The School programme brings a real vibrancy to the Festival weekdays, with hundreds of pupils buzzing around the site absorbed in all things literary, engaging with authors and getting stuck into exciting workshops. We are delighted that our partnership with The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival continues to make this possible. As one of the UK’s leading publishers, Nelson Thornes has a wealth of experience in providing engaging books and interactive activities to enhance and enrich the learning experience. We work with the National Literacy Trust and other key bodies to offer a broad range of fiction and non-fiction resources which are designed to enthuse and inspire your pupils. We are passionate about encouraging young minds to develop a love for reading and storytelling, and are particularly pleased to have extended our partnership with the Education department at Cheltenham Festivals this year. The exciting programme of activities planned for 2012 promises to engage as many children and young people as possible, providing them with the stimulation to get really involved in literature and appreciate reading for pleasure. We hope you and your pupils will be inspired to take part in this year’s Festival, and that you will enjoy exploring all the different opportunities that it provides, including poetry, art, Latin, storytelling and much more. WELCOME FROM JANE CHURCHILL Welcome to the 2012 Book It! for Schools programme. It has been a pleasure putting this year’s fantastic programme together; we are so lucky to have such a wonderful range of authors and illustrators attending the 2012 Literature Festival. We hope you will find plenty of events to enthuse and excite your pupils, from the power of storytelling to the magic of seeing live drawing on stage! And don’t forget to check out the other opportunities (pages 17 - 19), a range of additional activities for all key stages. Some highlights for KS1 include a trio of renowned author/ illustrators: Korky Paul, who claims to be ‘The World’s Greatest Portrait Artist’; Debi Gliori, whose wonderfully warmhearted stories and pictures deal with familiar childhood incidents; and festival favourite Emma Chichester Clark talking about how her little dog Plum has inspired her new stories. And we welcome back Jeanne Willis, master of the comic storyline. This year we have two wonderfully inspirational storytellers: Lari Don, an award-winning storyteller from Scotland who loves collecting and sharing stories from around the world, and Elizabeth Laird, who mixes her love of stories from Iran and Iraq with fascinating tales of her travels in those countries. We are thrilled to welcome back Caroline Lawrence, Cressida Cowell, Michelle Paver, Sally Grindley and Vivian French, who will all be talking about their latest books in their well-loved series as well as new departures. If you would like to find out how inventions changed the world come and hear renowned broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis; or meet Roger Stevens, one of the UK’s funniest poets for children. He will run two poetry workshops as well as perform poems and exerpts from his new novel The Comic Café. And to celebrate the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth, award-winning author and illustrator team Mick Manning and Brita Granström will share stories and artwork about his extraordinary life. For KS3/4/5 we welcome back the brilliant Ben Crystal, whose passion for Shakespeare’s language brings the bard to life in a way you have never seen before, and philosopher Stephen Law will discuss those all-important questions about what it means to be alive. Finally we are delighted to welcome celebrated writer Anthony Horowitz. This is a rare opportunity to meet the master of thriller and adventure writing for young people, so do make sure you book your tickets early! Please do come and try these wonderful authors. If there is an author or book you would like to know a bit more about, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01242 570782. I am always happy to talk about authors and books! Jane Churchill Book It! confirmation via email. If an event is sold out, we can advise you about other events which your pupils might enjoy. Your booking is now confirmed, and it cannot be cancelled without penalty. The full cancellation policy can be found at this link: www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/ education/planning-your-visit We realise that you may not know exactly how many pupils will be in your class in the autumn term. You have until 12 September 2012 to notify us of any minor adjustments to the number of tickets you have booked caused by fluctuations in class sizes. We will try to accommodate these changes if tickets are available, but may be unable to do so. The school finance office will receive an invoice for the full cost of your booking by the end of September 2012. You will receive a separate ticket document, which you should bring with you to the Festival. You will also receive an information letter containing important information pertaining to your visit.

There is a lot to consider when undertaking a school trip; how well organised is the Festival? We think that it is very well organised, and from the feedback we receive, our visiting schools think so too! Festival staff meet and greet you when you arrive at Cheltenham Town Hall and then escort you to your first event. All the venues are easily accessible. Festival staff will help seat your party, and are always available to deal with queries and give assistance. Advice for preparing a risk assessment will be available on our website. www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/education/planning-your-visit

We would like to meet the author after the event; can our children bring their own books to be signed? If children already have a copy of an author’s book, they For all activities at a glance see page 6

are very welcome to bring it to be signed after the event in the Waterstone’s Festival Book Tent, where they can also buy other books to be signed. If you don’t have time to stay and meet your author, you can order books in advance from Waterstone’s to be signed at the Festival. Waterstone’s can also organise signed book plates for your pupils. For more information about book orders contact Barbara Pendrigh at Waterstone’s on 01242 571779.

We want to bring packed lunches with us, is there anywhere to eat them? Lots of schools have lunch during their visit to the Festival. There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves. In case of rain, there is some limited cover to keep you dry!

Is there anywhere to park? Where should our coach pull up? Coaches should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before the start of your first event. Coaches should pull up at the front of the Town Hall (GL50 1QA) for disembarkation but must then move on and wait at a dedicated coach parking area until pick-up time. There is free parking for coaches at Cheltenham Race Course (GL50 4SH) www.visitcheltenham.com/info/15/plan_your_visit/158/coach_ drivers_information There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses around the Town Hall, but the area will be busy, so please allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several public car parks within a few minutes’ walk of the Town Hall.

What else is going on? There’s lots going on for all key stages, including some free activities. Please see page 12 for details of our free LEGO® Education workshops and pages 17-19 for other exciting opportunities. Brand new this year is our screening of Macbeth for KS4 & 5, delivered in partnership with Cineworld and Digital Theatre. See page 19 for details. Don’t forget to take part in the Discovery Trail, sponsored by Dean Close Prep School. The trail is a literature themed quiz-based activity for children (and adults!) of all ages. Winding its way through Imperial Gardens, the Discovery Trail is free, and is the perfect activity to fill breaks in your itinerary.

A recent poll of teenagers found Shakespeare to be the least favourite read of those consulted. And yet we owe to Shakespeare at least 1,700 words and a horde of well-known phrases that we all still use today. Back by popular demand, Ben Crystal brings the bright words and colourful characters of the world’s greatest writer wonderfully to life, offering the key to understanding Shakespeare’s plays and unlocking the so-called difficult bits. Ben Crystal will knock the stuffing from the staid old myth of Shakespeare, revealing the man and his plays for what they really are: modern, thrilling and uplifting drama. www.bencrystal.com
