Sponsors and supporters Welcome from EDF Energy, Associate Title Partner Welcome to Science for Schools 2014. The education programme is the heartbeat of the Science Festival, with thousands of young people discovering fascinating science from some of the World’s leading scientists. EDF Energy is delighted to be the Associate Title Partner of The Times Cheltenham Science Festival and importantly to continue to support the Science for Schools programme. We are passionate about engaging young minds with science and engineering, which is why we continue to build on our rewarding partnership with the Education Department at Cheltenham Festivals. Together we are embarking on an ambitious programme of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities that take place all year round. The aim is to engage as many children and young people as possible with STEM and the opportunities for a brilliant career in science and engineering. Our enthusiasm for inspiring people in science also extends beyond our work with Cheltenham Festivals. Over the past year we have opened seven new visitor centres and tour routes at our power stations across the UK. These are open to all and we actively encourage schools to visit and book a plant tour to see science in action – all free of charge. Our centre at Hinkley Point B in Somerset has had over 10,000 visitors in 2013 and offers visitors the opportunity to see for themselves how a nuclear reactor works and engage with our interactive exhibitions. The Times Cheltenham Science Festival is such an exciting event for us to be a part of and we hope your pupils enjoy their visit and it inspires their curiosity in science. Tell Me ALL About It The Times Cheltenham Science Festival takes place in central Cheltenham each June, mainly in Cheltenham Town Hall and Imperial Gardens. Activities are sometimes held in other nearby venues such as St Andrews’ Church and Parabola Arts Centre. The Science for Schools programme comprises four days packed full of fantastic interactive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) events and workshops. In 2013 a record 12,000 tickets were issued to KS1-3 pupils and teachers from 80 schools, and with the support of our partners and sponsors the programme is getting bigger and more exciting every year.

Both staff and pupils had a fantastic time at the Science Festival. There was plenty to see and do. Pupils were buzzing about it for days afterwards.
Discover Zone was staffed by incredibly enthusiastic and very friendly people which made it great fun. All the stands were accessible and the activities were absorbing and very memorable.
What activities are on offer? Choose from a wide range of STEM themed workshops and events to create your perfect day out. Complement your visit with a free session in the Discover Zone or GE Pavilion. If you have breaks in your itinerary, have a go at the Science Trail in Imperial Gardens. Alternatively, let us organise your day for you – book a Day Package for KS3 or a Mini Package for KS1 (see page 8).
GE Pavilion
Free - in conjunction with an event or a workshop GE invites you to get to grips with its cutting-edge technology: write your own software code and step into the world of Life Sciences with GE Healthcare before experiencing flight in a full-sized flight simulator with GE Aviation. Plus much more… 50 minute slots are available each hour from 10am-1pm, but must be booked in advance and in conjunction with an event/workshop.

Your Body: the chemical analyser Free - in conjunction with an event or a workshop Your nose and tongue are amazingly good at analysing chemicals. In an instant they can identify molecules that would require hours or days of laboratory work. Your senses and laboratory scientists can both identify the unique shapes of molecules, but your senses do it much faster! In this workshop we’ll build models of a variety of tasty chemicals (like sugar and spearmint) then investigate how changing the shape of the molecule alters the way they taste and smell. And to finish off we’ll do some molecular modelling with sweets!
Discover Zone
Free – in conjunction with an event or a workshop Explore the world of science in the Discover Zone, with interactive exhibits for all ages and enthusiastic presenters ready to answer all your questions. One-hour slots are available every day, but must be booked in advance and in conjunction with an event/workshop.
“
The outdoor quiz in the gardens was a great idea and hugely successful because pupils could access it independently and do it at their own pace.
Dr. Mark Lorch is a chemist from the University of Hull. Making science accessible and fun is a cornerstone to Mark’s work. He regularly takes part in science communication activities in the community, in schools and even shopping malls. 45 minute slots are available for KS2 & 3 on Tuesday 3rd and Thursday 5th June, but must be booked in advance and in conjunction with an event/workshop. See page 7 for times.
Science Trail
Free – take part at a time that suits your group From pesticides to chocolate, groups of molecules make up the world that surrounds us, but the individual molecules are too tiny to see with the naked eye. What do they look like? How do they differ from one another? To gain an insight into this microscopic world, we have supersized some common molecules and placed them in the gardens. Can you find them? Collect your quiz sheet from the Book Tent and follow the Trail around Imperial Gardens. Suitable for KS1-3, it’s the perfect activity to fill breaks in your itinerary. Thank you to Cheltenham Ladies’ College for designing and supporting the Trail and to The Royal Society of Chemistry for supplying the molecule models.

They say that in space no one can hear you scream. But if you remove your space helmet on Mars they would certainly hear you scream your lungs out, quite literally! The cosmos is abuzz with sounds and emissions which are brought to life when magnified through loud speakers. Let astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell transport your ears to the far corners of the universe; hear the surface of the Sun ring like a bell, listen to a shooting star’s wail and marvel at Jupiter whistling. You won’t believe your ears! What can we learn from the sounds from deep space sounds? Dr. Lewis Dartnell is a UK Space Agency research fellow based at the University of Leicester studying how we might find bacterial life on Mars. He also holds an STFC fellowship in science communication. Lewis spends a lot of his time delivering events at schools, science festivals and appearing on TV shows including CBBC, Stargazing Live and Wonders of the Universe. Hearts use pressure to pump blood around our bodies, but if the pressure gets too high it can lead to health problems. Some foods such as beetroot and lettuce contain high levels of a chemical that can lower blood pressure, but how much is needed? Be a pharmacologist for the day and use these amazing creatures to visualise the effects of this chemical. Can you find a potential new drug? The British Pharmacological Society has, at its heart, the development and promotion of pharmacology and of those who are training and working in the field. With over 3000 members from 60 countries around the world, a truly international organization supporting its members at work in academia, industry and the health service. The BPS is committed to communicating the importance of pharmacology – the effect of drugs on the body – to a wide audience through a number of outreach and public engagement activities from hands on to lecture style activities. www.bps.ac.uk

Other Opportunities KS2 Young Scientists’ Day When? Friday 6th June, 9.15am-3pm Where? Cheltenham College Preparatory School Who? Y5&6 pupils from Gloucestershire Primary Schools Cost? Thanks to the kind support of Sharon Studer and Graham Beckett we are able to offer tickets at the subsided cost of £10 per pupil This year’s Young Scientists’ Day at Cheltenham College Preparatory School has been designed to fit in with the centenary of the start of World War 1. Our Chemistry, Biology and Design Technology workshops have all been themed to bring to life some of the science and technology of the time and the advances that have been made. Activities are delivered by the Science and Design teams at Cheltenham Prep in the dedicated science labs and design rooms. “The Chemistry of Colour & Pigments” This interactive and practical session will involve the children with an investigation into colours and pigments and how they are used to colour other materials. We look in particular at the colours and pigments that are used on flags and uniforms. “Penicillin - what did this mean for the world?” Designed to help the pupils understand the vital role that penicillin plays within the world of medicine as an antibiotic treating many serious diseases. This will be an interactive session with a treasure hunt as the central activity. “Battlefield World War I” A battlefield diorama will be prepared. Pupils will then be set the challenge of making a small vehicle such as a Hill Climber that will climb even the steepest slopes and negotiate the roughest terrain created. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. We are inviting you to put forward 5 pupils (Year 5 or 6) and one teacher to take part in the Young Scientists’ Day; the day is devised with teachers in mind as well as pupils.
KS3 Girls in Science Day When? Friday 6th June, 9am-3pm Where? Cheltenham Ladies’ College Who? Y8&9 girls from Gloucestershire Secondary schools Cost? This day is free thanks to funding from L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre and support from CLC Hosted by Cheltenham Ladies’ College, the KS3 Girls in Science Day is a wonderful opportunity for Y8 and 9 girls to spend a day getting stuck into science. Activities will be led by Dave Porter from the L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre. Spectacular Colour Chemistry This new workshop will allow students to experience the world of chemistry through colour. The first half of the workshop will develop the students’ understanding of what a colour actually is, before they explore the differences and similarities between natural and synthetic dyes. The students will also carry out their own chemical synthesis of a synthetic ‘azo dye’, before applying it to fabric using a specialist technique called the ‘Ingrain Process’ which is commonly used in the commercial production of dyed fabrics. The second part of the workshop will allow the students to experience how colour is used in a cutting edge research laboratory; through use of these techniques, and the design of their own analytical experiment, students will solve a potential problem in a valuable commercial synthesis! We are inviting you to put forward 5 girls (Year 8 or 9) and one teacher to take part in the KS3 Girls in Science Day; the day is devised with teachers in mind as well as pupils. Lunch and refreshments are included.

ENGINEER CPD activity – free teacher training course When? Friday 14th March 2014, 9am-3.30pm Who? Primary School teachers
Where? All Saints’ Academy, Cheltenham Cost? Free, with funding to cover transport costs
Funded by the EU, the ENGINEER project aims to support the teaching of science and design & technology in primary schools. Teaching materials have been developed for ten practical units that link aspects of the science curriculum with relevant engineering design challenges. These highly engaging challenges include building mini-vacuum cleaners and model gliders as well as devising a way of measuring lung volume. Staff from the UK partner, Science Oxford, are able to offer a free training course to primary school teachers who would like to run ENGINEER activities in their schools. This hands-on 1-day course will enable teachers to try out some of the activities and to explore ways of using and adapting the units in their schools. Participants will get a box of equipment and a memory stick with a comprehensive teacher guide for each of the 10 design challenges, including presentation slides and pupil worksheets. The units are aimed at upper KS2 although many can be adapted for younger pupils. Science Oxford has been working with schools for over 25 years and regularly runs practical science and engineering sessions in schools as well as training sessions for teachers to help enhance their science teaching. www.scienceoxford.com Free lunch and refreshments will be provided as well as reasonable travel costs. Places are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Booking closes on Friday 28th February 2014.
Don’t miss out! Don’t forget to book your free activities! Choose from the Discover Zone, the GE Pavilion and a fantastic workshop from the University of Hull. If you’ve got breaks in your itinerary, take part in the Science Trail.
See pages 4-5 for more information.

We want to bring packed lunches with us; is there anywhere to eat them? Lots of schools spend a day at the Festival and bring lunch with them. There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves. In case of rain, we have some cover to keep you dry!
“
Is there anywhere to park? Where should our minibus/coach pull up? There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses around the Town Hall in Imperial Square, but the area will be busy, so please allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several public car parks within a few minutes’ walk of the Town Hall. www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/your-visit Coaches should arrive a minimum of 20 minutes before the start of your first activity. Coaches can pull up at the front of Cheltenham Town Hall (GL50 1QA) for disembarkation but must then move on and wait at a dedicated coach parking area until pick-up time. There is free parking for coaches at Cheltenham race course, GL50 4SH: www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/your-visit

It was really useful to be met from the coach and directed to the talk. The volunteers were extremely helpful and made everything so easy.

I haven’t been to the Science Festival before; how well organised is it? We think that it is very well organised and from their feedback, our visiting schools think so too! Festival staff will meet and greet you when you arrive at Cheltenham Town Hall, and then escort you to your first event/workshop. All the venues are easily accessible. Festival staff will help seat your group and are always available to deal with queries and give assistance. On occasion, the number of schools arriving/leaving at the same time makes it difficult for coaches to pull up for disembarkation, or to get away once full. We do our best to make this as painless as possible.
I liked the fact that you were prepared for the weather and had tents for lunch.
