Welcome

Welcome to the 14th annual Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival The 14th annual Budvar Cheltenham Jazz Festival once again promises a great line-up of established names and rising stars. The beauty of this event is the chance to get up close and personal to the artists in the intimate setting of this charming Cotswolds town. The place comes alive with all kinds of al fresco performances and, quite literally, dancing in the streets. All senses will be catered for and you should keep an eye out for the dozens of places around town serving our daily changing festival cocktails and special ‘soul food’ menus. Our Artistic Director, Tony Dudley-Evans has once again put together a programme that showcases the finest in contemporary jazz with a wide swathe of acts from the broader musical family, covering everything from flamenco to funk and salsa to rockabilly (yep, welcome back Imelda May). Besides offering great names like Nigel Kennedy, Hugh Masekela and Madeleine Peyroux, the 2009 festival offers some fantastic one off performances you’ll never see anywhere else, ranging from our stunning jazz gospel project with the Ruach Choir and guests including Mica Paris, Jack DeJohnette with the Jerwood Jazz Generation to a unique take on jazz from the human beatbox artist, Beardyman. The Stuart Holmes Fringe Festival is bigger than ever this year with dozens of acts playing for free in venues around the town. Also gratis, you’ll be able to catch after-hours jam sessions in the Hotel du Vin that will run late into the night. The best value however comes from the fact that we’ve managed to cut ticket prices across the board as well as introducing a brand new Cheltenham Festivals’ membership scheme (see page 21). If you like music you’ll find something you want to see at this year’s festival. To make your own personal choice visit our web site at www.cheltenhamfestivals.com and on the jazz pages you’ll be able to read more about the acts and crucially, listen to musical snippets from every artist. Lastly our handy little musical icons (see key below) will give you extra clues. So work out your own programme of musical perfection and come and join us for the party. We would like to thank Festival audiences, commercial sponsors, donors and trusts for their continued support and enabling us to continue to bring world class performances to Cheltenham.

Although practically everybody agrees that our Budweiser Budvar beer is the ultimate in drinkability nobody has ever managed to define exactly what that means; likewise our relationship with the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. All we can say is that it works superbly. The chemistry between us is brilliant, the jazz and the beer combining in a fantastic sensory experience. That’s why as a world class beer we are so thrilled to be sponsoring this world class festival for the third year running.

BBC Radio 2 is delighted to be continuing its long association with the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and to be able to take our audiences on a superb listening experience. This year BBC Radio 2 will be presenting Friday Night is Music Night with a special tribute to the music of Billy Strayhorn and the BBC Big Band will be performing with Dave Liebman. The line up of the Festival continues to thrill and will be showcasing the fast up and coming Imelda May, South African Jazz legend Hugh Masekela and the sultry tones of Madeleine Peyroux. We do hope you can join us for this truly international Festival.

The Jerwood Charitable Foundation is dedicated to responsible and imaginative funding of the arts in the widest sense. As well as Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Foundation also supports Take Five with PRSF and Serious, a new Jerwood Opera Writing Programme at Aldeburgh Production, the Jerwood Studio at Sadlers Wells, and other initiatives in art, dance, drama, music, literature and poetry.

J01 The Daffodil £40 (£35 restricted view tables) inc. three course dinner. £15 (upstairs bar seats) inc. a glass of house wine or bottled beer served with a Daffodil Hors d’ Oeuvres & Canapés selection. Dinner guests must be seated by 7.15pm, bar guests by 8pm. Music begins 9pm. Signed to Brighton’s ultra hip Tru Thoughts label (home to Quantic & Bonobo), Lizzy’s vocal style and her band’s arrangements owe as much to cutting edge soul as to the jazz style of Sarah Vaughn and Peggy Lee. A Jerwood Rising Star at Cheltenham three years ago, we’re very pleased to welcome her back for what will be a chic night at the Daffodil.

The Ruach Mass Choir with Guests: Mica Paris, Ian Shaw, Alex Wilson & Jason Yarde J02 GL1 Gloucester Leisure Centre 7.30pm £10 adult / £5 U16’s

Our opening concert brings together the worlds of jazz and gospel in a unique collaboration between one of the UK’s best gospel choirs and some heavyweight names from the jazz & R’n’B scenes. The choir will also be running workshops in schools before the concert and inviting those children to take part. The result will be a combination of over 150 voices with some very special musicians and soloists. Uplifting and inspirational.

J03 The Daffodil £40 (£35 restricted view tables) inc. three course dinner. £15 (upstairs bar seats) inc. a glass of house wine or bottled beer served with a Daffodil Hors d’ Oeuvres & Canapés selection. Dinner guests must be seated by 7.15pm, bar guests by 8pm. Music begins 9pm. The Guardian summed up Lea by commenting that she “talks like a coffee grinder and sounds like a cross between Ella Fitzgerald and a Broadway diva”. She combines cool swinging jazz with in your face comedy - she was the first openly gay comic to appear on national television in the States. A unique and unforgettable performer.

TG Collective

J04 Pittville Pump Room 7.30pm 90mins £10 A glorious combination of flamenco, jazz, hotclub and contemporary classical influences underpin this superb Birmingham based group. An exciting sensuous sound described rightly by The Times as “stylish…very stylish”.

J05 Dakota 8pm £10 Standing

Whether it’s her infectiously unique fusion of rockabilly, blues and jazz, her extensive self-penned repertoire or her distinctive interpretation of classic standards, Imelda May’s appeal is both seductive and undeniable. She returns to Cheltenham following a hugely successful year which has featured numerous TV and radio appearances including Later with Jools Holland and the release of her brilliant album Love Tattoo on UCJ.

Soul Jazz Orchestra + Lack of Afro + DJ’s Pete Isaac (Jelly Jazz), Cool Cut C J06 Subtone 9pm 300mins £10 Standing

Two bands redefining the deep funk experience for the 21st century. The Soul Jazz Orchestra hail from Canada and draw their main inspiration from the Nigerian afrobeat of Fela Kuti. London based LOA are signed to Freestyle records and their monumental debut album, Press On, led to production requests from Tom Jones, Andy Smith and Shaznay Lewis.
