Welcome! …to our 2009 Book It! for Schools programme. For an increasing number of schools across Gloucestershire and beyond, a visit to the Cheltenham Literature Festival is a keenly anticipated highlight of the new school year. In this, our 60th anniversary year, we welcome some of the biggest names in children’s literature to Book It! The versatile literary superstar Anthony Horowitz, author of the Alex Rider series is back after an absence of several years, and if you missed Anne Fine and Michael Morpurgo’s sell-out appearances last year, you will be delighted to know that they are both back in 2009. Also returning is Julia Donaldson, the legendary creator of The Gruffalo, with her new show, Songbirds. Michelle Paver previews the last instalment of her hit Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, and Gillian Cross talks about why she can’t shake off the Demon Headmaster. The unique Philip Ardagh takes us on a visit to Henry’s House, and Rose Impey and Shoo Rayner perform a delightful double act as they go Animal Crackers! With wacky mathematician Kartjan Poskitt, ecowarrior Nicola Davies and the creator of the Mortal Engines series, Philip Reeve, to name but a few, we are sure that you will find something to delight and intrigue your pupils in our programme. New for 2009! In response to your feedback over the last two years, we have introduced more workshop events for smaller groups: On Wednesday 14 October, our 2-hour Ancient Egypt package for KS2 includes an interactive history workshop with Lucy Adlington, and the opportunity to hear Gill Harvey, the creator of the Ancient Chronicles series. For details see page 3. On Friday 16 October our Jackie Morris package for KS2 gives children an opportunity both to see Jackie talking about her books and to have an illustration class with Jackie herself, complete with crayons, paper and expert tips from a truly inspirational teacher. For details see page 3. Both these packages cost £9.00 per child, and places are strictly limited. Whether you choose to come to one event or several, we look forward to welcoming you to the Cheltenham Literature Festival this year. Jane Churchill Book It! Director

FAQs I am thinking of bringing children from my school to the Book It! programme; how do I find out whether tickets are available? All your enquiries and bookings are handled in person by the Education team at Cheltenham Festivals. You can request tickets by email, phone, or fill out an online booking form. If an event is sold out, we can advise you on other events that still have capacity, and which your children might enjoy. If you have a child in your group with special needs, let us know, and we can make sure that they are catered for. In the first instance, please contact Nicola Tuxworth on 01242 775822 or email nicola.tuxworth@cheltenhamfestivals.com. You can also fill in a booking form via our website cheltenhamfestivals.com/education I don’t know exactly how many pupils will be in my class in the autumn term; how many tickets should I book? Do I have to pay for the tickets as soon as I book them? We realise that this is a common problem for schools, and so we give you until 11 September 2009 to confirm your final numbers. After this date your tickets are non-refundable. Your tickets will be sent to you, and an invoice, which the school can then pay in the normal way. I am a bit nervous about bringing a large group of younger pupils to the Festival; how well organised is it? We think that it is very well organised! (And from our feedback, our visiting schools think so, too.) All school groups are met in person when they arrive at Cheltenham Town Hall and escorted to their event. All the venues are easily accessible. Festival staff is on hand to help seat your party, and are always available to deal with any queries that may arise. We would like to meet the author after the event; can our children bring their own books to be signed? If children already have a copy of an author’s book, they are very welcome to bring it to be signed after the event in the Festival Book Tent, where other books by the author will be sold as well. Some schools like to order books in advance to be signed, and this can be organised through Waterstone’s. For details please contact Nicola Tuxworth. We want to bring packed lunches with us, is there anywhere to eat them? Lots of schools have lunch during their visit to the Festival. There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves. In case of rain, we have some limited cover to keep you dry! Is there anywhere to park? Where should our coach pull up? There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses around the Town Hall, but the area will be busy, so please allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several public car parks within a few minutes walk of the Town Hall. Coaches should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before the start of your event. Coaches can pull up at the front of the Town Hall for disembarkation but must then wait at a dedicated coach parking area until your departure time. Booking opens 8.30am on Wednesday 10 June. To book, please contact Nicola Tuxworth on T 01242 775822 F 01242 256457 E nicola.tuxworth@cheltenhamfestivals.com W cheltenhamfestivals.com/education

Emma Chichester Clark, award-winning and much-loved author and illustrator, will delight her audience by drawing, showing how she creates her characters and story-telling. Emma uses a PowerPoint presentation, so that everyone can see the pictures and read along. Here is Emma, talking about her work… I started drawing just about as soon as I could hold a pencil. But I could never find enough paper and my mother wouldn't let me use her Basildon Bond. So secretly I used to tear the blank pages out of her grown-up books and draw on them and make my own little books. I think books for children should be wild and adventurous. They should offer you something you can escape into….. http://magicpencil.britishcouncil.org/artists/clark/

In fact, I’m quite excited because I’ve started to hear a sound, sometimes like a distant rumble of thunder, sometimes like a raindrop close to my ear. It’s the sound of people changing.
