Kingfishers Update Nursery Transition Fun As part of the Nursery transition to Reception the children have had two opportunities to visit Kingfishers this week. They visited the Kingfishers patio for a lunchtime play and came to explore the Reception Outdoor Classroom with Mrs Reeves and Miss Farr.
Bring your Parents to Forest School The sun was shining when Reception and Nursery invited their parents to get muddy in Forest School on Saturday. We had a great time making bird feeders, building bug houses, and an adults v Children tug of war, which the children won! Reception had the opportunity to show their parents their gardening skills by planting some baby carrots which are now starting to grow! We had a lot of fun and can’t wait for next time.
Open Morning Kingfishers had a fantastic morning looking at different endangered species. Activities included making snow leopard door hangers, elephant masks and having their faces painted.

Kingfishers Update Weston-super-Mare On Tuesday Year 1 and Year 2 went to Weston-super-Mare. We had a lovely time going on the pier where we had a talk about Weston and the Grand Pier in the olden days. We learned about how it got burned down twice! We loved the Museum of Memories where we saw all sorts of old toys, food, an old kitchen, forms of transport and all sorts of things about life in the past. After a hearty traditional lunch of fish and chips we were able to enjoy the fantastic sunshine on the beach. We built sandcastles, found sea shells and watched the metal detectorist look for exciting things. On the way home in the bus we had a lovely nap to round off our day. (Written by 2G)
Year 2 Fixtures On Monday afternoon Year 2 enjoyed their return fixture away at Dean Close. Our boys and girls played several mini – matches and then were accompanied to the dining hall for delicious doughnuts with their hosts. Their play was impressive, with lots of goals scored, great teamwork shown and lots of very good stick work on display. Particularly of note was the great spirit of sportsmanship mixed with competitiveness that I am sure will continue as the teams meet in future fixtures throughout their Prep School lives.

Lower School News This week saw the whole of Year 3 and 4 take part in the Lower School Maths Challenge. The pupils were split in to teams and took part in six different mathematical rounds of quizzes, practical activities, problem solving and exciting challenges.
Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!
The challenge proved to be great fun, with every pupil working enthusiastically for his or her team. Most challenges involved problem solving and effective teamwork. A selection of Year 8 pupils helped out to assist teams and also mark the work to help find the eventual winners. The top three teams were: 1) WINNERS = Maths Wizards 2) RUNNERS UP = Human Calculators 3) THIRD PLACE = Multiplication Stars Overall, the morning was a great success, with all pupils working extremely hard and having lots of fun at the same time as completing lots of fun maths.

The Canterbury Tales In 1387 Geoffrey Chaucer, a man of some regard in London, wrote a set of stories called The Canterbury Tales. A motley group of people travel from The Tabard Inn in London to the holy shrine of the martyr Thomas Ă Beckett in Canterbury Cathedral, a place of pilgrimage from medieval times until now. Year 6 have performed the story of the pilgrims and four of their tales.

Boarding House Update The Boarders have enjoyed a fun final weekend before Half Term. Saturday afternoon saw some football being played before the watching of the FA Cup Final. This was swiftly followed by our Eurovision party! Those watching took notes and decided on their top three, these were compiled and Spain came out top in our vote. We were a little disappointed in the actual results, though enjoyed the entertainment value. On Sunday afternoon Mr Patterson and Mr Yiend led a trip to the Cotswold Park and Beach to go on the Wibit Aquaventure. It was “one of the best Sunday trips I’ve been on” said one of the group! We look forward to a rest over Half Term and the final weeks of the Year.

Karting Champions Last Saturday, Oscar P, Sofia G, Oliver W, Joanna R and Jacobo A had their first taste of a race day in the Goblin kart they have constructed and tested. Once we had made a few mechanical adjustments, the children were flying around the drag race and slalom, along with twenty other teams (twice as many as last year!). The whole event required strong team work and organisation on the children’s behalf. They did not disappoint! However, even though they did the school proud in every aspect, unfortunately, it was not enough to bring any silverware home on this occasion. Having said that, the experience they had taught them so much and all were left smiling and exhausted. Well done to all and a big thank you for the parental help before, during and after the event.

We continue to celebrate our 2019 Year of Reading here at The Prep. At the forefront of this has been Accelerated Reader for our pupils in Years 5, 6 and 7. As we approach the halfway point of the final term of the year, here are some highlights. Pupils in these year groups have read over 93 million words They have passed over 2,700 book quizzes between them. Our ‘Millionaires Club’ is expanding all the time, with 16 pupils who have individually reached over a million words in Accelerated Reader books since September. We now have seven Double Word Millionaires, three Triple Word Millionaires, and our very first Quadruple Word Millionaire! As part of the celebration of our 2019 Year of Reading, you may recall we have also introduced Bronze, Silver and Gold Reading Awards for our highest achieving readers, and I am delighted to report that six pupils have already received Bronze Awards for attaining 250 points on Accelerated Reader quizzes. However, we also have not one, but two Silver Award winners too, who have each surpassed 500 AR points this year. The contest to see which House is meeting the most reading targets also continues, and as we approach the half term break, Persia House now hold a slender lead over Athens, closely followed by Troy House. It continues to be a fabulous response to Accelerated Reader across all three year groups, ably supported by the efforts of our Librarian, Miss Richardson, and the English department in engaging our young readers. We would also like to thank all those parents who continue to encourage their children at home with their reading; the strengths of Accelerated Reader very much depend on a successful partnership between the school and home.
The May Half Term Reading Challenge To maintain this excellent progress with reading over the short break, we are encouraging all our pupils from Year 3 right up to Year 8 to continue to read as much as possible in their spare time, and for this to be recorded in their Reading Record booklets, which all pupils have been

given. The English department and the Lower School team will have some special prizes to award to the pupils in their classes who have made the most progress with their reading over the Half Term holiday. How can parents help? 1. Please continue to support your children with their reading whenever possible: the more they read, the better! If you’re ever in need of ideas for excellent books to borrow or buy, we really recommend https://schoolreadinglist.co.uk – it has some fantastic suggestions for books which are split into different age categories and genres. You may also find the Accelerated Reader Bookfinder website useful when searching for books for your children: http://www.arbookfind.co.uk The website offers an Advanced Search option which allows you to refine your search in detail. 2. Please do ask to see your children’s Reading Record on a regular basis. Talk to them about their reading, and even better, read with them, or allow them to read aloud to you or other members of the family. 3. Lastly, please sign your children’s Reading Record at least once before they return to school after the half term break. With thanks for your continued support of reading.

Sport News Boys’ Team of the Week - The 2nd XI The 2nd XI continued their superb winning run with a 70 run victory over St Hugh’s. After great wins over Dean Close and Pinewood the boys are in great form in the lead up to Clifton. According to Mr Bass it is the team ethos that is driving the team on to such success. Well done fellas.
Girls’ Team of the Week U13A Tennis The Upper School tennis girls headed over to The Dragon for their fixture on Wednesday. The first round of matches were quite evenly matched with the Prep girls just coming out on top. The second lot of matches saw our girls find a new gear and up their play, coming out decisive winners. A lovely day for some impressive tennis where everyone played to their potential, well done girls!
Olympic Torch Athletics Teams from Year 3 to Year 6 went to St Edward’s for the annual Olympic Torch Athletics Meet. Cheltenham took a massive lead after a dominant performance in the middle distance races, but were pegged back in the short distance races. After some great performances in the relays the team finished in 3rd place overall. A great result from our team.

Environmental campaigners of the future! Following a very powerful assembly delivered by our Year 8 scholarship set on the very real threats of climate change, our pupils were delighted to receive a reply to their letters to Alex Chalk, the Member of Parliament for Cheltenham. Mr Chalk responded to their concerns about climate change and outlined various campaigns he has been involved in locally to help reduce emissions. He has offered to come in to school and answer more of our pupils questions, so watch this space!

And finally... Dear Parents It is very hard to believe we have reached the half way point in the year’s final term! With so much going on the weeks really do rush by. Looking at the calendar for the final weeks of term things are only going to get busier! If the children are to get the most out of all the incredible things on offer then it is crucial that they have a fun and relaxing break over the coming week, so they can come back refreshed and ready for every challenge. I am delighted to announce that Georgie Twigg will be our guest of honour on Parents’ Day, and that she will be presenting the prizes. Georgie was a key member of the GB women’s hockey team that won gold at the Olympics in Rio. I have no doubt that she will entertain and inspire with stories of her journey and that the children will love meeting and talking to one of Great Britain’s most successful recent sporting stars. Enjoy Half Term.
