Welcome to Science for Schools Our flourishing Science for Schools programme is now in its 9th year. Packed with events and interactive workshops to astonish, inspire and inform, our school programme will bring science alive for pupils at all key stages. From Science Stories for KS1, to whole-day packages for KS3, there really is something for everyone this year. Whether you visit for an hour or for a day, we look forward to welcoming you in June. Our thanks go to EDF Energy and all our supporters, whose help is invaluable in making Science for Schools happen. Philippa Claridge Education Manager Cheltenham Festivals
British Energy, part of EDF Energy, is delighted to be The Times Cheltenham Science Festival’s education and principle partner. A big welcome to everyone visiting the festival this year. Those of you who have been before will know the festival is a spectacular environment to engage and inspire your students about the exciting world of science. The Times Cheltenham Science Festival really makes science relevant to children: through taking part they discover how science works and what it means to them in their every-day lives. It really is the most exciting place to be for everyone (adults included) with enquiring minds and a passion for science. The festival offers a varied programme of activities from the interactive Discover Zone, where children can carry out their own experiments to the engaging events and workshops. As part of EDF Energy we have the opportunity to work directly with schools and teachers through our sustainable schools programme the Pod. This is the first port of call for any teacher, pupil, parent or governor wanting to make their school greener and more sustainable. To find out more visit www.jointhepod.org We are committed to the STEM agenda and are delighted to continue our support of the festival. We hope it will inspire young people to become scientists and engineers in the future. Dr Andy Spurr Managing Director British Energy – part of EDF Energy

A Practical Guide School events Unless stated otherwise, all events take place at one of the Town Hall venues and last for one hour. The only exceptions to this are some of the day package events, which take place at Cheltenham College Junior School or St Andrew’s Church Hall – all within easy walking distance of the Town Hall. Your booking confirmation will make this clear. Our at-a-glance guide to school events is on pages 5 and 6.
ExperiTent Workshops The ExperiTent offers science workshops to class-size groups, and for 2010 we are again offering a packed programme of hour-long workshops for Key Stages 2 and 3. These workshops tend to sell out very quickly, so early booking is advisable.
Discover Zone Explore the world of science in the Festival’s free Discover Zone, with interactive science for all ages and enthusiastic presenters ready to answer all your questions. One-hour slots are available throughout the day but must be booked in advance for school groups. Priority will be given to schools booking an event or an ExperiTent workshop.
Day Packages for Key Stage 3 Thursday 10 and Friday 11 June Why not spend a day at Cheltenham Science Festival, and let us organise it for you! For the second year, we have put together a special series of day packages for Key Stage 3 pupils. Packages comprise an extended hands-on science workshop, an event, and a guaranteed hour in the Discover Zone. Last year these packages proved extremely popular with schools, so reserve your places early. Day packages are available for up to 40 pupils in each session. Further details on pages 9-13.

To Infinity and Beyond KS2
Will humans ever visit other planets in our solar system or even reach distant stars? How did the Universe begin? Do aliens exist and will we ever be contacted? What does a black hole look like? 2009 NESTA FameLab finalist and science teacher Simon Foster takes you on a guided tour around the solar system exploring our neighbouring planets and the Sun, before heading out to visit distant stars and planets in our galaxy and beyond. Simon Foster studied Physics with Space science (so he’s a qualified rocket scientist!) at the University of Southampton and stayed on to undertake a PhD in Solar-terrestrial Physics. Simon has recorded a 3-Minute-Wonder for Channel 4 and is currently working on a new climate change programme to be shown next year. He is also working with NASA to update the education facilities at a number of observatories in the United States.

John Allen challenges you to design and build a turbine that will allow a vehicle to drive directly into the wind. Test your own designs in the wind tunnel to check they work and see which design travels the fastest. John Allen runs the INPUT programme of engineering problem solving activities, which was launched in 1985. Since then around 200,000 young people from 9-18 years old have participated in an INPUT course. Their aim is to support the development of the next generation of highly qualified science and technology personnel, through challenging but fun problem-solving projects. www.input.uk.com

The National Physical Laboratory is one of the UK’s leading science and research facilities, helping the nation measure things. This has included remotely detecting the ripeness of cauliflowers and making the most accurate clocks in the world. NPL’s water rocket competition evolved from some fun at a barbeque in 1993 to a major annual event, and their expertise was stretched when they built a water rocket powered car for The Gadget Show. Workshops based on the competition have since proved very popular with local schools and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive including from one teacher, “The kids had a wonderful time and lots of the parents have commented on the enthusiasm shown by the children when they related their day.”

A fantastic and unique opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of a real-life operating theatre! KS3 SS36 12 - 1pm KS4 KS3 SS37 1.30 - 2.30pm KS4 KS4 SS38 4.30 - 5.30pm KS5 This year we are showcasing a simulated operating theatre developed by a team at Imperial College, London. This theatre is used to train medical students who want to become surgeons, and is incredibly realistic. Capacity is strictly limited to 20 students in each session, and all participants will take part in both activities. Why not bring your science club or a group of gifted and talented students? The event consists of two activities: 1) Watch a real surgical team at work using key-hole or open surgery to deal with an internal problem that needs to be located and stitched. 2) Participate first hand in a minor operation. Taking on the role of either surgeon or patient, students will participate in an operation on a simulated fatty growth, under the expert guidance of a real surgeon. All equipment will be provided. NB The third session (SS38) is particularly aimed at students who are considering going on to study medicine.

Young Scientists’ Day An opportunity for Gifted and Talented pupils 9.15 - 3 pm Cheltenham College Junior School
KS2 Year 6
Our Young Scientists’ Day is a fantastic opportunity to introduce your gifted and talented Y6 scientists to hands-on experimental work in fully-equipped laboratories, led by the science team at Cheltenham College Junior School. The children will spend the day in the school’s labs, working in groups of 10. Come and investigate the capabilities of the human body through three practical sessions covering biology, physics and chemistry. This year’s theme is Peak Performance. Session 1: Energy to Burn An investigation into the food that fuels our bodies. Burn foods in the lab and measure their calorific content to discover which are the greatest suppliers of energy to the human body. Protective clothing will be provided. Session 2: Vital Organs! A closer look at the organs that drive the human body. Dissect some of the organs that are common to all mammals to gain a clearer understanding of the internal workings of our bodies. Participation in dissection will be optional. Session 3: It’s Tough at the Top A voyage into the extremes of human limitation.
