WELCOME to THE HSBC CHELTENHAM JAZZ FESTIVAL 2008! Jazz in all its moods can be found at this year’s HSBC Cheltenham Jazz Festival... We have jazz legends and young guns, club nights and jazz standards, big bands and soloists, from funk to fusion, Latin to soul, hip-hop and… the experience is yours to choose. For seven days and nights Cheltenham will swing its hips to the greatest performers in jazz today. The incomparable Eartha Kitt drops by for her only UK appearance. Cleo Laine and John Dankworth celebrate their 80th birthdays with some classic jazz standards. Jools Holland front woman Ruby Turner offers her inimitable signature of soul and when you’re ready to groove, Imelda May dares you to resist. Take a journey with Courtney Pine inspired by the virtuoso Sidney Bechet, then discover the legends of the future with our Jerwood Jazz Generation featuring Soweto Kinch, saxophone ace Iain Ballamy and post-punk band leader Pete Wareham. Exclusive UK performances by guitar artist Bill Frisell and drum legend Jack DeJohnette are not to be missed. Van Morrison, with his new album, will leave you on a blues induced high. Coming down, opt for a little Billie Holiday performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra or the blissful intimacy of Gwyneth Herbert. Funkster Maceo Parker shakes the chandeliers at the Town Hall with special guest Dennis Rollins, while star of the club scene Gilles Peterson brings Jose James, Elan Mehler and Tawiah to town. If you can dance the distance Mr Scruff ‘keeps it unreal’ for 270 minutes! If that isn’t enough, ex-Buena Vista frontman Roberto Fonseca serves up his own brand of Cuban groove and DJ Nicola Conte joins the BBC Big Band for Bossa Nova with a contemporary twist. With free music at the Budvar Jazz Marquee over the Bank Holiday weekend, eclectic Fringe events, Sunday’s Family Breakfast show, schools’ concerts and masterclasses, there really is something for everyone. Where will you be?

As part of the Fringe programme, the University of Gloucester will be hosting a Big Band Extravaganza – from swing to strings to free jazz and beyond. There will be an open improvisation workshop and a chance to participate in a performance of music dedicated to the great Sun Ra. All musicians, and instrument or voice, of any ability, are welcome. Start times are approximate and most gigs are free and do not require a ticket but please check with the venue beforehand. The venues reserve the right to vary the advertised programme without notice and refuse admission. Look out for the final programme of events and map of venues in April.
BUDVAR JAZZ MARQUEE The Jazz Marquee, sponsored by Budvar, returns this year and will be hosting events throughout the weekend. The stage will provide a platform for local performers with highlights including the Budvar Brewed Jazz performance, Jazz It Up! and the Jazz Services Stage. So drop by and sample some great free music.

FAMILY & EDUCATION JAZZ ISN’T JUST FOR GROWN UPS! Join in the family fun at HSBC Cheltenham Jazz Festival The family and children’s events at HSBC Cheltenham Jazz Festival are a core element of the programme. Ticket prices are kept as low as possible – and under 18’s are half price – so join us for a Bank Holiday weekend of fantastic live music, entertainment and masterclasses…
The Breakfast Show The Destroyers Event J29 For this year’s ever-popular family breakfast show, the dynamic and daring Destroyers bring their Balkan inspired jazz act to the Town Hall Main Stage. Bring the family and enjoy breakfast, the Sunday papers and exhilarating music. Suitable for all ages from 1 to 125!
Family Fun Day Event J30 Come along and enjoy some free Jazz Festival family fun in Imperial Gardens. With lots of activities from bouncy castles to circus tricks, and live music from local schools as part of our Jazz It Up! project, there is plenty going on in the Gardens. Suitable for all ages.
Masterclasses Event J16 & J21 Join our selected festival musicians as they take us through the ups and downs of performance and improvisation. Suitable for teenagers and adults.
Jazz It Up! Saturday 3 May, Sunday 4th May, 11am – 2pm, Jazz Marquee Our jazz education project, Jazz It Up! is a fabulous showcase for the many gifted young musicians in Gloucestershire schools. In 2008 the bands will entertain you in the marquee with an array of styles from big band and swing to soul and funk. Jazz It Up! also offers schools the opportunity to work with some of the most talented young artists appearing at the Festival. This year’s young artist, composer and pianist Dave Stapleton, celebrates the centenary of author Ian Fleming’s birth, with a special Bond theme arrangement as part of each’s schools repertoire. To cap it all the performances will be compèred by actor and trumpeter Colin Salmon, M’s Chief of Staff in three iconic Bond movies. Unmissable.
