Welcome to The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival for Schools Programme 2022. We’re so excited to welcome you to our Festival Village on Montpellier Gardens from 7-16 October for the second year of our theme Read the World. We’ve got a fantastic line-up of writers, poets and industry professionals for you this year, including Carnegie Medal winner Sarah Crossan, fantasy writer Jonathan Stroud and Lucy Strange, who will be sharing her approach to writing gothic fiction. Come and be inspired by our industry panels The Write Job for KS4 and KS5 with guest speakers including Darren Charlton, Ione Gamble, Manon Steffan Ros and Yomi Sode, experience a poetry masterclass with Luke Wright or cheer on students from local Secondary Schools as they compete in our Battle of the Books live debate chaired by author Julian Sedgwick. After your event, be sure to head over to the Waterstones Bookshop to meet the authors and have your questions ready. Finally, if you’re looking to reinvigorate reading for pleasure in your school, sign up for our Reading Teachers = Reading Pupils Conference on Tuesday 11 October. See you at the Festival! Beyond Words Join us at VOICEBOX at the Literature Festival for a free event launching an exciting creative writing for wellbeing resource for young people and their teachers. This new resource has been created by writer and poet Caleb Parkin in consultation with previous students from our Beyond Words project (20152021). Look out for the VOICEBOX zine later in the year for more information.

Struan Murray: Orphans of the Tide The Garden Theatre KS3 Year 7 £6.50 per pupil Where do stories come from? Dive in with Scottish author Struan Murray as he takes you on a journey through his breath taking fantasy series Orphans of the Tide, and introduces readers to Eternity Engine, the dramatic conclusion. Struan will explore the different places story ideas can come from, as well as giving the audience the opportunity to create their own fantasy adventure. £7.99

The News: Fact or Fake? The Hive KS3 Year 7 £6.50 per pupil Meet the team behind the award-winning children’s news magazine The Week Junior. Editor Vanessa Harriss and art director Dave Kelsall will be joined by journalist and television presenter Nick Sheridan (Breaking News). Together they reveal how to write the perfect news report, what goes into creating a front cover and why it’s important to be able to distinguish between true stories and fake news. If you want to know more about making magazines and develop the skills to spot misinformation, this is an event you won’t want to miss. £9.99

Battle of the Books: Read the World The Hive KS3 Years 8, 9 £4 per pupil How do authors create empathy in their books? Is it the characters, the setting, the language, or something else? After taking part in our Read the World reading challenge earlier this year, five selected secondary schools have each elected one student to champion the book they feel builds the most empathy with a culture other than their own. Take part in this lively debate, hosted by award-winning writer Julian Sedgwick (Tsunami Girl) as you and our three eminent judges determine the winner. Supported by our programme partner Gloucestershire Library Services. £9.99

Julian Sedgwick: Calming the Ghost The Den KS3 Years 8, 9 £7.50 per pupil Following on from the themes of empathy, trauma and healing raised in Julian Sedgwick’s novel Tsunami Girl, this workshop explores the power of settings – particularly abandoned places – to fire the imagination and generate story. Julian’s research in the Fukushima Evacuation Zone will introduce you to the world of Japanese ghosts and yōkai to help you create your own abandoned spaces and a witness character to explore them. Who – or what – will emerge from that setting and will you along with your classmates and witnesses be able to “calm the ghost”? £9.99

Cheltenham Festivals’ Reading Teachers = Reading Pupils (RTRP) programme has been running for seven years, annually reaching 9,000 pupils across the country through a network of teachers’ reading groups. Join us for a conference that will empower and equip delegates to bring books to life in the classroom. A host of authors and literacy experts will contribute to a day of professional development centred on reading for pleasure. With keynotes, a panel discussion on Reading the World and a choice of workshops led by literacy organisations, researchers and writers, the programme offers a holistic approach to inspiring young people to read. Aimed at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 practitioners, whether you are a senior leader, NQT, experienced classroom teacher or librarian, the RTRP conference will give you the tools and practical ideas to refresh your practice, engage your pupils, and ignite their love of reading. Tickets includes the full day’s programme, including two workshops of your choice. Details will be sent following your booking request. HOW TO BOOK How do I book tickets? Go to cheltenhamfestivals.com/learning-participation/literature-for-schools and complete the booking form; booking opens at 8am on Tuesday 14 June 2022. Please note that a £5 booking fee will be applied to each booking. Terms and conditions apply.
Is there a bookable lunch space? We offer 20 minute lunch slots in our covered picnic area in the Festival Village for a limited number of schools. Please request a reservation on your booking form and we will accommodate as many as we can.
What happens next? 1. We will review your booking form and be in touch to discuss alternative options if any of your choices are not available. 2. You will receive a formal booking confirmation via email. 3. P lease notify us of changes to your numbers as a result of fluctuations in class size by 9 September 2022 and we will do our best to accommodate them. 4. Your school finance office will receive an invoice after 9 September 2022. It is important this invoice is paid before you attend the Festival. 5. We will be back in touch in September with your ticket document and further information about the facilities on site.
