Sponsors of the Science Festival Education Programme British Energy, now part of EDF Energy, is delighted to be Cheltenham Science Festival’s education partner for a second year. Welcome to those of you visiting the festival for the first time - and welcome back to those of you who have visited the festival before. Regardless, we hope the festival will inspire and excite your pupils about the world of science. Cheltenham Science Festival brings science to life in a way that is inspirational and relevant. But the greatest appeal is the enjoyment in seeing hundreds of excited children (and adults) discover what science means to them in their every-day lives. It is quite simply the most exciting place to be for both young and old with enquiring minds and a passion for knowledge. From the interactive Discover Zone where children can carry out their own experiments to the fun of the numerous events and workshops, plus the opportunity to interact with real scientists, the festival provides an inspirational experience for people of all ages. Becoming part of EDF Energy has also opened up another opportunity for us to work directly with schools and teachers through programmes such as the Pod - the first port of call for any teacher, pupil, parent or governor wanting to make their school greener and more sustainable. To find out more visit www.jointhepod.org. We are pleased to continue our support of the festival and hope that it will inspire young people to become the scientists and engineers of tomorrow.
Bill Coley Chief Executive Officer British Energy
We are delighted to welcome British Energy, now part of EDF Energy , as our education partners for a second year. From events delivered by expert speakers to interactive workshops, our school programme is packed with activities that will bring science alive for pupils at all key stages. We hope that your visit to Cheltenham Science Festival will be exciting, thought-provoking and memorable, and we look forward to welcoming you in June.

How does a plane fly? Why does a hot air balloon rise? What is an air vortex? Join Acid Alex from Mad Science for spectacular, unique experiments and discover how powerful the air around us can really be. If you’re really lucky, you might even ride the Mad Science hovercraft! Acid Alex joined Mad Science, the world’s leading science education providers, in 2008, after years of experimenting in his garden. This allowed him to perform his favourite experiments on a daily basis in front of an audience who were also intrigued by science. Racing from school to school to show off his various science “tricks” in assemblies and teaching in-school workshops, he has found the best part is the enthusiasm he gets from children and adults alike.

Who are we and where do we come from? Join festival favourite Dr Alice Roberts to find out how genetics, archaeology and fossils come together to provide the answer. Trace our ancestry back to Africa and follow the small group of pioneers who went on to populate the rest of the world. Through stones, bones and genes, the story of our incredible human journey unfolds.
Dr Alice Roberts
Dr Alice Roberts is an anatomist at Bristol University. A qualified medical doctor, she teaches anatomy to medical students and surgeons. She is also involved in research looking at ancient human remains; she is interested in what skeletons and bones can tell us about human evolution, and about diseases that have affected us over time. She has written and presented television series and books to go with them, including Don’t Die Young and the forthcoming The Incredible Human Journey (BBC2). Her favourite bone is the clavicle.
