Kingfishers Update BLP Day

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Kingfishers on twitter (@CheltKingfisher) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

Building Learning Power (BLP) is all about developing good learning habits from an early age. Lots of fabulous learning has happened this week. The children enjoyed a whole day dedicated to our BLP Super Squad characters. We carried out activities which allowed us to explore using different learning skills. We earned stickers every time we used a Super Squad skill. Lots of us went home covered in stickers!

Cotswold Farm Park Visit The Reception children enjoyed a trip to Cotswold Farm Park this week. You can watch some turkey-related highlights from their trip at www.twitter.com/CheltPrep

Kingfishers Update We The Curious Trip The Reception children were thrilled to have the opportunity to become fully qualified Space Explorers on their school trip to ‘We the Curious’. The children were in awe as the roof to the planetarium opened and they could see the night sky. Blasting off into space to visit planets within our solar system and playing games such as ‘pass the planet’ was extremely exciting. They were then able to take part in the hands-on activities designed to spark interest and scientific thinking skills. There were lots of sleepy children on the bus journey home!

Superhero fun! Year 1 have loved creating their favourite superhero out of playdough this week. They have begun thinking about becoming their own superhero identity and the adventures that they will get up to.

Lower School News Year 4 Prep Awards Lower School pupils who have worked hard this year to complete their Prep Awards Log Book received their awards this week. They have completed a whole range of activities for community and leadership, for collaboration and teamwork and for personal endeavour.

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

A few examples of the activities pupils have been involved in are: running races for charity, fundraising cake sales, hosting visitors, taking part in performances, joining new clubs, music exams and individual or team sporting achievements. Well done and congratulations to all of those pupils who achieved their Bronze award this year.

Buried Treasure! An ancient coin was uncovered this week outside Lower School. Our budding archaeologists unexpectedly uncovered the coin whilst digging. After closer inspection were have discovered that the coin is a 1855 Napoleon III Centime. This has encouraged further investigation from our intrepid time detectives!

Mia performs at The Everyman Congratulation to Mia who got to perform on stage recently at The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham. Mia was part of the cast supporting the touring production of ‘Fly Eddie Fly’. Mia showed great commitment to her rehearsal schedule and performed brilliantly on the night. Well done Mia!

Reader of the Week

Each week, staff in the English department, together with Miss Richardson, our Librarian, nominate one pupil who has made particular progress with, or shown genuine commitment to, their private reading.

History News Scholars’ History presentations As a part of the History Post Scholarship Programme, the pupils usually produce a presentation on a historical theme and have to prove why their chosen topic is the most significant. With ‘Brexit’ dominating the news headlines and political scene since 2016, we felt it was fitting to explore other significant political events that have made the UK what it is today. This year the Scholars have researched four Significant Political Events of the UK, chosen by them, including: Abolition of the Slave Trade (Jude and Ed) Execution of Charles I (Autumn, Finn and Will) Founding of the NHS (Izzy, Bella and Toby) Suffragette Movement (Molly and Nina) On Monday 3 June, the Scholars presented to the school during assembly. The audience, having brought a pen with them, listened carefully to the speeches and then voted on their voting slip for the event which they thought was the most significant. The votes were then counted up and the results were as follows: Founding of the NHS - 165 votes Execution of Charles I - 51 votes Suffragette Movement - 35 votes Abolition of the Slave Trade - 27 votes The Scholars put a lot of time into their speeches and worked hard on the different aspects of their presenting skills. For some of the pupils, their designated topic wasn’t strictly what they felt was the most significant and they did really well to still appear to be passionate about their subject regardless of their own views. The presentations were of a very high standard and they all did brilliantly. Congratulations in particular to Izzy, Bella and Toby for their piece on the Founding of the NHS, which clearly captured the thoughts of the audience on the day.

And finally... Dear Parents There are many benefits about being a Prep school at the heart of Cheltenham, but surely the greatest is the access that this gives us to world class Science, Music, Jazz and Literature festivals. This week The Prep has taken full advantage of having the Science Festival on our doorstep with various trips to science shows and activities. We have even had visitors from the festival in our own science labs discovering the wonders of this fantastic subject under the guidance of Prep staff. The feedback from pupils and visitors has been outstanding. Tomorrow the Science Festival welcomes to the stage Helen Sharman, the first British Astronaut. Two of our pupils, Toby and Nina, will be introducing Helen to a live audience and then interviewing her afterwards too. They will be putting questions to Helen that have been written by pupils from across the school. Expect answers to everything from ‘What does space smell like?’ to ‘Is it better that we send robots rather than humans to Mars?’.

If the weather intervenes and there are any changes to sports day plans they will be communicated to you through the usual means. Please do check before you leave the house as, at the time of writing, the weather is questionable! Whether it is tomorrow or in the coming weeks, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at various events over the final weeks of the Summer Term. Have a great weekend.
