Barclays is proud to be sponsoring the Cheltenham Jazz Festival for the first time in 2010. Paul Harvey, Head of Barclays Corporate, Cheltenham, said “Jazz brings pleasure to hundreds of thousands of people across the globe, and our sponsorship of this leading Festival right here in Cheltenham creates a positive emotional link between music lovers and our brand everywhere. This sponsorship is a very important element of our marketing mix, helping us in our ambition to be one of a handful of banks leading the global financial services industry. The strategic fit clearly resonates with Barclays own business development and aspirations as well as benefiting local businesses and the local community in Cheltenham. We are hugely excited to be connected with one of Europe’s leading jazz festivals in this way.”
BBC Radio 2 is delighted to be continuing its support of jazz in its many forms and of course its association with the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. This year BBC Radio 2 will be presenting Friday Night is Music Night in a tribute to Frank Sinatra and broadcasting a special live show featuring Paloma Faith and an orchestra led by Guy Barker. The line-up of the Jazz Festival continues to thrill and this year will be showcasing Jamie Cullum, John Scofield, Elaine Paige and Eric Bibb. We do hope you can join us for this truly international Festival.
Time goes quickly when you are enjoying yourself, they say. It certainly has for us at Budweiser Budvar. When this year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival opens it will mark our fourth year, by popular demand, as official beer of the Festival, and we are still enjoying every minute of it. The truth is that our Budvar beer and Cheltenham jazz are a perfect match for each other. Both offer great sensory experiences, oral and aural, and in combination we make an awesome team. May it ever be so, and we’ll drink to that.

There are moments in art that catch us and move us out of our daily patterns. Whereas rhythm and pitch may be expressed as mathematical formulae, and musicians know the techniques by which they produce a certain sound, no scientist or musician can explain the power that music has over our emotions. The Norwegian Embassy is delighted to be working with Cheltenham Festivals. We firmly believe that festivals give us the opportunity to experience other people’s artistic expressions, knowledge and experience and to see and hear the world through other people’s eyes and ears. One of our tasks is precisely to facilitate cultural exchange in order to promote cultural and artistic development.
HAVE A GO... Ever wanted to learn to play the piano like Jamie Cullum? Or get back into playing the drums? This year, we have partnered with Yamaha to host a series of group workshops where you can learn to play a range of Yamaha instruments whilst at the Festival. Come down to The Playhouse Theatre on the day and sign up for a 30-minute workshop, where a Yamaha-endorsed teacher will guide you through some great music.

Barclays Cheltenham Jazz Festival is delighted to be working closely with the Norwegian Embassy to develop a Norwegian strand at the 2010 and subsequent Jazz Festivals. The Norwegian jazz scene is now one of the strongest in Europe and much of its pre-eminence is down to the excellent jazz course at Trondheim University; we have therefore set up a scheme whereby students from Trondheim will join students from the jazz course at Birmingham Conservatoire to rehearse and perform in several groups during the 2010 Festival. We also have a strong programme of established Norwegian artists with the great Farmers Market, singer Beady Belle and Food; the collaboration between Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen and UK saxophonist Iain Ballamy. Stewart Lee’s Freehouse
Having seen me enjoying various improvised music gigs over the years, Tony Dudley-Evans of the Barclays Cheltenham Jazz Festival thought he could exploit my tenuous f-list celebrity comedian status to promote an improvised music strand this year, as if I were some kind of fat Jamie Cullum from an alternate dimension. So, in conjunction with Tony and leading local musician Chris Cundy, I’m delighted to be co-selecting three days of top acts, all brilliant examples of the preconception shattering wonder that is improvised music, from 60s veterans to the pioneering prodigies of tomorrow. I’ll be presenting the shows on Saturday and Sunday – make a life-changing ticket purchase today.
