WELCOME TO CHELTENHAM JAZZ FESTIVAL Once again we’ve collected some of the finest jazz artists from around the world and here in the UK to perform for us at the Festival. This year’s line-up also includes some of the biggest names in blues, club and pop, and some comedy too.

I’m delighted that Jamie Cullum is returning as Guest Director. As well as performing his own solo set which will feature new previously unheard material alongside some of his superb back catalogue, he will also be bringing some of his favourite acts to Cheltenham, including Susanna and Roots Manuva & Bonobo Live.

My highlights include; Overtone Quartet - a true jazz supergroup led by bassist Dave Holland, Cleo Laine, Pharoah Sanders and our celebration of the innovative British musician Django Bates. I’m also excited about hearing authentic R’n’B from guitarist James Hunter, Andy Sheppard’s Trio Libero, Portico Quartet, and the exhilarating transatlantic collaboration that is Big Air. I also can’t forget to mention the unique Horne Section, a jazz-infused comedy show led by Alex Horne.

Jazz on the Square, our vibrant outdoor site, will be at the heart of the Festival again in Imperial Gardens. There will be a wide range of food stalls, a bigger and better jazz market, a CD and merchandise store, bars, and of course the fantastic Budvar stage which will play host to a wide range of music across the weekend – and it’s all for free! Visit cheltenhamfestivals.com/jazz for a taste of what’s to come, and to listen to some of the great jazz from the Festival’s stars. Be sure to book early. Tony Dudley-Evans, Artistic Director

THE NORWEGIAN FORMULA The Norwegian Jazz scene is one of the strongest in Europe, so we’re honoured and delighted to have been able to work closely with the Norwegian Embassy to bring some of the brightest and best Norwegian jazz talent to the Festival this year.

Tord Gustavsen

Some of our favourite acts are coming, including Tord Gustavsen, Stian Westerhus and Susanna. We’ve also invited back students from Trondheim Conservatory Department for Jazz, who will be joining students from Birmingham Conservatoire to perform at the Festival.

INTRODUCTION

‘Whether you’re into vocalists or pianists, jazz legends or something a bit more edgy, you’ll DOZD\V ÀQG performances to interest you.’

Following Jamie Cullum’s incredible sell-out performance in 2010 we’re thrilled to be able to welcome him back this year. As well as performing a unique one-off show of previously unheard music, he’s also bringing some of his favourite acts to Cheltenham in his role as Guest Director. Here are some of his thoughts on the line-up and details of his top picks for this year’s Festival. I first played at Cheltenham Jazz Festival in 2003, and whenever I come back I’m always struck by the sheer breadth of music on offer. Whether you’re into vocalists or pianists, jazz legends or something a bit more edgy, you’ll always find performances to interest you. Being asked to be Guest Director for the 2010 Festival was a real privilege. It was great to be able to showcase some of my favourite acts – hopefully everyone enjoyed their shows as much as I did. This year I’ve worked with the team to bring you another great mix of artists. Mercury Prize nominated Kit Downes is one of the most in demand young pianists on the jazz scene, and I’m really looking forward to seeing him, along with his sextet, at Cheltenham Town Hall on Sunday 1 May. Another act I’m really excited about is Andreya Triana. The Brighton based singer-songwriter is a genuine rising star and she’s worked with some great music producers, including one half of my next pick for the Festival - Roots Manuva & Bonobo. Their electric live shows have helped make them two of the premier artists on independent record labels Big Dada and Ninja Tune. Finally, you’ve got to book a ticket to see the fantastic Norwegian singer and songwriter Susanna. As well as writing her own original compositions, she’s also added her distinctive style to some classic songs including Love Will Tear Us Apart and Hallelujah. Check out all my picks for this year’s Festival on page 6.

PIANO

Buy tickets at cheltenhamfestivals.com

THE NEWPIANO TRADITION Jazzwise Magazine’s Mike Flynn gives us his take on the pianists who are performing at this year’s Festival. The piano’s rich jazz lineage is enjoying renewed popularity today - evident in the current wave of emerging and established piano masters all harnessing its malleable qualities to forge new sounds and styles. They’re re-energizing the swing and bebop roots of the jazz tradition while embracing classical, folk and rock influences.

Another brilliantly agile musician appearing is US star Jason Moran, a fearsomely gifted pianist who’s as steeped in the music of Thelonious Monk as he is today’s most avant garde and technically challenging classical and jazz forms. His presence in pre-eminent bassist Dave Holland’s talent heavy Overtone Quartet always brings an exciting edge to the music, while his solos build from sensitive melodic themes to free flowing sheets of sound.

These contemporary virtuosos spring from all corners of Europe and America and one of today’s most successful and sublimely melodic young players is Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen. He brings something of the folkloric Nordic tone to his work, where pristine, glacially beautiful themes mix with an unhurried style to create bewitching moods.

Revered UK pianist John Taylor brings a quieter intensity to his exquisite compositions and thoughtful improvisations, particularly in his duet with influential sax virtuoso Julian Arguelles. Combining all of these things and more is internationally acclaimed British pianist and composer Django Bates. His mastery of composition, first established in his now 30 year old group Human Chain and his contributions to seminal 1980s big band Loose Tubes, has always seen him bring irreverent energy and wit together in a whimsically diverse style. Perhaps better known for his use of electric keyboard playing, he’s once again revealed his prowess as a first rate pianist, not least with his uniquely twisted take on the music of Charlie Parker on his critically acclaimed album Belovèd Bird. Forensically dissecting Parker’s music Bates finds compositional inspiration from the alto icon’s astonishing improvisations, by slicing, re-scoring and magnifying them turning his off-the-cuff solos into sparkling written works. And in a generational nod to his collective experiences with Loose Tubes, Bates has written a specially commissioned work for a nine piece band. Featuring Kit Downes, but also including the prodigious talents of Denys Baptiste, Jay Phelps, Shabaka Hutchings and Chris Montague, Bates ensures his creative spark is renewed once more.

These highly melodic qualities are also present in British Mercury Music Prize nominated pianist Kit Downes, who expands on his romantic and classical influences to create his own richly pastoral narratives. Playing music from his new album Quiet Tiger he appears with his sextet featuring multi-reedist James Allsopp and cellist Adrien Dennefield. Downes’ award-winning mentor Tom Cawley also appears with his highly kinetic trio Curios that dazzle in different ways. They create an exciting three-way dialogue of piano, bass and drums to weave interlocking layers of groove and melody to mesmerising effect. Upping the rhythmic ante are Phronesis, the fast rising UK based trio led by Danish bass dynamo Jasper Høiby, alongside explosive Swedish drummer Anton Eger and imaginative young pianist Ivo Neame, their electrifying blend of post-rock rhythms with pulsating Mediterranean and European flourishes crackles with frenetic energy and interplay. 7

JAZZ CONNECTION

his inspired Belovèd Bird piano trio that turns both the trio format and traditional bebop sounds on their head. Trumpeter Chris Batchelor and saxophonist Steve Buckley, two more Loose Tubes alumni, appear in the highly charged five-piece Big Air, alongside influential Downtown New York drummer Jim Black, laptop artist Myra Melford, and astonishing tuba maestro Oren Marshall, to create chamber jazz with electronica-laden attitude and rock-edged abandon.

HOW THE s CHANGED EVERYTHING

Drummer Martin France has a formidable international reputation forged in part through his time in Loose Tubes, but also as a stellar Bates sideman, and he appears here with his compelling beat driven Spin Marvel project. Originally formed for a Cheltenham Festival commission the group continues to produce hypnotizing music not least here with iconic Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, sound manipulator Terje Evensen and bassist Tim Harries.

Jazzwise writer Mike Flynn explores how much the artists from the '80s have affected and LQà XHQFHG WRGD\¡V MD]] DFWV

Jazz may have transatlantic roots, yet its gravitational centre has long since dissipated to all corners of the globe, not least to our own Sceptred Isle and its rich history of great British jazz musicians. Emergent styles like bebop, modal, jazz-rock and fusion all broke like waves on our shores as each successive decade gave up its own variation on what had gone before.

It’s worth noting that today’s significant F-IRE and LOOP jazz collectives have produced the likes of rising star pianist Kit Downes and hotly tipped saxophonist Sam Crockatt, both appearing at Cheltenham this year. For them it’s Loose Tubes’ distinctly English, romantic, pastoral qualities, heard particularly in Django Bates and Julian Arguelles’ music that has deeply influenced their own stylistic development.

'This year’s festival features several former Loose Tubes members and... their musical progeny.' The Jazz Warriors were another 1980s collective that spawned a new generation of world-beating British jazz musicians – including Courtney Pine and Julian Joseph among many others – and who stamped their identity on the rich bebop tradition. Their latter day incarnation is Tomorrow’s Warriors, a dynamic pool of young talent that’s seen formidable musicians like altoist and rapper Soweto Kinch, pianist Andrew McCormack and notably tenorist Denys Baptiste.

Yet in the mid 1980s an anarchic force in UK jazz, a 21 piece big band called Loose Tubes, would emerge and have far reaching effects that are still being felt today. Breaking all the rules and like all good things, leaving before outstaying their welcome, they delivered a definitive parting 1990 appearance at Ronnie Scott’s, brilliantly captured on last year’s widely acclaimed, finally released live album, Dancing On Frith Street. This year’s Festival features several former Loose Tubes members and in turn their musical progeny who are as influenced by this seminal band as any other past jazz masters.

Baptiste led the next wave of UK post-bop stars. He has brought major works to Cheltenham Jazz Festival before, like his extraordinary Let Freedom Ring! suite, and this year it’s his imperious post Coltrane soloing skills, in a fiery quartet alongside pianist McCormack and Tomorrow’s Warriors founder and bassist Gary Crosby, that finds him in rousing form. Baptiste also joins the dots between Tomorrow’s Warriors and Loose Tubes appearing in Django Bates’ specially commissioned work for a unique nonet featuring the next generation of British jazz greats.

Keyboardist and composer Django Bates has continued his willfully divergent exploration of world, jazz and classical cross-pollination with his groups Human Chain, Delightful Precipice and his Stormchaser big band, yet he’s returned to his childhood love of Charlie Parker for 9

BUDWEISER BUDVAR

ORIGINAL

An ABV 5 craft lager brewed only at the Budweiser Budvar brewery in Southern Bohemia. Enjoys the EU PGI (protected geographical indication) giving it the same status as Champagne, Parmesan cheese or Melton Mowbray pork pies. Created in a 100 day natural brewing cycle using only the finest locally sourced ingredients These include whole Czech hops, Moravian barley malt, natural spring water from an ice age lake located 330 metres under the brewery and the same strain of yeast in use since 1895. Great to enjoy on its own and excellent with many different dishes from fish to tapas. Pours to a medium gold colour with a deep but light head formation giving a hoppy bitterness in the finish that makes this beer eminently drinkable and refreshing.
