of our pupils will meet Helen and take questions from pupils at The Prep to ask her. We hope to be able to share a video of the experience with you in June! Mr

O’Sullivan

Helen

Sharman’s adventure into space in assembly on Monday. During the week everyone has been writing down their best questions for Helen. Mr O’Sullivan and Scooby will be selecting their favourites to be asked to Helen Sharman in June. Keep your eyes peeled for more intergalactic updates in the coming weeks!

Sport Update Girls Cricket Report This week saw the start of girls’ cricket fixtures for the first time ever at The Prep. Every girl from Years 4 to 8 picked up a bat and bowled an over or two throughout all their matches and it was fantastic to see. We were up against Beaudesert, a school already in their second year of girls’ cricket, however, our girls played extremely well for the amount they have played, demonstrating some spot on fielding as well as taking wickets. Ignoring the typical British summer weather, the girls all showed up with enthusiasm and a great attitude and should be so proud of how they played. We won’t have a team of the week this time as every team deserves the accolade. Well done all!

Girls’ Cricket Results U13A vs Beaudesert Lost by 47 runs U13B vs Beaudesert Lost by 52 runs U13C vs Beaudesert Lost by 41 runs 4th XI vs Beaudesert Lost by 68 runs U11A vs Beaudesert Lost by 7 runs U11B vs Beaudesert Lost by 15 runs U10A vs Beaudesert Lost by 71 runs U10B vs Beaudesert Won by 10 runs U9 Blue vs Beaudesert Lost by 70 runs U9 White vs Beaudesert Lost by 54 runs

Boys’ Cricket Results

Boys’ Team of the Week - U11A The clear team of the week is the U11A boys who have started the season in great form. On Saturday they bowled out a representative side, the Cheltenham and Cotswold District XI, in under an hour and knocked off their total with ease. They backed this up with a very impressive win over Beaudesert on Wednesday, hitting 170 off the bat and then bowling out the opposition for just 53, giving them a 120 run win. Special mention also to the 4th XI who had a good win over Beaudesert with a number of boys taking wickets in their first ever cricket match.

And finally... Dear Parents The pictures here of the new outdoor learning area really can’t do justice to the environment that has been created. You must take the opportunity to have a look for yourselves at the new Outdoor Classroom in the woods around the Lake and the new education and social area on the island in the middle of the Lake. Our only problem so far has been trying to fit everyone in to use it, it has been so popular. The opportunities the children now have to both learn within an outdoor environment and learn about the same environment are extensive. I have just googled ‘the benefits of outdoor education’ and, as you might imagine, got completely swamped by a huge list of benefits. You can do the same and whichever one you think is the most important, be it developing different learning skills, building self-confidence, health and wellbeing, developing collaborative learning or simply having more fun learning: it really doesn’t matter, every single child will experience it during their time at The Prep. I must a say a huge thank you to a number of very generous OJs and parents who have helped to make this possible so quickly. Please do come and look! I hope everyone has a fantastic Bank Holiday.
