Kingfishers Update Informal Concert It was wonderful this afternoon to witness our Kingfisher boys and girls showing off their musical talents. They surprised us all with their confidence and control. They played and sang with aplomb. The wonderful programme was a mix of solo and class performances and it was lovely to see the result of their hard work in music lessons this year. After the tension of the informal concert was over, what a treat it was for the children to further impress their parents by showing them their fantastic work and achievements in the classroom.

Globes In Year 1 we are learning about the continents of the world and have made our own pâpier machÊ globes. We enjoyed getting messy and think they are amazing!

Super Saturday Art Attack! Years 1 and 2 were able to enjoy some awesome art activities with Mrs Parsley in the Art Studio on Saturday. They challenged themselves with some aerial painting and also got to create their own Hedgehog family using clay. What a great way to start the weekend!

Kingfishers Update Kingfishers French Day

Keep up to date

Quelle journée! It was such a delight to see everyone in their impressive outfits, an array of ‘bleu, blanc et rouge’, strings of ‘oignons’, ‘des moustaches’, ‘des bérets’ and even a Coco Chanel, a Musketeer and some famous French joueurs de Rugby et de Foot! It was fantastic to see everyone involved and speaking French throughout Kingfishers. All embraced the day.

Make sure you’re following Kingfishers on twitter (@CheltKingfisher) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

All of the pupils enjoyed singing many French songs throughout the day, ordering croissants and pains au chocolat at snack time and some were treated to a new French story read by Mme Carson and another by Mme Allen. Many pupils built huge Eiffel Towers for a competition and painted amazing flags and rainbows to practise their French colours. Some played a game of ‘la pétanque’ outside and others researched the location of famous French landmarks and found many of Paris’ attractions, watching part of Mr. Bean’s holiday adventure. We were lucky to have some Year 8 French scholars come and teach Year 2 some French playground games outside and some indoor matching animal games too. Reception pupils also got to meet the scholars and they played a lotto game together, learning new foods. Year 2 also did a quiz and enjoyed learning about many aspects of France’s culture. There was a lot of tasting of new foods and enjoying the relaxing, atmospheric accordion music. It almost felt like being in France in a café. At lunchtime the pupils all ordered in French – un sandwich au fromage ou au jambon et des glaces…. au chocolat, à la fraise et à la vanille. C’était délicieux! We all got to enjoy a little French film and particularly enjoyed watching a slideshow and video of ourselves in an assembly at the end of the day. Thanks for making it a day to remember. Merci tout le monde!

Lower School News Art, English and History This term Year 4 have been practising their powers of arm-twisting, cajolery and coaxing in English, by writing persuasive letters to Mr O’Sullivan and attempting to sweet talk him into letting them have a class pet. They came up with many reasons for having a creature in the classroom, with many focussing on the benefits provided by having an ear that will listen, but will not respond with anything more than a look. Budgies, goldfish and spiders were all mentioned for their contribution to Science topics, but by far and away the favourite was a puppy – methinks Scooby may need to come down and sit in class, in order to be read to.

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

In Art, we have been printing in Year 4, whilst Year 3 have been busy creating ‘wild’ art. Finally, in History, whilst the Year 3s look at The Romans in more detail, the Year 4s have begun to undertake independent research into explorers and discoverers with a view to producing booklets of information relating to the men and women who have led the way in exploration. Who knows where this may lead our intrepid nine year olds in the future.

Year 6 trip to Weston-super-Mare Before we left for Weston-super-Mare the vibe was great as everyone was very excited to go to the beach. The journey was swift and we were all talking, laughing and singing. As soon as we arrived, we couldn’t wait to go on the sand. At the beginning we were put into groups and were asked measure the wind speed and the temperature at six different points on the beach. To make sure that we were accurate we had to test it three times. Then we had lunch of sandwiches, crisps, fruit and water – delicious! Once we had finished our lunch we were allowed to play on the sand. It was so much fun. Everyone was playing rugby having a great time. Afterwards we walked over to the sea wall. Mr Newson explained to us about hard engineering, which uses different materials like steel and a sea wall then soft engineering which uses environmentally friendly materials and natural materials. At the very end we had some ice-cream. We had an educational and fun day, and a very big thank you to Mr Newson, Miss Cox, Mrs Simpson, Miss Sheehan, Mrs Reid and Mr Yiend. Thank you very much for a great day!

Year 7 girls enjoy Cyber Day Mr Webber, Mr Morton and Mrs Leach took a group of Year 7 girls to a Cyber Day to encourage women into STEM subjects. The girls took part in coding and cyber-related activities involving remote controlled robots, LED cubes and even computers run entirely with marbles. They also had talks from women in STEM including a manager from Raytheon and a member of the Cyber Team from Greater Manchester Police. Ellie said “It’s amazing that there are so few women in engineering but inspirational to see the efforts to bring so many more into the industry”. Karly said “I really enjoyed the LED cubes because the coding was interesting” and Daphne thought that the day was “great and I loved the robots!” while Naomi like the Turing Tumble challenge “as it taught me about logic, problem solving and binary”.

Year 8s stand out at Salters’ Institute of Chemistry A team of our four most able Chemists enjoyed a fantastic day at Bristol University yesterday, competing in the annual Salters’ Institute Festival of Chemistry. The children spent the day in the University labs battling to complete complex Chemistry challenges against 14 other schools from the South West area. The challenges were designed by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Salters’ Institute and the teams were judged on their understanding of the principles of Chemistry, practical skills, team work and safe lab practice. Our pupils performed brilliantly and were awarded 3rd prize in the first challenge. A great, fun day was had by all and they gave a performance to be proud of.

Boarding House Update The Boarders enjoyed the improved weather over the weekend, with plenty of time spent playing outside. On Sunday lots of Boarders volunteered to play in the Charity Tennis Tournament. It was great fun and a tough competition. Pablo and Ed did brilliantly to make it through to the Final. Well done to all who entered, there was some great enthusiasm as well as tennis on display! Thank you to Dr Gilmour and Mrs Wells for their organisation and running of the event. Games and football on the field followed and then a walk into town for some Bowling in the afternoon rounded off the weekend nicely. Thank you to Mr Jenkins for taking the trip. We hope the weather holds for our trip to the Aquapark next weekend.

Sport News Boys’ Team of the Week - The 1st XI The 1st XI have gone through a tough schedule of four games in six days and come through with four great wins. It started on Friday night with an evening T20 against King’s Gloucester on College Field with the boys winning by eight wickets. On Saturday they beat Pinewood by 41 runs. Tuesday saw the first round of the County Cup with a dominant win over the Cup holders The Crypt by nine wickets, meaning we play the Cotswold School on Monday in the Quarter Finals. The boys saved their best to last and yesterday pulled off a stunning last ball victory over a much-fancied Dean Close side. A great week for the boys. Special tip of the helmet this week to some of the big scores recently - Herbie E (U11A) who hit 100 n.o. v Dean Close. Monty W (U11A) who hit 54 n.o. v King’s Glouc and 50 n.o. v Dean Close. Jack S (U11A) for his 54 n.o. v Beaudesert. Cody W (2nd XI) for his 88 n.o. v Pinewood.

Girls’ Team of the Week The Severnside Cricketers On Wednesday a group of Year 6 girls travelled off to Chepstow to take part in the Severnside Cricket event. Many of the schools in the tournament had been playing cricket for more years than our girls, but our team more than played their part. They played with real determination and went down to a few tight losses before finishing the day with a dominant win over Wycliffe. Well done Girls.

And finally... Dear Parents A question often asked of Prep School Heads is ‘what makes your school different?’. There are any number of answers to this question, but all Heads will talk (hopefully!!) about incredibly happy children, a stimulating learning environment and dedicated teachers who provide the highest possible academic and pastoral care to the children. Now clearly all schools will do these things to a greater or lesser degree and
