Cheltenham Festivals Book It! for schools 2010

Page 1

Welcome Welcome to the 2010 Book It! for Schools programme I am delighted to present our exciting programme for 2010 and hope you will find something here to wow and excite your pupils, from the power of storytelling to the thrill of seeing illustrations come to life in front of your eyes. We welcome back some old favourites such as king of comedy, Jeremy Strong, and David Almond, whose new novel Mina’s Story is the long-awaited companion volume to Skellig, and is all about the power of imagination. Tony Ross, Nick Butterworth and Nick Sharratt not only tell wonderful tales but will be drawing too, and James Mayhew brings to life the history of art in a unique way through the eyes of Katie, who climbs through picture frames and into adventures. We are thrilled to introduce Cressida Cowell who will tell you all about the exploits of her hero Hiccup, the reluctant Viking, and the poet Gervase Phinn whom many of you will know from his hilarious stories of life as a school inspector. Linking in with KS2 history, Stewart Ross will set up a trial of Henry VIII live on stage, and Caroline Lawrence will immerse you in her Roman Mysteries. We have also programmed some fantastic hands-on workshops about Roman life, presented by the world-renowned Corinium Museum from Cirencester. Why not travel the world with Sally Grindley, become a hero or a villain with the Two Steves or find out about Greek Beasts and Heroes with Lucy Coats. We are very lucky to have Ben Crystal, whose Shakespeare on Toast is a brilliantly user-friendly romp through Shakespeare. Roald Dahl fans can get an exclusive insight into the life of one of our best-loved authors, and younger readers can discover some of Dirty Bertie’s horrid habits with David Roberts and Alan MacDonald! Please do come and try these wonderful authors. If there is an author or book you would like to know a bit more about, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01242 570782. I am always happy to talk about authors and books! Jane Churchill Book It! Director

FAQs I am thinking of bringing children from my school to the Book It! programme; how do I find out whether tickets are available? All your enquiries and bookings are handled in person by the Education team at Cheltenham Festivals. You can request tickets by email, phone, or use our online booking form. If an event is sold out, we can advise you on other events that still have capacity, and which your children might enjoy. If you have a child in your group with special needs, let us know, and we can make sure that they are catered for. Fill out the booking form at cheltenhamfestivals.com/bookitbooking or email education@cheltenhamfestivals.com I don’t know exactly how many pupils will be in my class in the autumn term; how many tickets should I book? Do I have to pay for the tickets as soon as I book them? We realise that this is a common problem for schools, and so we give you until 10 September 2010 to confirm your final numbers. After this date your tickets are non-refundable. Your tickets will be sent to you, and an invoice, which the school can then pay in the normal way. I am a bit nervous about bringing a large group of younger pupils to the Festival; how well organised is it? We think that it is very well organised! (And from our feedback, our visiting schools think so, too.) All school groups are met in person when they arrive at Cheltenham Town Hall and escorted to their event. All the venues are easily accessible. Festival staff are on hand to help seat your party, and are always available to deal with any queries that may arise. We would like to meet the author after the event; can our children bring their own books to be signed? If children already have a copy of an author’s book, they are very welcome to bring it to be signed after the event in the Festival Book Tent, where other books by the author will be sold as well. You can place an advance order of books to be signed direct from Waterstone’s. Please contact them directly – speak to Barbara Pendreigh on 01242 5717790. We want to bring packed lunches with us, is there anywhere to eat them? Lots of schools have lunch during their visit to the Festival. There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves. In case of rain, we have some limited cover to keep you dry! Is there anywhere to park? Where should our coach pull up? There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses around the Town Hall, but the area will be busy, so please allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several public car parks within a few minutes walk of the Town Hall. Coaches should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before the start of your event. Coaches can pull up at the front of the Town Hall for disembarkation but must then wait at a dedicated coach parking area until pick-up time.
