Kingfishers Update Maypole Fun

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Kingfishers on twitter (@CheltKingfisher) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

The children have been practising their Maypole dancing and then performed to the parents on Friday afternoon. The children skipped to music and went around and in and out, making a pretty ribbon pattern.

French Day The Nursery children were set a Charlie Cheetah Challenge to build the Eiffel tower.

Space Exploration Reception are really enjoying their space topic. So far they have made a giant space mural, rockets that zoom to the moon, experimented with how gravity stops a ball point pen from working and made a lunar landscape for small world play. What will next week bring...?

Kingfishers Update Year 1 French Day Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed French day! We tried different French foods, built the Eiffel Tower and made French flags. C’Êtait superbe!

Oceans & Continents Year 1 have been learning about continents and oceans this week. We found out that the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean and over 70% of the Earth is made up of water.

Rugby Star Session Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed their science lesson with Gloucester Rugby Assistant Coach Jonny Bell and superstar player Ollie Thorley. They discussed the importance of exercise for building stamina, being strong and flexible as well as keeping their heart strong and mind sharp. The children then completed different activities to raise their heart rate!

Lower School News

Keep up to date

Lower School have had a busy and exciting week. We opened our Reading Shed, Year 3 visited the Corinium Museum in Cirencester and Year 4 spent a day at Brunel’s SS Great Britain in Bristol.

Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

Year 3 learnt how the Romans lived, what they wore, what games they played and what they ate in an exciting and interactive day at the museum. They all decided that the clothes were “scratchy and uncomfortable!” Making their own mosaics was one of the major highlights of the visit. Year 4 visited the SS Great Britain to find out what life would be like on board a ship as an early explorer. We found out about sleeping quarters, food, uses of the ship and of course about the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Did you know the first English Cricket team to play in Australia was transported by the SS Great Britain? Did you know that 1,600 troops and horses were taken to the Crimea War by the SS Great Britain? We learnt so much!

Sport News England Netball International joins our team! We are delighted to announce that former England international and Superleague champion Sam Cook is to join Cheltenham College as Director of Netball. Sam currently plays in the Vitality Netball Superleague for Severn Stars and will lead on all coaching and development for netball players at The Prep and College. Across our schools over 1,000 pupils participate in sport each week and Sam will play a big part in continuing this fantastic level of activity. Sam is originally from Cheltenham and attended St John’s, one of our partner schools. She has represented England Netball at every age group, including U17s, U19s, U21s and Seniors. Sam says: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining Cheltenham College at this stage in my career. As a youngster I played netball here on the courts by The Prep. It really feels like coming home to be returning as Director of Netball. I cannot wait to get started.”

Skiing Success Congratulations to Joey R who took part in the GB Alpine Ski Championships in Tignes over Easter. This involved a week of racing in three different Alpine disciplines (Giant Slalom; Slalom and Combi) over three days. The competition was tough, being the highest level of British children’s ski racing, and conditions were very challenging as the race pistes became very icy and rutted. Joey held his nerve, skiing brilliantly and with real confidence on the first day of racing to achieve a Bronze Medal in the under 10 Giant Slalom. Joey also placed 7th in the Combi on the Wednesday and 10th in the slalom event on the Friday. Well done Joey!

Chicks and Tadpoles In Science lessons this week Year 5 have been studying the life cycles of different animal groups. They have been very excited to be able to watch eggs hatching and caterpillars turning into chrysalises first-hand. We have also been out to the Science block pond and collected some tadpoles to look at. It’s all springing into life in Science this week.

Reader of the Week

Each week, staff in the English department, together with Miss Richardson, our Librarian, nominate one pupil who has made particular progress with, or shown genuine commitment to, their private reading.

Notices Happy birthday to the following pupils who have their birthdays this week:

• Jean-Christian L (9) • Eden R (6) • Molly R (13) • Ruby P (4)

Outdoor Learning We hope that you have had the opportunity to see the outdoor classroom space that has been developed alongside the Lake – the children are really enjoying the project, and we have had some wonderful support from OJs and parents towards the project. We are planning a project for the summer which will improve the Assembly Hall (as a meeting, activity and theatre space) and would be very pleased to talk with any parents who might want to support us on this project. Please do contact Christiane Dickens in the Development Office on c.dickens@cheltenhamcollege.org or 07881 850206.

And finally... Dear Parents Mrs Amanda Grieves, the current Head of Lower School, will be stepping down at the end of the academic year to embark on new ventures outside of education. We are very grateful for the dedication that Mrs Grieves has given to both the Lower School and the wider school community, and we wish her all the best in her new life. I am delighted to announce that Mr Andy Theedom has been appointed as Mrs Grieves’ successor. Whilst he will officially take up the post in September, he will be working very closely with Mrs Grieves and Mrs Buttress over the coming months planning for the next academic year. Mr Theedom is a current member of the Lower School team, working as a Year 4 Class Tutor. This is a role that he has enjoyed for the last six years and during that time he has become a well-established member of staff in this department. Mr Theedom has previously worked as the Head of Lower School and is therefore familiar with both the expectations and challenges of the role.

Prep for The Week Issue Number 1922 10 May 2019

As a very experienced teacher within the lower Key Stage two phase, Mr Theedom is looking forward to continuing the excellent practice in Lower School and building on this for the future. Mr Theedom will be involved in a number of transition activities between now and the end of the term and looks forward to meeting as many parents as possible over the next few weeks before officially starting the role in September. Otherwise it’s been another fun filled but busy and hard working week in the life of Cheltenham Prep. Have a great weekend.
